- At 11:51 pm on Tuesday, 6/4/2024 the Norwich Fire Department was dispatched to 3 Watercress Avenue for a neighbor reporting a house on fire. Battalion 1 arrived at 11:55 with a well involved 2.5 story wood frame. Engine 3 arrived and positioned a 2.5” hose line between the fire building and bravo exposure.
Squad Step made the hydrant on Tyler Avenue while the two other members hand jacked 5 inch down the hill from Engine 3. Truck 1 set up for defensive operations and performed the primary search of the Bravo exposure. Engine 2 laid a supply line from a hydrant on Washington Street which fed Squad A who relay pumped to Engine 3.
The Squad crew then stretched a line to the rear while Engine 2 stretched to the delta side. Engine 31 stretched an 1.75” hose line to the front and threw a 35’ ladder to the gable window on the Charlie side. Ladder 5 assisted with water supply and then checked the Bravo exposure for extension. Truck 1 was also given water who knocked a lot of fire from the front. A second alarm was transmitted which brought in Laurel Hill Engine 62, Occum Engine 41 and Taftville Tower 25. Those crews ended up covering the city.
The Norwich Police Department, Norwich Public Utilities and American Ambulance also stood by on scene. The Mohegan Tribal Fire Department provided the FAST and the Norwich Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
Initial crews faced a large volume of fire with a poor water supply on a dead end main but crews worked hard to save the exposures from catching fire.
