The Statler Brothers were an American country music vocal group founded in 1955 in Staunton, Virginia.
Originally performing gospel music at local churches, the group billed themselves as The Four Star Quartet, and later The Kingsmen. In 1963, when the song "Louie, Louie" by the garage rock band also called The Kingsmen became famous, the group elected to bill themselves as The Statler Brothers. Despite the name, only two members of the group (Don and Harold Reid) are actual brothers and none have the surname of "Statler". The band, in fact, named themselves after a brand of facial tissue they had noticed in a hotel room (they joked that they could have turned out to be the Kleenex Brothers). Don Reid sang lead. Harold Reid, Don's older brother, sang bass. Phil Balsley sang baritone and Jimmy Fortune sang tenor after replacing original tenor Lew DeWitt in the early 1980s due to the latter's ill health.DeWitt died on August 15, 1990 of heart and kidney disease, stemming from complications of Crohn's disease.
The band's style was closely linked to their gospel roots. "We took gospel harmonies," said Harold Reid, "and put them over in country music."
The group remained closely tied to their gospel roots, with a majority of their records containing at least one gospel song. They produced several albums containing only gospel music and recorded a tribute song to the Blackwood Brothers, who influenced their music.
Oh how I miss real beautiful music like this...... Rock and Roll died at the end of the 70s and Country Music finally died in the 90s. And now all we have left is our old Records Tapes and CD and RUclips music videos. I thank you RUclips for allowing a platform for this.
Lew had a voice like a steel guitar. They don't make 'em like him anymore. Rest in Peace.
I wonder if The Statlers Brother's had any idea how much sunshine their music brought, and continues to bring, to so many of us!
And still brings. Some times I just listen to all of their songs. I binge watch
I'm an 18 year old and they bring me sunshine everyday
My mom loved The Statler Brothers and listening to them makes me think of her!
Il live in Louisville and they came here on tour quite often. I saw them every time.
They certainly enjoyed performing and all the love between the audience and the guys was apparent.
I didn't listen to Statler music until well after Jimmy Fortune joined the group. Now, I love Jimmy but Lew DeWitt has stolen my heart. I wish I had seen more of him.
Lew was my favorite❤
Lew was the Better high tenor that mixed better with the group
Great group
The 1st song I heard from the Stanley's was the comedy song Flowers On The Wall
I loved Lew what a talented guy!
Rest In Peace Harold Reid, there will be sunshine for you in heaven!
Lew DeWitt just recently reunited with one of his brothers. R.I.P. Harold Reid.
Had to be quite a reunion.
Yes indeed,, quite a reunion!!!
The Statlers have always been an extremely class act. Very personable and extremely talented. Harold and Lew will always be terribly missed!
You got that right! I saw them in concert 3 times back in the 1980"s. Awesome!
yeah, their drug use and pedophilia was so classy
I doubt anyone will believe me, but my mom is the little girl in this song. She attended one of their concerts when she was a kid, and she asked them to play You Are My Sunshine, but before they got to it, her mom (my grandmother) told her they had to leave. Then, one day she heard this song on the radio
Good for you. God Bless you. Life is like that, many of us who have influenced and done many things that made history and changed life, are like the old saying, " IF A TREE FALLS IN THE FOREST AND NO ONE HEARS IT DOES IT MAKE A NOISE ?
there never has , nor will there ever be a group who can replace the statlers
+david phillips you are so right
+david phillips they fialy put them in the hall of fame
AMEN!!!
The oak ridge boys could put up a good fight, but theyre probably the closest we got
AMEN !!!
R.I.P. Harold Reid, owner of an ultra incredible bass voice. Roadhog reunited with his right hand man, Witchita
Statler's are my all time favorite group. I Tweeted to them last night and they actually answered I told them they were the ring tone on my phone, they said wow, we're a ring tone, we love you! . I was so excited I jumped up and down, called two friends. Made my day.
+Middy Darius they are nice people for sure
+Middy Speir How can I get them on my ring tone? (I'm stupid that way).
Absolutely love these guys, listening to a few of these songs instantly takes me back to the age of 7 (I’m 56) waiting for the mail to come with my 10 cassette tapes for 1 cent from Columbia house!! Of which 3 were The Statlers! Best country music group ever! Long live Lou DeWitt! Hope you’re harmonizing in heaven - amazing talent!
Same, same, same. Age 56, age 7, Columbia House, all of it...
Me too, 55. Saw a lot of country acts throughout the 70's at a campground/theme park (ponderosa park) in Ohio growing up, including the oak ridge boys. Sadly never seen the statler brothers though
Lew and Jimmy .. two of the best tenor voices ever!!!!👍👍👍💕💕💕💕
Great to see Lou. He is a great singer however he is also a great guitar player and does not get nearly the credit he deserves. Listen closely to his guitar work.
Mel MacNeill i know right, Lew was amazing
*Lew
Love Lew's voice in this one
Lew here made it all more beautiful, especially hes guitar work and melodious tenor vocals
Harold Reid, who sang bass for the Grammy-winning country group the Statler Brothers, died on Friday, April 24th, 2002 after a long battle with kidney failure. He was 80 years old...
Between 1965 and 1990 the Staunton, Virginia group had sixty six records on the Billboard Country charts, thirty three made the Top 10 with four reaching #1, "Do You Know You Are My Sunshine" for two weeks in May 1978, "Elizabeth" for one week in March for 1984, "My Only Love" for one week in March of 1984, and "Too Much On My Heart" for one week in November of 1985...
Founding member Lewis Calvin DeWitt passed away at the young age of 52 on August 15th, 1990 {Crohn's disease}...
May both Mr. Reid and Mr. DeWitt R.I.P.
* They just missing having three more #1 records when their "Flowers On The Wall" for four weeks in 1966, "Do You Remember These" for four weeks in 1972, and "Oh Baby Mine (I Get So Lonely)" for one week in 1983, all peaked at #2...
Yeah but they had so much great stuff that never charted!

@@bchbys Thanks for the reply and the good catch, I guess I'll have to proof read all future 'Cut and Paste'..
Thanks again and stay safe...
This is a great song. It is happy. I still miss that voice of Lou DeWitt.
He spell his name Lew DeWitt, saw them in 1980 just love Lew voice.
Do do I. Rest in peace, Lou! Love you!!❤️❤️
Do do I!! Rest in peace, Lou! Love you!!
Rock and Roll Died in the 70s and Country Music died in the 90s and Music has never been the same. Thank God for RUclips
best group ever, hands down.
The GREATEST GROUP EVER in Country Music...BAR NONE!!!
This is by far and away my absolute favourite Statler song. That is saying alot, because of the vast array of great songs.
It's one of my top Statler brothers, but, biy, it's hard to have a single top ONE
Some of the greatest harmonies you’ll ever here! Thanks for all the great years, starting listening to these guys when I was a teenager
Don Reid was brilliant singer
a time when the vocals weren't drowned out by the instruments
Love the classics..sometimes we just need to sing our way home..
Angel Hunt MN
@Angel Hunt I have done so on several occasions. And this song is a great one to sing to while driving, IMO.
Grew up with the Statler Bros. singing in local churches in
the Shenandoah Valley region of VA. They never sounded
the same after Lew passed, but Jimmy's tenor allowed
them to stay together and keep blessing us with music.
Jimmy was actually the better singer, more stable, more controlled, but Lee’s voice just floated around up there in the stratosphere. I could listen all day
@@rickyedwards7504 completely agree. Jimmy was the better singer but Lees voice was just incomparable to any singer I’ve ever hear and I loved it too.
My wife and I first learned of the Statler Brothers in 1973. From that time on we were hooked. We bought most of their vinyl albums and attended at least a half - dozen of their concerts. We have seen both Lee and Jimmy in concert feel that both were excellent.
I think that that era of country entertainment is gone forever and that those 5 men - Harold, Phil, Lew, Don and Jimmy - were born to sing and perform. I thank their wives for sharing them with us all those years.
Best country vocal group ever. I saw them in concert 3 times in the 1980's. Lew DeWitt had retired by then. I think anyone could relate to their songs, no matter what genre of music they prefer.
❤
The best singing group the world has ever known. This is one of my favorite songs.
RIP Harold Reid
THIS IS REAL MUSIC
You can't find real talent like this today.
You got that right. Totally agree.
Agreed!
I admit Jimmy is good, but I love Lew's SOFTER voice. It wasn't so "loud" and didn't "take over" like Jimmy's can sometimes do. I wish things never changed and could stay the way they were. I guess that's the problem with life, ha.
They got paid by Cash.
God Bless The Statler Brothers, Thank you Dad For Taking Me To see them!
God Bless You Dad!
Harold Reid passed away. R.I.P. Mister Bassman.
When 'country music' was about the message instead of T&A, sweaty pecs and 55 gallon white hats.
RIP Sir thank you for sharing your gift with us, this is my fave of you fellas! Grateful my gramma shared you with me on her 8 tracks.
Wish some group would pick this up, just dont hear that beautiful harmony anymore. ❤❤❤❤❤
WERE? Still are, imo. Love them so very much. I'm not a Gospel fan...I'm Catholic, took Latin 4 years:) But Lordamighty, the Statler Brothers, Johnny Cash and the Carter Family. Bring them all to me when I'm stranded on a desert island, please
I have loved them for so very long. I still have all the albums.
When Lew got sick and had to leave the group they never sounded the same.
Donnie, Harold and Phil were still as perfect, but the harmony of those four could never be replicated.
Then they retired. And Harold passed on.
But, oh, I’m so thankful to still have their beautiful songs.
I love the Statler Brothers and I love this song!!! Yes, as PG 1171 here says they are an extremely class act, very personable and extremely talented!!! Yes, Harold and Lew will always be extremely missed!!! Thank you to the Statler brothers that are still here!! And thank you to the seller brothers, our brothers, on the other side!! Harold and Lew!!! And thank you to their wives and families and the band and their families!!! And to whomever is responsible for bringing this to RUclips!!
Beautiful!!! One of the best country groups ever! Truely legendary.....
😢R.I.P. HAROLD REID
Thanks for this classic & all the extra info. Nice to learn more about them. Long Live Lou DeWitt. Always love his tenor growing up ! ! Always made every song they sang fun & entertaining with his accents & inflections. Man they always kicked butt ! Gotta love the Statlers.
wow i miss Lew DeWitt's voice. i LOVE Jimmy Fortune but there's just nothing like these 4 guys.
Lew sang in falsetto a lot. I think Jimmy's voice is a little smoother. They are both great. I think Jimmy was the perfect replacement for Lew.
@@kitteagirl I agree 100%
so true! amazing together
I echo that sentiment totally
You got that bckwards sister, Jimmy is the cutter, and better singer who was ever a Statler Brother. YEAH ! !
The Statlers were one of the best groups in Country music and thery still get me into the music even after over 40 years . I can remember listening to them and Elvis , Johnny Cash , June Carter Cash , Roy Orbison . Those guys made music fun .
James said
They were my dads favorite group. God rest his soul.
4 terrific gentlemen great music RIP HAROLD
I am so happy this has been posted. They were absolutely the best of the best.
Don has always been my favorite, but they were all great. Lew was so unique and they alway put on a show you could take your whole family to see. Thanks for the post brotherhamlet.
Goodbye Harold and Lew. We will always love you.
Oh Lord when I die take me back to when the Statler Brothers were singing great music forever
Just wouldn’t have been the same without Lew
Yes, ANYTHING WITH LEW IS PRICELESS. : )
Wonderful shenandoah valley virginia boys
There will Never be a Quartet Like the Statler Brothers !!! They are THE BEST Ever !!!!
I didn't think I liked country music and then one day the Statler Brothers came on the radio.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to call my mom!
I also prefer Lew, but you gotta admit Jimmy had some hella big shoes to fill. I'm a little amazed that he was ever really accepted by the fans, even though he did a bang-up job.
@Noldi400 It's kind of like Shemp replacing Curly on the Three Stooges. Shemp had some big shoes to fill as well, but in the end he held his own just fine. Jimmy may not have been Lew, but Jimmy did a fine job as well, I believe.
Oh man, Lew's tenor was fantastic. RIP, Lew.
The guy withe the deep voice reminds me of a rumble strip , love it 😍
That would be Harold Reid, he passed a few months ago, rip
I've seen them in concerts 5 or 6 times. They never get old.
Lew DeWitt passed away way too early. Hard to believe it's been almost 30 years. What talent he had!
I like this!
simply incredible. nothing like these guys and the Oaks
Only a very loving dad could write such beautiful words for his young daughter, who praise her for the whole world. Be Happy!
My favorite group
My favorite group. Miss you Lou Dewitt, loved and still love to hear him sing.
Oh, goodness, I've not heard this song in SO many years!!
And just this morning, it has been reported that Harold Reid, the bass vocalist and one of the founding members of the Statler Brothers, passed away last night at the age of 80.
RIP Harold Reid 🙏😔
Don was 10 years old in 1955, he was born in 1945. I read somewhere that Don was 14 when the Statler Brothers got there start.
I miss them.
this was the first casstette tape I ever bought, had never heard of the Statler Brothers at the time, I wore that poor cassette out so bad when it clicked I'd have to pull it out and "forward" it with a pencil to get past the scotch tape!
i was looking looking and looking but now i found them myfirst time to hear their voice when i was 20s its very awesome for me now im turning 43 they are still fabulus voice godbless💖💖💖💖👌👌👌👌👍👍👍👍😇😇😇😇😇👪👪👪👪from the heart of of the phillippines...
Any video with showing Lew is priceless! Thanks!
Harold..thank you for writing this song.....
I have always loved the Statler Brothers and their music. I saw them and their bus in person and was given a tour
that's country!
I know this may be intended a happy great song, but as I play and sing this song to my dog , she licks my tears as I'm singing bc I know one day god will call her home. But today I made sure she knows how much I love her.
I love you Lew!!!!!And always will.
Statler's were awesome!!
You probably already got your answer, but they all retired. And Lew (the one with the guitar) passed away (in 1990 I think). :( Have you discovered "Grandstaff" (Don and Harold's sons)? They look and sounds JUST LIKE them! :)
Country folks are class acts, and all heart...♡♡♡ @RonnieDunn was the first one to note a Twitter message. I hollered so loud I grabbed my pillow so my neighbors didn't make a noise complaint. 10:30 at nite and squealing over Ronnie Dunn♡♡♡ Most of them do acknowledge. Lucky us!
The Statler Brothers are the music I was raised with. Never be anything like them again. Amazing people and beautiful voices.
My all time faviorite song
My favorite song! RIP Harold!!!
I was in the Navy in 1964 when I heard Flowers On The Wall. I came on leave to New York from Mayport, Fla. and sang it to my friends. They didn't believe it was on the radio. When it came to N. Y. they liked it. I believe I had a little part in that. Great group and times. Always loved this song also.
james gallagher thank you for your service
Rip Harold
Rest in peace, Harold. :(
I remember their greatest hits album we used to play continuously in the record shop on Music Row…..so many great songs but this is my absolute favorite
Thanks for the post. (I loved Lew.)
Love the statlers thanks for posting.
RIP Harold Reid
RIP Harold Reid
THE BEST quartet in country music!
They wrote most of their songs. I especially like this one from the late 1070's. No wonder Kurt Vonnegut once called them Americas Poets.
I So-Love The Statler's!
These guys are my favorite. I was fortunate to grow up near them and go to there 4 th of July concerts. They don't make guys like this anymore.
Really ??? I Didn't Know About This !!!
Lol, what was my comment about 6 years ago?
