How an OTTOMAN Sultan Helped Ireland During the Great FAMINE - KJ Vids

  • The Great Famine in the mid-19th century was one of the most devastating events in Irish history.
Between 1845 and 1852, potato blight hit the island’s potato crop. The potato was a staple item of food in Ireland. A lack of good harvesting led to mass starvation, disease, and the deaths of nearly a million people.
One of the unexpected sources of aid in this crisis was the Ottoman Caliphate. Sultan Abdul Majeed I the First, went out of his way to try to help so he could ease the suffering of the Irish people.
Sultan Abdul Majeed was only 23 years old in 1847 when he personally offered £10,000 in aid to Ireland, but he had already ruled the Caliphate for nearly ten years.
In that time, he earned the admiration of many of his own subjects and others around the world. But this time he would have to scale back his generosity.
British diplomats advised him that it would be offensive for anyone to offer more than Queen Victoria, who had only donated £2,000.
It was suggested that he should donate half of that amount, so he gave £1,000.
The Sultan’s donation was appreciated by the public in Britain and Ireland as well. One English religious journal published an article titled “A Benevolent Sultan” in which the author wrote,
“For the first time a Mohammedan sovereign, representing multitudinous Islamic populations, manifests spontaneously a warm sympathy with a Christian nation. May such sympathies, in all the genial charities of a common humanity, be cultivated and henceforth ever be maintained between the followers of the crescent and the cross!”
The press also blamed the British diplomats in Constantinople for rejecting the initial donation of £10,000 just to avoid embarrassing Queen Victoria.
Meanwhile, Sultan Abdul Majeed had found other ways to help.
Today, the port town of Drogheda in Ireland includes a crescent and a star, both of which are symbols of Islam, in its coat of arms.
Local tradition in the town has it that these symbols were adopted after the Ottoman Empire secretly sent five ships loaded with food to the town in May 1847.
The reason for the secrecy is that the British administration had allegedly tried to block the ships from entering Drogheda’s harbor.
Evidence that story these claims include newspaper articles from the period and a letter from Irish notables explicitly thanking the sultan for his help.
The nationalist Irish Freeman’s Journal celebrated these efforts.
“The conduct of Abdul Majeed on the occasion referred to,” the author wrote, “was that of a good, humane, and generous man. A believer in Mohammedanism, he acted in the true spirit of a follower of Christ, and set an example which many professing Christians would do well to imitate.”
Though Abdul Majeed probably hadn’t expected any kind of returns on his aid to the Irish, some of them rallied to his side in 1854, just two years after the famine ended.
Britain had become involved in the Crimean War to defend Ottoman territory against an expanding Russian Empire.
In addition to Irish nurses and engineers (and some of the first war journalists in history), about 30,000 Irish soldiers served in the war.
Despite the suffering that they and their families had endured during the Great Famine, they were noticed to be serving enthusiastically in defense of the territory of the sultan who had helped them in their time of need.

Cool video, rose tinted nonsense but cool nonetheless. Can you do a video on the *Sack of Baltimore* next? It was one of the many raids on Ireland by the Ottomans that emptied entire villages of people who were brought into the Caliphate as work or sex slaves.
Perhaps the Ottomans sent money to Ireland to make up for the endless slaves they took over the centuries?

When the Swedish king escaped with is small sized army to ottomans Russia demanded hi to be turned to them. Ottomans denied. Russians launched an attack and Ottomans actually crushed them. Peter the Great could have been captured but janissaries were like spoiled rich kids during those times and they didn't want to pursue. So ottomans and Russians made a deal. Swedish king and his small army will return to home safely. But this king wanted more (Gustav V if I remember correctly) he wanted to gather with ottomans and attack russia. Ottomans denied and Gustav refused to return to Sweden he tried to pursue them more and note this Gustav V was actually an ambitious and capable king) with this Russia got pissed and attacked and Ottomans got defeated this time. So ottomans promised Russia to not ally with Sweden and Gustav was to forced to return home.

Turkiye also helped my country, Indonesia, during the war against the colonialists, but I forget in which era, during the Japanese or Dutch's.
And Türkiye has also helped South Korea from Japanese oppression. One story was filmed, entitled 'Alya, daughter of war.'
A beautiful story, about a Turkish soldier who adopted a Korean little girl during the war. It was difficult for him to take care and protect her, but still did it well, even though had to risk his own life. What a hero.
Today I just found out that these generous and kind people have also helped Ireland. And in history it was said that the ship took long days to arrive, but infact they were still willing to help. They didn't think about their difficulties in sailing the ship, they were more worried about the dying people, who even dont have any blood relation at all, and lived far away. Humanity is their basic language.
And they also never intend to get anything in return, since the people they helped, at those time were all in a weak and fragile conditions. It was truly a sincere favor. Much respect to Turkiye ❤

Goethe was a Muslim at heart. He wrote about himself, "the poet does not deny that he is a Muslim". He used to read from the Quran at the palace of the Duke and before he died, he was writing in the air with his finger, according to those who were there, 'possibly his middle initial 'W'; but the letter looks like 'Allah' in Arabic.

Bernard, my Irish roots go back 200 years meaning that's when my mom and dad's people came over On my mom's side it's Danny Donovan from County Cork.
on my dad's side it's Charlie Breslin from Fanad in Northern Ireland. I have many nuns in my family and my great-aunt was Mother Superior of The Sisters of Mercy in New Hampshire.
Both my dad and my uncle Paul were in the Seminary at st. Joe's in New York for a few years but they both quit, got married and raised families
Moreover, Islam goes way back in Ireland to the wandering brothers who carried nothing but their book preaching real Christianity (Islam)until monasticism was established and all religious were corraled by the Dominicans.
I was taught by the St Joseph nuns in the Boston suburban area since the age of 3, and attended Boston College for master studies where my dad was a trustee.

The Drogheda town crest of the star and crescent, predates the Irish famine by more than 600 years. It comes from when Drogheda got its town charter from king John of England. King John’s brother, Richard the lionhearted, brought the crest back from the crusades. Portsmouth in England, which also got its town charter from King John, has the exact same crest.

We will also help the Greeks, Assyrians and Armenians. They lived side-by-side with us for centuries. Ottoman empire was like US empire of today. They had a very good life. Then they revolted and World wars happened. It's all history now. Today many Assyrians from Syria fled to Turkey after the civil war. Many Greeks are working in Turkey after the financial crisis. Armenians also come to Turkey a lot, but since the government of Armenia occupies Azeribaijan's territory, there is a dispute now. But it's temporary.

      @@melisademir9137 That’s not a valid point I think.
Ottoman empire was the caliphate of Islam, based on Islamic law. That was the Muslim land governed by the laws given in Quran. And sadly what happened happened and Ottoman collapsed in 1916 or something and that was the start to the break in the chain of a Muslim land existence, the timephrame we live in and Turkey is now Turkey.

This Sultan Majeed worked hard to keep his empire togheter from the growing nationalism and imperalistic neighbours but he kind of failed at that. He enacted many huge reforms. He protected Hungarian and polish refugees from Austria and Russia and he also decriminalised homosexuality in 1858. You should look him up, he his very interesting. He unfortunately died young at a age of 39.
