I’m a huge fan of the series and can help explain the ending of the anime. You were right that Satoshi uses Kizami’s paper instead of Yuka’s, but they didn’t need to do the ritual in the same room as Sachiko’s body. In the manga adaptation they actually do the ritual outside the school and still make it back okay. Where they went wrong was the paper. It’s never confirmed if Satoshi’s body went to Kizami’s high school or not, but a lot of fans like that interpretation instead of him being stuck and dying (thus trapping his soul) in Heavenly Host.

The anime is kind of a mess, but man that ending is great. The two girls holding Satoshi's arms, and Naomi staring into space in her bedroom, completely traumatized, is a very unsettling final image.
Corpse Party isn't really "scary" but Tortured Souls ending is pretty close.
I also think Ms. Yui was underused in general. She's cute and really sweet, and how much she loved her students was really heartwarming. In fact, there is a manga adaptation where Ms. Yui survives until the very end of the story, when she decides to give Ayumi (who loses her paper) her own paper scrap for the ritual, willingly sacrificing her life so her student can go home.

"Omorashi, sometimes abbreviated as simply omo, is a form of fetish subculture originating and predominately recognized in Japan, in which participants experience arousal from having a full bladder or wetting themselves, wearing a diaper, or from seeing someone else experiencing a full bladder or wetting themselves."
Quite disturbing that they chose to focus specifically on Yuka's full bladder for so long and having her eventually wet herself though... She's just 14 and looks/acts even younger. Definitely something the game could've gone without.

I was completely fine with most of the adaptation, but I was pretty upset that they did Yoshiki dirty, while not showing everybody else's descent. He was a vital part to the group effort, and my favorite character. The bad ending showed that everybody needed each other. Yoshiki was the lynch pin that kept Shinozaki sane. And that gave her room to be the brains for the entire group. It was largely thanks to the 2 of them that the good ending was possible. And the bad ending showed that even though Shinozaki was the brains, she needed Yoshiki. And then Yoshiki going dark showed that he needed her just as badly. Keeping her going kept him sane as well. But the anime just made it look like he was a selfish prick. And that it was all because of him that everything went bad. Which I think was a disservice to Yoshiki as a character, and to the dynamic and bond that everyone (but Shinozaki and Yoshiki especially) had formed.
Honestly, I wouldn't have minded if they just cut Yui altogether, and then give her screen time to Yoshiki and Shinozaki. That way you could give more time to do the bad end properly (showing Shinozaki, Naomi, and Yoshiki losing it) or use that screen time to try and pull off the good ending.

I definitely hold the first one up as one the scariest games of all time.

I’m glad you mentioned the darkest ending in the game (in my opinion). Things go bad SO fast the moment one of the classmates is left alone, even moreso because it’s Ayumi of all people. The one question I always have is what specifically screws over Yoshiki so hard, but it’s probably his guilt and negative thoughts towards himself becoming too much. Great video. Glad people still talk about this series.

  • @DaveReturnsagain1
    @DaveReturnsagain1 Год назад +75

It is a real challenge of only making an adapation in 4 episodes. As someone mentioned it felt like they were mostly just there to show the death's in more details. Hell even giving certain characters new deaths, like Yui, Morishige, and Yoshiaki. The issue comes from losing the subtly and the character development and growth that really cements it.
Saying this though, Tortured Souls does have a few geninue highights. One is having the game cast back to reprise their roles, this cast is absolute brilliant when they do any of these games. (Yes even the later one). They really capture the tension and fear the characters are going through perfectly, and whilst I'm in no way a "Sub Snob", I honestly don't think any English cast would feel the same.
Two I have to give the ending some credit for being an original ending, yes I would actually love it more if it had been the wrong ending mentioned in the video. Seeing as I think that is the best Wrong End in the game, but saying that I give this ending a pass for the clever build up and foreshadowing, as you see Naomi looking for a scrap of paper with another corpse earlier. To Satoshi handing Naomi his piece, to the reveal of Yuya's student ID, suddenly making you realise what happened. Then the silent reveal is done so well, this ending was used again in the live action movie, but they have a flashback with Naomi and Satoshi preparing for the festival, before cutting to Naomi saying how they made it, only for Ayumi to ask why? Then reveal Satoshi isn't there. I feel the silent reveal works better, plus I like the tie into Book of Shadows at the end too.
Three it is animated nicely, the visual are all very impressive and cetain new scenes are really well detailed.
That is all though, the pacing is still way too fast, important details are rushed over. Hell we don't even see Naomi lose her ID here, not to mention we don't know Yuka didn't have her scrap (Yes it works for the ending) but still. Also certain scenes just work better in the games, like you mentioned with the torture scene. Character's growth is non exsistent and Yui was wasted entirely here. Hell even the live action film, which granted kills her first still shows her, protecting her students.
If you want a good adapation, which is different enough from the games, but still keeps the main story and spirit alive with it. I highly recommend the manga. I got this after I feel in love with the game last year, and the manga is so damn good. The character dynamics are done so well, they do more with the relationships of the characters. Ayumi becoming more twisted with the darkening. Yui is done so much better here, and is even there until the very end. And even the reveal with Naomi and Seiko is done differently, yet so well that I may even say in places the Manga is better then the game.
Ok I will leave off with this. Tortured Souls really should have been longer, but given what we got it could have been a lot worse. I see people calling this the worst anime or adapation ever, but I disagree. It isn't perfect and I do wish it was done better, but I can still find some enjoyment in it, and I like a different take on the ending. As for the other games, I still recommend Book of Shadows, yeah it is more of a point and click visual novel style, but what it shows with saying wrong endings may even be canon, and the extra development of characters that got very little in the original game, like Morishige is worth checking out that game for these reasons.
Sweet Sachiko you have to accept it is a comedy game with horror in it, and it is full on visual novel to accept it, but it is amusing and Blood Drive, yeah it isn't good but if you want to see the conclusion of the Heavenly Host saga you have to play it.
As for DP, I don't know I refuse to play it, due to it being incomplete.

Now personally I was rather torn when I saw them kill off Yuka, it was quite sad as the feelings of sibling love she and her brother had was one of the bits of character development that we got to see in the anime. Also for the teacher, I don't know if they really could've crammed in more time for her in the anime, but at the very least I think the way she died could've been handled differently. Maybe the earthquake was starting to visibly break things down, and the teacher seeing a bit from the ceiling starting to break, decides to push her student out of the way of the falling bits of ceiling. Essentially the way she dies is mostly the same, but with that one small change you really drive home that she cares for her students and would sacrifice herself to protect them.
Now I do think if this anime was a bit longer they might have been able to get more character development in. Still I do think what we got was a very decent adaptation of the game, it could've been better, but it also could've been much worse. It really drives home some of the horrific things from the game in a different way. The scenes are downright brutal and I think they do a good job when compared to the game, which while more limited art style wise, did make good work of sound and text to convey things. Though seeing it, might be more brutal for some, or less brutal for others.

I love to get bad ends in games because more often than not it makes me feel like I’m earning the happy ending (and sometimes the bad ends have a more interesting feel to them), my best friend knew that so she pitched this game to me as “If you have characters running around checking every nook and cranny you can drive them insane, the bad ends also have their own story”, I played this on my old 2DS (played my friends 3DS and it gave me a headache so I chose the 2D one) from the eshop and I loved every second of it! Honestly, I’ve heard a lot of people say nothing but crap about the anime so I’ve never watched it but damn! That shot of Naomi and Shinozaki holding Satoshi’s arms! Bold move that works perfectly considering the medium it has, using shots to build up what’s actually happening and leaving the audience with a gut punch you’d never see coming but the shots showing it’s not going to work out.

Corpse party has an interesting story and solid characters but what gets me is the writer's/artist's barely disguised fetish throughout the series. The whole thing with Yuka finding a bathroom, her peeing herself & getting her period later on in the game is just a very strange concept considering most of her dialogue is about her going to the bathroom. Also, in a stressful environment with a lack of hydration & nutrients, menstruation is more likely to be off than on. A simple google search can show that information.
Not only that, the way the female characters die in this game is disturbing as well (ex: panty shots during death, them peeing themselves) it just comes off as fetish-y and strange considering most of the cast are children. I have this problem with Higurashi as well and why I can't finish it because of how both of these medias draw young girls, write their personalities, and how they're killed off is disgusting. You can say it's an "anime thing" but no, it's a creepy person writing for other creepy people to get off on this stuff. Corpse party has a solid story but at the end of the day, this is a huge problem that is dominant in the whole series.

Between the visuals and his commentary, I got the picture, and it haunted my nightmares for years. I still get a little tingle of fear when I rewatch it, despite being pretty desensitized to gore now that I'm an adult. I think that childhood fear adds an extra level- something psychological it might not otherwise have for me. Anyways, I really loved revisiting it again through your video.

Corpse party as a game was very nice. I remember that my first encounter with it was a gameplay by Cryotic. And it freaking entranced me. After that I read the mangas and even managed to play the game myself. I kind of wish that the anime project had been bigger. Though the original story truly did catch my attention too.

    Fantastic video!
Legit, I was so confused after watching the anime, and this cleared up every single one of my questions.
    - -
I went into this anime knowing about the game, but not having any experience with it.
As such, there were a ton of moments that left me scratching my head.
    For Example:
    - When (and how) did they get all the tongues and put the kid's spirits to rest?
    [It happened off camera... alright...]
    - How would the blogger know about needing to trick others into using the wrong ritual while she was alive (as in, before getting trapped in the ghost school) and able to actually write her blog?
[Actually... I still don't get this one. But now knowing that the black/purple smoke ghost was her, I feel every so slightly less confused.]
    - Who knocked out the teacher?
    - Who knocked out the psycho student?
    - Who knocked out the protagonist?
[The principle on all accounts... still not sure why, but at least hes consistent... At least, until he murders the blonde dude.]
    - What was the point of the teacher?
[There really wasn't one; she totally could have been cut.]
    - What happened to the psycho student's body to disappear half his skin?
[Uh... I guess the Principal did it? Maybe?
Well, at least you're also confused about it.]
    - How was the principal both stuck committing suicide AND killing people with scissors?
[These are two different principles, each linked to a different crime; father and son.]
    - How did the evil little girl (already forgot her name) able to be the 'first victim' if she was also the killer?
[Her murder turned her into an Onryo (or adjacent) that then manipulated the second Principle (the son) into kidnapping the victims for her. And then in killing them, created the pocket dimension that trapped them all.]
    - Who's diary was that, and how does it have so much info of events that no one could know about while still alive?
[It was written post-death by the mother's ghost, who is never seen or referenced...]
    - Why is protag-kun so calm after having his sister die in his arms just a few minutes prior?
[Perhaps a ton of time has passed?]
    - And just the entire post credit scene in general.
[They never brought up the 'forgetting the dead' caveat in the show.]
And I'm sure there were more, but those are just off the top of my head.
Seriously, I legit thought I had missed an episode or two; especially considering the lack of scenes involving the teacher, and the entire missing Arc of putting the spirits to rest.
All in all, it really doesn't feel like a standalone experience, requiring the watcher to first either play the game themselves (or watch someone else play it, I suppose) or watch this video.
And yes, this video did make me want to give the game a try. Though, I am a little put off by the idea of already having my game be over without actually knowing it. That seems annoying.
    - -
Would you consider a more detailed breakdown of the (first) game's story?
One that delves into the different game overs and the implications and therein?
    And what about the sequels?
At the end you suggest that they aren't worth getting into.
So... to me, it sounds like you're in a prime position to spare us a drawn out and unenjoyable playthrough.

Great work here, gonna watch more of your videos now. Love this series overall, the anime did its best with so few OVAs and is honestly one of my favorite OVA series because of it, rarely is it this coherent with so little runtime. Some changes are even for the better, and the choice to go with a mix of the good and wrong ends was really great, and sets up the sequel game as well. Probably the best choice they could've made IMO.
Honestly my biggest change I'd wish for is Ms. Yui dying in the same way, but at least pushing Shinozaki out of the way of the falling rubble instead to show her commitment to helping her students. I understand they couldn't include more of her story, but that small edit would have preserved her character and made her... well, not a basically pointless inclusion. They honestly could have cut her entirely and the only difference would be fans complaining she didn't appear.

Having been introduced to corpse party via the anime, i have to say it is an absolute shit adaptation! But i do like it for what it is, altho having finished the game 100% i changed my opinion on it 😂 I mean it's good for a movie night but that's it. When i got the game on PS4 i honestly had the time of my life playing it, shit was honestly really immersive and honestly i wish i could re experience my 1st playthrough! This was the 1st game that actually scared me, when i read that 1 victim memoir about the cannibal thingy i honestly almost threw up. Shit was so disgusting! Having 100%ted the Bloodcovered Repeated Fear in terms of all trophy's, endings and name tags, i've got to say that honestly this was worth every piece of the 20 bucks i spent on it! Had such a unique experience playing this game! Corpse Party will always have a special place in my heart as 1 of if not my favourite piece horror media! I'd say this and Higurashi no naku koro ni are the 2 pieces of anime horror that i absolutley love! Still gotta finish blooddrive on switch. Definitely refusing to play book of shadows, shit's uhm well yeah something....
But anyways! This video was great! Keep it up man!

I do want to correct you here, this is actually originally one of the bad endings you can get from failing to save Yuka. I actually got this ending on my first playthrough of the game because of a glitch where kizami went through the door and caught yuka the moment I started loading to go into the other room. And I didn't immediately load my save because I figured that was just part of a cutscene and was supposed to happen. This scene actually happens as an early indicator you recieved the bad end, since this bad end actually is pretty long. Esentially what happens is Ayumi and Yoshiki get in an arguement over returning, Yoshiki claims she only wants to go back because she loves satoshi and doesn't care about anybody else, and gets upset with Ayumi because he actually loves her and confesses it then and there. Ayumi comes back to heavenly host and starts showing signs of posession, instead of returning naomi's wallet with her charm in it, she instead steals it so that naomi is guarenteed to die, and then ends up losing her own and needing it to survive anyway. They discover Yuka died and Satoshi give's Yuka's charm to Naomi so she can survive. The ending basically ends with everybody besides ayumi dying because of ayumi's possesion and then ayumi herself dying.
(I might be wrong on some parts of the ending so feel free to correct me but this was glaring at me while I was watching this video.)
edit : I just realized you mention this bad end later on, the way you mentioned it here made it seem like you didn't know about the bad end, i'm sorry haha.

Corpse party has been my biggest special interest since 2013 when I found pewdiepie’s let’s play. Can’t believe it’s been nearly a decade and I still cant get enough of this franchise. I mean, last hanukkah I spent $300 on Japanese copies of all the spin offs and manga series I could find of it. In 2015 I found ericvanwilderman’s let’s play on it and have been rewatching it over and over since then (with some breaks in between when I find other interests). I seriously love this series with a fiery passion. I remember the day I first met my step family I was watching evw’s let’s play while being babysat by my step sister. Now here I am 6 years later, now living with my step family and my step sister going to college and I’m still rewatching it. I wholeheartedly believe if you were to cut corpse party out of my life I would not be the same person.

I didn't even know it had an anime till a few years after I saw the game, but I found it to be far too rushed and it butchers the original story. I feel like it's one of these series that just can't be adapted into other media mainly due it its lenght, story and how descriptive the writing can be, so it leaves much more to an audiences imagination which can make a scenario or death much more terrifying. This is just my opinion however, so do take this with a grain of salt.

great video, you did a good job comparing these two adaptations of the same story! however i have to disagree with you in a single case, i believe morishige's arc was portrayed in an awful way (warning this is gonna be a long comment lol)
i'm not sure if you've played book of shadows since this spin-off tackles his character and explains his complex personality, almost none of which is applied in blood covered. his death by suicide grimly fits his character, considering out of the extended main cast only him and touko end up taking their own lives. sachiko found morishige amusing, the ghosts of children and yoshikazu weren't hunting him down - so technically he could've as well returned back to the real world with the other survivors. the main curse he was plagued with was intense darkening and as we know, it twists one's character and awakens the worst, most deeply hidden parts of them (such as naomi's selfishness, ayumi's wrath and jealousy), additionally characters that are more emotional or fragile are more susceptible to the darkening. in morishige's case, it amplified his interest in grim topics such as death, shadenfreude and contempt for other people. we learn that he wasn't even searching for mayu because he thought she was incapable of surviving without him, but because he knew he wouldn't survive without her, not even willing to admit he had feelings for her. making morishige go on a rampage after finding out the truth about the splattered corpse butchers his character and makes his encounter with kizami something akin to freddy vs jason instead of two deeply messed up individuals who cope with their emotions in horrible yet very different ways.
i'm not exactly blaming the crew behind tortured souls for skipping all character development/showcase since they had mere two hours to tell the story but the liberty taken with morishige's death (and lack of tetsuya kakihara's brilliant voice acting when he started screaming, hitting his head against the wall and ultimately jumped out of the window) just really irked me

    • @lexaand
      @lexaand  2 года назад +11

I think they understand how important Repeated Fear is to the series, which is why they've decided to remaster it. Now that it's finished, I'd imagine they would continue the series again, but it's hard to say. Either the remaster was done in an attempt to bring new fans in while they continue work on new entries, or it was a cash grab, polishing up a beloved game to get what they can out of it. Time will tell, here's hoping for the best.

@@lexaand I know I am beyond late to this, as well as the video as a whole, but I'd just like to say that they most likely will end up returning to Dead Patient eventually.
They added an Extra Chapter involving Miku Shirayume to the 2021 version, and Miku's promotial bio explicitly namedrops Amare Patriarcha Crucis Hospital as well as mentioning the fact that she visits regularly due to an unspecified lung condition. They wouldn't do all that to reference Dead Patient for no actual reason, it wouldn't make any sense.
On an unrelated note: if and when they do get back to development for Dead Patient, I honestly really just want to see whether it's connected to the "Ghost Therapy - Heart Surgery Ward" found in Naho's notes. I know hospitals are a fairly standard horror setting, but it sorta just sticks out to me that one of Naho's notes on supernatural activity has a description invoking a relation to medical practices and then the game intended to mark the story after the Heavenly Host saga just happens to take place inside a hospital.
It's almost like we're moving on from Heavenly Host, something else that was documented in her notes, and pivoting to another thing she had her eye on to investigate.

11 years after the corpse party anime release and it still bogles my mind why the studio only gave them 4 episodes to adapt the entire plot. Did no one object to that when they first gave them that? Like if I were working on it, I'd suggest either making a side story with new characters or background characters from the game. You could also adapt part of the game's story and leave the rest for a second season/anime. Not adapting the ENTIRE STORY in 4 episodes and the anime really suffers for it with a break neck speed to help newcomers understand what's going on. It just makes me bitter knowing we got a product that attempts to fill two roles but fails on both. Trying to appease and fill in newcomers at ludicrous speeds and no character development whatsoever. While also trying to appease to new fans with the new scenes, animation, and the ending, but suffering from all the time needed for a plot we already know, , unneccesary panty shots that weren't in the original game, and some characters getting completely shafted in the anime.

I haven’t really played many horror games in my life, but I especially remember Dino Crisis on the PS2, it was so scary as a kid and looking back it was the atmosphere to do the job. I had a 4 MBs memory card and not knowing what “overwriting saved data” meant, I always had to restart from the same checkpoint fearing I would lose my progress when instead by overwriting I would have actually gone on. Come on, who uses that word anyway? It was a thing even in Pokemon ahah.
I don’t think I’ve seen this game ever, not even on Pewds’ channel but I would play it for sure and the anime sounds fun to watch if you don’t pay too much attention. Also I spotted Hollow Knight in the beginning of the video, I love that game, actually my first metroidvania if I spelled it correctly… and megaman, I loved that cartoon

Edit: Yoshiki's decline to go back to heavenly host is in the game too. It happens around the start of chapter 5 and if you decline you trigger a wrong end which pretty much spans for the entire length of the chapter. And Kizami does get turnt into the Anatomical model in game, it's in the normal ending when you manage to escape him and go to the science lab as ayumi and yoshiki, you'll find his name tag outside and inside the anatomical model which is kizami

I enjoy the series despite its flaws but one thing I think we can all agree on how the actual fuck did a 10 year old (ghost girl or not) cut a kids head off from the jaw up WITH NORMAL SCISSORS thats always something that hot me lol

This series always gave me such complicated feelings. I'm a big fan of the PSP remake, but everything else just feels like they're trying too hard. Idk, I genuinely just feel Corpse Party should have only had the one entry. I guess the anime works too but only if you've played the game already. Really not a fan of Blood Drive and it alongside everything else just kinda muddied the reputation of the series in my opinion. But yeah, another great video 🙏🏾

I finished the first PSP game but I failed to complete the list of students. I have one corpse missing.

I watched the anime before i knew anything about the games. Real spooky from someone who had no idea what she was walking into, and i think the condensed story of the anime was decent.
