  • Make Windows 11 More Secure
When it comes to Windows 10 and Windows 11 security, its pretty good. But it could be even better with this one simple trick. By default, windows runs as administrator and this is not good for security. You want to be running as a standard user and have administrator account as the boss to what installs and want don't on your computer. This give maximum protection to your pc against malware, viruses and malware. A Standard User Account is more secure and recommended for everyday tasks. Standard Account, is a extra level of protection that keep your system secure from easy attacks

      1) You didn't make any mention of User Account Control which does offer protection for user accounts with elevated privileges! You could have enabled the built-in Administrator account by right-clicking on the account in the Computer Management console and clicking on properties! Why use the Computer Management console to set the password of the built-in Administrator account and use the command prompt to enable the account? You could've shown both methods: using the Computer Management console to enable and set the password, and using the command prompt to do the both (activate and set password)!

What good is generic security advice without a strategy?

    • @DurandArthur
      @DurandArthur 2 года назад +1

Its pointless for the majority of users to run as a standard user! The majority of users will provide administrator credentials to apps that they trust without verifying the source! If a standard user as an example downloads a piece of malware or ransomware under the false pretense (bundled and branded as an app or software), they will allow the app to run as administrator and provide the password to the admin account, which would defeat the purpose of the generic security advice offered in this video!

You should never enable the default local administrator of a pc.
Instead you should create a additional user with admin rights that you only use when elavated admin rights is needed.
Enabling default administrator is a security risk.

No thanks ... the less windows bugs me with having to input things and answer questions the happier I am ....
Standard accounts means nothing if the stupid user is gonna click something and still fill in the password to let it run, just like he would with an admin account.

Brian I am a little confused by the video so I have it right does this mean that everything I run for example regedit, command prompt, system settings, and apps or programs already installed etc etc I will be prompted to run as the "dedicated" administrator?? as this looks to me to become a long-winded and time-consuming process. I see your point on stopping any crap from installing on my machines (does this apply for Windows 10 machines too??) but don't want to get caught by having to ok everything I want to do?? Is there any way of doing this via a Windows Settings area?

to be clear, this is important. However as described in this video it doesn't follow the steps as shown in here. Windows 11 home here. Before I would attempt messing with an admins credentials I would need to be sure of what I am doing and this video while helpful doesn't show me exactly what steps to take. Firstly it doesn't show how to get to the admin account to begin with. Oh this video shows how to on the example machine but on mine no it doesn't. After hunting around it does show me how to add another user account but how to change the admin one to local user no it doesn't. Bingo at that point all changes came to a halt...

Thinking about, maybe the System32 prank would never have happened if Windows was factory configured to ask for the current user's password every time a system file is selected, and not prompt you with a basic warning like "oh you double sure bro?", because most enticed were young ones that probably had to request their parents for the PW. Sick.

  • @YT-ks9go

But you can just turn UAC to maximum on the Admin account? This does the same as having a separate account. It forces you to need to click to install any software.
I tried this but it caused issues as I could not make registry changes and other changes I needed. I keep having to go back to the Administrator and changing the normal account back to Administrator. It is also messy having two accounts.
Are you sure this is necessary for a single user on a computer with UAC set to maximum?

You don't have to Enable de Administrator account. Just set a password for it, and then you can still use it for RunAs, as well as for logging into Safe Mode. If you enable it, might as well rename it for security reasons, because "administrator" is very commonly used. I prefer un_adm for my business PCs.

    There are 4 options.
    1. Anywhere
    2. Anywhere, but let me know if there is a comparable app in the Microsoft Store.
    3. Anywhere, but warn me before I install an app that is not from the Microsoft Store
    4. The Microsoft Store Only (Recommended)
    I chose option 3.
This way, no matter what software I install, if it is not from Microsoft Store there will be a window popping up warning me, and asking me if I wish to proceed.

UAC (by default) is already designed to warn the user whenever you try to run a program as administrator. Granted there are ways to bypass UAC and this method sure is more secure, but consider this:
In Windows 7 UAC was more aggressive with it's warnings, people got so pissed off about "having to click yes for every action", that they toned it down for Win 8, 10 and 11.
This method adds password entry to that confirmation, and I think average user will become pissed off much faster at this.
I know that security and convenience are on different sides, but if people get tired and just click Yes on UAC prompts, password entry won't help them much.
And as for ransomware, there are controlled folder access and core isolation nobody uses.
