Thanks for posting. I believe Vilas is one of the forgotten “architects” of the way the game is played today. Consider the behind the baseline position, the all-court movement, and the massive topspin from both sides. They are all attributes we see in every tour player today. & BTW, Johnny Mac ain’t too bad either...a master of deception in both movement and power, a killer serve, perhaps the best touch volley of his generation, and a full understanding of the angles of the court and opponent. Also an equally great champion player in singles and doubles.
Vilas was impressive to watch , I had the chance to see him live front row in Morocco back in 1984 at the Trophy Hassan2 tournament in Rabat reaching the semi final against Higueras which took him to the Final vs Yannick Noah . Beautiful memories I was 14 years of age ...
Vilas did win the French Open and US Open in 1977, the only player to win more than one major. Vilas was quite good well into his 30s and won Australian Opens at the end of the 1970s.
But not adaptability - Borg - 6 French and 5 Wimbledon. and 3 in successive years - 1978, 1979 and 1980. ps the Netflix doc on Vilas is great and tries to restore how forgotten, not to say robbed he was and still is of his... you will have to see it for your self.
@@martynhanson The comment is precisely about his game, not about his achievements, although many would like to have the career that Willy had. PS: I personally think Vilas had a better playing style than Borg, Connors and McEnroe, among others, but in the end, the results rule.
@@fedecasares When Andy Murray was flying high I told my son about Vilas and how he has been forgotten to a large extent - you know in that era it was just Borg, Connors and then Mac of the all time greats. Then some recent tennis poll had Vilas at 14 and Murray at 18. Have you seen the Netflix doc?
Vilas won Roland Garros and the U.S. Open -- two legs of the Grand Slam -- and 14 other tournaments during the season. His magical season included a 57-match winning streak on clay, a record that stood for nearly three decades. Vilas played week in and week out, compiling an astonishing 145-15 won-loss record on the year. Yet he finished 1977 at number two in the rankings, the highest position he would ever attain. The top spot went to Jimmy Connors, who did not win a major championship that year (he lost to Vilas in the U.S. Open final). Jimbo won eight tournaments during the season, only half as many as Vilas, but he also played fewer matches.
The point Daniel was making was the Vilas SHOULD have been no. 1 in 1977, however, he is absolutely correct - Jimmy Connors finished the year number one on the atp computer.
Vilas was underrated volleyer . Such a physical specimen ., compared to most thin tennis players . Read an interview with Ion Tiriac. Quote “ in my book Vilas was the best player of all time for the talent that he had. Almost nothing. Limited. The dedication that he had every single day-at minimum training six hours-is something you have to respect. Vilas was that kind of player.” Vilas greatest gift was his work ethic. Not naturally Gifted like McEnroe. McEnroe amazed me how he dominated so long on senior tour. Respect for both Mac and Willie
Que raro es ver jugar a Vilas llendose a la red a definir tantas veces pero a Mc Enroe le jugaba asi muchas veces ,hermoso el swing de saque de Mc Enroe (mi idolo)
bjorn borg basically tortured vilas...borg was much fleeter afoot, and borg was way tougher mentally..vilas was too sensitive and fragile and lacked the power to hurt borg...game over..their matches put you to sleep
Borg said the biggest difference between him and Guillermo was just a slight difference in speed. He felt him , Connor’s , mac , we’re a slight step faster then the way muscular Vilas. Borg said he felt he could always outlast Vilas . I agree with you. Guillermo was very competitive with Connors , and Mac , but not Borg. He just didn’t match up well. His greatest win Over Bjorn was probably in the 74 masters. He got in willies head too.

By far Vilas should ve been N1 in 1977.
Vilas was number 1....of course

@@jerryl9823 tenes razón chabon....altos datos tiraste loge
Yes he won what 15 tournaments the French Open and US Open thrashed Connors 60 in the final set was robbed of No 1
But for some reason, in my opinion at any rate Vilas was far better to watch than Borg ever was, much more fluidity and variety in his game I felt!

How can number 2 be this year if I win everything and a Jimmy Connors number 1? where in your head ?, that year was Vilas the number 1
He was just number 2.
I repeat in your head, that year Vilas was number one

Quel beau jeu quel touché de balle magnifique, ca change des frappeurs body buldés d’aujourd’hui.

Vilas....was Fantastic
i can’t believe how much topspin he generates with a wooden rq

So incredible!!
Vilas was incredible in 77
Amazing how McEnroe just toyed around with his opponents in his prime years.
no es en el ´80?? Esta con la Head Vilas. En el ´81 usaba Slazenger
Grande guillermo !!!
love the vilas fh!
it's weird to see McEnroe not serving & volleying... normally he always came in behind his first serve even on clay.
Quiero ver el partido COMPLETO. :(

I'm guessing Vilas won this one..

Lentísimo, sin tiros ganadores, con saques a poca velocidad....malisimo ,esos dos no aguantan 1 set con los actuales jugadores ..
