There was actually a follow-up to this ball called the Double Helix. The stripe was red. That’s all I remember. No one ever threw it on a telecast, as opposed to the regular Helix which was thrown by every Brunswick staffer on every show to try to promote it. I only knew one person who had one. In 1997 it cost $299.99 which is nearly $600 today.
Broooo, you’re right. It was red and blue I think. I remember it collected dust on the top shelf at the Pro shop because nobody would spend $300 on it given there was nobody using it to even see if it was worth drilling. I believe the gold area is urethan and the rest reactive resin. Idea was to roll perfectly on gold area first then flare and the reactive area took over.
The overlays of each ball going down the lane being like ghost like so you can see each one from start to finish was awesome. Really emphasizes the difference in line and movement
Man you had me worried since it's been two weeks since a video, now I see it's because you were building up excitement for this rare gem! I'm also excited for your future videos 😉
You have to redrill it so your PAP is on the large pin/weight hole so that your initial track lines start on the urethane strip. Otherwise you’re getting early hook from the reactive resin portion and then flaring onto the urethane strip midlane and then back to resin.
I think Walter won a few titles using this in the late 90s ??? I forgot exactly what years it came out ? But i do remember seeing Walter use them on some shows . They also released a 2nd one with a red stripe instead of gold ..... I remember they went for over $280 at most shops in NorCal at that time , which was stupid expensive for a ball !!!
I know you probably have already been asked this but why havent you moved over to 2 handed. You have a great style and you score just as well if not better!! Love the videos as always my man keep it up!!
The helix didn't really hook much but the double helix was a skid flip monster. I still have my double helix somewhere. Some day I may have to dust it off and throw it again.
Packy H. did a video with one of these a few months back. The two different coverstocks had shrunk differently with age, and you could hear the ball flipping between them on the way down the lane.
I have so been waiting for this ball. Only saw it once on TV used by Walter Ray. No one around here ever used one. I could have sworn the resin stripe was a little wider than that. That ball uses up everything it has on the early part of the lane and it panting by the time it gets to the pins. Can see why it wasn't a very popular ball. Looked pretty cool going down the lane though.
I think I remember they actually had a couple different widths and the pro shop would order the proper one for how you threw the ball. A higher rev rate is going to flare off of the urethane before the end of the pattern with a narrow stripe. A low rev rate might never reach the reactive portion of the ball if it was a wide stripe. A guy on my team shot a 300 with one back in the day and I'm pretty sure his was wider too. He did have a fairly high rev rate for that time period. Unfortunately he passed about 10 years ago at an early age so I can no longer ask him.
I believe it was the cost more than the fact it wasn't good. I had one and loved it. It also had a very distinct set of drilling instructions at the time to get it to roll correctly for how they threw. Kind of like pin to pap distances before people knew what that really was. It was suppose to hit the urethane for some many flares then flare onto the reactive.
Quantum balls were more expensive than Brunswick's main line balls to begin with, this had a premium on top of that. I picked my Helix up when they were on sale on an online store in the US (I"m in Australia, and I never saw one of them for sale here, though a friend of mine bought a Double Helix).
Every saturday I go bowling with the better 3/4. Every saturday with bowling AND a 220 upload is even better. Being the 300th like is pretty fuego too.
I had a Helix years ago. Gave me a headache watching it go down the lane when it flipped . I thought it was solid reactive. With the stripe being pearl reactive . But I cannot remember for sure
Hi the stripe was definitely urethane and the rest reactive , was meant to give you a smooth easy roll with length before it hooked on the rest of the ball .
@martinboyd3672 ahh fair! All I know about these are that they're extremely rare and they bump going down the lane because the reactive resin shrinks leaving the stripe be slightly raised lol
The heavier weights have a bigger urethane stripe around it. I have no idea how heavy yours is, but for a 2 piece ball, this thing literally looked like you sent a Rhino down there when it hit. This was THE hybrid before hybrids were cool. And yes, the Double Helix is a lot better.
I remember when this came out, and it was an interesting idea but failed miserably (iirc). Anyone who didn't bowl in the early reactive era (1994-onwards) would not believe how dry the lanes were.
Your own modern version of the Quantum Helix? Take a strong reactive and carve out a section to be filled with plastic. You could even get all scientific and figure out exactly where to put the plastic if you threw the ball and looked at the flare lines before cutting into it. Maybe even a bow tie instead of a straight stripe? Possibly the most skid flippiest ball ever known to mankind? Am I thinking crazy?
ActualllyTue Helix was a good ball. Alot of professionals threw it in tournament back in 96/97. This Helix looks dead, because that cover was Power Coil 18, which had some good bite.
