I do not have any European ancestry as far as I know but coming from a family who left a country because of majority not respecting others beliefs. I have family who live in Spain and eventually some of them emigrated to Belgium with that said I respect all cultures and customs and beliefs. Your Channel speaks to many keep up the great work my friend.
Paganism is a very personal experience. You’ll seldom find someone trying to convert you to the old ways. It’s something that you discover on your own that is influenced by the way you view the world around you.
My German mother used to tell me about those Norse and German myths. They were always about celebrating the beauty of nature and the returning of the sun to bring plenty to all.

I grew up as a Catholic, but have always been fascinated and drawn to Paganism my whole life and I start to deconstruct my Catholic Faith and started to do research on Celtic/Nordic Paganism and I feel so much more at peace within Pagan traditions.
Beyond that, people have a need to do so. One of the important things I note is that culture requires a certain amount of separation, or it disappears. Not isolationism... just some space preserved/left alone, and a culture is preserved. Globalism is the smashing of separation, and will not serve us well. People need to remember the paths their family came through.
No one has any rights. Not even to breathe or beat your heart. Your creator holds that right and exercises it through His loving grace that he supplies the very condition, allowing you another breath and heartbeat. Without it, you are toast. I am Native American Onondaga (mother side)and also a descendent of the Mayan in Mexico (father). My spiritual journey combined them both over time and have completed me as a person. Even though the stone circles are not of my heritage I know there is such a powerful energy in those places that is very real. We are blessed to walk in the places of our Ancestors and marvel and the wisdom they left us. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful place that holds a strong place in your heart ❤
I'm in England and I'm surrounded by the same stone structures, the same stone structures that the system tried to eradicate in the Americas. The same thread runs through all our cultures.

Exactly. If you take a closer look to the old religions you can see there are similiarities to each other. One exampled being the winged celestial horse - Tulpar (Turkic Mythology), Pegasus (Greek Mythology), Devadatta (Hindu mythology) Other gods and goddesses representing various nature deities, war gods... the list goes on and on. These old Pagan beliefs are similiar because We ALL worshipped the nature and tried to understand and give a meaning to the worldly events.
When I was five years old my mother took me to see The Vikings at the theatre. It deeply affected me. At around 17 years -old I began to lean strongly toward Paganism and have been a Pagan my entire life. I will soon be 69 years-old. When my mother was 90 she mentioned her mother's family did not care for her father who was born in Kiev. She said they called him a "Rus." She had no idea what that meant. After she passed I was in a bookstore and bought a huge book on Viking history. I was sitting in my mountain cabin having a Martini and literally spit it across the room when I got to the section on the Kievan Rus. Then I realized my paternal Grandfather also had Viking blood, having come from Riga. What "silent knowledge" in my blood awakened a five year-old boy cannot be ignored.

He joked it was from the Vikings holding axes😄 idk, I believe it's the creases in your palms. My ancestors came mostly from Scotland & England & a couple from Germany. I do have N European in my DNA though.

My grandmother was Norwegian, and she recently passed away. I remember that she often talked about wanting to explore her heritage, but life always got in the way. Since she passed I've been feeling the need to do something along those lines, but I haven't really known where to start. Thank you for making this video. I think I know now.

The most cringe thing in the world is Americans appropriating cultures so they can portray themselves as special. It is akin to live action roleplaying. It has become a huge American stereotype.

They have returned to nature and the truth about their origins. More and more people are talking about it. It is said that once upon a time, only one population of the same culture lived in Europe. Well said my friend! I see it happening here in the US as well, people are returning to their roots and it's amazing to see. I've been following Norse Paganism very closely since I was 13, but I got to have my amazing grandparents in my life until just a few years ago. My mothers parents were Danish & Swedish, my fathers parents were German & Finnish, so I was blessed to grow up hearing about where and how they grew up, and even stories of the Gods.
Dutch pagan with Celtic, Germanic and Viking ancestry here and proud of it. I started to walk in my ancestor's footsteps again, am celebrating the 8 festivals of the sacred Earth Year again and I feel so connected! It is who I truly am. Also I am making people around me aware of the fact that we are the indigenous people of Northern Europe with our own spirituality and that our ancestors went through similar horrors as other indigenous peoples of the world.

I have no doubts my Northern European and Scot ancestors were pagans, but I don’t fault that I am a Christian today and my North American roots practiced Christianity for at least 300 years, probably a lot longer than that although it’s hard to trace anything before 1500 in many lines. I agree with you that Christianity was forced on a lot of peoples around the globe and certainly didn’t bring the converts to true faith. That a fair number of true Christian missionaries holding true to Christ’s words were martyred over the centuries simply trying to preach the Gospel is also true. I hold that people can certainly believe what they want, but I’m firm on John 14.6. Anyways I do appreciate your videos and your views and wish I could manage to spend more time out in the wilds.

The values, the way of thinking the knowledge etc you have, were not present in my family and the society i grew up in and that always left me a kind of hopelessnes about the future and a pneumatic isolation. I came across your channel recently and I'm so grateful, everything you put out there helps and gives me hope and courage for tommorow, seeing a kind of father figure that was absent all these years. Keep uploading, you are incredible.
I like what you said at the end, "I feel confident because I have strong roots." I view paganism as the celebration of my eternal family. I truly view myself as a daughter of the All Father, Wotan. And that has given me such a secure foundation to explore the world in an honest and connected way.

Great video! Being born in the U.S., I didn't have the cultural past of my ancestors around me as you do. When Asatru found me, a few years shy of 30 years ago, I was an 18 year old kid living in Colorado. It definitely wasn't hard to find that spiritual connection with the Norse Gods within the Rocky Mountains. Once I found it, it didn't really matter where I lived as I brought it with me. You comment about Native Americans really rang true with me too. The sense of Tribe and Culture that they have really seems to reflect what our Pagan ancestors' lives were like on the other side of the world.

I left Christianity decades ago, and am a Zen Buddhist now. Your descriptions of Nature are similar to want many Zens belief, in terms of what is called the Tao. I think many people are realizing that these gods we have created are symbols, and they are all highly symbolic of what we should have been revering all along - Nature. We did not come into the Earth, we came out of it, and the elements that we're made of came from the stars. I applaud you and the message in this video!, and you have me thinking about my heritage. I reconnected with my heritage, my ancestors, and my ancient past a long time ago and wish anyone else a pleasant journey and hope you find your way back to your home. Everyone has freedom of thought, and each heart knows best where it belongs, but I do believe we should honour and nurture our native heritage and diversity in Europe. I know we are still few, but it warms my heart to see those who share their strength and serenity, to know that as long as the embers burn it will never die.
Christianity being judged by very non-christian actions, plus even some things from over more than 100 generations ago, and what happened is not the instructions in the bible! And what about what the pagans did, the vikings did, invading and plundering and killing and stealing and axing anyone in their way, and institutionalized human sacrifices in bogs. I'm a pagan from Alaska, and I had the wonderful opportunity to spend two weeks driving through Sweden and Norway. So many wonderful ancient sites did I get to see. I went to Uppsala, and I bought a wrought iron Mjolnir necklace, that I wear everyday. It's been about 9 years now. I spent my first night in Malmo. I walked around perfectly safe, and enjoyed the beautiful town. The news I read these days about Malmo makes me very sad.

That part about taking pride in your culture is really great and something I strongly agree with. _Every single_ country that was involved to any notable degree in WWII has lost most or all pride and nationalism. Certain people these days talk a lot about 'Diversity' but the diversity the advocate for destroys true diversity. If you have a rainbow of different paints, and you throw them all in a bucket and mix them together, they all disappear into one boring, mucky brown. True diversity, beautiful diversity, is born of division and isolation. I want the world to once again be filled with divided, isolated, nationalistic countries. Unique cultures, languages, etc. I hate technology and that plays a part in this, but I'll cut it off there.
I am of Scandinavian - Germanic decent. The rest of me is of indigenous American lineage. When I see stone circles and earthen mounds, I too am at a loss for words. It's hard to fathom the people that came before us and what they endured to get us to where we are now. I'm ever grateful to my past kin.
Many people say that if you are different religion, and not one of the three Abrahamic Religions…(Jewish, Christian, Islam)…..then you are pagan. So ancient Norse religion, Ancient Greek religion, Celtic, Wicca, Buddhism, ancient Roman religion, Hinduism, ancient American native religions, ancient Egyptian, native African etc….. are all Pagan. Your videos inspired me last year to get out into Nature and I spent two wonderful holidays in the Highlands, where I found stone circles very similar to these in both Aviemore and Strathpeffer. What strikes me about this video is the excitement in your eyes when talking about Paganism, and once again it is inspiring to hear you talk about the heritage behind these structures. I agree that they must be preserved, and their histories told. Great content, and love the channel.

I live in Kyoto, Japan, and I see millions of tourists from everywhere visiting are fascinated to visit Shinto shrines which are pagan. Japan was one of the few countries which could avoid Christianity by closing the country off from all foreigners for a couple of hundred years. Paganism is making a general return to the earth. For example, Japanese anime contain worlds (sometimes disguised) of pagan, animistic and magical beliefs based on nature goddesses and gods. The return of paganism in Europe fits in with this global trend. I do research on paganism in popular culture and I found that the movie Star Wars in 1977 signals the return of the Divine Feminine. I think nature spirituality is important. I found that Shakespeare was a pagan too. And in his work he predicts the return of paganism and witchcraft. (Witchcraft means paganism but no clerics, no large scale organized religion. Large-scale organized religion with clerics, no matter pagan or not, could be a problem because clerics make connections to politicians). I am much more comfortable without groups and clerics. Thank you for this video, I think it's so important to explore this topic because our natural world is our only home.
I grew up in a Christian family yet I remember never really feeling as though I fit in or felt a connection with the faith. I'd spent most of my time outdoors playing, exploring, or just listening to the different sounds around me and it always felt like something was calling me. Of course as I reached my teens I started analyzing Christianity in a more literal sense and noticing just the peculiarity of the stories within the bible.. people turned into pillars, a great flood, the sea splitting.. I drifted away from it even more and basically cut all ties with it once I brought my questions to the various Christians I attended school with as well as my family.. and was met with both ridicule and blind faith. So I turned to Atheism which I felt some comfort in for a time, being free of religious ties and focusing on the world we live in set my mind and heart at ease, until about five or so years ago anyway when I began feeling lost again. To my surprise my dad had got a gift in the form of one of the family tree trackers I can't remember which one at the moment and while we knew his family had members from Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and Germany.. the tests concluded that my dad's family tree leads back to the Scandinavian countries and spread from there. Hearing this I began doing my own research into the cultures of Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Happy to say it lead me here to this RUclips channel and to Norse Paganism.. it's almost like my appreciation of nature and those that have come and gone before us has increased drastically. I guess this is just some long convoluted way for me to say that I'm finally happy and feel like I belong somewhere.. that I'm part of something worth being a part of and that your words reinforce this feeling. I’m an American, I’m of danish, English, German and Scottish blood. Love my Viking heritage. My great grandfather immigrated to America from Denmark. Knowing where we came from helps us understand who we are. Great video.

I was raised as a Christian in the United States, where I still reside, but had opened my mind about four years ago and had an open discussion with a norse pagan. We talked for eight hours about his beliefs and mine. Definitely an eye opener! I am still just as open and willing to learn about those traditions because the roots I was raised with were shaky at best.
So well summed up Bjorn. Paganism to me is the celebration of life and the seasons of all things. It does not look to conquer but to understand! To live with and celebrate nature!

Thanks for this Bjørn. It's spreading in the states as well. It feels like a reawakening to our past. I'm new to Norse Paganism but started my journey 3 or 4 months ago after a long hiatus from religion and belief all together. It's made me feel grounded and connected in a lot of ways.
I think videos and talks like this are your best ones. Having a sacred site to connect with is really important, especially these days. My connection to Asatru was forged at the Grand Canyon in Arizona 1996, doing a Rune layout on some huge flat rocks over looking the canyon was amazing, the whole time two ravens were there making themselves known constantly, this was where an almost uncanny relationship was formed with the old gods and the raven’s especially, that continues to this day. Also respect the Native American tribal ways and culture, that’s the common thread tribal and earth based. Thanks to Bjorn for excellent videos.
With all the craziness in the news, it's better to get out in nature and watch the trees in the wind. See how the birds sing, where moss covers our past. We can reach out and touch it, connect, if we choose to.

Question for ya. Do you think that if European pegans came to the Americas instead of Christians, things would have played out differently? Do you think it would have been violent? Or at least less violent. In a sense you're right. We are all connected. Many pegans believed in multiple Gods so would that have been easier for people to intergrate and get along?

My personal path has been a mixer of Norse and Celtic with a bit of other shamanic practices. But as soon as you say pagan you have to immediately justify your beliefs. Because people want to tell you what you believe. But it nice to see that more people are finding the path. Blessed be and merry meet.

My fathers family were Pictish/Scots & Irish (Clan DalRiata). My moms family were Welsh. I am American with Catholic & English Church background. My understanding is that the Irish and Scots were pagans , revering the Norse gods. I have been able to visit Newgrange and Stonehenge in the past & had the feeling that I had been there before, even though it was my first time ever visiting. Maybe when the Great Architect calls me home I’ll find out.
The Irish were Christianised well over a thousand years ago but before that they had their own gods. The Norse gods were brought by Viking invaders who ravaged and enslaved the Irish.

I've got Northern Irish blood, hence Pictish. The Picts moved down from Scotland to N Ireland.The Irish had their own gods but had some Norse influence too. Later, some Scotti (Gallowglass) moved to Northern Ireland, bringing SOME of their Pictish blood with them to Ulster. Then further, the plantations brought lowlander Scots to northern Ireland. My mother is a McNeill. She made me nearly half Scottish.

I truly believe that Paganism chose me as a child. A child of nature, and spiritual places which I found in my own exploration of woodland and forests, sometimes on a pony, then a horse. Then, in reading about Paganism in my teens everything clicked into place and I just knew what it all meant. I can remember the time I walked into woodland and found a specific circle of silver birch trees amid everything else. It took my breath away and I just knew from that moment exactly who I was. I must have been about 11 I suppose, maybe a bit younger but I just continued to discover something special in everything that surrounded me. As an only child without a friendship base it was easy, and I'm still the same decades later. You can not be alone when surrounded by that special bond.
Sound like we had similar journey to find paganism. I spent a lot of time in the woods as a kid. And as a teen we were camping and partying in those woods lol. And then I became a hunter. Andi just have always had a strong connection with mother nature. And I would not trade that for any thing.
I am a 60 year old Pagan, living in the UK and for me it is about living connected to the Earth and the seasonal changes, while treading lightly on the Earth and giving thanks for all that Mother Earth provides. Thank you for the great videos, especially this one.

Fascinating and insightful. I particularly liked the bit where you said 'We have always been here' regarding the old ways. In spite of more than 1000 years under the power of the cross, in Anglo-Saxon culture the old gods are still remembered amongst the very days of the week with; Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
I respect your view, but in my case, as a Portuguese, I just can't really find positivity in my ancestor's (the Callaeci mainly but it also includes other Iberic people, Berbers, Romans and Suebis) pagan practices, wich included human sacrifice and divination in animal entrails. I like the aesthetics of it (the stone circles like the Cromeleque dos Almendres, the dolmens like the Anta do Mezio, and the amazing Celtic Carnivals in Lazarim, Podence, or Mogadouro) but I just don't believe what they believed in, and I don't like their practices. Christianity is clearly declining, but I think the two big players taking its place are atheism and Islam, not paganism, and the paganism we see is very superficial, it only consists of tattoos, jewels, or merchandises. That's not paganism, that's just fantasy influenced by video games and Hollywood.

Completely agree. I'm sure when the vikings raided Paris they sacrificed a couple of hundred french soldiers to Odin... These gods were worshipped in a time when the world was very different but this is what they demanded; sacrifice in blood. I've seen no neopagans even sacrifice a living animal to "the gods" (although some may do). I agree that the reverence of nature is paramount, no matter what your faith is (as Bjorn is alluding to) but most modern pagans are in it for the fashion and the image, essentially role playing.
Never truer words said. Neopaganism is so romanticised, if any of them could travel back in time and saw how pagans lived and worshipped they’d probably have a coronary. Christianity however, underpins our 2000 year old civilisation. Religion is meant to be “strict” for a reason, because without these rules, society will unravel.

John Lamb Lash’s book “Not In His Image”, (the 15 year anniversary edition) is incredible & although I was convinced by reading the first edition, the new and revised edition totally blew my mind & has strengthened my Pagan Spirit & knowing of the gods, my feeling of strength, peace of mind & love for my ancestral lineages. His works are a must-read for all European racial groups.

I do not have any European ancestry as far as I know but coming from a family who left a country because of majority not respecting others beliefs. Everybody has the absolute right to determine their own spiritual path. Kudos for having the guts to tell us about yours.
Beyond that, people have a need to do so. One of the important things I note is that culture requires a certain amount of separation, or it disappears. Not isolationism... just some space preserved/left alone, and a culture is preserved. Globalism is the smashing of separation, and will not serve us well. People need to remember the paths their family came through.

Exactly. If you take a closer look to the old religions you can see there are similiarities to each other.
One exampled being the winged celestial horse - Tulpar (Turkic Mythology), Pegasus (Greek Mythology), Devadatta (Hindu mythology)
Other gods and goddesses representing various nature deities, war gods... the list goes on and on.
These old Pagan beliefs are similiar because We ALL worshipped the nature and tried to understand and give a meaning to the worldly events.
When I was five years old my mother took me to see The Vikings at the theatre. It deeply affected me. At around 17 years -old I began to lean strongly toward Paganism and have been a Pagan my entire life. I will soon be 69 years-old. When my mother was 90 she mentioned her mother's family did not care for her father who was born in Kiev. She said they called him a "Rus." She had no idea what that meant. After she passed I was in a bookstore and bought a huge book on Viking history. I was sitting in my mountain cabin having a Martini and literally spit it across the room when I got to the section on the Kievan Rus. Then I realized my paternal Grandfather also had Viking blood, having come from Riga. What "silent knowledge" in my blood awakened a five year-old boy cannot be ignored.

My grandmother was Norwegian, and she recently passed away. I remember that she often talked about wanting to explore her heritage, but life always got in the way. Since she passed I've been feeling the need to do something along those lines, but I haven't really known where to start. Thank you for making this video. I think I know now.

Well said my friend! I see it happening here in the US as well, people are returning to their roots and it's amazing to see. I've been following Norse Paganism very closely since I was 13, but I got to have my amazing grandparents in my life until just a few years ago. My mothers parents were Danish & Swedish, my fathers parents were German & Finnish, so I was blessed to grow up hearing about where and how they grew up, and even stories of the Gods.

Dutch pagan with Celtic, Germanic and Viking ancestry here and proud of it. I started to walk in my ancestor's footsteps again, am celebrating the 8 festivals of the sacred Earth Year again and I feel so connected! It is who I truly am. Also I am making people around me aware of the fact that we are the indigenous people of Northern Europe with our own spirituality and that our ancestors went through similar horrors as other indigenous peoples of the world.

I have no doubts my Northern European and Scot ancestors were pagans, but I don’t fault that I am a Christian today and my North American roots practiced Christianity for at least 300 years, probably a lot longer than that although it’s hard to trace anything before 1500 in many lines. I agree with you that Christianity was forced on a lot of peoples around the globe and certainly didn’t bring the converts to true faith. That a fair number of true Christian missionaries holding true to Christ’s words were martyred over the centuries simply trying to preach the Gospel is also true. I hold that people can certainly believe what they want, but I’m firm on John 14.6. Anyways I do appreciate your videos and your views and wish I could manage to spend more time out in the wilds.

The values, the way of thinking the knowledge etc you have, were not present in my family and the society i grew up in and that always left me a kind of hopelessnes about the future and a pneumatic isolation. I came across your channel recently and I'm so grateful, everything you put out there helps and gives me hope and courage for tommorow, seeing a kind of father figure that was absent all these years. Great video! Being born in the U.S., I didn't have the cultural past of my ancestors around me as you do. When Asatru found me, a few years shy of 30 years ago, I was an 18 year old kid living in Colorado. It definitely wasn't hard to find that spiritual connection with the Norse Gods within the Rocky Mountains. Once I found it, it didn't really matter where I lived as I brought it with me. You comment about Native Americans really rang true with me too. The sense of Tribe and Culture that they have really seems to reflect what our Pagan ancestors' lives were like on the other side of the world.

I think many people are realizing that these gods we have created are symbols, and they are all highly symbolic of what we should have been revering all along - Nature. I reconnected with my heritage, my ancestors, and my ancient past a long time ago and wish anyone else a pleasant journey and hope you find your way back to your home. Everyone has freedom of thought, and each heart knows best where it belongs, but I do believe we should honour and nurture our native heritage and diversity in Europe. I know we are still few, but it warms my heart to see those who share their strength and serenity, to know that as long as the embers burn it will never die.

I'm a pagan from Alaska, and I had the wonderful opportunity to spend two weeks driving through Sweden and Norway. So many wonderful ancient sites did I get to see. I went to Uppsala, and I bought a wrought iron Mjolnir necklace, that I wear everyday. It's been about 9 years now. I spent my first night in Malmo. I walked around perfectly safe, and enjoyed the beautiful town. The news I read these days about Malmo makes me very sad.

Your videos inspired me last year to get out into Nature and I spent two wonderful holidays in the Highlands, where I found stone circles very similar to these in both Aviemore and Strathpeffer. What strikes me about this video is the excitement in your eyes when talking about Paganism, and once again it is inspiring to hear you talk about the heritage behind these structures. I agree that they must be preserved, and their histories told.

I live in Kyoto, Japan, and I see millions of tourists from everywhere visiting are fascinated to visit Shinto shrines which are pagan. Japan was one of the few countries which could avoid Christianity by closing the country off from all foreigners for a couple of hundred years. Paganism is making a general return to the earth. For example, Japanese anime contain worlds (sometimes disguised) of pagan, animistic and magical beliefs based on nature goddesses and gods. The return of paganism in Europe fits in with this global trend.
I do research on paganism in popular culture and I found that the movie Star Wars in 1977 signals the return of the Divine Feminine. I think nature spirituality is important. I found that Shakespeare was a pagan too. And in his work he predicts the return of paganism and witchcraft. (Witchcraft means paganism but no clerics, no large scale organized religion. Large-scale organized religion with clerics, no matter pagan or not, could be a problem because clerics make connections to politicians). I am much more comfortable without groups and clerics.

I grew up in a Christian family yet I remember never really feeling as though I fit in or felt a connection with the faith. I'd spent most of my time outdoors playing, exploring, or just listening to the different sounds around me and it always felt like something was calling me.
Of course as I reached my teens I started analyzing Christianity in a more literal sense and noticing just the peculiarity of the stories within the bible.. people turned into pillars, a great flood, the sea splitting.. I drifted away from it even more and basically cut all ties with it once I brought my questions to the various Christians I attended school with as well as my family.. and was met with both ridicule and blind faith.
So I turned to Atheism which I felt some comfort in for a time, being free of religious ties and focusing on the world we live in set my mind and heart at ease, until about five or so years ago anyway when I began feeling lost again.
To my surprise my dad had got a gift in the form of one of the family tree trackers I can't remember which one at the moment and while we knew his family had members from Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and Germany.. the tests concluded that my dad's family tree leads back to the Scandinavian countries and spread from there. Hearing this I began doing my own research into the cultures of Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Happy to say it lead me here to this RUclips channel and to Norse Paganism.. it's almost like my appreciation of nature and those that have come and gone before us has increased drastically.
I guess this is just some long convoluted way for me to say that I'm finally happy and feel like I belong somewhere.. that I'm part of something worth being a part of and that your words reinforce this feeling. Thank you Bjorn

I was raised as a Christian in the United States, where I still reside, but had opened my mind about four years ago and had an open discussion with a norse pagan. We talked for eight hours about his beliefs and mine. Definitely an eye opener! I am still just as open and willing to learn about those traditions because the roots I was raised with were shaky at best.

Thanks for this Bjørn. It's spreading in the states as well. It feels like a reawakening to our past. I'm new to Norse Paganism but started my journey 3 or 4 months ago after a long hiatus from religion and belief all together. It's made me feel grounded and connected in a lot of ways.

Having a sacred site to connect with is really important, especially these days.
My connection to Asatru was forged at the Grand Canyon in Arizona 1996, doing a Rune layout on some huge flat rocks over looking the canyon was amazing, the whole time two ravens were there making themselves known constantly, this was where an almost uncanny relationship was formed with the old gods and the raven’s especially, that continues to this day.
Also respect the Native American tribal ways and culture, that’s the common thread tribal and earth based.

My personal path has been a mixer of Norse and Celtic with a bit of other shamanic practices. But as soon as you say pagan you have to immediately justify your beliefs. My fathers family were Pictish/Scots & Irish (Clan DalRiata). My moms family were Welsh. I am American with Catholic & English Church background. My understanding is that the Irish and Scots were pagans , revering the Norse gods. I have been able to visit Newgrange and Stonehenge in the past & had the feeling that I had been there before, even though it was my first time ever visiting. Maybe when the Great Architect calls me home I’ll find out.
The Irish were Christianised well over a thousand years ago but before that they had their own gods. The Norse gods were brought by Viking invaders who ravaged and enslaved the Irish.

I've got Northern Irish blood, hence Pictish. The Picts moved down from Scotland to N Ireland.The Irish had their own gods but had some Norse influence too. My Grandad was a Conaghan of the Connaught area/Clan.

Later, some Scotti (Gallowglass) moved to Northern Ireland, bringing SOME of their Pictish blood with them to Ulster. Then further, the plantations brought lowlander Scots to northern Ireland.
My mother is a McNeill. She made me nearly half Scottish.

I truly believe that Paganism chose me as a child. A child of nature, and spiritual places which I found in my own exploration of woodland and forests, sometimes on a pony, then a horse. Then, in reading about Paganism in my teens everything clicked into place and I just knew what it all meant. I can remember the time I walked into woodland and found a specific circle of silver birch trees amid everything else. It took my breath away and I just knew from that moment exactly who I was. I must have been about 11 I suppose, maybe a bit younger but I just continued to discover something special in everything that surrounded me. As an only child without a friendship base it was easy, and I'm still the same decades later. You can not be alone when surrounded by that special bond.

Sound like we had similar journey to find paganism. I spent a lot of time in the woods as a kid. And as a teen we were camping and partying in those woods lol. And then I became a hunter. Andi just have always had a strong connection with mother nature. And I would not trade that for any thing.

Fascinating and insightful. I particularly liked the bit where you said 'We have always been here' regarding the old ways.
In spite of more than 1000 years under the power of the cross, in Anglo-Saxon culture the old gods are still remembered amongst the very days of the week with; Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
I respect your view, but in my case, as a Portuguese, I just can't really find positivity in my ancestor's (the Callaeci mainly but it also includes other Iberic people, Berbers, Romans and Suebis) pagan practices, wich included human sacrifice and divination in animal entrails.
I like the aesthetics of it (the stone circles like the Cromeleque dos Almendres, the dolmens like the Anta do Mezio, and the amazing Celtic Carnivals in Lazarim, Podence, or Mogadouro) but I just don't believe what they believed in, and I don't like their practices.
Christianity is clearly declining, but I think the two big players taking its place are atheism and Islam, not paganism, and the paganism we see is very superficial, it only consists of tattoos, jewels, or merchandises. That's not paganism, that's just fantasy influenced by video games and Hollywood.

Completely agree. I'm sure when the vikings raided Paris they sacrificed a couple of hundred french soldiers to Odin... These gods were worshipped in a time when the world was very different but this is what they demanded; sacrifice in blood. I've seen no neopagans even sacrifice a living animal to "the gods" (although some may do). I agree that the reverence of nature is paramount, no matter what your faith is (as Bjorn is alluding to) but most modern pagans are in it for the fashion and the image, essentially role playing.
Never truer words said. Neopaganism is so romanticised, if any of them could travel back in time and saw how pagans lived and worshipped they’d probably have a coronary. Christianity however, underpins our 2000 year old civilisation. Religion is meant to be “strict” for a reason, because without these rules, society will unravel.

John Lamb Lash’s book “Not In His Image”, (the 15 year anniversary edition) is incredible & although I was convinced by reading the first edition, the new and revised edition totally blew my mind & has strengthened my Pagan Spirit & knowing of the gods, my feeling of strength, peace of mind & love for my ancestral lineages. His works are a must-read for all European racial groups.
Many in the US, like myself, are returning to it too. I recommend those interested to look into Asatru.
