    Chris Moyles was spot on , Matthew Macfadyen made the character too likeable. I must admit I didn’t like the look of the real Charles Ingram either and he certainly wasn’t likeable. Chris Tarrant was right in that Quiz made you feel that the couple were innocent.

    • @TheClarksonFan

      I would go a little bit further than that and say that the drama made it look like Ingram was almost coerced into doing it by his wife which made the audience feel that he was innocent as he was dropped into the scheme, but that she did the whole thing in tandem with her brother. Then the drama around the effects on their family life afterwards such as the kids being bullied and the dog being shot also emphasised the notion of their (or his) innocence.

      That’s the problem when a real life event is made into a drama or a film; it never truly reflects on the real story. I agree, the drama does make it look as though he was forced into doing it, but in reality it’s probably a very different story. In my opinion, Charles Ingram was guilty and he wanted to cheat just as much as his wife wanted him to.

  • @SpartasEdge
    @SpartasEdge 4 года назад +45

    I agree with everything said here. The drama made Charles Ingram out to be some afible and gullible idiot that was somehow drawn into cheating, to as far as to making it look like the Ingram's etc were somehow hard done by by being found guilty, but the truth is, they all knew exactly what they were doing.
    The verdict of all of them being found guilty doesn't tally with how the Ingram's were painted in the drama, which seems all the more baffling given that the drama was commissioned by ITV.

      @occono3543 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@SpartasEdgeI suspect the issue, in order to produce the series and not have it locked down by a libel lawsuit, was that the Ingrams were confidentially shown the show while it was being produced and had a signoff on it, under NDA. Charles tweeted about the show after its first episode, calling it fair and balanced or whatever. I think they had a signoff on it which means it was basically trying to tell the story while painting a glorified revision of them. I think that's why it opens with that weird quotation at the start of the first episode, I think that was a hint about the situation.
      Of course, the Weakest Link producers once invited them on for a celebrity special. Could be a choice to embrace them like that by cynical producers. I never liked Weakest Link, anyway.

      At rehearsal on Nov 12th 1999, Tarrant told us all not to worry about early lifeline expenditure and cited an unsporty chap who, not long before, had asked the audience about, "Which of these soccer clubs did the double last season?"
      He said, "The whole nation was screaming ´Arsenal´, but he asked the audience. And didn´t touch the lifelines again until about 64,000."
      Fate there began the scooping up the key constituents of the Morecambe and Wise sketch in order they be cast out again with the trial of Charles Ingram.
      Don´t you think!?
      Tarrant is quite wrong to say that Ingram had been found guilty of a 30,000 Pounds insurance fraud before he played Millionaire?
      He got the date of a previous burglary wrong by a few weeks when reporting a burglary at another address in August 2003. The discrepancy was noticed by a Private Investigator hired by Direct Line who visited Tarrant´s home to push letters drawing attention to the matter through his letterbox in the hours of darkness. Tarrant passed those on to the Police.
      Even though, under normal circumstances the consequences would have proved hardly more serious than an invalidation of the claim or a slight increase in premium, the Police decided to prosecute.
      Ingram was found guilty twenty-five months AFTER he won his money at Bournemouth court on two counts of deception and David Taylor of Wilts Constabulary specified to the media throng on the court steps afterwards "...that´s NOT Fraud".

    After watching The Quiz, I went back and watched the original episode. I think he was a lot cleverer than was made out at the time. When he seems to get stuck on the Norman question at first glance he looks a bit thick. But he's absolutely right that the Normans were 'men of the north' originally from Scandanavia. I think he got most of the way there by himself. He said most of the correct answers before there was any chance of cough based feedback.
    I don't think Diana Ingram helped him on the A1 question. I believe his story that he changed his mind based on audience reaction.

      The cover up over all these years and all the staff involved would cost the same if not more as paying the guy the million to begin with.

      Furthermore, history clearly indicates there have been actual million pound winners in WWTBAM. What makes Charles Ingram different from, say, Judith Keppel or Pat Gibson?
