The interesting thing is, if you look at the german contributions as a whole, we are in the Top 10 of most successful countries, though our 70s to 90s period was REALLY good (for the most part), while the last 13 years were not so kind, except for 2 surprises (Michael Schulte und Isaak). But that bad period somehow made us look extremely bad (other countries just had the advantage of that happening before the Internet ^^). Watch Schlager-Lucas "Germany in Eurovision" and you get a really good feel of how good we actually are on the average basis. - Fun video for sure, keep it up!
Swedish person here - With Nicole's song from 1982 you need nothing more to be a solid ESC country in my eyes. It is THE song that defines Eurovision for me.

Very entertaining video, had a great time watching it...thanks! Really great selection of songs as well (maybe could have used some Nussecken und Himbeereis...but maybe next time 😄)
Blood & Glitter is one of my favourite Eurovision entries ever. This is why I love Eurovision, it introduces me to acts I might never have had to oportunity to hear otherwise. Within a week of hearing B & G, I'd bought every studio album from Lord of the Lost, with the exceotuion of their classical crossover works. I listen to them every single day.
You have to understand the time and world events in the 80s to understand why Nicole won. The Cold War was so present, threatened to escalate and people in Europe just wanted real peace. The song simply captured people's attitude to life at the time and that's why people loved this song.
Do we really think enough people understood German to take that into consideration at the time? In my case I just like the song, did so long before I learned some German in school.
@@juwen7908 I'm pretty sure that was not in the ESC performance as I have seen that quite a few times. I searched for the English version now and it's the first time I have listened to that. As with Nena's 99 luftballons it's 99 times better in German.
@@janpersson9818 She sang the refrain of the Song in different languages. Italian, english, french, spanish and german. And after she won the contest the howl Song was recorded in many different languages.
Hmm... Do you perhaps have the "My Eurovision Scoreboard" application, thanks to which you can clearly arrange all the songs from specific years of the Eurovision Song Contest in a short listening session? If so, could you provide your nickname? 😅
Hi Im from Sweden and my favorite German Eurovision song except for ofc Nicole is acually the group Wind with the song Fur Alle and it came 2nd. I also like the other Mary Roos song that she sang in 1984 I think, better than the one from 1972 which is my birth year.
I wrote it already but to be sure you can notice it: "Mary Roos had another ESC appearance in 1984 with "Aufrecht gehn"/ "Go Upright." The day before, she found out from a phone call from a friend of her husband that the friend was pregnant. From Mary's husband. The lyrics of the song are awesome with the context. But she was of course out of control during her performance."
Hm - no Cascada and no Lena Valaitis with Jonny Blue? Ann Sophie didn't deserve the last place - the song is so much better than that. Not necessarily a winner, but she deserved a place in the middle of the field. PS: Alex Swings Oscar Sings was in 2009, not 2008 - and he didn't finish in the bottom five (Sweden, Malta, Lithuania, Spain and Finland where in the bottom five that year). In 2008 we were in 23rd place with the No Angels.

Eurovison is also a political, everytime Germany has a good standing around the other countries they are placed better. Also the situation the world is in has a big influence like Nicole with " ein bisschen Frieden" hit the spirit of the time, because the fear of existing and starting wars the massage " a little peace" helped the song a lot. In the last years Ukraine got good positions on the Eurovision, and in my opinion it was not because the song or talent at least not alone.
It was so sad that Ann Sophie came last. It ruined her self esteem. She was (still is) so talented, but was too afraid to show herself performing the years after ESC…. 🥺 she didn’t deserve that. Her entry definitely had Top 10 potential ✨ Joy Fleming? Legend. Nothing more to say 🤩
Joy was amazing! THE best german soul voice ever. You should also listen to her former bands "Joy Unlimited" or even "Joy & The Hit Kids". They played more of a Beat/Soul/R'n'B type of music. Joy Unlimited's album "Schmetterlinge" is available on Spotify and definitely worth a listen. R.I.P. Joy
You should have included some more Raab productions e.g. like "Guido hat Euch lieb" 😁 Actually Stefan Raab is one of the most successful Eurovision producers from Germany - Lena's was also one of his songs.
The song by Joy Fleming was translated into Dutch years later with the title Zing met me mee. It became a hit for Gerard Joling, who also competed in Eurovision in 1988. I was hoping that you would also show the entry by Guildo Horn, titled Guildo hat euch lieb. When I need a good laugh I sometimes watch this hilarious performance on RUclips. I believe it was written by Stefan Raab whose entry is one of the ones that you showed here.
@@AK_loves_Eurovision No, I didn’t know it either when the Dutch version was a hit. Only a couple of years later I heard the original song in a RUclips compilation like yours about the Eurovision Song Contest. Then I thought that the German song sounded familiar and then realized that I knew the Dutch version, which has completely different lyrics by the way.
I agree with you, that 'I don't feel hate' is childish. But if I had kids, I would be afraid of playing it to them, cause probably they would like it and play it again and again and... (Dauerschleife) until my head exploded 🤯🤣 Greetings from Berlin 😎
Schade, Texas Lightning und Guildo Horn hast du definitiv vergessen. Chance verpasst.
She’s only the second choice”. Hat dann einen komischen Beigeschmack. Und 2015 war echt stark. Habe „goodbye to yesterday“ immer noch in meiner playlist :D
I agree, that Joy Fleming’s song was one of the best, that Germany ever sent to the competition. Ann Sophie also gave a powerful performance and was really robbed in 2015. On the other end of the scale and as the worst of these ten entries, I would place „Ein bisschen Frieden“ from Nicole, which is just super kitschy and annoying.
Kitschy in Eurovision, say it ain't so ;) I like it and one of the Eurovision winners I'll remember more quickly should I have to make a list out of my head.
Joy was made fun of like an old matron and the dress was forced on her. She was 30 yo. Nicole's song spoke to people's hearts because it was the time of the nuclear arms race and cold war. In the GDR it wasn't welcomed and wasn't played on the radio because they (the higher ups) didn't just want "a little peace". I guess it was more that West Germany won and the socialistic countrys didn't competed at all. Mary Roos had another ESC appearance in 1984 with "Aufrecht gehn"/"Go Upright." The day before, she found out from a phone call from a friend of her husband that the friend was pregnant. From Mary's husband. The lyrics of the song are awesome with the context. But no ones knew about it. But she was of course out of control during her performance. Guildo Horn's song was written by Stefan Raab, also to break up the ESC's rigid image. Guildo was the first artist to leave the stage during the performance. Since you talked about Las Vegas, look at the opening of the ESC 2011 in Düsseldorf. approx. 8 min. Video title Eurovision Song Contest 2011 - Grand Final - Full Show (Imo you shouldn't tell her before how many ⬆️ and ⬇️ songs it will be.)
"They did Joy dirty." Yes, they did.
Hope your channel blows up!! The production quality is top notch, I love it! Greetings from the Netherlands ☺️
Thank you SO much 🥹 that really motivates me
Ann Sophie and Jamie-Lee are two German acts that to this day I don't get how they placed so low.
did you see jamies outfit

Same. I would have picked either Dschinghis Khan or at least used "Theater" from Katja Ebstein to not have three 70s ballads.
