Dr. Felix Wiesner presents "A Tale of Combustion, Risk, and Cheese: Fire Safety Engineering for Timber Buildings".
Fire safety engineering is an essential consideration for increasingly tall timber buildings. However, it is often reduced to acceptable solutions that are based on fire resistance. In this seminar, Dr, Wiesner will introduce fire safety engineering as a discipline, consider its relation to risk and risk perception, and ultimately highlight how it can be applied to buildings made from mass engineered timber. He will consider the concept of the fire safety strategy and how tragic fire safety failures can be traced to failures in this strategy. The fire safety issues arising from timber structures will be highlighted through recent research outcomes on cross-laminated timber fire experiments across scales.
