Lise Davidsen: Tiny Desk Concert

I knew we were in for something spectacular when the Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen came to our Tiny Desk - especially when she could be heard, loud and clear, from far down the hall, warming up in our green room. Once she got to the Desk itself, to rehearse with pianist and Metropolitan Opera assistant conductor Bryan Wagorn, the sublime amplitude of her extraordinary voice rendered the space even tinier.
Davidsen’s voice, which is incongruously gigantic and intimate, has been called “one-in-a-million.” I was completely sold on the hype after only a few seconds of singing. A couple of us reached for tissues to wipe away tears of disbelief. The voice gleams like pure polished silver, powerful enough to surge past massive orchestras and yet capable of paring down to a single silvery strand of tone, perfectly supported to reach the rafters.
It’s all the more remarkable since Davidsen was already in her 20s before she saw an opera for the first time. Her warp-speed rise has taken her from a small town in Norway, where she played handball and strummed her guitar, to starring roles at the world’s finest stages.
She begins her set with Desdemona’s quiet supplication from Verdi’s Otello. It’s a prayer for the troubles of the world today, she explains. A moody song of unrequited love by her compatriot Edvard Grieg follows. And, saving the money notes for last, Davidsen closes with a rambunctious czardas from Die Csárdásfürstin. Notice the subtlety of phrasing when she extends the word “Heimatland” beautifully in the opening verse. She caps the aria with an electrifying high C. The audience, appropriately, goes nuts.
With a little luck and scrupulous care for her voice, Davidsen, only 37, is poised for a career we will be talking about for decades to come.

I am touched by her affectionate connection to her pianist after each piece. She is quite engaged in the music and she does not forget the role of her accompanist in this beautiful set.
And vice versa Bryan is a gift to work with
We had Lise Davidsen at Lyric Opera of Chicago for Jenůfa this past season (I’m an employee). I heard her in recordings before she arrived, but I cannot stress enough that this is a voice you MUST hear live. Incredible control and nuance meets a powerhouse instrument
I heard her as Chrysothemis in Elektra at the Met, and she absolutely fills the hall seemingly effortlessly. No way to do it justice in recordings, incredible experience
"World class" is an understatement.
Such a warm, round voice for a soprano! Glad to see her on Tiny Desk Concert.
Gorgeous! I don't think I've recently (or ever) heard a soprano with such a thrilling shimmer to her voice. Thank you for bring her and her pianist to us.
She is one of the best sopranos, thank you! Amazing perfomance
I have watched this so many times. Her voice is so high in pitch but so crystal clear. I wish I had the money to go see her.
but why does she start every note without vibrato and then push it into a vibrato, making it sound like she's struggling to get the sound out? Very exhausting to listen to. Is this some new way of singing? It also kind of kills the legato. I don't know if she's trying to do portamento or something, but it would be easier to listen to if she just let the sound poor freely and consistently.
Beautiful voice, clean and vibrant. Lovely people, thank you.
The vocal power of an opera singer is incredible. wow
It’s enough to give you instant goose bumps!
Wow, her vibrato is spectacular. What a powerful voice!
Amazing…I also cried after the first selection. Lise is one of the most compelling singers from any genre I’ve heard. I would love to hear her sing Mozart’s Queen of the Night aria. And hey everybody, let’s not overlook the sensitive touch of her piano accompanist, not to mention his rousing solo on the last song.
Her voice type is not for Queen of the Night's der holle rache. That's for a coloratura soprano. It would be pretty impossible for her to sing that aria. Look for Diana Damrau, Natalie Dessay for more appropriate singers.
not her repertoire
Lise is a dramatic soprano and her voice does not suit the crazy vocal gymnastics required for a coloratura role, like the Queen of the Night. Lise can crush Wagner all day every day. She's currently in Tosca, which is an expansion of her versatility.
This was lovely to my ears
As a Norwegian I am very conscious of how my fellow countrymen speak foreign languages, and especially English. I am impressed by how she doesn't have a typical eastern-Norwegian English accent when she speaks, but she does when she is singing Italian 😀
She does not sing in Italian...it sounds like another language and it does not sound like Verdi....
New to me and I love it 😍😍😍😍😍
Brilliant - thank you!
I love her..❤
Woah, woah, WOAH! This much talent and volume might not fit into this tiny desk space! Holy cow!
Yeah opera singer training requires adapting your volume and projection to the room you're in !!! Enjoy listening ❤
I was lucky to have heard her many times in different roles and opera houses, always mesmerising. A voice that cannot be fully enjoyed on recording or via a microphone. Surely, the best dramatic soprano around.
Thank you, this feels so good inside me. My mind and hearts floats in poetry and evening laughs over tea.
dork.

@CuanDurkin I thought you would enjoy this concert. She sings a Hungarian piece as well. Maybe one day I can see you singing in a tiny desk concert (or live on stage)❤
♥♥♥♥♥
Wauw
Was that the sustain pedal creaking at the start there? (and sprinkled in through the more silent moments)
Operatic. No auto tuning
🚬😎 wow
Great voice but what you talking about Willis?
Brasil 06:09 am 😊
She looks so much like Jennifer Lawrence here 😮
КАЙФ
and frickin willow smith has 1.9 million npr views and this has 54K??? people wake up! 😀
No kidding!! She only got the concert because of her parents. She can’t sing.
Right?!
Comparing ...not even apples and oranges. You're comparing beef with house siding. Willow's music is brilliant. Lise and her collaborative pianist are phenomenal.
@@alexandrahutchison263 you have a point yes, but she is a nepo baby as well.
@@RonPike and that is very true! But I'll also make the point that (whether it's right or not) traditional classical and jazz tends to get far fewer views anyway. But we all know that the number of views does not dictate their skill, artistry, musicality, etc. So let's not compare amazing musicians to each other; rather, let's support artists (ALL artists) in the way that normal society doesn't.
Amazing that the Norwegian composer's name was misspelled.
The Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg’s name is spelled correctly.
That Was "different"?
Atrapante...
WE NEED AKON!
I'm here first

Beautiful voice, but why does she return to destroy superman? lol
mmmkay

Get a more interesting life Pavan. You deserve it as much as anyone.
This is a pretty common, average, nothing special type of soprano voice. Nothing like Sissel K., her compatriot.
lol absolutely not to this entire comment.
I don't like this-- she pushes too hard, the vibrato is too wide, there's a halo of squalliness around her voice. Which is all very exposed by this unsympathetic piano accompaniment, which gives no overtone support to the voice and leaves it unsupported, not radiant. Desdemona's prayer should be surrounded by Verdi's radiant clouds of violins. This has been scrubbed with a harsh brush. I'll look elsewhere-- with her reputation, this can't be representative.
Sorry but I hate it
Why exactly?

Classical female singing sounds unnatural and annoying to my ears
@@gloglo1213you like male classical voices better ? I don't feel that but I understand what you mean hiiiiiiigh frequences😂😂😂😂😊
Listen to Tebaldi, Nilsson, Callas, Flagstad, Pons, Farrell….. this one soprano is not representative of the whole artform of opera & classical singing. And to be fair, this format is not suited at all for this music, in a dry accoustic with a dry piano and a mic so close…
Incredible!❤
