You have hit on the most critical aspect of the ‘journey’ for all of us….and most of your lessons have alluded to it…. Be happy with who we are on our instruments. Love you buddy, thank you 🙏
Great video! I retired from playing shows and traveling, because I was really miserable. I would constantly drinking and that was part of the band. I quit drinking, quit the band, and now I'm going on 14 years clean and enjoy just collecting guitars and playing at home. And also learning theory finally.. some things aren't worth it.
Very humble video David - and kudos for offering the vulnerability of your journey for - what I see - as a chance for others to also self-reflect after watching and find where true value lies in human nature and our individual adventures. Two thumbs way up and thanks for all your lessons.
Great video. I definitely was a ‘competitive’ guitar player in my youth. For me, now days, guitar is a hobby... better said, an escape from whatever the stress of the day is. I truly do enjoy my time with it more. I think you also have to identify your playing goals. For me, I like to create my own music. Before I figured this out I had lapses in my playing because I was just learning songs, but not enjoying it (lots of ppl love that part, which is great... just not me). A few years back I took months off to learn drums... that almost had as big of a positive impact on my guitar playing as on my drumming. Made me think definitely about the instrument. Take care...
I've been following you for a few years and have bought Guitar Infusion [ which is brilliant by the way] and a few other courses. I was put off when the name was temporarily changed and things felt like they were being pushed. It put me off a bit but because I valued your courses and you're a really great teacher , I hung around. Thankfully , over the last few months , things feel like they used to. I wonder, seeing this video , if those times correspond with your story . Huge respect for being so open . I'm sure this will resonate with a lot of people , it certainly does with me
Great advice. But hey, your lessons have helped me immensely. I am an old guy noodling around the house and I am having so much more fun since I found your lessons a few years back. l am slowly improving my chops, but l really don’t care about shredding, just trying to create nice lines and learning always learning and making my own music. David you are a great teacher. Your musicality is on a very high level. “Evolving Seeds of Glory” is a great body of work. But, yeah sometimes one just has to play. Thanks for all you have done for me. Remember to smell the roses.
very meaningful lesson David. I always found myself trying to compete and out shred local guitar players by endless hours of practicing. I look at that as inspiration and it pushes me to constantly learn and get better. the thing is, there will always be someone better and you have to just accept that and move on. I've almost quit playing a few times and thought taught me to just play the guitar and remember that its not a competition . if anything it taught me not to envy a truly skilled player but to appreciate their dedication to the craft.
Thank you, David. This is, imho, the most liberating mindset for anyone who lives for the music. This is a poorly stated condition on my part but I believe those who do, indeed, "live" for music will understand. It took me from my teens until 2017 to get it myself. You are way ahead of the curve! Pax!
Remarkable video. Profound and quite thought provoking. I wish our world had more heart-felt sharing like this. It is so powerful when someone shares their genuine experience. Thanks for that David.
Nice video, while I only ever play for myself, I do tend to look at how poorly I play compared to others, yet I have no ambition to play live or in a band, I just always loved solo guitar and wanted to be able to do that, to have the mindset that it is cool to enjoy at any level is far healthier than to be annoyed at yourself for not sounding as awesome as others. I have often picked up the guitar and played to a backing track and thought this is so boring that I seriously think of selling it all, but now and then hit a good spot where I think how did I do that? And those are great moments. Bye bye to guilt over not progressing as much as I thought I should, hello to just enjoying it for it's own sake.
That's the reason why I "only" became a semi-professional, in germany the pressure is no less in my opinion. thanks so much for your openness... lovely greetings from germany David
I've followed you for some time now (a year? two?) and have purchased some training material (have not used it per your advice - entirely on me) and was really amazed by this video! I oddly noted to myself some months back when you posted a video asking for feedback on what we, as the audience, most wanted, that you seemed down. You seemed something other than the enthusiastic, engaged musician that I had been drawn to. This was noteworthy to me because of my own musical experience, but I was troubled as an internet fanboy that really couldn't effect much change anyway and let it be. I can't respond to your open and honest vlog because I have no basis for understanding it. I've not experienced your level of success. I have no idea what your experience might have cost you or brought to you, but I felt a relief that you had achieved something in that experience and perspective that many do not. I hope to see your honestly enthusiastic lessons going forward and I "pray" (I'm not a particularly religious person, but I hope I am spiritual on some level) that your life is grounded in the things you love, you are surrounded by people who make you feel needed and you have achieved a level of success that fulfills you. Know that you have touched lives - even those among us who won't ever achieve musical satisfaction to a level they have known before. Life is change.
Your message and its delivery is just great! What you have learned applies to many many disciplines, and it is such an important lesson for all of us to learn. Thanks for sharing it David!
Thank you bro! Spot on every aspects of our lives as a guitarist/musicians, i have a wife and son and they're my audience... The reason i'm practicing or wanting to progress is mainly to have something to teach to my son and also beating my self what i can do yesterday. You're right it is not a competition with anybody but with ourselves alone plus being a good example and testimony to our family. We love you man! ❤️🙏🎸🥂
Thanks for sharing, David. It always sounds like you're talking for the heart. I know too well how to push yourself out of enjoying playing guitar. It becomes a duty. I can torture myself with a practise regime too easily! Thanks for giving me permission to just enjoy, and not push so hard.
Hey David! I grew up in Fort Collins - 1975 Poudre High School Grad - now living in Sydney Australia for past 40 years - I just discovered you last week - love your work!
Interesting video. There is a fine line between driving yourself to be better, and being all consumed with it. The question we have to ask ourselves is pretty straightforward: if I stop working hard at something (or slow down my production to a manageable level), will I still be okay with those results? We are inundated with the idea that everyone can have everything because that's fair. The old cliché has been completely lost in modern culture: Life's not fair. Work hard, and you might succeed. The harder your work, the better the odds, but they are still just odds, not guarantees. And if you fail, (this is the hardest part), it's probably your fault. Own it and do better next time. At the end of the day, we've forgotten how to be content because of the access to excess that we all see daily. That's not reality for 99% of the world, but that's nearly impossible to see when you view life from behind the screen of your phone.
Very cool video. I’ve been with you for a very long time and this video was all the more interesting having watch you live through your experience. Love your channel. Thanks.
Thanks for this video, I think this has a high Zen quality, what you're doing here is freeing yourself from the infinate Ratrace which sociëty implies on you. I'm a jazz musician and I'm doing excactly this, playing for my pleasure not competing with anyone, this mindset has freed me from many pré- conceived ideas, you're on the right mental path. Greetings Vic.
The world as most people see it....is really fucked up. I really feel you know what you need to live for. Good to see you evaluating this physical and mental realm. Best of love, life and happiness.
Awesome David...great sharing Love that tree. Been following for a few years now...since 2012 I believe...may spring for your Infusion course...seems the timing is right. God bless you greatly!
I stopped going to Blues jams because it was like competing in a contest. I'd hear comments like he's good but the other guy is faster or better or more Jazz Blues. The way I look at it is music is a form of personal expression which every player has. You must enjoy the differences between players and not get hung up on comparing them. Since I stopped going to the jams I keep 12 to 14 tunes on my sound cloud which are all free, I ask for nothing but always thank the people who follow me. David you stuff is great, I thank for what you give here. I've been player for 55 years now and have become comfortable learning and accepting I will dye getting better each day. Peace from Los Angeles
Thank you for adding the human element to our journey. Be a better human being and you'll be a better father, mother, brother, sister and yes a guitarist. Cheers to you and yours🙏
That is how I ended in a hospital last year with heart failure, I am done with crazy work . And the interesting is when you fall must of the time the ball you were chasing are not even your Desires , but desires society , community imposes on you
Thanks David, a reflection which we all can learn from. We are here but once, it’s not a rehearsal, there are no prizes for how far we get along the journey as materialistic things are simply that. For those of us on the proverbial treadmill of learning to become better and achieve more in our playing is really based on our love of music and the guitar, so we really need to enjoy the simple achievements; for example simple melodic sentences made from triads. Yep, it might not make money but if it gives someone joy and a feeling of well-being, well it’s worth it. Thanks. Acoustic player and Student of Infusion.
Thank u David sir 🙏 for all ur lessons tips advice ❤️🙏 Music is a never ending journey and it goes on and on .... And yes enjoy ur self whatever we do . 🙏🥰✊🙏 . Thank you once again ❤️🙏
Thanks for this, David. Heartfelt and genuine. Your message fits in with the book “Zen Guitar” by Philip Toshio Sudo. If you’re Christian don’t let the Zen in the title freak you out. Its overall message is good.

As a retail manager, who is always trying to beat the previous months numbers, this is very relatable. Once you get to a certain point, it's impossible. I just wish the owner of my store would watch this video... 😑
Thanks for being so open and honest. I use to think you had to be as good as van halen or gilmour ect. But know I play my own style and don't worry about these things and have fun every time I play and kind of have my own style and sound.
I'm not comparing your playing or mine for that matter, the points you make are spot on. Here's the rub, before he passed I'd seen Eddie Van Halen numerous times in concert, you ever notice that happy smile he had on face most of the time he played? I think like you he realized "the gift" and I always try to play that way.
So you never mentioned why people would quit. Iknow already, I'm just saying, but anyway God bless you for all your hard work and help and above all, not quiting. Hope it all goes well for you!😇
