New PCB's for Tube Radio Filter Capacitor and Selenium Rectifier replacement

These boards were used quite a lot, but, as usual, I wasn't entirely happy with certain aspects of the boards. Some of the solder pads were too small, and size constraints regarding the useable capacitors needed addressing. That is why I decided to do this again.
    I will be sharing the Gerbers on PCBWay's Share section of their website if you wish to order your own. I will post the links to the shared projects below as soon as I have assurance that there are no issues with the boards.

    I agree with the idea of adding pads for line to line and line to ground X1/X2 safety caps. This is a great little radio improvement.

    Looks great. You think it through and your PCB designs are getting better and better. I suspect that when you need a cap that is not to ground you use a cap alone . Some times not all caps are to ground. Like what you do and I will use it when I get on to my projects. Thanks.

    You right about getting PCB's made, as I have almost 10 different prototype boards here waiting to get made. Where I would like to get one of each, but PCBway has a minimum order of five, that makes prototyping hard to do, unless you can find someone who is interested in doing the same type of projects.

    I have developed the habit of using square pads to identify positive connections for caps and diodes. True that the silkscreen already makes that obvious, but it does encourage me to double check when installing a part.

    I Agree with Grant on the "excess" of making a 5 board order created to just proto something to do "proof of concept" testing, footprint accuracy, and making sure locations work well before making a bigger order. PCBWay has offered to work with me on discounts for promoting them, but, to be honest, I would rather try to keep some money and work in the US, even though they (PCBWay) does waaay undercut most any US PCB service for a basic 1.6mm / 1oz copper, 2 layer board. If you go to thicker boards and heavier copper, the PCBWay pricing goes up to the point that some US services are fairly competitive. Someday, hopefully, some service will offer a " 1 board prototype" pricing level that is attractive enough to draw customers. I also always try to pick components with a "3D CAD" drawing, and then check the 3D (I like using "EasyEDA") view to make sure things fit well, it is a great tool to check some things before making orders. As far as component holes and pads, some footprints tend to oversize the holes a bit, I've checked some general specs on lead diameters vs hole sizes, and a good sizing is about 10-15% larger hole than the lead diameter. Anything too much larger and you are filling in a larger void with solder, and risking joint cracking over time and thermal cycling.

    Cool desing. Nevertheless I would highly recommend a larger gap, or even better, an isolation slot between the AC inputs and the rest. Especially when you choose to use a rectangular solderpad.

    Hmm very interesting Manuel, i have a Grundig 2220 CA (designed for the Canadian market at 115v) on the bench at the moment, didn't start working on it yet as i'm waiting for vacuum tubes, but i suspect the selenium rectifier will need to go, i wonder if one of your boards would do the trick. Schematics says the Sel Rect is a B250 C75, but since i didn't pull the chassis out yet i have no idea what the rectifier's form factor is. Guess i'll have to wait until i get a visual on it, but your boards are just brilliant. Thank's for racking your brains for us 🙂

    Per the engineering department at ECG back in the late 70's the full length of the leads must be used to achieve the full rating on the diodes.. The leads are part of the heatsinking for the diode. We kept blowing rectifiers in an electronic organ. Current draw was close to the max rating. After blowing 2 bridges of diodes the tech called ECG and the above was his explanation. Using full length leads solved the problem. I always make loops in the leads and never have had a problem since finding this out.

    Hi Mr. Caildeira, thanks for the video (and all the other one´s) 😉. Have You thought about mounting capacitors parralel to the diodes? They would get rid of switching sparks. and they would filter away any other hf noise. It´s been done in many Power supply´s. Jus a tip 😉. But i like very much to make Boards for replacing Filtercab´s and rectifiers.

    hello... a small suggestion... I would have inverted the position of the 2 lower diodes with the upper ones... in order to draw the track that goes towards the pad with the sign - initially vertical and then at 45° towards the pad ... this is to have more space around the clamping hole. (avoid that the spacer can in any way come into contact with the track). I don't know if I explained myself. Anyway great job

    Nice presentation Manuel, your use of your Mac to do overlays to RUclips were quite good. Too bad you couldn't get your daughter to do the intro however but somehow I think this particular presentation was more of a filler and that you and your family are out enjoying spring days on fantasy Island.

    If you don't do 3 on 1 board, would it be an idea to include ab isolation pcb in the design. Just a blanc piece with fitting holes or only ground tags

    Looking at the 3D rendering is a bit scary as the 2 capacitors look to be fused together. I would rather like to see a gap between them. But I presume it is ok and will work just fine.

    What was the value of that resistor ? You showed three 1k resistors in parallel then only 1 1k resistor ...
