LFG, use ash from the fireplace when you soak your hide to release the hair. The lye in the ash will release the hair in about 5 days and it will also keep the bugs out of your solution in warmer weather.
I have done that several times. The recipe i have is 2 lbs of ashes plus the water and let it sit and stir it each day. Then after a couple days you add a couple tablespoons of borax stir it up and let it sit the remainder of the time to equal 5-7 days it may take up to 10 days for a large hide. If done correctly you can easily scrape the hair off with a dull putty knife.
I used to flesh hides like that and switched to using a power washer. Knocks all of the flesh fat and meat off and even the blood. Great video! Like the process you show!
I’ve watched your videos since spring of 2017. I have to say these informative videos and watching you make bows and arrows have been some of the most satisfying.
Tom Orr from mountain men would be very proud. I now see how much effort that really takes. I learned more in this video than I did in 12 years of public school.
You always pick best tunes to go with your style videos and this one was no exception. It always enhances a video multiple times over. Simply awesome. Thanks LFG.
I'm doing a beef hide right now. If ya put a bucket of wood ash in with your water it will slip faster and easier. It creates a sort of lye solution and dosent stink. It does stain the flesh side a bit but I just wash it a few times in oxiclean. Nice job...I hope this tip makes your next one easier.
Liked it! Always like learning about how to do things that I've never done before!! Plus like seeing someone use almost every part of the animal! Next show the sinew process!
Good stuff. I have a couple of those pneumatic fleshing tools. They are really good for getting the hide super clean and thin. Makes the work a bit quicker then the draw knife.
Well done video! I really like this style, and actually prefer it at times. I did exactly what you said, sat back with cool one and enjoyed learning some good stuff. Keep it coming! 🤠
Never hunted a day in my life, but watching the primitive style techniques and processes is just captivating. It's truly amazing how we angry apes on a big wet rock figured out all these amazing tools and tricks to survive. Love learning from all your outdoor videos.
That was a good vid.. tried that with a cow hide years ago.. way bigger and mistakes were made and lost it.. good content. Enjoyed it . Keep it coming.
When you are fleshing critters try using the sharp side to start the hide and push with the dull side for most of the critter. It will save time and you won’t have to touch up ur blade as much. 😉
If you plan on doing this again in the future find a local trapper, they can teach you a lot about using and improving your fleshing knife and beam. Great job with what you had though!
I like the "grab a beverage" kinda video where your doing the work...LOL. they relax me because im on the go a lot. I hope to tag a deer here soon in West Texas, and plan to tan the hide this year (hair on). Are you seeing slow conditions and less deer overall this year? We certainly are. I only have a small spot to hunt (20 acres) but not seeing hardly any deer this year. Been 3 days since my last deer pic on camera, and ALL deer pics are showing at night.....UGGGG
I really prefer this type of craft videos using not just the meat but the hide etc, like the Native Americans used to, using everything they could off an animal
The studying I have done the Indians and pioneers boiled the skin with the deer brain to soften it / ever thought sewing the green hide to the bow? when it drys and shrinks it will be one with the bow
Hey man, I’ve never done a deer hide but do you think scalding it would have made the hair come off easier? We do it to pigs all the time. Love the content, keep it up and keep living the dream!
I just did 3 hides back to back. Would not recommend it. Big time commitment. I did 2 hide on and the back half of my buck I tried leather. I used the NuTan and it worked pretty well. Their instructions on taking hair off worked real well. Like you said the hair on the back really hung on, but for me the rest basically fell out after a few days. I love these videos. Keep ‘em coming!
Instead of trying to do the tail. Skin it off the bone, scrape off any excess meat, then stretch it and pin it to a piece of cardboard. Cover it in borax for a couple weeks and you have bucktail for tying flies and jigs
Love the educational side of it, but the voice-over sounded more scripted than your usual live monolog. I know you couldn't really talk while working in this case, but maybe try occasional updates in front of the camera while you work instead of the voice-over.
When u get a nice thick roll of flesh, take ur skinning knife and trim it off! Makes the process easier and ensures u don’t get tear through!

I was gonna say that. Good point

Hell yeah brother I love watching all the primitive crafts you do I could watch them for hours!! Definitely would love to see more!!!
Something about this fall weather and project is such a vibe

Most can't appreciate the sharpness of a good blade!!! Great video!!!
Thanks for watching feel free to reach out, i got something for you... 🔝🔝🔝

Love this. It’s all the my side of the mountain stuff I always wanted to learn
It's a simple process, but the labor and time is what defeats most people. Good things come to those who wait (and put in a little effort).

Hell yeah, the voice overlay while you work is awesome as well
Best ASMR I've ever seen!
Extremely interesting, start to finish raw hide
I can't wait till you show us the process on how to make pieces of clothing keep up the good work 👍
Thanks for watching feel free to reach out, i got something for you... 🔝🔝🔝

Thanks for watching feel free to reach out, i have something for you... 🔝🔝🔝
I had to double check to see if I was on the wrong channel, it's unusual for Justin to be so quite....lol!
Love the video just fleashed out my first deer this year well and processed the the whole deer so you've given me ideas thanks keep it up
love all your videos brother!! ... you could sit and throw rocks and just talk about random things.. and I'd still watch! Keep up the great content!

You made it look easy as you do with many things
Enjoyed the video, Indian lore is entertaining.
Thanks , I knew how to do it but have never tried.
That was a good vid.. tried that with a cow hide years ago.. way bigger and mistakes were made and lost it.. good content. Enjoyed it . Keep it coming.
Hydrated lime or wood ash would help so much with that hair removal. Soaks in a day or two and hair comes right off.
Love this kind of video!! Thanks for being old
Pretty sure you can see the cove with the leaves gone, must be awesome to just walk down to the water and start casting if you want to 🎣🦌🐗🦃🎣🙏
Love the content as always but this one was phenomenal. I love doing similar things and using every bit of the deer in some form or another
Love it, would love to see more
Thanks for watching feel free to reach out, i have something for you... 🔝🔝🔝
This is very primal liver King would be proud.
Awesome video! Will definitely be using this as a guide when I get another deer this year!
Really liked this video love learning and seeing new stuff like this

Your chickens would love the scraps
Thanks for watching feel free to reach out, i have something for you... 🔝🔝🔝
LFG. Love your videos
great real world example of what to do with a hide. Ever make lures out of the deer (tail) hair? a jig or fly?
Just an awesome video !
Amazing video!
Thanks for watching feel free to reach out, i have something for you... 🔝🔝🔝
Great video again but we miss LFD and his great knowledge.
If you plan on doing this again in the future find a local trapper, they can teach you a lot about using and improving your fleshing knife and beam. Great job with what you had though!
Good stuff! Keep up the hard work!
Loves these videos.
Use wood stove or campfire ash, and or quick lime. The lye in those things makes the hair slip much quicker 👍🏻
You could also make bucktail jigs with the fur
Thanks for watching feel free to reach out, i have something for you... 🔝🔝🔝
I wonder if the hair would be long enough to make little hair jigs? Maybe little flies for fly fishing
what a great video really enjoyed this one!
Thanks for watching feel free to reach out, i have something for you... 🔝🔝🔝
Cut the hide in a spiral, starting with the center. You’ll get more usable strips that way.
Awesome video!
Great video.
Love this stuff!
Yes more

Thanks for watching feel free to reach out, i have something for you... 🔝🔝🔝
Great job shooting the deer. LFD. Gig em
Do you give the chickens what you don't use know that they can eat a lot of stuff just wondering 🤔

I may have to do this one day just for the experience of. I have threatened to several times , but never was able to really find the time.
Thanks for watching feel free to reach out, i have something for you... 🔝🔝🔝

Have you ever tried to tan fish skin
Loved it

Yea good y
Def soak the hide in wood ash to get the hair to come off next time
As many have said ash would work good an use there brains to tan it
👍🤙
Given the deer a haircut. Lol
Thanks for watching feel free to reach out, i have something for you... 🔝🔝🔝
Need to use a wood scraper to get the remains of fat and flesh off.
when are you gonna start selling these bows? i will buy a hand built bow from you
Why not just use a pressure washer to get the flesh off?
My dad has pretty much one of every animal that he or the neighbor has trapped hanging on the wall of my parents cabin.
Thanks for watching feel free to reach out, i have something for you... 🔝🔝🔝
Wax the hair off! I use it on myself and it takes all the hair off!
Lol
Real men flesh hides with their finger nails
Love the educational side of it, but the voice-over sounded more scripted than your usual live monolog.

First
Try nair, hair remover. 😂. Joking people relax.
Shouldn't that be smoked
