Test - Fight Animation 2

- This was an animation I did a while back with Poser Pro 7. Originally it was created in Blender, but Monty Oum did me a solid and helped me convert everyting (models, rigs, replace animations, etc) to Poser. By the time I got this far on the project he convinced me to do something else with it. So I'm currently working on something way cooler. Which is why I consider this one a "Test".
Music: Shane Newville
Animation: Shane Newville & Monty Oum
Sound FX: Pepper
Software: Blender (modeling), PoserPro7 (animation), OptiTrack system for mocap, FL Studio for Music, Premiere for all the rest
Here's the story:
I had plans to contunue
Fight Test Animation
and actually make a story.
Then my hot wife sent me to
Rooster Teeth for my BDay
November 2010.
I spent a weekend
working with Monty Oum.
He took me through
the process in person, from
recording MoCap data while
wearing skin tight ball suits,
to editing sequences together
in Poser Pro.
As if that wasn't awesome enough,
he took my Blender project,
convert all the characters
and animation into Poser
files using the same workflow...
...in 1 weekend!!
Incredible how fast he is.
Pretty much kick started me
into a new direction with my work.
Since then he convinced
me to turn this project
into something even better.
So I'm on my 3 remake!
(you just watched v. 2)
Talk about practice.
Good thing I love
this kind of work.
So there's my lame excuse
for not finishing anything
since Little Ninja Project.
I can't wait to show
you what's cookin'.
Holy cow... You met Monty Oum. One of the lucky few.
"Met" is a bit of an understatement. This is Shane Newville, Monty's close friend and protégé.
@@Pebphiz i know im hella late but really??
@@boop3nowurded538 they ended up working on rwby until monty's passing, after which shane tried his best to honor monty's legacy and wrap up all of monty's unfinished work for volume 3 and make sure they ended up in the final product, before quitting work because rooster teeth was bought out and becoming super corporate and that was digging into his workflow and vision in rooster teeth, which was just doing cool shit with monty. he ended up going through hell trying to wrap up volume 3's fights and he got fired about a year later in a rather pissy fashion. I really had more to say about it referencing his open letter afterwards but your answer is simply up here.
He got fired for namely uhh "asking for important animators to help him in volume 3 finale fight when they are busy on other projects" and after firing him they had to get the same two animators to work on his part anyway so it's all super twisted stuff, they just didn't want monty's memes (by definition of richard dawkins) in rooster teeth anymore cause he adopted a rather "unprofessional" and unorthodox workflow that i assume forced other people to work around him which i bet was fine as he was the creator and director for rwby but once he passed away they didn't enjoy someone else in a lower position of power carrying on the tradition. By this point, RWBY was an intellectual property and rooster teeth was a brand. Luckily he wrote an open letter documenting much of his time in 3d animation, from finding mounty oum's work to meeting him and finding work at rooster teeth beside him after many trials and tribulations with low paying jobs and an entire family of two kids to feed in the middle of san diego where he reports temperatures to be over 100F almost year round. It later gives such an insight into the circumstances the first three volumes were conceived and what followed the year of monty's passing along with his personal struggles with potential divorce. I'm personally deeply grateful he ended up publishing all of this because it has personally resonated with me quite a lot the kind of "formal bullshit" he ended up going through and how resilient he was in following through with an unquenchable fire of passion to honor who is most likely his personal hero. I think he's been recently working under dillon, an animator who he recommended join the team for the fight animation of volume 3, who I think left aswell shortly after shane was fired. You can find their (and many other animators) collaborative work at dillongoo on youtube.
Knowing monty oum personally is good on its own.
And to see he isn't a selfish person and actually wants to help others to improve like you did, Shane, makes me a greater fan and admirer of his work than I really am.
Monty Oum, if you're ever reading that... thanks. You're really an awesome person.
lol i knew this animation seemed very monty oumish
That's the best choreography I've ever seen in blender
This video inspired me man, when I was wondering if anybody else had attempted fight animations in blender. That's all I wanted to say. Hoping for the best.
coolest fight music I've heard in a while...
@BLUEDRAGON16531 Yes, and I'm very grateful. He is not the usual super star. He doesn't let it go to his head being internationally known either. He actually wants more people to do what he does and is excited to see what people make. Not only that, he's willing to help other people (like me and you) to learn...that is if we are willing to go the extra distance to learn and apply the knowledge. I need to show some results very soon. Been so busy lately just surviving the world.
this really does look awesome plus you had some awesome and SICK MOVES MANNNN!!!!! totally epic
@devil8560 Are you trying to ask how I did it? I'll tell you anyway. It was extremely simple. I used shape keys. One shape key in the form of broken ground, then the other with all the rectangles hidden underneath the ground. Then i could easily animate the shape key slider as needed. Also made a bunch of duplicates as needed.
this is the best blender fight scene Iv seen, great comebacks & counters buy the guy in the black suit
zak loxray this was made in poser, not blender. just things like models or rigs were made in blender. I know that this is an old post, this is just so people dont get confused.
DementedCow all right ^^ I don't really know the difference anyway between these animation software ^^
Monty would be proud of this animation fight
Nah, he would constructively kick my butt into shape over this. Actually was the first he helped with to get me acquainted with Poser workflow. It is embarrassing to look at now, but fun to see how much I've grown. Still so much to learn and so much to improve on.
the wall break looks familiar... did you animate the one in the food fight in rwby v2?
No that was all Monty. This and that are completely different techniques.
I'd love to know how all of the badass wall/ground breaks in RWBY were done. My guess is the section of ground was made in whatever program, broken up, then rigged and animated?
Wow you met monty oum before his passing. And to actually do stuff with him.Lucky guy.
yeah i know that lol
It's cool that you can see some of this in the Megaman X Fanimation (X fighting the sword Guardroid) - well done sir!
that was freakin awsome dude!!!
this was awesome, love it.
This animation is amazing. I'm really new with blender and would like to learn how to Mocap. It would be great if you made a tutorial.
Was any mocap used in this? I'm having a lot of trouble making more lifelike movement, I'm about to break down and upgrade to poser 11 and get a kinect for some basic mocap to help speed things along. However I believe Monty made Dead Fantasy 1 & 2 and Haloid without any mocap whatsoever, which boggles my mind and I'm trying to figure out how to replicate his style so part of him can live on through me as he does with so many others. Any advice would be hugely appreciated!
Wow this is so awesome. The fight mechanics are very good. Love it.
@azmilarash96 Adjust the hip Xtrans, Ytrans, Ztrans (and rotations) to make sure each move starts in the same place the last one ended. On the animation palette in Poser, make sure to leave a little blank space between each move. That gives you room to key the hands, legs, etc so the transition from move to move. Also a lot of mocap is super slow, so we use "Retime Animation" a lot to speed things up. I personally like to use bvhacker to crop the data and center the hip's trans and rotation
@masterapmark Hey. It's possible to do it all in Blender. But yes, you are correct. I model in Blender, export the obj files, import to Poser, rig and animate. And so far I have been rendering from Poser too. I am rendering just the super simple preview render quality. So what you is pretty much what I see when animating. The characters are low poly enough so I get nice playback speed. But then I have also been doing the compositing in After Effects and finalizing in Premiere.
@LuccasBode Seriously. I am no one special. I am definitely grateful to have that opportunity. I got at him around Haloid and he was cool enough to respond even though he was famous. Since then I've tried to learn everything I can from him. He's definitely a cool guy. Some people would use they're popularity to put themselves above the "little people" and ignore them. Monty is the opposite. If he doesn't respond it's because he's too busy making an awesome movie for you to enjoy.
This is what rooster teeth needs for rwby.
Holy shit. Disregard my last comment about the mocap, I found an answer down the line of comments... as well as a link to the letter you wrote regarding Monty Oum and Rooster Teeth. I had been avoiding anything related to Monty's death until this last week or two. It was too painful to read anything about it, to acknowledge it. I skimmed over just about everything that had his name in it for a while. I had no idea about what was going on at RT. I had suspicions, a lot of what you said confirmed and clarified a lot of what I've been seeing and thinking about RT and RWBY. I'm so glad people like you are around to honor him properly, and that a part of him lives on through you.
Now, the reason that led me to this video and your letter in the first place... I currently feel like I'm drowning in an ocean of information, which is really a first-world problem if I ever heard one. I've had several clarifying moments in my life recently, and I've decided I want to follow in Monty's path as closely as possible, because what he created is literally all my favorite shit. From Haloid and Dead Fantasy to Vol 1 Ep 8 of RWBY (HOLY SHIT). He was my favorite, out of all the animes/cartoons and action sequences I've ever seen, Monty Oum stands at the top in my opinion. So he is who I want to emulate as closely as possible... especially since he is no longer with us. I know he had so much more to tell, and my body was so ready for it. It's a horrific feeling, knowing that most of that died with him and that those stories will never get told. But he gave a piece of that greatness to me, through his work and the inspiration it gives me, and I will use that to honor him in my work.
I've spent the last week looking into everything related to Monty, going deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole. Podcasts, interviews, short 5 minute videos that claim to have Monty in them, they've all been downloaded and saved and I'm working through them as I can. I'm already familiar with video editing, but not really any special effects or animation, and currently my efforts have brought me to Poser, which is where Monty started and what he swore by his entire career. I'm familiar with the UI and all the basics by now, and currently I'm just not sure what the best direction to go is, in order to take the quickest path to where Monty was.
I understand reaching a level of mastery like his will take years (10-15+) more of doing what I'm already doing (learning and expanding my skills and the way I do things), but do you personally have any favorite tutorials, people, videos, or certain corners of the internet that you find particularly helpful, especially (but not exclusively) for a beginner in Poser? As I said, Monty made my favorite pieces of entertainment that exist. I want to follow his footsteps, and be one of those carrying his torch. You were clearly very close to him, and intimate with his exact way of doing things, so your opinion is of great value to me. I read your entire letter, and the part about not wanting to waste Monty's time, about wanting to research what he was talking about before you got back to him so that you wouldn't appear lazy or slow, I feel that too. I'd feel very grateful if you were to take the time to read and respond to this, and whether or not you do, I'm determined to do some pretty cool shit. But you are unique in that I don't think anyone else can help me the way I believe you can.
@ShaneNewville So how do you do Poser and Blender? Do you model in Blender, import to Poser, Rig and Animate it... Well, then do you import it back to Blender for the rendering? Or do you import EVERYTHING you made in Blender, to Poser...
@AniCator Haha. That's one of the first things Monty said too. I like the wide angles because you can see more. Video games us it a lot. But he helped me understand a bit more of how to use it tastefully instead of all the time. If done right it can bring great emphasis to certain actions. I see it done in some kung fu movies. No right or wrong way to do it. But certain uses can bring a greater result.
That’s super cool Shane this is Steve son tavin!!!
WOW this is amazing, how much time did you spend simulating the fight? thanks for answering
Shanne Neuvile blender a little know how, but it's hard with the graphics is more about character only what I can and export makehuman but large effects are not giving :) And you took a lot of doing something takeigo? Well, and how to blend music to movie frames as windows media player is a bit weak :)
DMX 1 Adobe Premiere is good for blending/editing music, sound fx and video.
Welcome. I would like to ask how did video animation with sound as the two have connected with each other and how to model the characters, because they beheld programs like Poser but paid;)? Please help
DMX 1 If you cannot pay for software, I suggest learning Blender. It is free and it is powerful.
www.blender.org/
You sure like wide-angle lenses. :P Win. Great animation. ;)
Wtf... Ossum. I am thinking about gettin blender, looks fun
This is really awesome. How did you animate the fight scenes in Poser? Did you use any special packs such as "movie action" pack?
mix of hand keying and mocap. we had a mocap stage at the time so just suite up and try to do the moves the best we could. then key some more. no mocap is ever perfect.
+Shane Newville Thanks
Is poser only for animation and not creating props and clothing and characters? or can you do that too. I use Poser 10 if that helps with answer my two above questions.
You can do both
Though I'd advise using another program better suited to that
Like blender, Maya or somethin idk
O okay. Thank you.
@azmilarash96 ...some people think using mocap is cheating. It can be depending on how you use it. This way I think does save a lot of time, but still takes lots of work to make it do what you want. It's more of a starting point than anything. With Monty's setup, he has the stuff to be able to record his own mocap. So a lot of the moves I actually did. Then we bring it to Poser to do stuff to exaggerate the moves so more than I could do in real life. Main thing is adjusting the hip axis
It's great!!! How do you make the cam movements?? It seems so real.
0:28 is awsome :D
Witam. Chciałbym się spytać jak zrobiłeś filmik animacja z dźwiękiem jak oba połączyłeś ze sobą i jak modelowac postacie, bo widzałem programy typu Poser ale płatne;)? Prosze o pomoc
AMAZING
When do the full animation come out?
Awesome work !!! lucky you !!
Wow dude in black was from tron and dude in white was from assassins creed!
@fitzerg Most of what Monty has showed me he has also written in his DeviantArt and GameTrailers journals. But yes, seeing it in action makes a lot more sense. I wish I had time right now to do a screen cap of the process. Or at least what little I can. My tut would be a watered down version of his. Maybe some day I will get around to it.
@ShaneNewville One question is the program free to download?
Hi shan very nice animation i wanna ask you if i can have the rigged model of black guy plizzz !
well, i know it's a test and that's why why graphical design itself is rather poor, yet, the fighting animation is awesome, really. if you want to get well known for your work, i would suggest gaming-based animations, like skyrim, that is pretty much open for environment and character model extraction. incredible job there dude.
rad animation bro. mocap?
Wow! Is it possible for you to create a tutorial of the things you learned from Monty Oum?
@azmilarash96 all over the place. I mainly give credit to Pepper but I recorded and blended some myself as well. Maybe a few random ones from FindSounds-dot-com
Ooooh shite! Nice!
Isn't some of those moves in your Megaman X animation?
how did you get blender to work with poser? because i have poser 10
Patrick Mccully It does not work "with" it. I just used it for modeling props and characters. Then animated in Poser.
how do you transfer the props from blender to poser? is there something else I need to download? because i am getting weird shapes that I didn't make in blender to poser.
I am working on a motion comic and I wanna add some action fight scenes would you be interested to participate ?
@azmilarash96 Originally it was all hand keyed in Blender. The process Monty got me started still takes a lot of hand keying and clean up. It starts with choosing the right parts of different motion data. For example, import a bvh that has a lot of kicks. Then delete all the motion you're not using. Keep your fav kick. You do that over with everyting. First pieceing it together then working on timing. Then blending and tweaking so they flow together. I wish I could show you. should do a tut vid
@SfcoAWOL 1. both, since I originally animated all of it in Blender, it went a lot faster in Poser since we already knew what to do. So with Poser the mocap is more of a starting point. Every bvh file used had to be edited so much in order to get it to look right. And it is mixed with a lot of hand key motion / transitions, etc.
2. I have no idea. The one we used was OptiTrack. It was the one that has 8 cameras.
3. It does look cool but I could only dream of using any mocap system.
Amazing
Freaking awesome man . We accept your excuse lol
can u make a tut on how to make the black an red dude plz
How long u been doing this
rock solid bro nice
Wow I really need help with that
you got a subscriber
A - #1 !
cool
Hey Shane do you still animate?
yezzer
+Daniel Tchernov Lately everything I've been doing is building up a new library of 2d/3d fx. Mainly using Flash & AE. Will get back to things that look cool soon.
Huh I want to get into animating fight scenes similar to these ones any tips?
Also can't wait to see what's cooking.
can u make a tutorial on ur character is awesome
@azmilarash96 I used Particle Illusion to create electricity, then exported png image sequence with transparency. Then in After Effects I used a lot of small parts of the sequence, keyed the oppacity and animated the position of each one.
omg +sub
it would be dope if u could share some knowledge my friend..
1:17 what's this genre of music named?
Was trying to make drum & bass. There are much better tracks out there though. Teebee, 90s Photek, EZ Rollers, music on MethLab to name a few
@moemoe525 yes it is at blender.org
Stick Fighting, Level: God
