  • In Darkness was written in May 2018 by my 6 1/2 year old son Alexander Palmer. It is a five-movement work that tells the story of a young boy (playing as a Hunter) who ventures into the wild at night, where he ultimately encounters a fearsome, mythical Wolf.

This is absolutely uncanny: probably one of the first times a father performs his son's music (who knows if J.S. Bach performed any of C.P.E. or J.C. or W.F's...). When the music started, I looked at the notes again and Alexander's birth date...thinking it might be Mr. Palmer's father...a typo...and am I hearing things or is it just an optical illusion?!
But what awes me the most are the sounds and harmonies and the preternatural grasp of the fretboard of Mr. Palmer's kid. Like the incredible cosmic harmonies of an "indigo" child: music way beyond what you'd expect from a six-year old. In fact, seemingly impossible that a small kid would be conceiving music like this.
The music is incredibly beautiful, original and contemplative! Something mystical about it...a pleasing esthetic strangeness.
And of course, what can one say of his father's performance? Like everything I've heard from this incredible world-class guitarrist, he plays deeply from the heart. This is a performance bathed in wonderful tenderness. It really moved me.
So...son and father, take a bow and let's hear a hearty round of applause from our audience 👏👏👏

Wow! That's a very special 6 year old son you have; he is already a fine composer. It's certainly not the sort of thing one would expect from the average 6 y/o. Does he play the guitar?

Boepyne he is learning to play. He wrote this music out on paper, without using the guitar.

Already a little bit like the style of Richard Rodney Bennet. Very impressive!

Wow, I can't imagine having written anything at 6, let alone something like this! Gorgeous, dark sounds. I can't wait to hear more of you and your son's work!
Can I ask what recording equipment you use?
