    We have a Jura ENA3 that we got from whole latte love probably close to ten years ago. Jura doesn’t even make that model anymore, but ours is still running strong on its second steam wand. Fantastic quality machine. Morning half caf cafe mochas daily.

    I love my gaggia accademia. Mine is probably 7 or 8 years old now, and we use it daily. It's been one of my favorite purchases ever and has paid for itself many times over compared to buying coffee at Starbucks. Plus Starbucks can't even come close for a quality cup of coffee compared to what I make at home.

      Hi Marcel, These machines can be a life changing and wallet saving experience! Some may get a little sticker shock, but do the math and the really do pay for themselves compared to cafe coffee. And as you mention the quality is better.

    Hey Mark,
    Good vid as usual.
    I've G. Brera based on ur recommendation 1.5 yrs ago, and it's still performing amazingly as good as new after, almost, exceeding 5000 essos.
    More interesting, few days ago I'd something hard ((Looks like nutshell)) stuck in its grinder. The machine stopped the cycle promptly & gave a warning "Without burning the grinder" which is a smart feature adds to the value of the machine.
    It gets even more amazing, when I tell u that I could disassemble the machine & the grinder to get rid of this hard thing from between the burrs of the grinder, and then reassemble it without watching any reviews or how tos, or even having the right set of screwdrivers "hex heads." It's so easy & intuitive, thank you.

      Hi SE, Great to hear from you! The Brera is a rock solid performer! Take care of it with regular descaling, brew group rinsing and deep clean and I will not be surprised at all when 3 years down the road I hear your at 15,000. If you have not already done so, you might want to bookmark our support wiki for the Brera: wiki.wholelattelove.com/Gaggia_Brera/cleaning_and_maintenance It's got everything you need including manuals, diagrams, how to vids and more.

    Thanks for a useful video, and I have a question.
    One obvious difference between either of the automatic machines I've owned and a professional machine one sees in restaurants is the rate of flow. To my eyes, it is beautiful to see the slow, light colored foam coming out of a professional machine, whereas my low end Saeco automatic does the shot in about 13 seconds.
    I see that several machines, (e.g. the Gaggia Accademia) have a flow control dial. Is such a control genuinely useful? Would this control enable one to emulate the slow flow of a professional machine? Would it help one obtain the richness that slow extraction creates? If so, would you not have expected this feature to get more attention than it is getting? All I see is a quick reference here and there, without the emphasis it deserves - if it really works, that is.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  5 лет назад

      Hi Bill, Thanks for the comment and questions. If you've seen my other videos in regards to the Gaggia Babila or Accademia you know I'm a huge fan of the flow control dial. It does slow down the extraction and is perfect for switching between long coffee with fast flow and espresso with slow flow. It is very useful and those two Gaggia machine produce some of the best super-auto espresso. It really does work! That said, do not expect to run a 30 second shot on any super-automatic machine. They produce fine espresso, but are engineered to do it a little faster than commercial semi-automatic machines. Super-auto's are about making it convenient. If they made espresso slower that eats into the convenience for the majority of consumers.

      Thanks very much for the comment. I just came across automaticcoffeemaker.org/espresso-machine/compare-gaggia-automatic-coffee-machines-accademia-babila/ which shows a pretty slow shot when the control is used appropriately.
      For what its worth, I'd gladly wait an extra 10-15 seconds to get that 30 second shot.
      I am aware of some Saeco models that have a similar control. Just for the sake of options, are there any DeLonghi machines that have it?
      Thanks again for your help.

      Hi Matt, Sounds like the newer Jura X8 w/Cool Control is exactly what you are looking for. One of the few machines which makes 2 milk-based espresso beverages like lattes at the same time. Very easy to maintain with no descaling required, simplest milk cleaning on the market and outstanding beverage quality with the ability to mix 2 milk froth types in a single drink. Also has a well designed app so users can customize and save their personal drinks right on their phone. Here's an in-depth review of the X8 I did last week: ruclips.net/video/VyC271sG5e4/видео.html

    Thank you. However, it is still very overwhelming/confusing for me to figure out what Semi automatic or automatic Espresso machine to get for the first time buyers? I'm not looking for ALL bells and whistles. We're mainly drip coffee drinkers but, we do enjoy Americano and latte. What we're looking for Mostly - (1) Makes Good espresso of course. (2) Ease of use and cleaning/maintenance (3) Doesn't take forever to brew as we're in a rush in the mornings and use travel mugs. (4) Milk frothing is good to have (5) anything else is bonus.
    What would You recommend we look into getting for first time buyers? Do they make regular coffee? Thank you :)

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  6 лет назад +5

      Hi AM, Thanks for the question. It can be confusing. To fit travel mugs look to the Gaggia Accademia or Anima. All the machines are ready to go within a minute of turning on and brew as quick as you'd want them to. I really like the Accademia. If switching between regular coffee and espresso for a latte the flow control dial is your friend. Restrict flow for espresso and increase for a big cup of coffee. The Accademia uses a milk carafe for one-touch latte and cappuccino. When done close the carafe handle and steam is run through the milk system for cleaning before returning carafe to fridge for next time. It also has the manual steam wand if you ever want to try that. Maintenance is fairly easy. Descaling, weekly rinse of brew group and that's about it. Time between descaling can be increased significantly if you use the in tank water filter and your tap water isn't super hard. I used an Accademia daily in the studio for large coffees and occasional milk drinks for more than 2 years. I recently went to the Babila which is the same machine without programmable froth density. With my water hardness and filter use descaling is needed after about 700 cups. If you use the carafe regularly it should be deep cleaned once a week. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have more questions.

      @@Wholelattelovepage Thank you, Marc for the quick response. I will check those machines out. One quick question - in your experience does it make sense to own a separate milk frothing device or would it make sense to get an espresso machine that comes with it? Mainly for, longevity of machine, ease of use, may or may not use it often etc.. We're on city water so the water is whatever city regulates. I am pretty sure it is not hard water.

    I would like to see a comparison of which makes the best espresso and coffee, taste wise. I am also curious about the espresso shot size. I only drink double espressos and found super auto shot to be a bit weak. Was setting up a Jura (that I recommended for a friend) and found as I was dialing in the grinder for greater intensity and flavour, the vibe pump would dead head and stall when I went too fine. I was very familiar with the beans as I brought them, and they were fresh from one of the local roasters I deal with.
    Curious as to who had the best temperatures and stability for superior taste.
    Good espresso for good mixed drinks...

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  6 лет назад +1

      Hi TT, Thanks for the questions/comments. Taste wise... It's very difficult to characterize taste between machines due to the number of variables involved. There's the coffee beans, grind size, dose size etc. I will say I have a slight preference for the espresso made on Gaggia machines. But I work with other coffee pros who prefer Jura shots. On most Jura machines when you make a double the machine does a single grinding for a double. On most Jura machines the coffee dose ranges up to ~15g so make a double at the highest strength setting and it'll be made from about 15 grams. On Gaggia machines when you request 2 espresso or 2 coffees the machine does 2 grind cycles. Max coffee dose on most Gaggia's runs about 12g so your double is made from up to 24g depending on strength setting. All the machines have program volumes so you can set the finished liquid volume of your shots. Choking, as you described can happen if the grind is too fine. If it does you can back off the strength setting for a lower coffee dose and/or increase the grind size. As to long coffees and taste, as I mentioned in the video I love the flow control on the Accademia and the Babila. I've been using the Accademia for 2 plus years and now a Babila for the last year for 2 large coffees every morning and a double espresso in the afternoon here in the studio. I'm too lazy to change the grind size all the time so I just up the flow rate for long coffees and turn it all the way down for espresso. It works well for me! When I'm working with a new super-auto machine for espresso I start the setup by setting grind at 1 setting short of the finest, temp and dose/strength) to the highest and 1oz/30ml volume for a single. If the machine has pre-infusion I turn that on. Then pull some shots and make adjustments if needed. Most times I'll end up going to the finest grind setting. I do occasionally run into some coffees which do choke the machines at finest grind setting.
      Hope that helps,
      Marc

    Thanks Mark, as usual great work reviewing and guiding customers through the many options for great coffee.
    I have a question though regarding super-automatic machines. Is there any rational basis for my fear of brewing my daily espresso in plastic, since all super-automatic machine have brew units made of plastic, which will be exposed to 200 degree temperature while brewing? Is there any data on the type of plastic used to make brew units in super-automatics? I've been wanting to buy the Accademia for a few months now, but hesitating due to this fear. I Have looked at a Breville dual boiler or Oracle merely because I am thinking the brewing heat is in metal brew head. Any comment or data? Thanks a lot.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  6 лет назад

      Hi hayan, I can't say I have any hard data other than the materials used in the machines are food grade. I'm also fairly certain none of these machines come with a prop 65 warning when delivered to California. I do see that on some semi-auto prosumer level machines with metal boilers, group heads and portafilters. On those machines it's usually related to the brass used. IMO it's not an issue as companies have started using newer brass formulations. In the past the brass was treated to remove lead to a certain depth and then plated. Even if the the plating is damaged by scratching the older machines do not cause a lead level which causes it to fail testing. I understand your concern. It is valid but I don't think plastics in these machines put you at any risk.

    Gaggia is owned by Saeco, which is now owned by Philips. I noticed that their Academica line-up resembles in design with Saeco PicoBarista, and with Philips E5000 series. Which would be more recommended, in terms of brands ? Feature-wise, they are quite similar, but the Philips models in my country retails for ~ 200$ less then their equivalent Saeco/Gaggia mashines.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  5 лет назад

      Hi DB, Thanks for the questions. There is some crossover in the the 3 brands. I am not familiar with Philips E5000 machines. A quick search turned up electric toothbrushes for that model number. I believe you meant the Anima line and not the Accademia machine is similar to the PicoB. My advice, compare the specs of similar machines across the brands. If identical, go with the one which is the best value.

    • @Wholelattelovepage

      Hi Aldo, The grinders do a fine job! Going between espresso and regular coffee is something I do everyday here in the studio. Currently using a Gaggia Babila, prior to that it was an Accademia. Very similar machines. Both have the flow control dial on the spout so you can restrict for espresso and let it flow faster for longer coffee. I typically the grinder to about 3 notches from the finest setting and leave it there regardless of whether making espresso or a travel mug of coffee. For espresso I use the highest strength setting. For tall coffees a medium strength setting. Only other thing I change is the flow dial. These machines will blow away the Keurig as far as cup quality and cost.

    dear whole latte love, I would like your advise on the best Delonghi choice between two options: ESAM 04.350.S , or the ECAM 23.260. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE

      Hi jm, Thanks for the question. Both have similar capabilities. the 04.350.S has a nicer interface. I'd choose the model with features you desire.

    @wholelattelove Which bean to cup machine gives you the most grind settings for espresso? I'd like to focus on being able to dial in the 'perfect' grind for a better taste.

      Hi UCDUK, Thanks for the question. I'd have a look at the Gaggia Babila. It has 15 grind settings the most of any of the machines featured in this video. Between the grind settings and the flow control you get. lot of control.

    "Accademia" should be the one that takes 8 years to make.

    The Gaggia Academia is just a rebodied Saeco Excelsis Evo. Good, because the new Excelsis is terrible.

      Or is the EVO a rebodied Accademia? LOL. We no longer carry new Saeco products.

      You add it afterwards if that's what you are asking. If you are asking for which brand of sugar to buy then 🤦‍♀️
