This was a great walking tour. I do know where Albania is. From what I recall hearing, it was Europe's poorest country, but that has changed. Cheers, Steve and Michelle!
❤️🧡💛💚💙🩵💜💖💕 Thank you darling traveling duo Steve and gorgeous Michele!! Very fascinating and wonderful tour, thank you Steve.🥰 Enjoying the series, culture and people. 🌹 Love to you both. Xoxoxo
The statue is not another one of Scanderbeg but of Sulejman Pasha Bargjini (also known in Albanian: Sylejman Pashë Mulleti, Turkish: Berkinzâde Süleyman Paşa). He was an ethnic Albanian general, nobleman and Governor of the Ottoman Empire. He was originally from Bargjin, but he settled in the village of Mullet, Albania and probably served as a Janissary, he was given the title Pasha. He had fought for the Ottomans against the Safavids in Persia. After that he built a mosque (the Sylejman Pasha Mosque), a bakery and a hammam (Islamic sauna) in so founding the settlement of Tirana, now the capital of Albania, in 1614 as an oriental-style town of those times.
Wow, such an important character, are you saying he is then the Founder of Tirana, that should be made clear on the Statue one would think.. Thanks for all the info.. 😃👌
@mendjelire8392... yes but tirana has been inhabited since ancient times long before the arrival of the romans... like all Albanian cities including those that are not within the current border of Albania
@ without a doubt! If this was 5 years ago, it would be challenging to navigate since roads were not paved well. Now since about 60-75% of the roads are paved, a car will work out perfectly. However inside of the city I don’t think a car is necessary since everything in the south is relatively walking distance. However a car will help you out a lot if you would be doing some city hopping. Greetings from Michigan!
The Et'hem Bey Mosque construction was started in 1791 or 1794 by Molla Bey and it was finished in 1819 or 1821 by his son Haxhi Ethem Bey, grand-grandson of Sulejman Pasha. At the time it was built it was part of complex buildings that compose the historical center of Tirana. In front of the mosque was the old Bazaar, in east the Sulejman Pasha Mosque, which was built in 1614 and destroyed during World War II, and in the north-west the Karapici mosque The Et'hem Bey Mosque (Albanian: Xhamia e Haxhi Et'hem Beut, Turkish: Hacı Edhem Bey Camii) is a mosque in Tirana, Albania, known for its frescoes outside and inside the portico which depict trees, waterfalls and bridges. During the totalitarianism of the Socialist People's Republic of Albania, the mosque was closed; it was declared a historical monument and underwent restorations in the late 1960s and early 1970s. On January 18, 1991, despite opposition from communist authorities, 10,000 people entered the mosque carrying flags. This was at the onset of the fall of communism in Albania. The event was a milestone in the rebirth of religious freedom in Albania The mosque reopened as a house of worship in 1991. Without permission from the authorities, 10,000 people attended and the police did not interfere. The mosque consists of an architectural complex together with the Clock Tower of Tirana. Today, tours of the mosque are given daily, though not during prayer service. Visitors must take their shoes off before entering the inner room
@@Steve-Owens the little mosque is very special compared to all the other mosques in the world as the frescoes were painted by a Venetian and they depict nature which is not allowed in Islam.
The building is not slow but it has been stopped because they have build more floors then the original plan that was submitted and they have no permeation for that. It has to go through courts now and when they lose the extra floors will most likely will be demolished and then it will be allowed to continue finishing the construction.

True, I hope to visit more. My observation is that of the capital city and the centre of that city, at the moment That's mostly what I have seen but join me on the earlier walk in the mountains.. I look forward to seeing lots more.. thank you. 🙏
The Et'hem bey Mosque always has been in that place but during communism it wasn't open for public but was kept intact as landmark because the importance it has and I think it was the only mosque left in Albania during the dictatorship of communism
Noo! Kardashians are from Armenia not from Albania. Brothers John and Jim Belushi are from Korce Albania. Mother Teresa was born in Macedonia to Albanian parents. Her mother and sisters lived in Tirana and Hoxha did not allow her to come visit her family during communism.
That's great to know. Someone said to me (here) they were from Albania, to be honest, I know the names but I know almost nothing about them..so I can put that untruth to rest.. Thanks. I'm glad to hear the brothers were from here, I think I called John James it's actually John I had a fondness for in the day, a sad loss.

If you want warmer weather. I would strongly suggest the southern coast. Vlore, Sarande, Gjirokastër, etc.

You should visit just for one day each Shkodra, Kruje and Durres, Vlora, Berat, Korca, Gjirokastra. I would recommend getting your own car If possible
That covers most of the country. I certainly hope we can do a large chunk of what you suggest. A car is certainly in the future.. thanks.
