My dad served in Vietnam, he barely talks about it. When he drinks he opens up. I remember him telling me one of his best friends, got shot in the head right next to me, that shit broke him. He said when he got back home he threw his uniform in the trash. I respect all those Vietnam war vets, fighting a stupid war for no real reason.

@@terryvThey got maimed or mutilated, lost their best friends or many acquaintances they met during time overseas, witnessed firsthand the darkest depths of humanity to return home to be scorned and shunned, spat on and called murderers. On top of that many ended up destitute and homeless. What thoughts would a 19 or 20 year old returning from the worst moments of his life think? I completely understand the rage that the country’s treatment of these men may have instilled in them upon returning. Just a total failure we never scorned our soldiers returning from conflict EVER. These young men were well past fed up I’d guess.

@@bobertkallahan4392 - You scatter so many tidbits of unsubstantiated urban legend about Vietnam veterans that I hardly know where to begin. What, exactly, would be the "darkest depths of humanity" they experienced that exceeded experiences of any other war? Who, specifically, returned home to be "scorned, shunned, spat upon, [and] called murderers"? Any evidence of same, besides tired, worn, third-hand hearsay? Are you old enough to have witnessed (or inflicted) any of these transgressions personally? If so, did you step in to do anything about it? Or do you just regurgitate them without evidence? I’d ignore this sort of drivel for the silly nonsense that it is, but these boards are populated by impressionable readers who absorb it, and pass it on, gullibly and indiscernibly. They know no better, and lack the intellectual curiosity to insist on proof.

I don't know how he'd have felt about these soldiers doing this act, but I personally believe it is well within their right to discard the signs of their own valorous conduct if those signs are not in alignment with their ideals. Most veterans who discard their medals don’t do it because they hate the country they served for, and they don’t do it out of protest either. They simply just believe that they don’t deserve the credit and that the ones who do deserve it were the ones who never made it back. They feel ashamed to be awarded while their buddies were killed and that they are the ones who end up forgotten. I met three Medal of Honor recipients who got theirs from Afghanistan and all of them never said they personally deserve the Medal. But they would say they gladly would wear it for their friends who didn’t survive. And I believe that. We made these heroes against their own will, instead, we should give the honors to those who fallen in combat, who gave it their all. You can always disagree with the war itself if you want, but don’t ever forget those men and what they did. Especially those who paid the highest price.

Over the years be rarely talked about the incident so the family have no clue of how serious it really was. It wasn't until after he passed away that I decided to track down some guys from his platoon discovered what he really did. More than one said he should have won the silver star for his actions. Hm. The psychological horrors they experienced over a war, that wasn't even any of the U.S.'s business, during the period of the "Red Scare". Was during the defunding of mental health assistance as well. Prepared tunnel systems, usage of mines, tunnel rat soldiers being drowned or gassed, bamboo chute spike pits. They deserved better. Soldier's simply doing their duty, misinformed by the administration that sent them there, and then return to suffer scrutiny after simply believing they were serving their country. Simply saying no more war is admirably naive, but as people and nations there is always going to be competition, as it is what drives people and nations forward, whether to improve life or keep ourselves secure. While cute to say no more war, it's naive to think that everyone, especially a nation that's needing more land or material or resources to fuel their people, would share the sentiment.

nice to see US soldiers that actually think and know that the cause of that war was point less.
killing thousand innocent people and those who make their nation independent and losing many of their own men not to mention the injured one's from the traps.
and all this for what? so that a different system would not spread further. and if any one say it is to defend the south Vietnam well i have to inform him of 3 things.
1:south vietnam was not meant to exist in the first place, but the US forced them to have it and make elections once that would determine who would have vietnam.
every person in the country knew it would be ho chi mihn but the president of the south changed the votes and make it look as if he won by far.
2: many people in south vietnam where very aggressive, not to mention the government. they favored the catholic minority and gave important government positions only to them while the buddhist people had to change their faith in order to get such jobs and ever forcibly even. they even where banned to fly their flag when they where to honor their prophet and thet led them to a peaceful protest and guess what. they shot 9 protest and try to blame it to the vietcong and when one of the buddhist monks burned him self (without even flinching or crying by the way) what did the wife of a politician Madame Nhu said? she found it funny called it a barbecue and said:"let them burn and we shall clap our hands." in her own words.
3:they took almost no prisoners, they killed even their own people either by accident or because they believed them to be viet cong.
not to mention how fascist like their behavior was especially towards POW's.

American ex-servicemen from the Vietnam War throwing away their service decorations, including decorations for bravery and for being wounded in action, is a pretty extreme act.
It just goes to show how alienated so many American Vietnam vets were from their government and, indeed, society and how divisive the Vietnam War was to American society--and America has never been the same since the Vietnam War. And that is tragic.
