- I've had this vintage Thundercat ThunderTank by LJN in my projects pile for quite a few years now and it's about time I got it repaired and restored. It has all the common issues, missing tank tracks, damaged rear panel hinges and more. So lets get this vintage classic back into working order.

Growing up in the 80's, Thundercats was my favorite cartoon. I had the sword with the light up emblem. Was such a cool decade. Great video, Toy Polloi as usual!
Great restoration! If you were to add a few custom modifications to the tank body you did not use, you could make a Thunderboat or a Thunderplane or even a ThunderSpaceFighter, similar to the Kenner Super Powers Superman and Lex Luthor vehicles. Sure, none of these were really on the TV show, but they would look awesome with a Thundercat figure in the seat and give your imagination a chance to roar. Thundercats, Ho!!!
I really liked this resto, after 10 yrs they just keep getting better 😊
Thanks 👍
The Thundertank was one of my favourite toys as a child. I have such fond memories of it.
I still remember sitting on Santa's lap at 4 or 5 years old asking him for one and describing what it was just so he knew what to look for.
Thanks ever so much for posting - you're doing God's work!
Thanks Scott
Great Thundercats Thundertank repair and restoration video Premiere, Dave.
You've managed to create an awesome vintage piece, out of the wreckage of two poor Thundertanks.
Nice restoration! Repairs seem solid, and the results look fantastic!
Awesome! Thanks Dave.
Hi Dave, what can I say, fantastic job. I can confirm that those parts weren’t used for another restoration, just a 5 year old me smashing it about. It was well loved and I’m so glad to see it has a new lease of life. Well done!
Thanks. It's nice to see it all back together finally. Thanks again
Hey Dave
Great fix on those hinge pins.
Pretty cool toy.
Take care of Yourself 😊
Dave I have to admit out of all the videos you do. These are my absolute favorite ones. It probes that just about anything is possible with a little ingenuity, time, and some hands on work. Thundercats are one of my favorite toy lines and cartoons from my childhood. However watching do this type of restoration doesn't really matter what you working on. Its just really cool watching an artist like you at work. You are absolutely right when it comes to the sticker effect. This thing is as close to a blank canvas as you can get. So many opportunities to improve on this already amzing looking toy. Keep up the amazing work. As always thank you for everything you do, and I look forward to seeing where you take this from here.
Had this loved thundercats great love your hinged idea brilliant stuff
I quite enjoy the yellow and blue details on the sides that look like the penguin from Super Mario 64 😅
Great job. Didn't knew it was that complex neither. A Jaga's cape replacement video is another suggestion you could add to the Thundercats repairs series.
What a transformation Dave!!! Really enjoyed this, and wonderful to see it in action at the end.
I really should give plastic weld a try
Thanks Luke, it was fun to work on.
Pretty loud toy, but great design. Nicely done Dave. Thanks.
Thanks 👍
Very good to see this iconic toy brought back to life! Nice job sir!
Glad you enjoyed it
Great restoration!! I enjoy watching your videos!! I find it interesting that the tank is over-engineered except for the rear doors!! You would think that with the spring action being so violent (🤣🤣) they would have done something else to those doors. Oh well, it just gave us more content as you repaired them!! Great job as always!!
Well done man! Love your vids but mostly the self satisfaction you must get from fixing the toys you grew up with and love must be extreme! Wish I had your talents and patience.
Terrific work as always. Salute to you.
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow, this is really complex. It’s almost like a Mask vehicle. I thought the toughest thing would’ve been the rubber tank treads. Fantastic video and results. Really enjoyed seeing how everything worked 🙂
Abs plastics are especially hard to work with the older they get. I've had great success with using a solvent based lubricant like tri flow to restore the oils that dry out over time, removing white marks and less prone to fracturing. As for stress fractures, not cracks, adding heat from a hair dryer can make those marks disappear, but be careful. Too much heat can warp the plastics. Even just petroleum jelly can help restore the oils in there and make them less prone to breaking when working with.
Great, now I have to go get a Thundertank.😅 Very good video and fun to watch, Dave. Great job!
Sorry #blametoypolloi
It is a good toy though. I'd never had one before and really enjoyed the chance to play with one. More Thundercats coming along on the channel soon.
I was waiting for the "No Legos were harmed". Great job.
Another great video and restoration! Thanks! I know your mantra is to apply fixes that anyone can do with no fancy equipment etc. but I'd love the opportunity to see what kind of things could be achieve with access to a 3D printer for instance. New channel maybe Toy-Polloi 3D
Amazing restoratian again Dave.❤
Thanks 👍
The Thundertank might be the one of the best representation of 80's sci-fi toy design. The straight angles and curves kinda remind of Syd Mead's designs from Blade Runner. Probably the only thing that it needed were spring loaded missiles which must've been omitted either because of child safety concerns or budget reasons.
Excellent job, it looks fantastic.
This is the restoration I've been waiting for. The three problems with my tank are the broken hinges, a broken guidepost at the back of the claw arm (knowing it is the same plastic as the lids and thst plastic weld works on that, i am good to go), and a missing guide pin in the back tread section (although ive now noticed a rattling inside so I'm hoping its that piece and i can just re-attach it. And out of all of my reasonable condition toys, this one definitely needs a good wash! Looking forward to seeing those flat panels filled with stickers.
If you have plastic well and styrene I think everything on this can be fixed. The stickers I have designed make a massive difference to how this looks. It just looks unfinished and bare as it is to me.
Thanks for this one. Great video. I’ve been hoping you would do this one. Looking forward to the stickers…..
More to come!
This turned out really well. Looking forward to seeing the stickers you come up with! You may want to touch up the red paint on the logo as well.
Cheers!
Another brilliant piece of work. It always gladdens my heart to see a pile of beater parts transformed into a finished piece!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Panthro letting Lion-O drive his baby, especially after a tuneup, only confirms that the Lord of the ThunderCats is a worthy leader.
Great restoration. Loved thunder cats but never had much luck with the toys. My panthros legs were stuck out of the box and trying to bend them just ended up snapping them off. My thunder tank met an unfortunate end. It was in quite good condition, some breaks on the hinges of the top panels but otherwise good until one day I pushed the button to make it pop up and the whole thing tore itself apart. 😢
Sorry to hear that. The Thundertank is very dangerous. I can see this one breaking itself if I fire the mechanism too many times.
This has been massively beneficial to me. I think I finally know why the arms on mine don’t lift up when it’s action feature is pressed. My suspicion now is the tabs could possibly be broke or hopefully just inserted in there wrong. Great video. 👏
Hope you manage to sort it. Cheers
Well done ❤ how you bring toys back from the dead this was such a great video thank you
Awesome work Dave!!
Thank you! Cheers!
I would guess most of the tooling for these old toys is long since scrapped. I'm thinking with clever marketing some of them could be re-released in kit form to adult collectors. Just day dreaming and thinking about the a potential missed market, especially if the tooling has been stored. This looked like a pretty enjoyable project. Cool rebuild from the bottom up with best of parts, nice work.
I always thought it was odd with this toy how the front canons that get exposed when the arms lift seem to point downwards and also that the back canon points directly at the back of the drivers head 😂
Fantastic!
Thanks 😊
Amazing 😍🤗
Thanks 🤗
Brilliant video. One of your most satisfying repairs yet! ❤
Thanks 👍
Never had Thundercats toys as a kid, but loved the cartoon. To me the Thundertank looks way too small, like it was scaled for 3 3/4 Star Wars scale figures. Great job on the restoration as always Dave
Yeah I agree
Beautiful Restoration, Dave! It really is a beast of a toy. They just don’t make them like that anymore. Can’t wait to see those custom stickers. Cheers!
Thanks 👍
I need tracks for mine. 💪😲
Follow the link in the description. These ones are great.
@toypolloi wow that's a great price for replacement tracks. Thanks brother 💪😎
I find it hard to believe that LJN made WWF’s first big rubber toys, which were pretty simple, and they also made this; a highly articulated, very engineered piece…. clearly different guys working on different IP’s
Thunder-Dave! HOOOOOOOO!
🤣😹
I liked Thundercats more than He-Man or G.I.Joe, and yet, I don't think I ever had a Thundercats toy. In the mid to late 80s at my house, it was always G.I. Joe under the Christmas tree!
I used to love the show as well but never had a single toy. That is until now 😊
Hi Toy polloi, what's the best way to open up a vintage mum-ra to fix the light up eyes??
Great work as always, Dave. Will there be a TP annual this year?
Thanks. No annual this year.
@@toypolloi Aw, shame!
Yeah, better to add that metal rod (the paper clip bit) in. It snapped off once, it'll _probably_ do it again. Add as much reinforcement to these weak areas as you dare!
Always better to make it stronger than needed. Hopefully this will last a long time.
💪😎
I have an Orange Lion-O, but the sword it bent like the letter "C"! I tried to unbend it by rubber banding it to a pencil, but it just warps back. Can you please tell me what to do. Thanks! Great channel!
Hi, Check out this video: ruclips.net/video/qo7UCznBIrc/видео.html
It will answer your question and more.
Back when toys were made of real materials, and not the cheap crap we have today.
I loved this toy as a kid, but I just noticed that the gun in the back is just shooting straight through the back of Lion-o's head....
It's a weird design choice. Panthro has to shout duck every time he wants to fire it.
Quick, get Snarf to drive!
Hey i have a he man castle greyskull i blew it up with 2 cherrybombs pack of firecrackers in 2000 pieces can u fix it for me??( 😂
Ouch 🤕 😳
Excellent job, it looks fantastic.
