I'm late to this video, but what I don't understand about DSP's "commentary" is that although he's the one playing the game, the character he's controlling is somehow at fault. As if it's a sentient being separate of himself. Truly perplexing.
***** shit if the A.I was half as smart as the devs claim they were trico would just eat him, throw him off a ledge, kick him of a ledge or just run away from him.
This game was incredible for me. I disagree that it wasn't a masterpiece. Ueda's about communication through input and feeling emotion in games through getting AI to do something for you. Whether that's Yorda or the Colossi, there's a feeling to interacting and getting the game to respond to you... I think he focuses on this more than the average developer. There arc both the characters go through--where Trico is more difficult to control at the beginning and instantly responding to you is really effective. The emotion this game illicit was more powerful than the 100 hours I spent in FFXV--which failed to connect to me personally--and it was worth it. This game's harboring same similar criticisms to Ico and Shadow--I'd _hope_ the minimalist approach to storytelling will be more appreciated in the future.
GoatJesus A lot of time was clearly spent refining interaction between The Boy and Trico, and that part works, but there are mechanics in the game that literally aren't used for anything. It's shockingly bare and unfinished.
Can you give some examples of mechanics you felt weren't used? I felt like I had to use--basically everything. So I'm just confused. Frame-rate and camera certainly needed work (like Ico and Shadow.) I would love for the game to be longer. More content the better. But I didn't feel like it was really bare or unfinished.
GoatJesus Pulling out spears basically just seems aesthetic and is functionally pointless. I've worked through most of the game again now, and it also seems Trico and The Boy don't have any kind of relationship mechanic. He's as responsive and trusting and affectionate the moment you free him as he is at the end of the game. Trico also seems to be invulnerable, which is a very poor decision. If he could die horribly because of The Boy you have instant stakes. Ueda's games always remind me of Another World, which is also built on a central relationship between two characters, in which your friend will die if you fuck up. There's a built-in response to Trico not responding to or understanding commands, but that also seems suspect. I really liked the game. Although I didn't pay full price for it, I'd say it's basically worth it for a certain kind of gamer, but it's not perfect. This isn't even mentioning the performance.
From what I remember reading, apparently, doing stuff such as pulling out the spears, petting him regularly, and cleaning blood stains on him makes him more responsive to your commands. Not sure if that's true or not though.
scorptatious Doesn't seem to be, but maybe I just can't see it operating. I bonded a lot with that dude, and I don't feel like it changed anything. I mean I raised it as a negative, but I actually like all the shit Trico lives through, and how easily he shrugs it off. It really enforces that he's this fearsome, powerful creature who, absent any outside influence, is sweet-tempered and kind, and gets frightened and anxious when he can't see this little boy. Trico always seems like the dependent in their relationship. He's almost totally lost without The Boy. BUT that's even more reason why there need to be at least a few occasions when fucking up leads to grisly death for Trico. How can you match the motivation of having this massive creature whose whole world is focused on you brutally die because of your mistake? That's the one element the building of their relationship was missing.
Could you imagine if DSP actually tried to raise a dog? He'd end up kicking the fucking thing. It's endlessly hilarious how many times Trico straight up disrespects him.
Wow, he is actually bad at this game. I wasn't aware that it was possible to be legitimately bad at this. I mean, I have seen people take a while to figure out what they were supposed to do, but not fail to this degree.
Phil always finds a way. That's why I keep coming back to watch him suck, he is a freak of nature. I mean for fuck's sake the guy has trouble with Pokemon sometimes, until he gets another goddamned overpowered Pokemon like Beldum.
Jesus Christ, I have to pause two minutes and 18 seconds from the start already. Alright I recently rediscovered DSP after about a year and a half of (blissfully) forgetting about him and watching some stuff. I was going through an old compilation of his fails, which showed him being... him while playing The Last of Us. Imagine my fucking surprise when I begin typing "This is how you don't play The Last [of us]." and seeing The Last Guardian come up in the suggestions. Given basically everything this game centers around, and especially since it can require you to think about things, which we all know isn't Phil's strong point, I knew this was already going to be a disaster. Normally, I would watch the entirety of a video, or at least a good portion of it, before commenting, but Phil's already making "wisecracks" that ruin the atmosphere of the game. This will be the first time I've seen the more recent Phil, since late 2015 is probably the most recent I've seen him. It seems that he's become even more annoying since then. While I'm sure sure he will have some legitimate grievances with this game, I can hardly give him credit for anything legitimate, since when you have hundreds of complaints about something, some of them surely will be true, much like how throwing 200 darts at a dartboard and one of them being a bullseye doesn't make you good at playing darts. Also, I played and beat the game myself, watched jacksepticeye's entire playthroughs, and watched a friend play to the point where you're in that cage and have to roll it around. Something I wondered about through a large portion of the game was if it's possible for Trico to be killed by the armor soldiers if it takes too much damage. If it's possible, I take it we'll find out watching Phil play it. Though I have a feeling this TIHYDP is going to be painful to watch, I'm genuinely excited to see how long it takes him to make a connection between the stained glass eyes you have to destroy so Trico will move on, and the soldiers that carry the "shields" that have that symbol on it (probably not long even though it's Phil we're talking about), as well as seeing just how well he does knocking the shields out of their hands while being chased. I could just imagine him getting carpal tunnel syndrome or tendinitis from having to mash the buttons so much to escape time after time. Hopefully he can put his "I'm pressing buttons" skills to good use.
Not too far into it so far, but jeez, he was pretty much set at not liking it from the very start it seems. No wonder he didn't enjoy it. I mean, for anyone else, I can understand some of the general frustrations they may have with the game, but Phil here attempts to rush through nearly every game he plays so he can pump out videos and get to the next one rather then taking his time and enjoying them. So he's not exactly the kind of person who could give this game a fair review. EDIT: Watched the whole thing and wow. I didn't even think it was possible for him to fall off of Trico to his death so many times. I don't think I've ever experienced an issue with holding on to him and not falling off. And of course he misses the whole point of the way this game does storytelling. Ueda's games focus on minimalism, in which they give you the general information, but leave the rest up to the player's imagination. Games like this are wasted on Phil.
If he had played the previous games from Team Ico he would have learned to adapt to the controls. Admittedly the camera controls are stiff at times so I just the camera do most of the work. Also the way this game works is through time and investment with the characters. That's pretty subtle and rarely is seen in other games. It's a shame that Phil doesn't understand nor will he ever.
Funny how this game is only frustrating when the person playing makes it. I've played this game about 5 times and each time was pretty smooth with the exception of Trico not listening from time to time. This game requires patience and observation as I figured out you have to watch and see if Trico responded to commands, which DSP didn't use obviously, and if he didn't respond in the first few minutes by turning his head or even flapping his wings which he does before jumping try again and see if he responds. This makes the game a lot easier and a bit less frustrating unless they're just that bad.
I'm astounded by how long it took him to figure out how to interact with the core cage. And then he gets mad because the game doesn't explain things that aren't important to the relationship at the core of the story and game in excruciating detail. What a moron. I'll admit I'm still not sure who or what the last guardian is. Don't really think it matters though.
watching all of this pain made me glad Phil doesn't have a real-life pet (at least from what I know) if he treated it the way he treats Trico... Dog doesn't immediately understand your command? Bugged dog mechanics Cat won't come to you? Bugged cat mechanics Rabbit doesn't let you touch it? Bugged rabbit mechanics
This game is really frustrating, but gorgeous. But, he shouldn't judge the game on the controls. He made Trico go down, He did the jump control. And does he NOT know that Trico is afraid of that symbol!? That's why he wasn't attacking in the first place. If you think the game is shit, Then here's an idea: DON'T PLAY IT
Just had to look up this video again. 49:07 is honest to god one of the biggest laughs I have ever had in my entire life. Someone used to have it isolated on youtube but I think it got taken down. Once you notice the way the kid just completely eats shit right away as the music swells and Phil's child-like "here we go! 😲" it becomes 1000000000x funnier.
I get why trico doesn't listen sometimes as training real animals is a pain and takes patience. Watching dsp play this is like watching a crappy dog owner trying to control their dog
You know... I'm convinced DPS has no actual love or empathy for ANYTHING or ANYONE...if someone he knew died or taken Ill...it be a half-assed condolence and then immediately focus on churning out his videos.
It's no masterpiece, and the performance is fucking shit, but it's more a game than most AAA releases and the story pulled at my heartstrings something fierce. How long did he take to finish it? Just ignore me if this is in the video.

seems like a little gem of a game. But gamers thesedays are entitled little shits who want Battlefront, CoD and Battlefield type games. Some of those can be ok, BF1 is pretty good but throw a game like this at your casual or even hardcore gamer and they lack the emotional Q to grasp what's going on or immerse themselves. I challenge anyone to play something like Child of Light or this then tell me it's shit. It's like my dog growling at them and seeing how they react which tells me all I need to know about them: ie they're not very nice people.
Crocmaster McGeezax This game is a fucking bore, don't pretend just because Phil is playing it that a mediocre game suddenly becomes special. Incompetent Phil + incompetent Trico = incompetence incarnate
not tricos fault that phil's a fucking idiot.
***** shit if the A.I was half as smart as the devs claim they were trico would just eat him, throw him off a ledge, kick him of a ledge or just run away from him.
nah trico is a just animal trying to figure shit out while dsp is a fat crying manchild
I laughed so hard when the beast just flinged Phil of his head into oblivion.
Blaming the game for his own mistakes. Because that's fair. This guy is impatient af
"HOW DO I USE RATIONS!!"
Don't worry Trico we still love you hugs to the huge doggy

49:19, that fucking voice crack killed me lmao
It's not the games fault that you were obviously not born to be a gamer. It's a good game you just don't know how to play it.
42:07
Always *ALWAYS* stand *next* to Trico when using his lightning ability.
49:16
I swear Phil's just blind sometimes.

i only watch this i show you dont plays they just sum up his whole playthough
i have yet to see one where the comment section defend dsp
This is the "quality content" he is always talking about? It's practically unwatchable.
Awesome work...Working on my own version. Love your TIHYDP's
Thanks, I appreciate it! Can't wait to see your version. :)
Oh wow 5 years later you did sifu!
At 49:18, voice crack.
"WHHAAATTT!"

It grates my ears every time he pronounces Trico that way.
25:50 that finger. LMAO :D
I just finished this game and i loved it. I can't wait to hear him get so confused and angry at puzzles.

That was one of the best TIHYDP moments.
watching all of this pain made me glad Phil doesn't have a real-life pet (at least from what I know) if he treated it the way he treats Trico...
Dog doesn't immediately understand your command? Bugged dog mechanics
Cat won't come to you? Bugged cat mechanics
Rabbit doesn't let you touch it? Bugged rabbit mechanics
This aged well LOL
"HE DIDN'T CATCH ME... Oh, he did catch me."
he finally did what he was supposed to do he stood there like a piece of shit
uhh yeah phil this is how we feel during ur goddamn twitch streams
49:15 How to ruin a special cutscene moment.

Im gonna be snorting today, nothing i could do khaman!
nO HE'S GOING BACK! OH MY GOD
The Entitlement is strong in this one.
when isn't this bum not under the weather.
I love how the game decided to be 60x more glitchy then it usually is just to screw with him xD karma if ever I’ve seen it
You know... I'm convinced DPS has no actual love or empathy for ANYTHING or ANYONE...if someone he knew died or taken Ill...it be a half-assed condolence and then immediately focus on churning out his videos.
I'm glad I didn't buy this game but its really entertaining to watch people play it.
It's no masterpiece, and the performance is fucking shit, but it's more a game than most AAA releases and the story pulled at my heartstrings something fierce.
How long did he take to finish it? Just ignore me if this is in the video.
I'd say about 10 hours.
I wouldn't call this more of a game than any other triple A at all...
JukaDominator I meant in that it isn't 75% cinematics and doesn't highlight where you need to go every 5 seconds because modern gamers are impatient retards.

There are plenty of games both modern and indie that have exciting gameplay and interesting stories. Also don't kid yourself into thinking that because people don't like this overhyped bore of a game that we all obsess over CoD. Funny enough though, CoD is more fun to play than this....
Did he really skipped the after credit cinematics? really?
the person who put this compilation together cut out most of the story spoilers I think because he did watch the scenes on stream.
You missed the part at the end where he deletes the game.
I've actually heard mainly bad things about this game from reviewers I "trust" (for lack of a better word). There's nothing wrong with liking it, of course, but there are issues that will turn plenty of people off.
One guy over at PreRec went so far as to call it the worst controlling game of this console generation
Shane Vincent If you like minimalist games like Uedas others or something like Another World, you'll probably like it. Rich and Jack are fine, but they're not exactly the most trustworthy reviewers.
Although it controls poorly in a few parts, that's true. Phil is just a fucking joke though.
What would make then untrustworthy?
And considering that my favorite single player game is Fallout New Vegas (where the devs went to great lengths to craft and simulate a "living, breathing" world) I would say I'm not a fan of minimalistic games
But that also depends on how you define "minimalistic." There gets a point where a game gets so minimalistic that it is not the game itself crafting the positive experience, but rather the player. And at that point no one is truly liking that game, for there really is no game to like.

They made a video about how Sonic was shit because they didn't know how to play it. Pretty poor review of Alien Isolation as well.
They're also down on anything that's too narrative and conflates a game with a movie. To be fair I usually hate those too, but they reflexively dismiss it.
The ur-example of minimalism in gaming that isn't revolting hipster shit is probably Another World. Also Ueda's own Shadow of the Colossus. Performance is shit, but there are really only 2 or 3 parts where the controls are a problem and it's nothing that you can't navigate with some patience.

You have to play it on Hard though.
I presume that by "Sonic" you mean classic Sonic the Hedgehog? Those games are unfortunately a victim of bad expectations set by the later games ("gotta run super fast" is usually a bad idea in the classic games).
I do mean classic Sonic, not the drooling furfag nightmare it's become. I essentially agree with you about Alien. Only used weapons on androids.

My god he's awful at this.
This seems like the worst game for a guy that complains about unreliable mechanics to play. Someone should bribe him/fund a lengthy play through of seaman.
one of the most frustrating games i have ever played.
This game looks insanely boring tbh
this game boring af the only thing that kept me awake is dsp horrible commentary
This game was so boring
