the majority of cars built in the last 20 years have plastic gas tanks, only metal that can rust is some parts of the pump/sender within the tank if you're evap system is not sealed or water in the gas when you get it.. really old gas can gum up and corrode which might be more of a threat if the tank is't completely sealed

Turbo is getting tired and will need replacing soon (hairline cracks in the hot side and just starting to weep some oil) but it starts every time you turn the key. May get the injector pump checked over when I do the turbo simply due to age and kms but no sign of it suffering any issues yet. @Glam Stachee Sorry, but over here in Aus, a good diesel beats a petrol powered unit any day for torque, reliability and economy when 4WDing and towing.

I actually am one of few people in the nation who specializes in Mazda Millennias. The reason I specialize in them is due to the S version. It has 2.3L v6 supercharged Miller Cycle engine which most mechanics don't work on. Yours seems to be the regular 2.5L v6. The local Mazda dealer actually calls me for advice when they encounter a S model. These Millennias are amazing cars. A bread of their own. Designed to be a luxury car by frugal Japanese. You could tell they cared about this car when they built them.

I wound up owning a '79 Buick Park Avenue that belonged to my great-uncle who left it to my dad upon his death. My dad kept it for a few years, driving it occasionally, but never really doing anything other than keeping it running. He called me one day (back in 2006) and asked me if I wanted Uncle Harry's old car... I told him "Why not?", and I ended up with 27 year old car with 27,900 original miles on it... pale blue with a darker blue vinyl top with the GM "rally" wheels on it! When I got to my dad's house and saw the car, my first impulse was to turn around and leave! The car had never been garaged, and my dad kept it under the extended roof on his workshop, completely open on three sides. The car had surface rust all down the drivers' side, and there was no telling the last time it had even been washed! I asked my dad if he was sure it was safe to drive the 60 miles back to my house, and he told me that he wouldn't be afraid to drive it across the country! Let me tell you: my dad was a lot braver than I was! It started up and ran well enough, and the headlights worked, but the ride was pretty bad and it pulled to one side quite a bit (which mostly turned out to be a very low front tire!) I stopped at the first gas station on the way home and put about half a tank of gas in it, and aired up all the tires... that helped a lot! After that, I kept the car for another 7 years, flushing and changing the oil (I wound up pulling the oil pan... it was full of sludge!), replacing the belts and all hoses, changing the transmission fluid (it had the Buick 5.7 and TH-400 trans), flushing the cooling system, rebuilding the carburetor, replacing the intake and valve cover gaskets, compounding and waxing the paint, replacing the headliner, and cleaning the interior (it had the velour interior... reminded you of a brothel!) It had a set of Dunlop whitewall tires on it that looked like brand new... after one of them exploded just as I was turning into my driveway (scared me to death!), I found out that the tires were 11 years old! New tires, new shocks, new brakes... My dad passed away in 2009, and I wound up selling the car soon after that... too many memories!

I read this in Car and Driver, some 30 years ago. I paraphrase...
Editor David E. Davis, Jr was on holiday with his wife. A staffer, the original road warrior, Andre Idzikowski, was taking care of their dogs. He was feeding them one day when he heard angry sounds in the garage.
He grabs one of DED's shotguns and heads to the garage, only to find two pissed off raccoons... trust me, you don't want to cross a pissed off raccoon. Let alone 2! So Andre did the right thing for his own safety and blasted said critters.
The next part is what sucks... sad for the raccoons, yes, but... they were inside a then nearly new Ferrari 328 GTS. The roof was off, but the windows were up. Apparently, they climbed the hood and up the windscreen they went... falling into the car. Once inside, they laid waste to the interior. Seats, dash, door cards, WIRING... the final repair was about $23k... in 1989 money. Ouch.
    lessons learned...

Worse nightmare of a car, for me, was a 2004 Suzuki Forenza. This car had a hard life before I got it; light front end crash that ruined the headlight assemblies, totaled out the car and gave it a red title. After that it sat for 2 years before being bought at auction by a local small dealership. Bought it knowing the water pump had gone bad (come to find out, the radiator had broken internally from the accident and had sent plastic pieces around inside the engine). Put a water pump and timing chain on it, and drove it hard for 6 months. I'm talking 1000 mile round trips, super bad back roads, daily commutes in terrible traffic, it really did fine until the new water pump seized while I was passing someone and destroyed the camshaft gears with the sudden stop from 5000 rpm. I miss that car honestly

I once got a 92 Lincoln Continental that sat at a transmission shop I knew and did business with. The guy had the transmission rebuilt but then did not pay and just disappeared. It sat for almost a year and needed lots of repairs and a big tuneup. But it served me well for years after that.

It really is a shame about that Millennia. I worked for a Mazda dealer in the early 00's and am very familiar with those cars and their history. I owned a 98 and even once wrecked a company owned one by crashing it into a tree (which I walked away from). A good and unique car in that segment from a company known for its engineering. You probably already know this, but that car was supposed to launch Mazda's own luxury brand to compete with Lexus and Acura which never happened and was built in a dedicated assembly plant in Hiroshima.

I feel lucky then. My mechanic stored a minivan for me for three years with a full tank( + 3 bottles of HEET) and connected battery. When it was time to get her back out I had him replace all tires because beyond flat spots it was an outdoor storage and a paint buff. I put some octane booster in the tank and shook with a rollback ride home. Once she got home I boosted the battery and she roared to life. Two weeks later the battery died.Lol

Putting a used Mazda disty in there was a wise choice. I had a 93 Ford Probe with the 2.5l Mazda v6 that suffers from the same ignitor issue. I put an autozone unit in there, died 3 months later. I replaced it 3 more times over the next year with the lifetime warranty. Then they refused to replace anymore. I ended up bypassing the internal ignitor to an HEI module I mounted outside the disty. No more issues after that.

My worst car nightmare was when I had a 1994 Chevy Caprice Classic w/ the 4.3 V8. Only had it for a month. It was idling rough and stalled when at stoplights if I didn't keep it above 800rpm. Finally brought it in for an inspection on the lift, and it turned out it was completely rusted out on the frame, totally shot. Someone tried to patch part of the frame, but the metal they used was literally like scrap metal, and the welding was shoddy at best. The engine leaked so much oil, I was easily putting in 1-2 quarts a week. The mechanics said it was probably the leaking oil that kept the transmission from ceasing up from rust, lol. I was so naive about cars back then. I just wanted it because it was so cool, my first "boat". It was beautiful up top, not a scratch or dent anywhere on it. Interior was in good shape, and after a through cleaning, it was immaculate. It only had like 90k miles. But underneath, it was basically junk. The frame was shot, the back floor was less than 1/8 thick due to rust, and the engine and transmission were on their last legs. I was told just the parts (basically a new frame, rebuilt engine & transmission, and all rust repair) alone to get it in basic running condition would be $3k, not including labor. The seller assured me there were no rust issues, and it ran fine. I don't think it was her fault, she was a single middle-aged mom, who probably didn't know anything about cars. The reason she was selling it was because her daughter wanted a smaller, easier to drive car for school. It had passed inspection before I bought it, but the shop said whoever inspected it must've "had their blinders on" when looking it over. I was screwed. I instantly regretted trading my perfectly good '98 Corolla for it. But it was a learning experience none-the-less. I've learned so much about cars since then, and have vowed to be much more careful and critical of what I'm buying/trading.

This is older information. If a mid 80’s Ford stops idling, you have to clean the IAC (idle valve that bypasses the throttle butterfly). Some of them have an anti-crud coating that “cannot be cleaned”. Just separate the electronics and use carburetor cleaner anyway. Yes, that will remove the coating but it did not work anyway. Chryslers seem to never need cleaning. They crud up too but they can adapt farther from factory settings so you don’t notice it....until it sits at the airport for three weeks and the battery goes dead. It is now back to factory settings and, having adapted farther than a Ford is capable of, now it won’t even start so it can’t learn. You have to clean or replace the IAC.

Once a month or 2 or 3, you can drive it one foot forward or back so it sits on a different section of tires. The gas tank has less condensation if it is full. I like the Startron from the Walmart boat section in the fuel, and run the engine enough so it is in the carb or fuel injectors. Moth balls will keep mice away. My one motorcycle has a storage area under the passenger seat and a mouse added bedding there- I added pieces of foam insulation to fill up this space. See the Project Farm RUclips videos for maintenance tips.

i put stabilizer in if i anticipate 3-4 months sitting and run it enough to circulate through whole system, they sit dry they'll collect moisture and rust. If it looks like years, 1/4 can of wd40 down the intake and block off, drain all coolant, put 1/4 - 1/2 gallon of straight coolant into block, insect and rodent poison in trunk, foam all holes and grommets, wet all unpainted metal with bar oil, gear oil, spray lithium or similar. If the fuel lines are newer and look like they'll survive long term storage, i fill them with kerosene or light oil.
The coolant thing is important, full coolant will conduct between dissimilar metals and get worse as galvanic reaction continues, draining breaks that conductance. iron blocks will condense moisture however, enough to crack or pop freeze plugs, pop the plugs and it's a rusty mess inside, that's why the antifreeze that just sits in the bottom of the block.

Four years ago I've bought an Alfa 166 V6 that has been sitting for more than ten years. All four tyres flat, handbrake all the way up, battery connected and completely dead. Surprisingly enough with some fresh petrol and battery it has decided to start once more and roll on the trailer. But returning that car back on road was not that simple. New belts, engine flush and than some new oil, all four brakes together with parking brake cables and hoses. Fuel pump needed to be replaced as well and many more things to do. It took almost four months to get it street legal again (smoke test and MOT) but since then it drives flawlessly .
