I notice people left as many trees in their yards as possible back in the day. Now, people cut down just about everything to "make it easier to mow my lawn." *sigh*

its also quite a bit safer to have fewer trees in the yard, as they are often blown over during storms. branches break windows and destroy rooftops.

It could also be that they needed those trees to cool off their houses in the summer.

I sure it was a rare opportunity to have a picture of yourself or others in this time period.

Photos were relatively common. Our family has pictures dating back to the 1880s!
But home movies were another matter. The first movie cam was built in 1888, and even a decade later it was still the province of professional photographers.

At the 18.00 second mark, I did a ten pin bowling job in 1980 in Edinburgh Scotland at roseburn near murrayfield stadium.
We got £5 a night and a mince pie and chips was 26p and ten regal small cigarettes were 70p so we were well paid.

Nice set. When panning out please don't jump to the next photo so quick, let the whole photo be viewed. Thank you,

If it helps you can slow the timing by clicking on the gear icon and choosing "Playback speed".

Judging from the "leg o'mutton" sleeves on the female ice skaters, I would say the photo is more likely 1893 rather than 1913. But other than that, it was a very enjoyable collection of photos of a time gone by.

The populations had a different notion of being in public as evidenced by their attire. Nearly every person is dresses in a suit of some fashion.

I believe the skating scene was in the early 1900s. You can tell by the style of their clothes is was not 1913.

Quite a compendium. Why are all the Wilmette Illinois photos phrased as "could be?" Somehow I perceive the city street photos of the first decade of the 20th century to seem staged, as though providing an example for the subsequent residents. It's also as though they were given a handful of years in most places where there was relative prosperity, natural disasters aside, then they were treated to a brief war, an epidemic, radio waves and 'dirty' electricity. This was followed by economic prosperity, coupled with superficially enforced teetotalry, then a protracted economic collapse followed by beverage consumption repeal and a gearing up for an unprecedented war effort. Sheesh....

at 18,40 min there is a man having his hair cut and behind him we can see men with masks; this is because during 1918 there was still the spanish flu pandemic
