There aren't any quality live recordings with Tommy, yet. Don't be a dumbass.

    • @GuitarGuy057
      @GuitarGuy057 6 лет назад +21

You can still tell Roy's more flawless in intonation and pitch location and smoother in execution overall, regardless of audio quality.
Tommy's great. No doubt about it, no questions asked. But Roy was the very HEART of Kamelot. Tommy lacks the richness Khan brought. And comparing anybody to Roy is just unfuckingfair. Tommy stands alone on his own. But even the best of the best just can't top what Khan brought to the table.
Like, Hansi of Blind Guardian has always been my biggest vocal inspiration, but I can't ever say he's as flawless as Roy is live. Even though I much prefer Blind Guardian as a band, and Hansi is my idol i prefer both bands live. But Roy's just on a different plane. And being second best to him is no small achievement.
      Khantatat>Kürsch>Karevik.
      Period.

This is like comparing marty friedman to kiko loureiro, But worse because the technical gap is much shorter, in some aspects Tommy seems to be more depured technically, but a lot of elite singers are, Khans advantage over the rest is not technique (tho he is not lacking in this) but in his amazing interpretation and expression of the songs. Something I think is fair to add in Tommy's defense is that all of these songs were written with Khan's voice, range, style in mind making it obvious why it sounds better in Khan's voice. That being said, Tommy definitely isnt a bad singer and many of the newer kamelot songs I wouldn't mind placing above older kamelot songs.

Kamelot fan since The Black Halo days and Seventh Wonder fan since the Mercy Fall days here and I think both are equally fantastic. Khan tends to be my preference but that's because he was one of the first vocalists that made me start experiment with singing (it wasn't until I heard Tobias Sammet with Edguy and Avantasia that I started getting serious, though). However, Tommy is also one of the most incredible vocalists I've ever heard.
The way I see it, they're two very different styles of vocalist. Roy obviously has the edge because of his operatic training and theatrical voice. He and Andy Kuntz from Vanden Plas are two of the best in that regard. However, Tommy has phenomenal control over his voice, along with great power in the higher notes, a seemingly wider range and he uses distortion a LOT more than Roy does, which enables him to convey aggressiveness to a greater degree than Roy.
Tommy did a fantastic job of adapting from his Seventh Wonder style (where he tends to go all-out on vocal acrobatics) to the more reserved, theatrical approach of Roy's vocal work. I was genuinely shocked when I heard his voice on Silverthorn, I didn't realize he was so diverse and capable of adapting so much. Last I heard him, he was wailing ridiculously awesome high notes like the ones in The Great Escape, but then we hear him singing lower and intentionally restrictive vocally. It was a very welcome change as well. I love Roy's voice and I prefer his era of Kamelot but Tommy has been a phenomenal choice. It seems Youngblood and the rest of the guys wanted to choose a vocalist that could emulate Roy's voice without directly cloning it and they selected a PERFECT fit.
I know that band fanbases can get really bitter over vocalist changes (another example is Killswitch Engage; I love both vocalists but fans love to argue about them), but it'd be really nice to just have one day where fans can accept that both vocalists were amazing for the band, even if they have a personal preference.

Replacing a vocalist is one of the hardest things a band can go through.it'll often make or break a band. In the case of Roy and Tommy, it's like cooking your favorite dish. You use fresh ingredients and spices and it comes out amazing. On the other hand you use dry ingredients and generic spices, it still comes out pretty good but it's just not the same.

Vocally they are both similar (see vocal range below). However, it is my opinion that Roy shows more emotion in the songs due to writing/co-writing them, and you can see how the latest album shows Tommy is more connected with the songs he was involved with writing/co-writing.
As for live performances, I have to give it to Tommy as his stage presence is what a great frontman does (use of the stage, interaction with the band, audience involvement). Roy tends to stay in his spot with little movement. As reference, see the performances listed below. All but one are from live DVD recordings.
    3 octaves, 6 notes: Tommy Karevik (D2 to C6)
    3 octaves, 5 notes: Roy Khan (Bb1 to F#5)
    For comparison ~ 4 octaves : Geoff Tate (A1 to A5), Jon Oliva (A1 to A5), Freddie Mercury (F2 to F6)

Can't say Tommy is a bad singer because he isn't. But there are many good singers and there is Khan. He's definetely more than just a good singer, even than great singer. He's true artist, he writes his own meaningful lyrics, always sings with so much emotions, oh and his theatrical-like performances!
And Tommy is what? Good singer? Good for him..

This is not a knock on Tommy(who's a fantastic singer in his own right) but Roy comes out on top. He knows when to hold back a half step to give that struggle in his voice. Not that he couldn't hit the note, it was an artistic choice(and a smart one). Plus his stage presence is unmatched.

I love Tommy Karevik's voice. He's really good. He's done a great job stepping into the void left by Roy. BUT, Roy Khan's voice is what made Kamelot my #1 favorite band. His vocals in March of Mephisto made my jaw drop, especially as the music for a Hellsing Ultimate AMV. Roy Khan has a bit more powerful of a voice, I think, and idk.... there's a certain je-ne-sais-quois about it. I'm still proud af of Tommy Karevik though. I mean, he's basically as close as anybody is going to get to Roy Khan, which is still quite an accomplishment.

    •  4 года назад

Tommy is a low tenor and Roy is a baritone so totally different voices, plus roy is classical trained Tommy karevik is self taught, he's doing his best to sing songs written for roy khan timbre of voice... I love them both even if roy wins on his songs

Still listening to this comparison on 2022. I can say Roy and Tommy are absolutely crazy good singers. Have different styles. Even though I love how Khan sang with Kamelot, and now with Tommy has a different more plastic vibe, still, I think he does have more freedom to sing with Seventh Wonder than with Kamelot as he had to keep Roy characters and singing style. But he can beat Roy on some singing techniques, but Roy is about that theatrical part that no one can do, and that gives that singing style a plus. Both are great, way too different, but they needed a guy with crazy talent to fill the biggest shoes ever. Nightwish when this happened with Tarja ended not going very well for Annette Olson. But now having Floor Jansen worked very well for them. Great video as well!

  • @borislavm.8148
    @borislavm.8148 4 года назад +2

Both are great singers. I personally prefer Roy's voice, since it's a Baritone and his high notes require a lot more tension and have a more distinctive edge. Whereas Tommy's is more like a Tenor if I'm not wrong, and his high notes just sound a little bit dry and easy, more effortless, less emotional to me.

Roy Khan had an unique interpretation that carries on even in the songs Tommy performs. It's like those songs were made for Roy's performance. Tommy, even as a great vocalist, tries to replicate Roy's songs. Basically, Roy was the identity of the band.

  • @dasRot2011

We are trying to compare God, with another God. I grew up listening Roy with Concetion, and then with Kamelot. What can I say ?. This guy is not human, but someday, I found Seventh Wonder on you tube, I found a new guy singing like a fucking god, and some time later, he took the place Roy left. Tommy not only had to sing well, but he also had to fit THE PLACE of God.
Both are fucking damm great singers. Both of them express emotions in their singing. So now we only have to decide if we prefer Roy or Tommy, or be smart and listen both, because we had the gift of knowing them.

Roy carries something that is beyond singing and words and everyone sensitive enough can sense it, there's no replacement for that. Tommy is a good singer and great guy but doesn't have that factor. I wish he did have it and what KAmelot was lives on. In that sense, to me, Roy WAS Kamelot. Wish I see him again in Kamelot before we all kick the bucket. To me, we all our losing something precious with each day he is not in that band..........

The new guy is probably better on a technical level but he is also far more generic sounding. I know it sounds harsh but he could literally be anyone with a great, clean voice.

They are both amazing singers in their own ways. Tommy Karevik specfically what he does with Seventh Wonder is OUT OF THIS WORLD, he just really doesn't reach of impressiveness with Kamelot. But for Kamelot, there is just something so insanely unique with his voice that is impossible match. I'm happy for him that he's living a more a wholesome life now away from the spotlight, but it's still a shame we lost such an amazing voice and performer.

Yah'll also forget 2 really important things. Roy is Classically taught and joined Kamelot when Tommy was like in Jr. High-er- Secondary school (?).... And Tommy has never had any lessons. He is completely self taught.
No one can touch Roy, but Tommy sings these songs very well. THAT we can agree on.
It's not like comparing Nightwish singers, which everyone sounds completely different (though I've been a huuuuuuge Floor fan since 2010ish), And near everyone dislikes Anette(she sucked in Nightwish imho, great pop singer, though).

As much I love Roy's work with Kamelot, this is kind of an unfair comparison of him and Tommy. Because, as much emotion that goes into kamelot's lyrics and performances it's impossible for Tommy to reach all the way to the top, especially with the "older material, simply because he didn't write the material. Every performance of Roy's work, cannot be more than an emulation of how Roy sings it. So while Tommy does an excellent job at that. In the end, Roy's lyrics are just "ink on paper" to Tommy. And that's why i figure piting a "new" vocalist against a previous vocalist is a bit of an unfair comparison. Do I like Roy better? Yes. Absolutely. But Tommy really does a good job, and a damned good one too. And in the end I think Roy did what was best for him, and that's admirable in it's own way.
