I’ve got those covering papers and that’s what I did cause I learned from another colouring artist here on RUclips and it still ripped up the paper on the front. That paper is absolutely atrocious
Sarah, you already proved time and time again you are capable of doing great art in crap paper. From now on you are more than allowed to use good paper. I don’t think your art should deserve anything less!❤
If I'm allowed to offer a word of advice as a 'hobby artist': just copy the page with a lightbox onto sturdier paper. It would still be challenging to color it in and make it pretty, but you wouldn't have to fight so hard and spare yourself a lot of frustration. I don't think that anyone of us klicks on your videos just to see you struggle. You are an amazing artist and deserve to enjoy yourself when making art.
I always start with at least some of the skin first. Because if I mess that up, it’s easy to start over. If I’ve done the whole page and then stuff up the face (or other most important part) it’s like I wasted hours. This turned out lovely though 😊
Awesome result Sarah! It's beautiful, not disappointing at all. I tape any kind of paper down when covering with gesso or latex, most of the warping disappears when dry, you could do a test of course, and, fine grit sand paper or even one of those foam fingernail files with four different emery surfaces will give your gesso, or the slickest paper an even texture and tooth...Thank you for sharing your adventures!!👍🤟🪡🎨
I saw some other suggesting gessoing the back, and I was going to suggest that as well; but ALSO use the clear textured gesso on the front AFTER you apply the alcohol markers, but BEFORE you start with the pencils. That way you can get the blending without the bleed-through, and you get the texture for the pencils to grip onto. Just a thought.
I love your work ! Even though the paper is thin you still did a masterpiece! I also hope that you color that GIANT color page you're an amazing artist
The end result is beautiful! The fight thru the ugly stage is a real struggle sometimes and trusting in the fact it will all work out in the end. And if not you learned a valuable lesson for the next attempt.
Good job Sarah. A marathon effort, but you have done a great job in colouring it. I love you channel and Thankyou for sharing your love of colouring with us all. Sending you love from Victoria. 💖🙂🙋♀️🌹xx
I tried the transparent gesso my Game of Thrones colouring book, it really made a difference to the flimsy paper. Looking forward to your huge colouring endeavour 👍🏾
I love all the tips the viewers are leaving below. In addition to taping down edges &/or using gesso front & back, i wondered if it would work to mount the poster on cardboard using spray adhesive.
Oh Sarah, I so felt for you. Your anx while coloring this reminds me of myself when I'm learning new coloring techniques. In the end, it turned out nice, I would not have lasted that long. A good tip with the clear gesso, I have never considered using it in the way you did. Since receiving the Cube bundle, my pages, and free hands have improved in vibrancy and creativeness, thanks for such a great product!
Thank you so much for talking us through your fears, frustrations and difficulties ! It helps validate my experience and inspires me to push through! I love the result too! Sidenote: I love love LOVE your t-shirt
This still turned out so awesome! I did my first huge page with a gnome coloring book, i used watercolor pencils and taped the page down to my table. I had extra poster board that i used to flatten the middle and what warping i had, once it dried and i was done for the night. It turned out decent!
I sometimes use spray fixatives to give smooth paper texture and to sort of. Save progress. So if you find your colored pencils aren't layering anymore. Add a layer or two of spray .
I just want to say that I purchased your color catalog (1&2+companion) and the amount of work you put into this is very noticeable! Great job, great attention to details. Really well done! Worth every penny:)) I intend to use it for nail art designs and inspiration. It's perfect!
I use matte spray finish to help the paper or clear gesso on the front. You can also use yes paste to put it on something thicker. Yes paste doesn't tend to warp the paper as much. Also if you really want it nice you could ask a frame shop to dry mount it for you. Alcohol marker can also break down the gesso because it eats the medium sometimes.
Howdy and happy day and happy new year even! I finally was able to emerge from jobbing catastrophe. Lol! That paper looks horrifying and you are a brave soul for even attempting more than one medium on there. I’m glad you’ll save yourself from that again. But you do make the excruciating look amazing! Yet again you turn out a really wonderful piece. Thanks ya’ll! I hope alls well, and chipper cheerios!! :)
Love how it turned out! Is there anyway to scan the image and print it on better paper 🤔 with my printer I can do a phone scan for larger things and then print it :)
You can get different kinds of textured gesso you could you smooth gesso for your markers and then use transparent textured gesso over the top of your markers for when you’re ready to add coloured pencils and other mediums that need something to grip on.
I'd love to see if you could get a kid's free printable online and use your own paper or ask for an extra colouring sheet if you and your kids are at a restaurant. I think these could be a fun variation on your series.
You turned such a cheap piece of paper into a work of art! I know the exact kind of paper you're talking about too, feels even thinner and more fragile than regular printer paper. Just accidentally bought some 🙄If you ever want to try another one of these posters, you could try gluing it to cardstock or even some non-corrugated cardboard as a backing. It would offer the support you'd need to do thicker gesso, which would help give you that texture you're looking for. ADC did it for one of his coloring pages, and it turned out very well! Still, you definitely turned lemons into lemonade with this one, and made something beautiful out of what could have been an absolute nightmare!! Great work!!
Light box and better paper can really help. Had a Disney coloring book and traced Aladdin and Jasmine onto my mixed media paper and inked it until the outline was as bold as the book and then colored it. It came gorgeous
I have got to give credit where credit is due girl, that was an amazing comeback with the face. I feel exactly the same way you do about the Disney books, the adult books have terrible art and the children's books have terrible paper. The Kinkadebooks have beautiful art, but the paper isn't good. I mean it's better than some of the other paper out there and the art is head-and-shoulders above the other adult books, but then again I'm faced with Thomas Kinkade's paintings at every turn. Again, kudos on that face recovery. You have to tell me how you managed to scrape off the layers of pencil with other pencils. And if that's a Wildergorn poster I can't wait to see what you do with it. I have a couple of Fabiana Attanasio's posters from her fairy tale books but they have full blinds in them so I have to iron them before I start. I'm not sure what medium to go at them with because they're huge, I'm debating between markers and pencil or acrylic paint. Or maybe watercolor. Who knows
Great example of turning lemons into lemonade!! Lol Awesome artwork and can't wait to see what you have planned in the future!!! Oh and by the way Love Love Loving my Color Cubes and so very glad I made that investment!!!! Sending you and your family lots of ❤ from N.C.
Something I learned while testing a lot about Gesso and grounds is....paint it on both sides of the paper. I mean watercolour artists do that with water and stretch the paper to prevent buckling. You can do that with mediums as well and the lumps and bumps go away. Even without the stretching part.
what a big clip-hanger to the next project :) seeing your video makes me think of how painting and working with colors should be, for everybody, artists and hobbyists alike, it means - making the color sketch before, then using alcohol markers with colors pencil, combining them, using each for their advantages. your hard work really shows, only just by your very good skill of using the art materials and then to the whole painting you made. I really enjoy your videos and very glad to find your channel :)
I have this coloring book and wanted to do this same thing. I know the paper is super thin. I think pasting this onto some bristol or poster board would give it some durability. You did amazing job and i love the gesso hack. I'm definitely gonna try this. I think watercolor pencils would work as they would blend and then you can blend them out with the markers or even a colorless blender
That's one of my favorite things lately. When I get something on really bad paper, or even if I print it myself, and I want to use watercolors, because watercolor paper does not fit in my printer, I mounted on watercolor paper with spray adhesive. I stacked books on top of it overnight to let it set. Then I cover it with a coat of clear gesso, allowing it to dry in between and then again stack books on top of it to let it set so that there's no warping. Then I paint away. It's a really awesome hack. You can also take it a step further by mounting the watercolor paper onto a canvas, using the spray adhesive, and then you can use acrylics as well to make it a truly multimedia piece.
Maybe you could transfer the image to a better surface? Either digitally or with a transfer method that preserves the lines but lets the paper peel away?
I have multitude of these color pages and absolutely love them. Though I agree that the paper is super thin. The fact that you were able to do this on extremely thin paper is impressive.
Love how it turned out, you did an amazing job, Sarah.=) Thank you for all your hard work. Yup, scan your images on better paper if there is a way. We are here to see you create, not struggle. Maybe use a lightbox if there is no way of scanning it. I know it may be a bit extra, but I hope that is less frustrating anyway=)
What are pencils like to colour on wood? I have seen people transfer colouring page art to wood and paint on the wood and was curious how that would work with pencils? Maybe to fix the paper thing we need to figure out a way to transfer the image to better paper.
Have you tried it without gessoing and markers? I have the exact posters and used Arrtx and brutferner 120 square and colored all of Moana and it worked just fine, I couldn't layer a ton but I could get at least a few. Might be worth a try before you give up completely on those poster because they are really pretty
I think you can get the colored pencil mistakes off of the gessoed surface with OMS or turpentine. It'll turn into molten goo on top of a moisture proof surface so you can wipe it off with a paper towel. I think you can also get marker ink off using a bit of alcohol on a paper towel from that surface. Also, using the markers before the gesso might have been a better idea. It doesn't matter if it bleeds through. As long as you're gentle and let the paper dry now and then, it should hold up.
I used to do these in college when my normal painting or drawing homework became tedious and needed a break. I only ever used pencils though because of the paper quality.
Would using a Matt fixative have helped add tooth to the page between the markers and pencils? I have seen people use that to add more tooth to add more colour pencils on top if a picture before. Just a thought to help the pencils have something to layer on. I still think you did great considering the challenges you faced.
We love the suggestion to use a clear acrylic product to improve that poor quality paper. We don't think it necessarily has to be gesso; acrylic medium could work well without imparting so much texture. We think acrylic gloss gel medium could be used to mount the page to a stiff board or panel to minimize warping, then a light coat of medium or acrylic sizing on top should reduce absorbency. We think an added bonus to coating the page as we see in this video is that it isolated the paper, maintaining a reflective white ground that showed off the luminous color of the markers.
Solution: use Pitt Pens and layer them! Or use watercolour ground instead of gesso. Also Neocolor I are great too. But I feel you, paper can be so bad for colouring....
Tangled is one of those movies that you could watch hundreds of times. I did, 😂. And Flynn is the most handsomely designed male character in a Disney movie besides Adam from beauty and the beast animation. Great soundtrack also and I love that one of the stabbington Brothers don't talk. Enjoyed watching you colour this.
Fun fact about Flynn, when Disney was designing him they apparently interviewed a bunch of the ladies on the animation team to ask what they find attractive in a guy (in terms of physical appearance) and combined the most popular answers to create him. So it's not an accident that he's considered one of the most attractive guys in a Disney movie lol
Think I may have found a semi decent disney adult colouring book, it's called disney the fashion collection, it still has some crazy pages, but alot of the drawings look like a sketch and there is more facial detail.
Hullo Sarah, I thought this ended up quite nicely! I have tried over the years more than my share of times to rescue artwork that was made on thin flimsy substandard paper it’s just not worth it! I have used clear gesso and even watercolor ground Liz Chadderton has a great homemade recipe for watercolor ground you can look it up on her channel. It does get very expensive buying it by the small bottles from big name brand companies. I have even used Krylon workable fixative to get more layers of pencil. Please learn from this experience! Do not keep banging your head against the wall trying to save artwork on paper that is simply not savable! I know that you will have a better experience next time! Thank you for sharing all of your time spent on this huge project!!!
It is a real pain to try colouring on a page that is too thin, or has some form of wax coating on it. This has happened with a page I tried to blend and burnish colours on. No matter what you try it is never going too work as expected. @Sarah Renae Clark, this page turned out great despite the limitations that the paper was causing.
I bought this exact poster bundle for my granddaughter. I haven't given it to her yet but I also bought the Crayola Washable markers to go with it. She's only 3 so hopefully she'll just have a bit of fun and then her mom can clean up any mishaps. I have the same thoughts as you, Disney adult coloring books have terrible artwork and the kids books have terrible paper 😂
If clear gesso doesn't work. You could try to spray a workable fixativ. This works for watersoble mediums and coulered Pecils, but I haven't try it for alcohol makers. And it may not work with a waterbased fixativ. The picture looks good in the end but I didn't sure that it worst the time and frustration. I have a Thomas Kinkade Disney book. Not realy the paper quality that I like. But it isn't so big I can copy the pages on my own paper.
Why don't you gesso the back of the paper next time. Markers won't bleed through and you still have a paper base to start with.
I’ve got those covering papers and that’s what I did cause I learned from another colouring artist here on RUclips and it still ripped up the paper on the front. That paper is absolutely atrocious
Dude! That is an awesome idea I’m going to remember that one
Try photocopying onto A3 size Colouring sheets at Office works Sarah
Common trick is also to gesso both sides of paper. It reduces the buckling significantly, and once dry responds better to being reflattened.
Because the paper will pill like crazy
Sarah, you already proved time and time again you are capable of doing great art in crap paper. From now on you are more than allowed to use good paper. I don’t think your art should deserve anything less!❤

Yeah good idea photocopying with a printer could also work out too I think?
I always start with at least some of the skin first. Because if I mess that up, it’s easy to start over. If I’ve done the whole page and then stuff up the face (or other most important part) it’s like I wasted hours.
This turned out lovely though 😊
Yes, thought that myself. Totally makes sense.
I always leave the face last. It's my favourite part,
Sarah, don't doubt yourself!
Awesome result Sarah! It's beautiful, not disappointing at all. I tried the transparent gesso my Game of Thrones colouring book, it really made a difference to the flimsy paper. Looking forward to your huge colouring endeavour 👍🏾
I was gonna suggest clear gesso as well. And Sarah your art piece looks Perfect! Great Job!
Can you gesso over coloured pencils? To give another layer of texture for the next layers of pencil?
@@cindyshirreffs2099 I don't know but I have feeling it would work👍🏾
I love all the tips the viewers are leaving below. In addition to taping down edges &/or using gesso front & back, i wondered if it would work to mount the poster on cardboard using spray adhesive.
I tried that once, but the adhesive went through the paper and ruined it. Fortunately it was'nt anything special and was just testing.
I love the way this came out. You did such a great job with what you had. Be proud of this work.
Oh Sarah, I so felt for you. Your anx while coloring this reminds me of myself when I'm learning new coloring techniques. In the end, it turned out nice, I would not have lasted that long. Such rich colors, Sarah. Well done!! Disney has printable coloring pages. You could print them on any type of paper you want.
You're the first art channel I enjoy watching so much!!!
Thank you so much for talking us through your fears, frustrations and difficulties ! It helps validate my experience and inspires me to push through! I love the result too!

Sarah....perseverance, that pays off....you did it again. Amazing

Love the result 😍
Painting with foundation markers and using colored pencils adds depth and texture to the drawing 😃👍✨
She turned out lovely!! 💖 Great job winning the battle!!👏👏

i love you so much. your eyes are so sweet and it tells a lot about your soul. i love watching you even when I'm in a coloring slump
wow you did such a good job and I'm holding on tight for the next coloring poster
The end result is incredible! ❤❤
Loved your work on this, it was truly amazing...
And that massive challenge at the end of the video... omg can't wait!!

You are an amazing coloring artist 🎨 ❤ and you dit a great job with that impossible bad paper, you turned into a work of art!😉👍❤🏆
Can you test every type of Prismacolor: col-erase, watercolor, scholar... Please
I love the fact that when I goof with pencils, I can erase most of the color to lighten it up. I am so happiest that you made it through this process.
I'd love to see if you could get a kid's free printable online and use your own paper or ask for an extra colouring sheet if you and your kids are at a restaurant. I think these could be a fun variation on your series.

OMG IS THAT WILDERGORN.
I have the book. Absolutely adore it.
I have multitude of these color pages and absolutely love them. Though I agree that the paper is super thin. The fact that you were able to do this on extremely thin paper is impressive.
Awesome job. I was surprised that you didn’t reprint on a different paper because you usually do. But you overcame the hardships and it looked amazing
Your next project!?!? 😳 Hope the paper is of better quality. I know you're going to do a fantastic job. Thank you for your videos. Love them! 🤩
Love how it turned out, you did an amazing job, Sarah.=) Thank you for all your hard work.

You did a beautiful job with this picture :D
Have you tried it without gessoing and markers? Might be worth a try before you give up completely on those poster because they are really pretty
Amazing artwork!
this is rly satisfying to watch
I think you can get the colored pencil mistakes off of the gessoed surface with OMS or turpentine. It'll turn into molten goo on top of a moisture proof surface so you can wipe it off with a paper towel. I think you can also get marker ink off using a bit of alcohol on a paper towel from that surface. Also, using the markers before the gesso might have been a better idea. It doesn't matter if it bleeds through. As long as you're gentle and let the paper dry now and then, it should hold up.

I haven't watched your video in a while, it's nice to see another video
Well done! I'm intrigued by that giant poster you teased =)
Why not transfer the image to a better paper? I found myself transferring coloring book pictures to better paper even just for my kids at times.
Hello Sarah 👋👋 thanks so much for sharing 😍🙏 it is so helpfull ❤️ look beautiful 🤗
You are definitely not a quitter I personally would've given up the second I tried
Fabulous, I’m not a marker person so I really think it’s great.
I can not wait to see how you go with that huge colour in poster! It looks so fricken awesome! Where do I get one?
Just discovered your channel and I think you deserve so much more follovers!
Oh thank you!
Solution: use Pitt Pens and layer them! Or use watercolour ground instead of gesso. Also Neocolor I are great too. But I feel you, paper can be so bad for colouring....
Have you done a video about what paper is good for alcohol markers and paint markers
Would you consider tracing one of those pages into poster board?
Loved it!🤗💗💗
I'm not sure if this is possible. But maybe you could try scanning to picture and then printing it on better paper next time. If that helps?
Workable Matt spray fixative is my tool to add tooth back to my surface.
Try the French Disney color by number books. They are double sided but the artwork is great and the paper is thick and decent.
Tangled is one of those movies that you could watch hundreds of times. I did, 😂. And Flynn is the most handsomely designed male character in a Disney movie besides Adam from beauty and the beast animation.

@@break_the_galaxy well it worked . They should do that everytime.
I have that Gesso. I use it to use watercolor in coloring books. I was affraid copic wouldn't dry on it. I guess it does. Nice!
Yay love Disney 💕
I always color the back of the paper with white acrylic color. It stabilizes the paper.
Masterpiece!!!
Thank you for saying that about the adult Disney coloring books. They are full of patterns and mandalas. I want scenes and portraits.
I wish you made a video scanning and reprinting on better paper one of these pages and then coloring
What about putting the Gesso on the back? I do that on art paper I’m using markers on and still want to use the actual paper texture.
you can use gesso in the back so marker wont bleed through
Think I may have found a semi decent disney adult colouring book, it's called disney the fashion collection, it still has some crazy pages, but alot of the drawings look like a sketch and there is more facial detail.

Do not keep banging your head against the wall trying to save artwork on paper that is simply not savable! I know that you will have a better experience next time! Thank you for sharing all of your time spent on this huge project!!!
You should try this again with watercolor ground. I think it might help more than the gesso did.
Yepppp better paper….! Love it all.
Im going to guess the fun challenge is going to take more then 7 hours but wow 😳 that is amazing what you did with less then printer paper quality
Can you erase the pencil and then put down more color to fix it?
I bought this exact poster bundle for my granddaughter. I haven't given it to her yet but I also bought the Crayola Washable markers to go with it. She's only 3 so hopefully she'll just have a bit of fun and then her mom can clean up any mishaps. I have the same thoughts as you, Disney adult coloring books have terrible artwork and the kids books have terrible paper 😂
“She’s been in quarantine her whole life but she’s still a princess” 😁
If clear gesso doesn't work. You could try to spray a workable fixativ. This works for watersoble mediums and coulered Pecils, but I haven't try it for alcohol makers. And it may not work with a waterbased fixativ. The picture looks good in the end but I didn't sure that it worst the time and frustration. I have a Thomas Kinkade Disney book. Not realy the paper quality that I like. But it isn't so big I can copy the pages on my own paper.
