I really enjoy 80’s Joni. She spent the 60’s and 70’s looking in the mirror to inspire her art. But then in the 80’s, she held the mirror to the world and came out with her commentary on commercialism, corrupt politicians, economic inequality, environmental injustices and greedy televangelist. Music critics bristled at the time. Joni was a visionary as much of her insights from 40 years ago are still relevant and seemingly true today. The line you questioned referenced a toupee (a man’s hairpiece). I think she was observing that a bald man hides his baldness with fake hair, while a man with a full head of hair shaves it all off.
