    Good Video.
    I am surprised by anyone watching these videos that has not watched the Anvil Gun smithing videos on restoration and conservation. I had never heard of the boiling process for converting rust prior to watching Mark’s videos. I have had several materials engineering classes but at no point was this process discussed. In fact I sent links to the videos to several other engineers that I know that are interested in restoring old machinery and have an interest in firearms. One of those friend has a degree in Materials Engineering and had never heard of the process.
    Knowledge is power. Keep spreading the knowledge!

    This video has made my day for 2 reasons: #1. I worked in the Conservation Dept. of The National Museum of the American Indian, CRC, Smithsonian on their Indian owned guns to get them ready for an Exhibit on opening day. This has brought back wonderful memories. #2. I own a reproduction of a French IX Cavalry Carbine, Made in India, and exported to North America.
    It does not have a factory scoop carved out of the left side of the buttstock, so it is impossible to line up the front sight and aim for any accuracy. At my age, I would be afraid to cut a scoop out of the stock that would look factory done, so I will just keep it in my collection as it is. Thank you for this very informative video. NMAI, CRC, Smithsonian, 2000-2004.

    "an IX" means the 9th year of the French revolutionary calendar and it corresponds to the year which, according to this calendar, started on September 23,1800 and ended on September 22, 1801

    Congratulations! This is perfect for a Sunday morning. I was actually thinking just yesterday about when you all would post this and went to check your channel to see if it had been released.
    The video provides highly informative guidance on preserving the gun, a task I've been wanting to undertake myself in the gentlest manner possible. It's incredibly helpful.
    Regarding acquiring a rammer, yesterday, I acquired a Harpers Ferry Charleville Pattern, also known as the 'Model 1795', made in 1816, but unfortunately, it's missing a rammer. Do you know of any way to obtain original rammers? In your video, you mentioned the option of purchasing I would assume a reproduction one from Dixie Gun Works.
    Just for information's sake, my Charleville Arsenal built Infantry Musket Model 1766/68 bears the barrel markings 'IIIVX' at or around the same spot as your IX. Interestingly, my "Revolutionary Wars Era 1777" doesn't seem to have such markings in the pictures, but I'll verify when I return to my collection.
    Do you have a preferred gun oil for preservation?

    • @Real11BangBang
      @Real11BangBang  6 месяцев назад

      What I've been using here lately is a mixture of beeswax and olive oil. and I would say more olive oil than beeswax This should make a very thin and pliable paste which is pretty much invisible when rubbed into the metal

    • @Real11BangBang
      @Real11BangBang  6 месяцев назад +1

      But as far as just standard lubricant oil I use just straight olive oil in my oil can

    • @Real11BangBang
      @Real11BangBang  6 месяцев назад +1

      And as far as wood oil goes I use tung oil about once a year

    • @Real11BangBang
      @Real11BangBang  6 месяцев назад +1

      And as far as buying original ramrods I really have no clue where you would find them I would say that you might check with the rifle shoppe. They're pretty accurate on making reproduction parts

    in the marine world that duffel cut (new term ive never heard) is known as a scarf joint

    • @Real11BangBang
      @Real11BangBang  6 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, the term duffle cut is actually more of a milsurp term. Basically describing any cut under the barrel band so that the stock could be taken into two pieces and put into a duffel bag coming back from world War II. But yes, I think you're right. This does look like a scarf joint

    Good morning Garrett, and (Ethan where ever you are). How do you guys find out about museum sales. Is there a website that you can go to. It would be nice to find a musket that was kept at a museum knowing that there is a possibility it was cared for. Thanks again guys.

    Use pearl hide glue from Tools for Working Wood. It is reversible. Modern glue will ruin your day. Sand the duffle with 400 grit. Use the barrel to support the glue up. Good luck. SRP

    Oh man that thing is so cool! Just at the beginning of video. Wish I could smell it! 🤥 Too bad RUclips is….(thought crime) Can you tell if vent hole has been enlarged from use or was drilled that size?

    • @Real11BangBang
      @Real11BangBang  6 месяцев назад +1

      The actual diameter is In my books somewhere I had seen it not long before this video was made and now I can't find it for some reason and I have been looking for it like crazy. It says the size of the hole and I can't remember the actual diameter but I do know that it was fairly large. This was mainly due to the French being more concerned with reliability then consistent pressures in their muskets

    Unfortunately I'm going to be criticizing.
    Better lighting. Lights just outside of camera edge, bright on the gun. Not you. I bought some rechargeable divers lights about 3"X4". LED with GoPro connection points. Last about 5 house for $30 on Amazon. Wrist mount, cap clip mount, chest mount. That one is really good for night time having to do something outside.
    Camera HD. I have a go pro. I not a photographer. I use these things for measuring existing building for architectural plans to do remodel & additions. So no advice on what is the best camera for you guys because money is an issue. Apple phone AKA "PodCast" seem to have good results but I think Apple is a cult!
    However, like me,
    As for the addiction to all things guns, proceed in proper era style like you do so well!

    I can never get rust to turn to black oxide when boiling. All it does for me is loosen up the rust so it can be cleaned off lightly without ruining any underlying finish.
