Scotty not to be a stick in the mud, that’s called a neutral safety switch for a reason, I can see doing this for yourself but if the guy you do this for sells it to anyone else, and they start the car with it in reverse and or drive and the car jumps forward or backward and kill somebody you could be in for a huge lawsuit not to mention the conscience of someone being hurt because of your actions other than that it’s a great fix
Redneck Power I never really thought Scotty was much of a Proffessional mechanic, He seems to be more of a shade tree mechanic a guy that will just make it run at the lowest cost which is not always the right thing to do, and like I said it’s fine if it’s your own vehicle and nobody else drives it, but we all know how that goes, I just want to say I like Scotty to me he’s entertaining that’s why I watch his videos and I cringe at some of the things he does
The most helpful mechanic on RUclips i have ever seen. Insightful on all mechanical issues, knowledgeable on products regarding vehicles, and you thoroughly explain what the problem is. On top of that, you legitimately have a passion for what you do. Thank you. 10/10
Ive been watching scotty and eric the car guy videos since before they went ro 1080p and they helped me get my car going about 95% of the time the other 5% some friends helped me out but i learned much more from these guys and also chris fix. Thank you so much scotty you helped me so much
often a bad battery, or a bad ignition switch. Try jump starting it to see if it's just battery. also, a bad starter can do that, hit it with a hammer and if it starts to turn, replace the starter
This video helped me get my car working again! I had hopped in my car to go to work and when I turned the key nothing happened. After watching this video I did some investigating and ended up crawling under my car to locate the starter and when I got to it there was a purple wire that had come totally loose! Tightened up the nut that held the wire in position, turned the key, and the car started up no problem. I'd never worked on a car before so was tempted to have it towed and checked out by a mechanic, but this video gave me the push I needed to attempt the troubleshooting myself so thanks Scotty!
starter bolts on the engine at the back where the engine bolts to the transmission. Follow the positive battery cable back, it ends bolted to the starter.
"All ya have to do is rewire your car; split this wire and connect it to the right place so you don't blow up in the process." "It' no big deal; anyone can do it!" lol yeah ok Scotty
Scotty Kilmer just had the neutral safety switch replaced by a transmission shop. Im having the same problem but none of my dash lights work nor any relays but have power to headlights an radio

Scotty, you the man. I know a lot of very good repair guys on you tube put you down for some of your videos but they have a ton of tools and experience and don't pay for the parts they put in. What many people need is a fix they can actually afford.
starter or the ignition key or switch assembly. try hot wiring the starter direct from the battery, if it cranks, it's the key or switch. If not, it's a bad starter
Scotty Kilmer the car is fixed!!! I accidentally put a fuse in a wrong place and that was the cause.. Ford's wanted £155.98 plus vat to just have a look at it but my aa recovery didn't charge me a penny and it's all fixed. Thanks for your help...

I had the same problem Scotty, but at the supermarket. Does not give u much room to do what you did in this video. Anyway when my mechanic showed up he touched starter selenoid two prongs with screwdriver and it cranked, second time he did it I started it with ign. keys and it started. Next day changed the starter selenoid, thinking it was the problem, but still not cranking at all. I saw shift lever not sitting directly on p so I pushed it up a little and started the truck and wallah, that was the problem. Had my mechanic tighten shift lever bolt, and changed starter for peice of mind. Thanks for the video.
This is one of our best videos yet! Very thorough! Awesome job and thanks for taking the time to do these. I (and I'm sure others) really appreciate it.
I have a 94 chevy camero v6 i bought it recently its a manual trans. I jus replaced the battery, starter, ignition coils it wont crank at all starter doesn't. Even click over ,a local electrician stop by my house said its a electrical. Issue but all the wires an fuses look good i can use your help on this one big time.i dont have money. To take it to a electrician especially. If its something. Simple, also thats cool u were able to travel n drive on the track glad you were able to have a good time ,keep up with what you do ill be following thanks Scotty!
Hey Scotty, first off, I got to thank you for helping so many people fix their cars through RUclips, it's real nice of you. I've actually used a few of your videos to fix my cars before and I don't even know much about cars. But now, I've hit my head-scratcher. I have a 1992 Honda Accord, manual transmission. The car bump starts, but doesn't key turn start. My car won't crank. I don't even think it clicks. I tested the battery, it's good. I replaced the starter myself a few days ago, so it's new. The alternator is good. I just can't figure out what it could be. I tested the master relay and it's good. The guy at the auto parts store says that leaves the clutch switch and the ignition relay. I just can't figure this one out, but I have a feeling it's a silly and easy fix...
Hi again Scotty, I have more to add! My car will start with a screw driver bridging the solenoid and hot end of the starter. I've really narrowed down the problem at this point, I think. It has to be the ignition relay, or the wiring, right? I just can't figure this out
Me, I'd just run a new wire from the battery to a remote starter switch you can buy and mount on the dash, and then back to the starter and bypass all that crap honda uses

Scotty Kilmer hey Scotty so I came to a problem on my 2000 grand Prix .. was driving it and on the same day later on wouldn't turn over no noise, nothing ... so I put a new starter in and it still doesn't make a sound ...please help
Thanks a million Scotty Sir ~ I started my 1995 Ram Truck - this in particular wasn't the problem but it led me to find the factory or dealer installed reset relay I didn't know about so - I used this video to a path to success ! Thanks again and God Bless Sir !
Scotty, you are a gentleman and a scholar. Although I don't have the solution yet, you've give me lots of stuff to try, and general concepts to pick up. Plus you seem to have mastered the perfect pacing for videos of this type. A lot of stoner-types will speak too slowly and a 2 min video turns into 12, that was not an issue here! Thanks again, and if you ever need any graphic design, web development, server admin, mobile app deployment, etc, I'm all ears, and I'm open to possibly doing pro-bono work if needed.
Hi Scotty! My 1971 Super Beetle has been sitting for over a year covered in the garage. It has a new battery, but been to busy to take to the car shows. Anywho, I used a small portable jumper cable, and finally got it started, whoo hoo! My problem is that after letting it run for about 30 minutes, I turned the key off, then tried to start it back up, and nothing! The lights came in like it was going to start, but crickets!! I am female, my husband recently passed away, and I'm trying to do everything on my own...this has me scratching my head. It's dark now, but I'm thinking maybe I can use my little portable cables to try and start it tomorrow? All the technical things you mention in this video, is really over my head! You are a car genius, and wish I could do all this on my own.

Thanks million Scottie. Your "hot wire" trick got me going - without having to push-start. If only I had tried this before removing the starter................THANKS AGAIN !!
Aloha Scotty, great video. On my car, the no crank no start is only intermittent, and I can hear the starter click. Jiggling the tilt steering column seems to fix it most of the time (but it sometimes takes many jiggles). What is the connector that is likely faulty? Difficult to diagnose, because it is not possible to recreate the problem. Starts fine 95% of the time I start the car.
So my Tahoe seems to have a good battery and a new starter I just installed. But when I turn the key over it has power for about 2 seconds then clicks and. A total power loss as I can tell what would you recommend I do ?
Good evening Scotty. I have a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan SE. Sometimes when I try to start it I just get a click. Then I will try one or two more times and it will start right up. This started about a week ago and I have experienced the "click" about 3 times so far. The battery is about 2 years old. Wiring looks ok but it's kind of hard to see on the starter. The starter is the original one. My van had 192,000 miles on it. Thanks for your help and your videos. They help a lot.
Scotty first i hope eveythings good for you. Not so much my way. Today i got off work jumped into my 1993 saturn sc2, started it up and went on my way. Stopped at my bank parked cut my car off, went in for about 15mins come out jumped in and turned the key radio turned on along with heater blower, seatbelt came back to position. Put my foot on my brake pedal and turned key to start, but nothing at all. Long story short tried jumping, then changed battery, as far as the starter haven't had any pier issues. Checked fuses under the hood, cant figure it out. Is there a relay or something? Any help would be great! Thank you
I was gonna say the samething. It was storming bad the other day and my Infiniti G35 cut off on me while I was on a back road going maybe 25. It turned off had no power whats so ever. Figured out it wasnt my battery or my alternator. But I seen this video he said the engine could be locked up or it would have to be an ignition switch. Which one? I have no idea. Im still confused as to whats really wrong with my car
Just changed my alternator, battery, and serpentine belt...my car still wont start its a 2001 Toyota Corolla. Can you give me some idea of what to do next or what's the problem? Thanks would really appreciate it.
Thanks for getting back to me. I did indeed get it started this morning by pattung the gas before starting it. Now as i drive i hear a loud noise and a dragging sound. What could that be?
My '65 mustang sometimes wont start unless you put it in neutral. Its a linkage problem. I already know the alternator works and the battery can hold a decent charge since I had a volt meter added on.
Love your work scotty thanks for all your help couldn't get my truck started tested the starter works solenoid's fine battery's fine turns out the contacts weren't good enough bad ground just cleaned those up and it starts fine now later.
Don't know if you'll see this or not. I've got a 2008 Pontiac Torrent with only 70,000 miles on it. New battery, new ignition switch and neutral safety switch as well. Turn the key & nothing happens. After sitting for days, or a couple of weeks, suddenly it will start fine and run normally. Then at some point when I get in it, it'll do nothing again when I try to start it. Don't know what the problem is. I've been told that it's possibly the BCM or ECM. Could be a wiring issue. But I don't know what to look at next. I have over 40 years of experience as a mechanic, but this one has me stumped. I guess it's a common problem with GM cars around 07-08. Have you ever encountered this problem? Do you have any experience with it? I need help! 😁
Also to check if your vehicle doesn't even attempt to crank: CPS. Crankshaft position sensor is used by some companies for engine timing purposes, so if there is no data coming from that sensor, the engine won't even try to start. Said sensor is usually mounted on the bell housing. Scotty's method of hotwiring the starter can also rule out bad solenoids.
I got kinda confused at 2:47 onward, where Scotty identifies the two wires to splice together. That was shown quickly and I couldn't see exactly how he was doing it. But I get the general idea. Right now I'm having to start my car by raising the hood and touching two spots in my fuse box with a piece of wire. It actually does start, but I don't like having to raise the hood to do this, and especially not when it's raining. So I'll have to dig deeper to see how to find the two wires that Scotty found. I bought an 11 function multimeter today at Harbor Freight, I think this is something I needed to do to find those two wires. Also I have a drawer full of AA and other small batteries that I can now test with the multimeter - and find out which are the keepers!
Thank you scotty you saved me again i was stumped then i though to check if the rev lightes were on and boom neutral saftey swich i was about to buy a whole new computer for my truck after trying everything you and a life saver thanks again for all your videos
great video man I like how you show real life situations and fixes rather than the usual monotoned "mechanics" telling you if it don't work get a new one. thanks for the help!
I have the same car. Same issue. What was the colors or locations on the wiring that you put together. I have order new wiring and switch but would be nice to start and move the junker. Thanks for your time. Your video's are very helpful.
I just this week started having starting problems with my 2003 3L V6 Ford Ranger. So far it has only happened twice. Each time it started and drove fine. But when I went to start it again it cranked just fine but wouldn’t start. After 10-20 minutes ± it starts right up and runs fine. When it isn’t starting all gauges and lights are working normal. New Battery + clamps no other problems
I have a 94 Mercury Topaz. Rusty old grocery wagon. All the sudden the key won't start it. I suspect it's the safety switch but it could be the ignition switch or whatever lol. I can start the car with a screwdriver at the solinoid. I was gonna just run a couple wire to the dash and use those to start the car rather than have to open the hood all the time. Can I just use a toggle switch from autozone and mount that on the dash? I'm not sure I can trace the wires you spliced together in the safety switch (which is where i suspect the short is). You rock and I love your videos, great job and good service to the public with your great knowledge of cars!
My car had a thin layer of white corrosion on the ground that caused total loss of power. I took both terminals off cleaned them up and used anti corrosion gel on both even though the red positive side looked ok, better off doing both while you're there. Car came right back on no problem and because I protected it never will their be a problem again with that. I strongly suggest you check that before you panic and start changing parts.
thanks man check the bat good, turn the engine good ,tested starter good. finally found the TM sensor and wigging the wire it worked could it just be a dirty connection or should i consider a bypass.

Just passive right? 😄
If you can get under it and under the hood, then yes
no because u still need the key
Cars have steering wheel locks that needs a key anyway so even if you figured out how to start it good luck steering 🤣🤣

Good mechanics r GENIUSES! That would be YOU, Scotty! 😊
I was expecting the obvious simple scenario but you tricked us with a more complex one. I like it.
Your videos are my staple to working on my car ! I really appreciate the confidence you give me to fix things myself !!!!
clicking is normally a bad starter or a power loss going to the starter, such as a weak battery or bad wiring to the starter.
1% of mechanics would do this fix. That's why Scotty's the best 😁👍🏻

turn the engine over on the front crank bolt using a socket and long cheater bar. If you can't turn it over, engine is locked up
that's an anti theft system problem if that light's a blinking. You need a mechanic with a dealer level scan tool to work on that stuff.
Scotty is just a genius. My regular mechanic would jump into a starter motor replacement.

Hey Scotty K! Love your videos! Always keeps me entertained while getting right to the point. 👌 keep up the great work!
thanks for making this video.. im tired of waiting on everybdoy to come fix my car.. ill just do it myself now

This video was before scotty blew up.
He's actually responding to comments
Thanks million Scottie. Your "hot wire" trick got me going - without having to push-start. If only I had tried this before removing the starter................THANKS AGAIN !!
I think you spit on me at the end there
lmaoooooooooooo
ikr....lol
nah, that was me. I didn't like the hat you were wearing.
Ctfuuuu
😂😂😂😂😂
Aloha Scotty, great video. On my car, the no crank no start is only intermittent, and I can hear the starter click. Jiggling the tilt steering column seems to fix it most of the time (but it sometimes takes many jiggles). What is the connector that is likely faulty?
Difficult to diagnose, because it is not possible to recreate the problem. Starts fine 95% of the time I start the car.
Jabez Meulemans
stuck start relay
my car doing same thing ,what was the problem?
Did you fix the issue?
So my Tahoe seems to have a good battery and a new starter I just installed.
But when I turn the key over it has power for about 2 seconds then clicks and. A total power loss as I can tell what would you recommend I do ?
It's the same with my car brother. I have no clue what it is.
One of the few channels I automatically push the the like button
I enjoy watching your videos you always get straight to the point, and very straightforward. I watch the videos like I'm in class taking notes 📝 😎
I'd so badly love to work with you in my spare time!!!
I think I'll just throw my whole car away.
somebody give that man an ice cold beer :-)
Good evening Scotty. I have a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan SE. Sometimes when I try to start it I just get a click. Then I will try one or two more times and it will start right up. This started about a week ago and I have experienced the "click" about 3 times so far. The battery is about 2 years old. Wiring looks ok but it's kind of hard to see on the starter. The starter is the original one. My van had 192,000 miles on it. Thanks for your help and your videos. They help a lot.
I know zero about cars, but this was both easy to understand and funny!
Anyone notices Scotty gets sweatier and sweatier every time the scene cuts to him? LOL
it's REALLY hot here in Texas
Thank you
william willard hes still sitting at that bank waitin for a reply
And remember if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy😅
Thanks a lots Scotty . I,am From 🇲🇦 Morocco & i,am learning from your videos
Pretty sure my crankshaft just split in two, but this brightened my day anyway! Thanks, Scotty!
What if you turn the key and you hear nothing at all not even the key chime
I was gonna say the samething. It was storming bad the other day and my Infiniti G35 cut off on me while I was on a back road going maybe 25. It turned off had no power whats so ever. Figured out it wasnt my battery or my alternator. But I seen this video he said the engine could be locked up or it would have to be an ignition switch. Which one? I have no idea. Im still confused as to whats really wrong with my car
Then your fucked
Thats mean the tow truck from the junk yard is close to you
LOL ahh, these videos are always entertaining. :)
scottys a sweatin;
It's hot in Texas
You are one of the most competent mechanics ever!
Dude. I just love your videos. Your sense of humor is priceless.
Just changed my alternator, battery, and serpentine belt...my car still wont start its a 2001 Toyota Corolla. Can you give me some idea of what to do next or what's the problem?
Thanks would really appreciate it.
if it doesn't crank over, replace the starter, if it does crank, do my video tests "fixing a car that cranks but doesn't start up"
Thanks for getting back to me. I did indeed get it started this morning by pattung the gas before starting it. Now as i drive i hear a loud noise and a dragging sound. What could that be?
patting
The person meant"putting".
My '65 mustang sometimes wont start unless you put it in neutral. Its a linkage problem. I already know the alternator works and the battery can hold a decent charge since I had a volt meter added on.
Try to start the car in neutral first, that happened to me it's the neutral safety switch
cd412 I’ve tried it , and it started, but I turned the car off and tried doing the same thing no start
Bro that worked
brah in a 3min video this dude helped me with my bmw!!!lmao like dead ass...#therealMVP
Im a female and I dont even know what tool to attempt to look for much less pop the hood and locate the starter on my 2009 nissan maxima
Don't let it scare you, it's right under the intake Lol
what to do if we get a locked up Engine?
in may cases, putting in a used engine is the best option, fixing modern engines is often too complex and expensive to try fixing yours
haha. this dude is hilarious
Raydell Dingle yet knows more than most
Also to check if your vehicle doesn't even attempt to crank: CPS.
Best to fix it RIGHT, though!
if the clunker junker is THAT bad, it needs to be taken OFF THE ROAD!
Stop hating
Also tried jumping it and still nothing.
This is some of the greatest things I have ever seen. You are the man. I will be taking your advice tomorrow morning.
Scotty Kilmer is such a legend
Thank u Sir, I started my car this morning because of your video
Thank you scotty you saved me again i was stumped then i though to check if the rev lightes were on and boom neutral saftey swich i was about to buy a whole new computer for my truck after trying everything you and a life saver thanks again for all your videos
I need a mechanic like this...👍💪
great video man I like how you show real life situations and fixes rather than the usual monotoned "mechanics" telling you if it don't work get a new one. thanks for the help!
Best video for all DIY people interested in fixing most cars like me.
I have the same car. Same issue. What was the colors or locations on the wiring that you put together. I have order new wiring and switch but would be nice to start and move the junker. Thanks for your time. Your video's are very helpful.
I just this week started having starting
problems with my 2003 3L V6 Ford Ranger.
So far it has only happened twice. Each
time it started and drove fine. But when I went to start it again it cranked
just fine but wouldn’t start. After 10-20 minutes ± it starts right up and runs
fine. When it isn’t starting all gauges and lights are working normal.
New Battery + clamps no other problems
Scotty you are my savior
The negative cable on solid part of the engine. Crankshaft bolt turns so engine is not locked up. Thanks for info Scotty! God bless.
Nice and to the point diagnostic for the problem! Appreciate your conciseness! Good job! Thx!
I like it when grampa explain things, so clear 😊
thanks man check the bat good, turn the engine good ,tested starter good. finally found the TM sensor and wigging the wire it worked could it just be a dirty connection or should i consider a bypass.
You're the best ever 💖💖💖
This man is a genius I swear
