  • Tachycardia is the word doctors use for fast resting heart rate. Tachycardia can be dangerous, depending on what's causing it and on how hard the heart has to work. Tachycardia occurs when your heart beats at more 100 beats per minute.
    Tachycardia can be dangerous because a fast heart rate significantly increases the risk of stroke, heart attack, and ultimately, death.
    When your heart beats too fast, it actually pumps less efficiently, reducing blood flow to the body, including the heart itself. When this happens, oxygen-starved cells in the heart can die, leading to cardiac arrest.
    Most of the time, a fast heartbeat is caused by stress and anxiety, but it can also occur when you've had too much caffeine, nicotine, or alcohol.
    Causes of a fast heartbeat include the following.
    * Heart disease which reduces blood supply to the heart itself, and damages to heart tissues and muscles
    * Reaction to certain medications
    * Consumption of cocaine and some other recreational drugs
    * Electrolyte imbalance.
    * Certain diseases, tumors, or infections.
    * Hypertension, or high blood pressure.
    * An overactive thyroid gland.
    * Congenital abnormalities of the heart.
    * Smoking and certain lung diseases.
    * Drinking an excessive amount of alcohol.
