I not only think she’s a vocal prodigy, I also think she’s a musical genius. This is her arrangement. At 9 years old. How many 9 year olds could sit down and come up with an arrangement like this. I think the whole thing is phenomenal in every respect.
You must realize that she was not told or trained how to do this. She came out of her dressing room with a piece of paper and said, these are my wishes. She requested it be done in a 6-count rhythm. This child is not just a prodigy, she is a musical genius!!
Amazing, I was sure you saw it, thanks for the wonderful reaction Tara. This song is one of the important steps to understand the singularity of Angelina's talent. It's unreal like her, from a very young person, she choice to use her incredible passion and understanding through music in a splendid way, especially for these legendary songs. She is definitely the only 9-year-old girl who understands and has the courage and the ability to sing this song from Screaming' Jay, so imbued with his power, and reorganize it according to her musical sensibility and vision. I sincerely believe that this it's the most beautiful version of this song, over 60 years since it was written and there are much of versions of it, also interpreted by great singers. 💛🧡❤
A few weeks ago her new EP "Old Enough" came out, although of course you can't react to everything, you definitely have to listen to the 6 special songs, even if it's just for your pleasure, they are so peculiar and different that also extremely inspiring to a vocal coach in the optical of evolution of voice!
I really can't prefer an age of Angelina, she is always so present and involved in what she sings, that the various facets of what she gives us perform the miracle of making her fascinating in every age and in every genre.

These days the word Prodigy has been overused however in case of Angelina Jordan I believe that it has been underused. Her comprehension of music and her interpretation of songs are way beyond her years. Even setting aside her amazing unique voice and her technical abilities, the way she touches hearts and engulfs souls with emotions is overwhelming. I listen to her and my goosebumps get goosebumps.

Angelina was "designed by the Lord to sing." I love that, Tara! No way in the world she was taught how to do *that* at nine, and with such abandon. Absolutely 100% a vocal prodigy; YT is filled with the proof. You may love it all you like, but it is not true. Angelina is a sole product of her granny's desire to have a super star grand daughter. Angelina didn't realize before long after. Maybe not before she was fifteen and almost ruined it and she's still walking on the edge of ruin it on a daily basis under the American influence.

I'm glad you finally did this one. It really illustrates the grasp that she has on vocalization, control, technique, and style even at a young age. Angelina has been working and performing and honing her craft at a master level for 10 years and she's only just 17. She is the most exciting and promising artist I have seen in my 58 years on the earth.
Actually, I have heard it said by other vocal coaches that she's a 17 year old with 16 years of singing experience.

I will always come back to the young Angelina because she has done soooo much incredible work for such a young person but I also appreciate the evolution of her growth in every aspect of her life. She should be a subject of study. Today at 17 Angelina has created her own brand in spite of the comparisons to Amy Winehouse and Adele. Today Angelina has created a new style of music not seen yet anywhere by mixing generational music becoming a timeless and brilliant artist.

We have learned she was around her 9th birthday when this was recorded and thanks for saying so a couple times in the video, but for reasons unknown, the video was not uploaded to RUclips for just over a year. At any age, her voice is my favourite sound in the whole universe. I could never tire of it. It evolves, it matures, it becomes more agile as the years go by, but it always retains a certain distinctive quality that makes it one of a kind and just immensely pleasing, and I always see the same amazing human being when I look at her beautiful unique face.
Hi Tara. Your reaction was quite entertaining. She's not a typical prodigy, iMHO. She has surpassed all measures of being one, and MUCH MUCH more. It's not only the vocal abilities that set her apart, but the reinterpretation of legendary songs which we thought were perfect and no one dared to touch! Your concluding question at the end tries to separate the 9 year old from the 16 year old Angelina. She can resurrect any stage of her musical being anytime she wishes. I submit to you that today's Angelina is an encyclopedia of all music genres, or legends, through her persistent perseverance since childhood. She is at least a genius! I kind of gave up hope over the years that Tara would ever get to this one so this was a great surprise! I too would love to see Tara react to "Now I'm the Fool." She did "Love Don't Let Me Go" already so maybe she'll get to NITF. She must have a huge backlog of requests, though.

Whoever doesn't agree that she is a prodigy is simply delusional. Since you asked I do prefer little Angelina ages 8 through 13 better, nothing to do with her vocals its just a father-daughter thing. Lastly, there are A LOT of great performances when she was little that you have not discovered yet.
Absolutely phenomenal arrangement by our barefoot Princess , Angelina actually arranges this version herself paying tribute to the original artist Screaming J Hawkins a blues musician from the 1950s , Angelina is commanding the performance she is the boss, I’ve been following Angelina ever since she won Norway’s Got Talent at 8 years old, she is a musical genius,I attended Angelina’s live concerts in her hometown In Norway 🇳🇴 in the summer of 2022 her stage presence was stunning her live vocals phenomenal, Angelina is 17 now and she signed with Republic Records at 14 years old , Angelina’s uncle is her Manager and Angelina’s Grandma is her greatest influence, Grandma Mery introduced Angelina to Jazz and the old classic songs when Angelina was one and half years old, great reaction thanks 🙏

Thanks Tara for your excellent reaction , as always. To your 1st question, Angelina is absolutely a prodigy !!! As it seems to go with prodigies, she is also one of the hardest workers at her craft. When you consider her hundreds of covers and now her originals, she has accumulated quite the stellar , nearly perfect, musical resume and she is still 5 months shy of 18. Unbelieveable ! She dusts off songs from former musical geniuses and makes you enjoy her version more than the amazing original. To really get the full impact of the quality of her take on this song, you should listen to the original by Screamin' Jay ruclips.net/video/7kGPhpvqtOc/видео.html. A few other excellent versions, in the last nearly 70 years but for my money this little girl beat them all.
For the second and much more difficult question, my favorite is in a group of 20 or 30 current favs. While she did an excellent job on " I have nothing" not one other singer has out performed Whitney on that song. It is her's for eternity. I think Angelina shows her vocal style best now that she is 17 all of the honing of her artistry came out in her 6 song EP ,each song is different but in a new genre that is just unbelievable great and they are her original sum of which she co produced check out now I'm a fool .as always I really enjoyed your reaction thumbs up to you 👍
Tara, when she was 6 she went to a studio and sang I Who Have Nothing. It was her first time in a studio and after she finished the song she asked did I do well? The technician said, for your first time, you did VERY WELL! There is even one point, after she hit a difficult note where you can see her celebrate what she did while she continues singing. 🎶🎶👱♀👱♀👗👗👠👠❤❤
What makes that performance even more remarkable is its her 1st time in a recording booth, she is reading the lyrics which are in her 3rd language and the video is her 1st take. The thumbs up she gives kills me every time

Angelina was 9 years old in this performance (the video was posted after she turned 10) - Her nationality is Norwegian but is fluent in English even at this age - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the vocal arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version and communicated to the band how she wanted it to be played - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight into how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with some of the same band members at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and communicates to them what she wants to do. The first thing she says is that she wants to start, followed by her saying she wants to start over, later she tells the pianist that the key is too low and that she wants to raise it a half-tone, then at the end of the song she changes the ending on the fly. Wonderful reaction Tara and very insightful on how Angelina instinctively knew how to use her instrument to get certain results. It is mind boggling! And so true she has a God given gift that, of course, she has honed over the years. Not only she was born to sing, but in her own words singing is like breathing to her.
Which I like best, the younger or the older Angelina is like asking me which of my children I love the most, lol.
In all the amazing performances we've got from her over the years, she showed an outstanding timber, tone, phrasing, capability of transmiting emotion, arranging classics to her taste, etc. Obviously, with the passing of time and as she grew up, she has been able to refine her voice in a way that is indescribable. Tara, even at 9 years old everything she does is intentional. Of course she has a God given gift but she is brilliant and works very hard at her trade. She is so much more than a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime singer. Think about the question you asked us: Do we like her more as a 9 year older or as a present day 17 year older who is about to take the world by storm! She is refining her abilities since she was (? since she was born??) very young and we love her equally at any age because we love 'who she is'. Obviously this particular video is super unique but her soulfulness and storytelling qualities must be considered whenever critiquing whatever she is singing.

Some of the studio band members (piano, for instance) are semi-regulars with her and practice for her summer jazz festival circuit. They are probably the ones who brought her to the attention of the producer.
I love almost anything she sings, and some of her performances have brought me to tears many times or led me to play them hundreds of times over the years! But having said that, this Cover of I put a spell on you is maybe the most spectacular thing she has ever done. Not only for her age, but by itself. I've seen and heard many versions, like the original from Screaming Jay Hawkins, Nina Simone, Bette Midler in the movie, Creedence Clearwater Revival and many more, but none of them is as impressive as this little lioness! Her dedication and expression is stellar! I never get bored by seeing the video again! She "knows" Soul and the Blues! Masterclass!

AJ is what I call a once in a generation singer. I will go so far as to say she is a legend.
I’ve listened to Angelina for 5 or 6 years, almost every day, and to answer your question-I cannot ever decide which Angelina I like best. She blew me away as a child singer, as a teenager, and now in the last month her completely original EP is staggeringly good. Like most Angels, I do not have a favorite Angelina song, but there is a cloud of a few dozen that I listen to over and over. I’m in my 70’s and have followed music all my life. Angelina is easily the best singer I’ve ever heard, and she’s that good across five or six genres.
What you heard today is one of the talents Angelina has: take an iconic song, rearrange it herself, pay homage to the original artist, and just kill the performance end of it. What should you listen to next? It doesn’t matter. Pick any title, any genre, any age.

I’m more of a guitar player (of almost 50 years), and I find a LOT of inspiration in Angelina’s entire artistry. She’s one of a kind.
Its not just her vocal prowess either, but its her emotional connection to what she is performing. There are grown adults with years of life to pull from who don't connect like she does. Easily a God given talent!!!!

Did you notice the candle with Screaming Jay Hawkins pictured? And just before she started to sing, she glanced upwards? I truly believe she was communicating with him then.. she does the same gesture to Billie Holliday, just before she starts to sing I'm a Fool to Want You, in her studio version. So respectful to these giants of the music she loves so much ❤
I love both. A great reaction Tera. I had a few "jaw-dropping" moments myself. AJ has said in interviews that singing is like breathing to her. It shows.
She is very special! It just gets better.
What gets me is she does exactly what the song needs, nothing more, nothing less. She doesn't input anything just to show off. She will use something unique for one song and never repeat it again, unless, of course, she thinks it's required for another.
At first I had a thought that WE can channel....but I was wrong. It's our loved ones that pass away before us and they're the ones that can choose to channel and live vicariously through someone still "in this dimension"...where we are. It's not our doing or even our choice and I personally think that Angelina was chosen and there are singers that are living vicariously through her. Through Angelina they can continue on and in a way they can perform and sing. This is what I think could be going on. I say all this through experience. My experience...and this is the ONLY REASON why I'd ever say such a thing like this.

Angelina at any age is definitely a phenom. I’ve never heard a cover she has sung that I didn’t think contained more soul and emotion than the original. Now at 17 years old, with her new EP, has melded Nina, Billie, Aretha, Ella, Etta, Sarah, Bessie and others together and brought them all with her into the 21st century! It puzzles me when people are quick to make the Amy comparison. Where do they think she got her sound? From the same music Angelina got her influences from. It shouldn’t be such a big surprise that they sound similar.

She even hit a F5 with distortion and her own kind of vibrato etc. She's a phenom. Love all her ages for they bring something new and different. She seems to have big growths every other year. Angelina Jordan IMO is Definitely a Vocal Prodigy. Her Grandmother Mary is a Child Prodigy also, her gifts were in Painting Art and Poetry and she is very well known. I am sure she passed on to Angelina so good advise on Poetry and song writing since she was very, very young. In fact, we know Angelina is the Youngest Published Author at the age of 8. The book is called, “Between Two Hearts”. Large feet at age nine to support her 6 foot tall body at age 17. 😊🎉😊

Angelina absolutely captivated me when she was only 7. I'm not an expert on vocals at all, but this child had me enthralled. I could not wrap my mind around how someone so young could (or would even want to) sing songs written half a century or more before she was born with such understanding, such passion and such commitment. To me, I was seeing a miracle happening before my eyes. This conviction has not wavered over the years and now, as a grown, 6-foot tall beauty, she continues to impress and amaze me. Was she a prodigy? Absolutely! Her RUclips record proves this beyond a doubt. The fact that Republic Records (not a shabby outfit) has built a personal studio for her even before she has produced an album only confirms my belief. The best in the business - with the greatest head of hair in show business to boot.😎

And...she's reading the lyrics! But she can still completely inhabit this song. As for the Whitney, I have never thought belting was Angelina's thing (though she nails it in The Show Must Go On and captures the pain of Freddie's impending death). You might like her take on I'd Rather Go Blind or Go Easy On Me or Stay (all of which equal the very wonderful originals). Just listen your way through her covers--I like Happier a lot too. She was a prodigy, but she's a genius at any age. Glad you're doing her.

Just my opinion here., I think that, even though she didn't need to, she was making her 1st appearance into the entertainment world. She knew (she or they, her parents) had everything she needed but made a BIG STATEMENT after winning the Talent contest. And now that she is older and wiser, the music we are hearing is nothing but GREAT and HER likes. And now, you lasted this long without listening or seeing this video. Nice job. There is no doubt that she is a musical prodigy that was born to sing. Btw, that one part where you had a minor criticism of a run, I think that was actually a nod to her Iranian Grandma Mery, with a little Middle Eastern sound. Try listening to it again with that in mind & let me know what you think. Great reaction/analysis of this musical Masterpiece.

It is impossible to choose which Angelina I like best as they are truly one and the same. It is the evolution of her artistry that is so captivating. In the nine year old, you can see the hints of what she will become at 17. And at 17, one can only imagine what she will evolve into in the years to come. But this I know, she was born to sing, a gift from God to this world. And I believe she accepted that responsibility at an early age and lives it to the very depths of her being.

AJ, Courtney Hadwin, and Daneliya Tuleshova all did many early years performances that demonstrated 'old souls with old voices' by age 9 or 10. Incredible. I think grandparents with solid music interests and lots of time with grandkids seems to be a key. AJ's gramma, Courtney's grampa, and I think Daneliya's grandmother (?). Seriously amazing. Despite the imperfections.
Also, she wrote the arrangement for the piece. The musicians called her "the boss."

Tara, I reacted the same way the first time I watched Angelina's video, a 9-year-old singing like an old jazz singer from "Back in the Day!" Angelina is a Child prodigy, influenced and introduced to Jazz music by her grandmother, who loves old jazz recordings. The band during this studio session was so impressed with her arrangement of "Screaming Jay Hawkins's" 1956 classic, that they nicknamed her "The Bross!"
As incredible as Angelina has shown herself to be as a singer from a very early age, no other performance has been as shocking as this performance IMO
I have learned (and many others have commented the same), the last song you heard Angelina sing is the best you have heard. There is something unique and magical in every song, regardless of her age. Her development doesn’t seem linear; she is like an ever expanding circle.
(She never sang this song publicly like this again. Supposedly she was advised that some of the techniques could be unhealthy to repeat.)

I love every phase of her development, I find myself rewatching videos for hours. By the way, since she is now 5'10' I think her feet have been telling us to prepare for a beautiful statuesque woman.🤩
Suspicious Minds Angelina is my favorite. The opening phrase is the broadest fullest warmest well placed notes I’ve ever heard anybody sing ever. She carved emotions out of. Wood and turned them into notes covered in wool. She totally rewrote it into a painful ballad about distrust and gave the lyrics the proper weight of the subject and not some vegas horn band jangle pop over repeated.
Re big feet .. and hands. You see that in videos. That is the sign of a person who will be rather big .. suggestions are that she is currently near six feet in height .. that is mostly guesses based on her standing next to people who we know how tall they are
