I flew to California from Texas to see this show.I still remember siting on the lawn with some ladies from Seattle enjoying the fantastic music. Then catching a 2am flight back to Houston.Working for an airline and being a Yes fan was a good combination!

The ABW&H album and line-up are so underrated and in the context of Yes' history, next to what for me was the best Yes line-up (on Fragile & Close To The Edge) this is a very, very close contender. It is no co-incidence that "Close To The Edge" is regarded as Yes' finest musical moment and that the ABW&H album & Line-up sits very closely just behind it in terms of Invention, music composed and created with imagination and daring. ❤🏴☠
Bruford's drumming on this CD is just stupendous. He's one of a handful of drummers that correctly understood the creative potential for electric drums. His sound-patch choices were always so musically spot-on
@@ericsierra-franco7802 I understand. The early 80’s saw some great drummers using electronic kits. Both drummers were among the best ever (Bonham, Moon, Palmer, Peart, Bruford).
this era was a golden age for electronic drums between rototoms, simmon’s and electronic percussion/sequencers bruford, collins, peart, it an integral part of the rock sound at the time
An "unusually coherent lyric"! That is the funniest reflection on Jon's lyrics ever written. Of course it came from you, Bill. Love it. I was at this show only because I was a young Deadhead and it was close to GD shows at Shoreline, so I went. It introduced me to YES music and I was never the same after. While I never stopped being a Dead fan, my world got so much bigger.
Thanks for sharing, Bill! I didn't really appreciate the ABWH album when it was released. But I enjoyed this very much. Steve must have a magical guitar fairy watching over him, handing him a new guitar for each shot.
Nowadays the brains alone can cost upwards of five grand. A whole Simmons kit with the brain and pads could easily go into the five figure range in 2023.
Thanks Bill, such a great time and stellar album! Saw many of the shows on this tour, and have very fond memories. This is a story that must not be forgotten, and brings to mind two quotes. "Silly human Silly human race" - YES and "When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace. " - Jimi Hendrix 🎼🥁
Saw ABWH when they were on tour in Syracuse, and it was one of the best live shows I have ever seen. For those that didn't get to see them live on tour, I can tell you the videos of the shows do not remotely do justice to the actual atmosphere of the live performance. Incredible musicians, great music, and outstanding sound engineering. Hadn't heard this in a long time, and it brought back memories, love it.
I've always found too bad that so few recordings of ABWH live are featuring Tony Levin on bass. I mean, I love Jeff Berlin, and he's done an awesome job here - especially considering I've read somewhere that he had to jump in in a very short time without knowing any of the material. But this tune just screams for the sound of the Chapman Stick...
Gracias Bill por regalarnos esta joya de la,super banda ABWH,un verdadero dream team(95%Yes,solo falta Cris Square),con los aportes de ese gran bajista, que es Jeff Berlin, gracias por la buena musica que tocan y crearon, saludos
I only had a (brief) chance to ever play Simmons electronic drum pads similar to what Bill is playing (though when I had said opportunity, it was in the 90s). I remember being almost unable to play them properly as I was so used to accoustic drums. They were "hard" when you hit them, there wasn't the give that real (accoustic) drums have. It felt like I was hitting concrete. Maybe my memory is a bit faded now but watching Bill play the in the videos he shares here and others I've seen, regardless of the band he's in, helps me have even more respect for him. I remember reading that Neil Peart stated it was like watching the tendonitis develop while he played on them on his 80s kits.

it's really great to be able to read your takes on individual songs. I find your writing as engaging as your playing. I fully enjoyed your autobiography and these bits are like reading an ongoing addendum to that very entertaining work.
Saw the tour in August in Hartford - Tony Levin on bass - was great fun to see & hear the two KC bandmates doing all the classic YES - and the new material ..
I wonder what it must’ve been like for Wakeman, Howe & Anderson to get back will Bill after he left originally to go to the ultimate Prog dojo that is King Crimson. Talk about leveling up!
^^^This is quite possibly the *best* use of Simmons electronic drums I've ever heard anywhere! (And I've heard all Bill's work with Earthworks and King Crimson.)
Good point about the thematic kinship with Midnight Oil's music. Ya, I really love the ABWH disc. Wish they'd gone on to create more music as that band. Union was cool in the sense that it was a gathering of heroes, but I think ABWH could have continued on their own path awhile longer and generated some more compelling pieces from these guys in their prime.
I remember when this album came out. Yes with Tony Levin. Brilliant. The seasoned musicianship, and Bill bringing the solid bound he had forged with Tony over the years. 'tis a pity we got the hodpodge that was Union after this.
It was such a shame that we never got an ABWH 2 from these guys. Instead we got the Union nonsense. I recall Bill Bruford talking about how enjoyable this time was. And he thought it was a new band just beginning to find its way (the ABWH tracks on Union were very promising). But then the almighty dollar took over and we got Union.
Fabulous stuff. Have to admit to being somewhat dismissive of the AWBH stuff, but I stand corrected. An amazing band, Jon A's voice really is on great form throughout these clips.
Does anyone remember Madonna being inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame? Didn't think so, but I remember Yes being inducted, eventually. I'm not bitter, honest.
Okay, total instrument geek question: What bass is Jeff Berlin playing in this video? It's not his Peavey Palladium, that's visible on a stand behind him. Doesn't look like any of his older Fender/Quan hybrids either.

Yet nobody went to prison. My perspective is that they were clearly overrated by Yes fanboys looking to relive their youths.
