We've overcomplicated our lives thinking that if we lose our standard of living, especially those in the West, we will live a miserable life as if most people in western culture aren't already overly anxious, overly depressed, overly medicated via drugs, alcohol and other distractions. The longer I've lived the more I've realized a simple life that meets basic needs is the way to go so that you have free time to do what you enjoy. This ideology of the west to work constantly to reach some higher achievement and be better than everyone only leads to unhappiness in the long run. Just my two cents. Excellent video!

Well true that may be. But we are headed for some big changes ahead from the under 30s who demand respect instead of earning it. They have contempt for family, religion, work, and community. We buy a house with our work but still have to pay anual taxes for something we already bought and inclusively paid 10%of taxes for the government... Same happens with cars, motorbikes, land, etc. I cant simply by a land and stay there because I will always need money to pay taxes
Poverty is man made. Wealth is being content with who you are and happy with necessities. I would be happy with the bare minimum. Happiness is not being under the stress of being able fulfill the 30 year (slavery) contract of a mortgage, 5-8 year loan of a car, and etc. Freedom is being debt free.

We are fighting a 2nd eviction in a year by the same landlord. We have never missed paying our full rent. We had the 1st case dismissed in our favor. I was heartsick that we may be homeless. Now I try to believe that truth will prevail, that maybe things arent falling apart but falling into place and that everything will be ok. You got this. Love to all.
Jenny did you not have a specific time limited contract. Surely a landlord is entitled to regain his property once reasonable notice given. Why would you be homeless? Just rent somewhere else.
I am from Australia. I don't have lot of money or brand new things but compared to other places we have everything. I show my 13 year old son videos like this so he knows we are not poor. Lots of people here pretend to be rich because they judge each other by the things they own.

I agree completely! My husband and I feel like we are the richest people in the world, even though we are technically below the poverty line. We have six wonderful homeschooled children (plus two grown ones), we have shelter and clothing and more food than we could ever need. We have many wonderful books to read, lots of friends in our community, clean air and water, and beautiful mountains to climb. We make our own music, tend our own gardens, create beautiful things, and spend lots of time together as a family. What more could anyone want?
Building a house… building permits, inspectors, standards… and $100,000 minimum to qualify for a life-long mortgage… on a plot of land too small to grow anything.
see the opportunities you from the first world have! any simple job in the UK pays well compared to third world currencies here. you can, with the value of a car there, buy 2 or 3 hectares of land here in Brazil... or Argentina... I'm Brazilian and I know many people who went to work as an immigrant in rich countries, to save money and buy land here

Amen! The problem is governments and politicians are saying you need jobs because their real purpose is to make you stay poor. If you go to university, you forget the knowledge and the skills you really need in life. If you're dependent on money, they can then rely on your possessions by exchanging them for money, which you will then think it will be a good and fair deal.

This is what I've been telling people and they think I'm crazy. If you have a home, grow your own food and have water what do you need money for? We lack these basic skills and our minds our trapped. My grandfather was a small farmer in northern Wisconsin ( from 1920 - 1955 ) The one thing that I remember most about them is they were never in a hurry. Their lives were filled with work but it's what they wanted to do. He told my dad about money , "It comes to you, what you need, never worry ,it comes to you if you don't take too much."

That's a nice speech, I agree with it for the most part. It does however assume that you have enough space to farm and build a house on. Even in a rich nation like America, you can definitely have poverty in the inner city. As much as rooftop and urban gardens are the trend, sometimes there is simply no opportunity for that. Or rather, take a situation where people have fled their home country and now find themselves trapped in an area impossible farming conditions, lack of water, infertile land, etc. There are many situations where poverty is very difficult to overcome with just wisdom alone. I do like this video because it does point out an error of capitalism, in that many people are forced into an escapable poverty but cannot see the solution because we forgot the answer. The status quo of a 9-6 job doesn't have to be the norm and it's good to break away from that rigid line of thinking. So thank you for your wisdom :)
Basically he is saying why are you creating such cities in the first place. He is talking about 21st century poverty in many urban area across the world and not about extreme poverty cases like some part of Africa due to extreme climate. You clearly did not listen to him.
I believe there is a lot of truth to this video as somebody who has lived in both financial comfort and 'poverty' and found my personal well-being struggled in both cases, but I do think it is also worth bringing up a few other things. In the USA and many other western countries, land is mostly held by private owners or by the government - this means that to set up shelter and farm as you suggest is not nearly so simple a task without significant amounts of money. To even find where you can legally forage requires resources tied to money, and for many people also requires reliable long-distance transport (while this is better in most of Europe, the USA lacks many bus and train services and people are mostly forced to own and insure their own cars). We could also discuss the occasional need for specialized healthcare professionals which again requires money, but in any case the conclusion is clear: education must come alongside real changes to the way people and nations share property and resources with one-another, so that people have the opportunity to actually make use of the education you offer.
Absolutely agree. I live in Australia and yeah... it's mad. Kids can start out with big dreams all they want, but it always comes down to money or stupid laws. In Asia, you can start a food stand quite easily and bring joy to the community and make some cash. In Australia, you basically need a tonne of paperwork and licenses. Furthermore, you can't just setup anywhere you like. So you're pretty confined...
Definitely and this is all by design. The USA was designed with a threshold for people's opportunity for success and independent living, if you pass the threshold (likely born into more affluent family/better access to resources in that state) you have infinitely more opportunity to become educated, and learn how to live your life and be 'successful', even sustainable and wise. Could start your own homestead if you so choose. On the other hand poor areas in USA are isolated, not to mention the education system in poor areas is so much worse than upper class areas that kids end up either not caring about education at all, or realizing it's pointless/dropping out, or are taught a bunch of lies and useless information they will never need. Rather, being taught how to forage, identify wild edible plants and fungi, learning about sustainability etc should be the gold standard for basic education in this country. However the education system is confusing and pushes people to conform to a kind of slavery to capital and corporations interests. Even if you are permanently disabled, you are not allowed to save up any money for property, car, repairs, your kid's college fund, etc. or else you lose your payments. The powerful people on this planet want to keep the classes divided. Rich people and poor people are pretty much segregated with gentrification and redlining, and the rich aren't worried about poverty because they are never exposed to it outside of seeing (and then averting their eyes) homelessness in the inner city. Upper class people greatly overexaggerate the efficacy of charity, anecdotally as I was homeless as a child, charity actually does very little to keep you afloat and have basic needs met. If you are trapped in a concrete jungle, moving is NOT an option for you or your family the vast majority of the time. You are basically a prisoner to a system that purposefully keeps you down when you are poor in America. In America if you are poor, you are statistically likely to be poor for your entire life, and social, economic, and educational poverty is all you've ever known unless you manage to educate yourself effectively on the internet. Not even to mention the stereotype of poor people just being lazy leeches on society, which is always coming out a brainwashed privileged and sheltered person's mouth. "They call it the American Dream, because you have to be asleep to believe it."
Hi Jack! Yes, there are a lot of legal restrictions in the U.S. and many areas are very expensive as far as housing/purchasing land is concerned, but please don't think it's not possible for you to escape from the system here. It is actually not that hard. If you know what to look for, you can forage practically anywhere--a city park, an abandoned lot, state-owned forest land... many times neighbors will even allow you to forage in their backyards if you ask. If I see a a cluster of mushrooms growing on a neighbor's lawn that I know are edible, I just ask them if I can have them; no one has ever said no to me yet!) I have lived in six different states (and two Canadian provinces) and have never experienced a lack of foraging opportunities. Gardening/farming is also possible even if you don't own land. You can get a community garden plot, do some guerrilla gardening in an abandoned lot, or ask a friend if she'll allow you to use a corner of her property (we have a friend who has given us half an acre to use indefinitely, rent-free!). And don't forget about scavenging resources from the waste stream, which is a huge opportunity in the U.S. and Canada, where we waste at least 40% of the food that we produce. (Start by looking for the garbage bins in back of your local WalMart--believe me, you can live entirely off what you find there if you want to, and, no, it's not even slightly dirty or unsafe. It may not exactly count as self-reliance but it's a way of stepping out of the mainstream way of doing things and it will save you a whole lot of money. I can easily feed my family of eight with what is thrown out at the back of a few local stores, and it's really nice food. We are technically below the poverty line and we eat like royalty! ...Just try to be discreet so they won't tell you to stop.). As for buying land, there are many rural areas of North America where land is still very cheap. The trick is that if you want the cheap land, you have to be willing to live where the "good" jobs aren't. But that's okay. You don't need a "good" job to pay for the cheap land or the tiny house. You can work part-time in a small-town grocery store or sell used items on eBay and make enough to pay the really necessary bills. Then you'll have lots of free time to do what you really want to do with your life! If I died today, my fourteen-year-old daughter, who works part-time at McDonald's, could buy herself a little piece of land, build herself a tiny house, and live stress-free on her own. I do not worry about her at all because she is homeschooled and knows how to teach herself anything she needs to know; more importantly she hasn't learned the WRONG lessons about what she needs to live a good life. It's very true that public transportation is sadly lacking in many parts of North America outside of the big cities, but whether you NEED a car depends entirely on whether you NEED to go anywhere fast! People lived in rural areas before cars and trains and buses were invented, after all. If you don't have to get to a fancy job and your needs are few, maybe you could live in the country a few miles from a small town and bike in once a week to do your shopping/dumpster diving and get your books and Internet at the public library. I have lived car-free in the United States and we plan to go car-free again when my husband leaves his current job, even though we are going to be moving to a more rural area. Living without a car will save us about $800 a month, which will allow us to live on an even smaller income. Many things are possible if we just start to think differently and reconsider absolutely everything about what we've been taught that we need.

If I were to start a homestead along a creek in the wilderness, eventually some authority would come along and tell me that I cannot be there. One must have the money to buy the land. Modern civilization has taken us to a place where to do what you suggest is a conundrum.

Why we want to worry? Politicians and the business manis the one creating a Poor & Rich comparison. It's so true. I am brainwashed. I have been learning All the live skills, one thing is hair cut skill. I cut my husband's hair, he is happy he doesn't have to wait long time in babershop any more. We saved money too. I also grow fruit trees and gardening in front and back yard.

Great message. you said out loud what I think. People are dying because their hearts are aching and they are ignorant to who they are. Eating junk food in a panic then dying from health problems. True words! We were mislead and we were educated to fit in their system of greed, consume and control. After I've learnend how our monetary system works and that we're in a time of collapse I changend my life completly. I learn since 4 years to reach my goal to be self-sufficient. We left our homeland and we bought a rural property. We have a well and solar and we'll get - what a fortune! - a windmill from a nearby hotel, because it's not working with their system. 🙏🙏🙏 We'll starting in August to sow the land. Only 1 acre but enough for 3 people. My husband a good friend an me. We think it will be easier because we're between 50 and 60 years old. We left Babylon the great. Not much money but we feel good and are happy about of what we've achieved even when we are not rich. We lived simple to save money and it worked! It means so much to me to be free especially in this times.

Maybe that’s why my grandparents homestead became family resort or secret hiding base. When we got tried of living in the city we go to granny’s place. Since growing up in my granny’s homestead, I learned a lot. Back of their homestead are the wild woods. In old days knowing edible wild plants and foraging your own basic medicine is a common thing. From foraging to making candle shampoo soap fishing net and harpoons little weaving from the loom to make fabrics to clothing and suits and shoes. Only haven’t learn how to build houses yet. I’m also a sou chef in my family restaurant. No problem there. 😂 When our ancestors can survive the wild, why are there so many homeless suffering on the streets of the big cities nowadays. Poverty is man made. Wealth is being content with who you are and happy with necessities. I would be happy with the bare minimum. Happiness is not being under the stress of being able fulfill the 30 year (slavery) contract of a mortgage, 5-8 year loan of a car, and etc. Freedom is being debt free.
Poverty is man made because the men that make it create it so they can be rich and have power over other men. It is just another form of slavery. No matter how "wealthy" humanity becomes the rich will devise means to extract more of it so they can become richer.

We as humans should do what we are meant to do, learn by ourselves, practice, discover things by ourselves, be satisfied with minimum things, simplify life, live a minimalistic life style. Society brainwashed people, made everyone lazy, took away all the knowledge and wisdom and planted "poverty" into our minds and created unfair systems that take away everything. How come that we work so much for years and we are still poor? It took away our humanity, what does it even mean to be human anymore if we are just mindless unhappy work drones in modern society?

We are fighting a 2nd eviction in a year by the same landlord. We have never missed paying our full rent. We had the 1st case dismissed in our favor. I was heartsick that we may be homeless. Now I try to believe that truth will prevail, that maybe things arent falling apart but falling into place and that everything will be ok. You got this. Love to all.

I am from Australia. I don't have lot of money or brand new things but compared to other places we have everything. I show my 13 year old son videos like this so he knows we are not poor. Lots of people here pretend to be rich because they judge each other by the things they own.

I agree completely! My husband and I feel like we are the richest people in the world, even though we are technically below the poverty line. We have six wonderful homeschooled children (plus two grown ones), we have shelter and clothing and more food than we could ever need. We have many wonderful books to read, lots of friends in our community, clean air and water, and beautiful mountains to climb. We make our own music, tend our own gardens, create beautiful things, and spend lots of time together as a family. What more could anyone want?

see the opportunities you from the first world have! any simple job in the UK pays well compared to third world currencies here. you can, with the value of a car there, buy 2 or 3 hectares of land here in Brazil... or Argentina... I'm Brazilian and I know many people who went to work as an immigrant in rich countries, to save money and buy land here

If you go to university, you forget the knowledge and the skills you really need in life. My grandfather was a small farmer in northern Wisconsin ( from 1920 - 1955 ) The one thing that I remember most about them is they were never in a hurry. Their lives were filled with work but it's what they wanted to do. He told my dad about money , "It comes to you, what you need, never worry ,it comes to you if you don't take too much."

That's a nice speech, I agree with it for the most part. It does however assume that you have enough space to farm and build a house on. Even in a rich nation like America, you can definitely have poverty in the inner city. As much as rooftop and urban gardens are the trend, sometimes there is simply no opportunity for that. Or rather, take a situation where people have fled their home country and now find themselves trapped in an area impossible farming conditions, lack of water, infertile land, etc. There are many situations where poverty is very difficult to overcome with just wisdom alone.
I do like this video because it does point out an error of capitalism, in that many people are forced into an escapable poverty but cannot see the solution because we forgot the answer. The status quo of a 9-6 job doesn't have to be the norm and it's good to break away from that rigid line of thinking. So thank you for your wisdom :)

I believe there is a lot of truth to this video as somebody who has lived in both financial comfort and 'poverty' and found my personal well-being struggled in both cases, but I do think it is also worth bringing up a few other things. In the USA and many other western countries, land is mostly held by private owners or by the government - this means that to set up shelter and farm as you suggest is not nearly so simple a task without significant amounts of money. To even find where you can legally forage requires resources tied to money, and for many people also requires reliable long-distance transport (while this is better in most of Europe, the USA lacks many bus and train services and people are mostly forced to own and insure their own cars). We could also discuss the occasional need for specialized healthcare professionals which again requires money, but in any case the conclusion is clear: education must come alongside real changes to the way people and nations share property and resources with one-another, so that people have the opportunity to actually make use of the education you offer.
Absolutely agree. I live in Australia and yeah... it's mad. Kids can start out with big dreams all they want, but it always comes down to money or stupid laws. In Asia, you can start a food stand quite easily and bring joy to the community and make some cash. In Australia, you basically need a tonne of paperwork and licenses. Furthermore, you can't just setup anywhere you like. So you're pretty confined...
Definitely and this is all by design. The USA was designed with a threshold for people's opportunity for success and independent living, if you pass the threshold (likely born into more affluent family/better access to resources in that state) you have infinitely more opportunity to become educated, and learn how to live your life and be 'successful', even sustainable and wise. Could start your own homestead if you so choose. On the other hand poor areas in USA are isolated, not to mention the education system in poor areas is so much worse than upper class areas that kids end up either not caring about education at all, or realizing it's pointless/dropping out, or are taught a bunch of lies and useless information they will never need. Rather, being taught how to forage, identify wild edible plants and fungi, learning about sustainability etc should be the gold standard for basic education in this country. However the education system is confusing and pushes people to conform to a kind of slavery to capital and corporations interests. Even if you are permanently disabled, you are not allowed to save up any money for property, car, repairs, your kid's college fund, etc. or else you lose your payments. The powerful people on this planet want to keep the classes divided. Rich people and poor people are pretty much segregated with gentrification and redlining, and the rich aren't worried about poverty because they are never exposed to it outside of seeing (and then averting their eyes) homelessness in the inner city. Upper class people greatly overexaggerate the efficacy of charity, anecdotally as I was homeless as a child, charity actually does very little to keep you afloat and have basic needs met. If you are trapped in a concrete jungle, moving is NOT an option for you or your family the vast majority of the time. You are basically a prisoner to a system that purposefully keeps you down when you are poor in America. In America if you are poor, you are statistically likely to be poor for your entire life, and social, economic, and educational poverty is all you've ever known unless you manage to educate yourself effectively on the internet. Not even to mention the stereotype of poor people just being lazy leeches on society, which is always coming out a brainwashed privileged and sheltered person's mouth.

Hi Jack! Yes, there are a lot of legal restrictions in the U.S. and many areas are very expensive as far as housing/purchasing land is concerned, but please don't think it's not possible for you to escape from the system here. It is actually not that hard. If you know what to look for, you can forage practically anywhere--a city park, an abandoned lot, state-owned forest land... many times neighbors will even allow you to forage in their backyards if you ask. If I see a a cluster of mushrooms growing on a neighbor's lawn that I know are edible, I just ask them if I can have them; no one has ever said no to me yet!) I have lived in six different states (and two Canadian provinces) and have never experienced a lack of foraging opportunities.
Gardening/farming is also possible even if you don't own land. You can get a community garden plot, do some guerrilla gardening in an abandoned lot, or ask a friend if she'll allow you to use a corner of her property (we have a friend who has given us half an acre to use indefinitely, rent-free!).
And don't forget about scavenging resources from the waste stream, which is a huge opportunity in the U.S. and Canada, where we waste at least 40% of the food that we produce. (Start by looking for the garbage bins in back of your local WalMart--believe me, you can live entirely off what you find there if you want to, and, no, it's not even slightly dirty or unsafe. It may not exactly count as self-reliance but it's a way of stepping out of the mainstream way of doing things and it will save you a whole lot of money. I can easily feed my family of eight with what is thrown out at the back of a few local stores, and it's really nice food. We are technically below the poverty line and we eat like royalty! ...Just try to be discreet so they won't tell you to stop.).
As for buying land, there are many rural areas of North America where land is still very cheap. The trick is that if you want the cheap land, you have to be willing to live where the "good" jobs aren't. But that's okay. You don't need a "good" job to pay for the cheap land or the tiny house. You can work part-time in a small-town grocery store or sell used items on eBay and make enough to pay the really necessary bills. Then you'll have lots of free time to do what you really want to do with your life! If I died today, my fourteen-year-old daughter, who works part-time at McDonald's, could buy herself a little piece of land, build herself a tiny house, and live stress-free on her own. I do not worry about her at all because she is homeschooled and knows how to teach herself anything she needs to know; more importantly she hasn't learned the WRONG lessons about what she needs to live a good life.
It's very true that public transportation is sadly lacking in many parts of North America outside of the big cities, but whether you NEED a car depends entirely on whether you NEED to go anywhere fast! People lived in rural areas before cars and trains and buses were invented, after all. If you don't have to get to a fancy job and your needs are few, maybe you could live in the country a few miles from a small town and bike in once a week to do your shopping/dumpster diving and get your books and Internet at the public library. I have lived car-free in the United States and we plan to go car-free again when my husband leaves his current job, even though we are going to be moving to a more rural area. Living without a car will save us about $800 a month, which will allow us to live on an even smaller income. Many things are possible if we just start to think differently and reconsider absolutely everything about what we've been taught that we need.

John, This conversation warrants, deserves much attention into the many areas of life it effects. In the early days of industrialization the story of lack was a big push to create desire and motivation for industry and to change the values of people (read hands/labor) to perception of lack and need. Simple sufficiency practice together with simple wisdom and skills provides, teaches and affirms life value both internally and externally. We also learn to work together and know much more balance, health and community.... even family!

If I were to start a homestead along a creek in the wilderness, eventually some authority would come along and tell me that I cannot be there. One must have the money to buy the land. Modern civilization has taken us to a place where to do what you suggest is a conundrum.

I am really impressed your talking. You're absolutely right what you say. Most of the country have a very good agricultural system especially Asian countries. We have enough food to eat and live. Why we want to worry? Politicians and the business manis the one creating a Poor & Rich comparison. They all compare the rich country like with the luxurious building, luxurious car, luxurious house with loan.... Most of the country producing their own food. Government must opportunity to grow technology, why not government never give opportunity to grow their own food in thier land. What for buying from other countries the same product. Great message. you said out loud what I think. People are dying because their hearts are aching and they are ignorant to who they are. Eating junk food in a panic then dying from health problems. Using drugs because they want to escape. so sad. overdoses. suicide metabolic diseases. all are NOT from poverty BUT from ignorance.
Politicians need to position themselves between a person and normal life, to do this they create a consumer mindset. Adding and adding to the things we think we need in order to live, whether luxuries but also other things that we are told are the only way to run a society, by them and their very rich friends. True words! We were mislead and we were educated to fit in their system of greed, consume and control. After I've learnend how our monetary system works and that we're in a time of collapse I changend my life completly. I learn since 4 years to reach my goal to be self-sufficient. We left our homeland and we bought a rural property. We have a well and solar and we'll get - what a fortune! - a windmill from a nearby hotel, because it's not working with their system. 🙏🙏🙏 We'll starting in August to sow the land. Only 1 acre but enough for 3 people. My husband a good friend an me. We think it will be easier because we're between 50 and 60 years old. We left Babylon the great. Not much money but we feel good and are happy about of what we've achieved even when we are not rich. We lived simple to save money and it worked! It means so much to me to be free especially in this times.

Since growing up in my granny’s homestead, I learned a lot. Back of their homestead are the wild woods. In old days knowing edible wild plants and foraging your own basic medicine is a common thing. From foraging to making candle shampoo soap fishing net and harpoons little weaving from the loom to make fabrics to clothing and suits and shoes. Only haven’t learn how to build houses yet. I’m also a sou chef in my family restaurant. No problem there. 😂
