  • My name is Derek and I am a Norse Pagan. In the past 3.5 years of walking this path I have learned from a lot of people and have had some wonderful experiences and connected to amazing communities of fellow folk. However alongside that has been a darker side to the faith that we cant simply ignore.
    In this video I will express my views of walking this path and the concerns many in our community have along with why its important to always be checking ourselves so that we don't fall back into the practices and attitudes that many of us have worked so hard to leave behind.

    Thank you so much for making this video. Everything you said...I agree 100%. In the Havamal, the first four stanzas speak of how to treat strangers...give them clothes, give them food, give them water, listen to them and place them near the fire...but...it also says in the first stanza "At every doorway before you enter, you should look around, you should take a good look around-for you never know where your enemies might be seated within." Listen carefully to those who gather in the name of the gods because not everyone's intention is good, and to some people only power over others matter. Leadership is always important with a group to ensure things go smoothly, but ANYONE who demands obedience without question is a viper.

    "Come from all different backgrounds and Walks of life" that's right, and Odin tests how others are treated. If we work with Odin, as Pagan, Norse Pagan, or otherwise he tests us as The Wonderer. Odin tests our hospitality and treatment of people, especially strangers.

    I'm part of the lgbtq community also. No matter what our ancestors did or didn't do we should do better today. It's not the religions, it's us who needs to change.
    My biggest issue has been some accusing me of being some racist, crazy, end of the world type because I do survivalist and guns and self defense. I'm literally a veteran with PTSD who has healed immensely on this path and this group was going around calling me crazy based off of a lie someone told just because they had some unknown to me issue with me. Not all communities are as inclusive as they make themselves out to be.

Hitler dishonored some of our ruins and symbols and dishonored the ancestors. They where all races within Viking raids. I think this is splitting hairs and giving liberals something to cry about. If your a honorable human being then you can be apart of our religion. Christians have been trying to get rid of the religion because they don’t want us as a people united. Because we will have power. Think about if you look back at the past Charlemagne. Forced our people to accept Christianity at the end of a sword. If you was pagan back then you couldn’t trade, sell, buy or anything . I’m proud to be Norse pagan and proud of my people. And they accept native Americans religion and yet not ours.

    I don't think being big traders or anything automatically means the Norse peoples were not racist or anything. At least, less racist and xenophobic than any other group of people at the time.
    Muslims were also big traders, even though their doctrine teaches that infidels (anyone who isn't a follower of an Abrahamic faith) must be put to the sword.
    Certainly there would be individuals who were more open-minded, but you're making a claim about an entire culture. One I'm not sure you have the evidence to back up.
    I do agree, however, that is no evidence, at least as far as I know, for any support of white nationalist/supremacist ideals in Norse culture or religion. Just the general racism and xenophobia of the people of that time.

    • @The_bigbo55
      @The_bigbo55  3 года назад +5

      Actually I would recommend that you do a bit more research. According to the Quran, all faiths are considered tolerable, but ESPECIALLY abrahamic faiths,, as long as they do not impede on their ability to worship and practice their own religion. Only extremists have taken the Muslim faith to the point that we see it today, which is the result of hundreds of years of oppression by Christendom. But also keep in mind that the Christian faith has ALWAYS believed that those who are not specifically Christian deserve to and will be murdered by the Christian God and Christendom has been responsible for much more oppression, hatred, strife, and death than any other faith on the planet. Even including the Muslim faith, I cant think of another faith outside of Christianity responsible for starting over a millenia worth of religious wars with so many different cultures spanning the entire globe.
      In regards to the Norse culture, as they followed the principles of hospitality, they welcomed all into their culture. In fact, many wouldn't even refuse a stranger at their door as hospitality was considered paramount as you dont know whether it was one of the gods at your threshold (Grimnismal). The archeological, historical, and cultural evidence is out there and available to support my claims. Also, much like the Muslim faith, intolerance became more prevalent when christendom began forced conversions and claiming lands that belonged to norse cultures as their own. Being polyhtiestic, the norse cultures were very accepting of other gods which is why its also been shown that many historically added the Christian god into the gods they venerate. It was until the followers of the Christian God threatened their way of life and culture that much of the aggression started. Also, keep in mind that many of the accounts of the norse cultures that were penned by Christians have a blatant bias that has been proven inaccurate with archeology and accounts of the culture from other cultures that were coexisting.
      Lastly, your argument is rife with logical fallacy, from burden of proof to no true Scotsman and Texas sharpshooter. The archeological evidence, accounts from other cultures at the time, and the importance of tolerance and hospitality across the culture point towards a very open, hospitable, welcoming, and tolerant culture. Basically, we'll agree to disagree based on my research and evidence available.

      @@The_bigbo55 Hi, I'm an ex-muslim and I wanted to share my thoughts regarding what you say about Islam.
      In the Encyclopedia of Wars by by Charles Phillips and Alan Axelrod only 7% of wars are due to religion, and if you remove the 66 wars waged in the name of Islam, it cuts the number down to approx 3%. Islam is responsible for 4% of the wars waged in the name of religion, and all the other religions combined are responsible for the other 3%.
      The Arab Muslim slave trade was as brutal and widespread as the transatlantic slave trade, sexual slavery was common. In the Quran and Hadith, Muhammad openly and explicitly endorsed slavery and sexual slavery (I can show you the Hadith). Muhammad also openly tortured a tribe to death, and ordered the assassination of a poet who made a mocking poem about him. Their is also the death penalty for leaving the religion, blasphemy, homosexuality and apostasy, ordered by Muhammad.

      @The_bigbo55  Год назад

      @@nopillpill you need to remember that tho Muslim cultures were involved in religious wars, that does not mean they started them. Many if the wars Muslim cultures and kingdoms were involved in that are well recorded were started by Europeans, i.e. the crusades and many of the wars that came from that era.
      That being said, I have a copy of the Quran and I've read it. It specifically states that Jews and Christian's are to be considered in a manner of speaking "righteous" and to only make war on them if they are the aggressors.

      @@nopillpill Al's, slavery was extremely common in antiquity, including sexual slavery. The horse were notorious for keeping captured enemies as slaves or thralls, kemetic, semitic/akkadian, hellenic, and other cultures had a long history of slavery, sexual slavery, and brutality. Death as a punishment for apostasy and many if those other things was also practiced by many cultures, including the Europeans even past the middle ages. And remember that the Israelites of antiquity savagely murdered men, women, children, and animals in their conquest of what they called "the promised land". The mongol hoards were known for their brutality in the east. Simply put, antiquity was universally brutal and the accounts that single out Islam as a major source of it is biased and can be historically refuted.

      @@The_bigbo55 With all due respect, and I apologize if my tone comes across as aggressive;
      Just because the Quran says something, that doesn't mean that's what the muslims did. You seem to be (understandably, and credibly) critical of Christians atrocities but you seem to be very apologetic towards muslim's atrocities.
      Muhammad, in his hadith and the biographies of his life, carried out raids on caravans, and literally tortured a tribe to death by plucking out their eyes and watching them dehydrate to death while they cried out for water.
      Have you read about the slavery and sexual slavery literally directly endorsed by Muhammad?
      Like I said, the Arab Muslim slave trade was as barbaric and widespread as the transatlantic slave trade, but many people are unaware of his scope and horror. Muslim majority nations were the last nations on the planet to outlaw slavery in the 20th and 21st century. Let alone the death penalty for homosexuality, apostasy (being an apostate, I would be executed), blasphemy and homosexuality. Those 'crimes' are still punished to this day in muslim majority nations. Christian nations have largely evolved to become egalitarian, Muslim majority nations have not.
      You said in the video you were part of LGBT, where do you think you would be better treated in this day and age. In a Muslim majority nation in the middle east or Africa, or in any Christian nation in the west. (I'm black and non-heterosexual, just in case you think I'm a 'white supremacist' or something for mentioning the west.)

      Article 127 yes. I think the spirit of the declaration was good and well meaning. What I think is wrong is belittling those who don't want to take a codified approach to practicing their faith, especially since historically such things can and often do lead to an organized system of religion rife with dogma and exclusion over minor differences in opinion. Basically, we all know the bigots and racists exist, and while reclaiming our heritage and sacred symbols and faith is important, we need to avoid placing judgment on others simply because they may not want to get involved in the larger political aspect of the faith and worry about making sure that they themselves are being a good person. It's not so cut and dry as "I approve of declaration 127" or "I don't approve of declaration 127".

If you feel that you need to use my path to justify such hatred then I highly recommend that you steer clear of anyone who walks this path as our ancestors did because we will not stand having our names nor our ancestors sullied by such attitudes and perceptions.
