I had a "mechanic" work on my 50hp yamaha because it wouldn't idle, run full rpm, etc. i spent $300.00 for nothing and was telling him the entire time that i thought the carbs needed cleaning or rebuilt, to no avail. Anyway, i came across your video and it gave me the courage to break down the carbs and clean them myself. i took it out yesterday and it ran flawlessly! i can't thank you enough for putting this great video together. Gonna watch your Linkage Adjustment video next, just to make sure everything is running in harmony as it should! Thanks again!
Dear brother, My great thanks for your video.. I am working on cargo ship. We have good experience on diesel engines. But in Outbound motors it is comparatively less. Your video greatly helped me in troubleshooting the starting of our ships rescue boat OBM. We are in the edge to call for shore support for repair. But your clear details in this video absolutely helped me to identify the exact trouble and to rectify it. We all are thankful to you brother. Keep it up.
Can't thank you enough. I've got a Yamaha 40hp outboard and it stop idling and ran like crap. Watch your video and BAM it's all fix. Also set up the CDI unit off your other video and now it runs perfect. Cheers from Australia
I appreciated your carburetor cleaning tutorial and you taught me several things. I would not have been able to identify which of the three carburetors went to which position before I watched this tutorial. And, I was not aware of the small hole between the two jets that you pointed out. Great job referencing the Yamaha manual like you did when you said not to use steel/iron probes to clean out the small holes. And you did it again when you referenced the correct float height. Many video presenters simply make statements without identifying whether that is their experience talking or something the manufacturer put out in print.
This is the best carb cleaning video I have seen. I have a Manual for my 2000 Johnson, but pictures are unclear. Thank you for your thorough explanations. I’m one step closer to feeling confident enough to try it.
Great video! You know your stuff about Carbs. I have a 1986 50ELJ WAS FLOODING OUT! Followed your video instructions. Guess what, Runs like a Champ Now! Thanks A million.
I liked and subscribed, I got a like new 2008 Yamaha 50, it’s been sitting 5 years, you just gave me the confidence to take these carbs apart, I’ve seen it done a few times, but this will be my first solo mission! Great video! Thank you!
Great instructional video. My c40 has a huge loss of HP and I've done everything but a carb rebuild. Just ordered a kit. Not a problem with your direction. Many thanks.
Great video and very helpful. Its pretty similar to my yamaha 20hp 2 stroke and I was able to bring it back to life! My only sugguestion is if anyone doesnt want to wait or pay for 24 gauge copper wire, most ethernet and phone cables are made with 24 guage copper, so if you have some kicking around you can strip that and use it to clean out the jets.
Great video I have a 2008 50 Yamaha that is surging at all speeds The motor was sitting 2 years before i installed it I replaced the fuel pump and still runs rough Next is pulling the carbs. This vid took the fear out of removing them
Ive a problem on a similar engine, just a different CDI unit and throttle linkage, which starts and runs if you choke it (manual flip switch on the control unit) for around maybe 10 seconds and dies out, it wants to run on higher RPMs, but idles really rough at times an stops suddenly. My guess are these tiny holes in the idle circuit on the top of the carbs. Great videos man!
Thanks! That's the first thing I would look at, make sure the carbs are as clean as possible. Those little holes in the jets can get clogged and play havoc with the engine!
Great explanation. Thank you so much. I have a yamaha e15d model. Can you please specify the idle air mixture settings? How many turns should I open from fully closed? I am not getting a low idle speed
thanks for the video! I wish you would of shown the rebuild of the other 2 carbs. I like how you explained how they function and the proper re-assembly. I just picked up a 50 hp yamaha. ...thanks again!
I believe you just repeat the same procedure as the first one. The only difference as with mine is the fuel pump is attached to the centre carb on my 30 Yamaha 2 stroke.
Thank You for such a detailed video I have a 40 hp Yamaha that has no gas coming out of the bottom Carb when I took the plug out. I know I can clean it now and it should start to run on that cylinder again. Thank You.
I stumbled across your videos, only RUclips knows how. Your carb tutorial is very well done, much better than other high-end content folks. I have a 90TLRV that I rebuilt last winter and the carbs are basically the same. Good work. Nice delivery. Good content. Subbed.
U can use Lacquer Thinner to clean carburetor without taking them apart . If the needle and seat are stuck spray L.T. in the side of the carb while it's running
Hi mate my 24g wire arrived today from amazon and ill probably start to look at the carbs tommorow ,i have an 6h4 model 40hp think its about a 87 /88 a bit long in the tooth but i think t has potential as a runner there still selling for anything up to 4 g aus , it cost me around 800 and so far i have spent maybe 100 dollars on it all up . I believe that the carb float is different on this model horseshoe looking thing so pictures show me once i have inspected the open carb and especially the needle valve ill decide if it needs a rebuild kit (probably does) anyway i keep refering back to your video for tips .
Awesome Video. By far the best I have seen regarding cleaning the Yamaha Carbs. One question: I have a 2000 Yamaha 55hp 2 stroke, do know how far to back off the idle mixture needle for that hp? Thanks and great video
By far the best carb cleaning video on RUclips! Question, how tight do you seat the philips screw that holds the float? Do you seat it all the way and then bend the metal tab for adjustments?
First, thanks so much for posting this. It's well filmed, clear, and as concise as it can be without missing anything important. I really appreciate it. I have just one "stupid" question: how do I know if I have an E, M, or EM model? I need to know what pilot screw setting to use. I have a 50 TLRC ("C" means 2004), and there are no other letters in the model name, so I'm guessing these E/M/EM models don't apply to 2004 models. Also, sometime around 2004, they started installing brass plugs over the pilot screw to meet emissions regs (can't have folks turning their 2-strokes into 2-smokes with bad carb settings...). The previous owner of my motor removed those plugs to gain access to the adjustment screws, so now I have no idea what they were originally set to. Thanks a lot for everything you do, and thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
I'm not sure this is 100% correct but the only reference I can find to that is for electric or manual start. EM being capable of both. I think if you follow the guidelines for a 50 on the adjustment screw you should be fine. Or am I not understanding your question?
Great video! I have C85TLRQ which doesn't return to idle after full throttle. With all carbs still linked it seems the return to idle springs don't seem to be doing their job. Can these be replaced? I have tried clean and lub with WD40.
Is there a rule if thumb with how far to screw both jets down once cleaned and ready to go back together mate? My 30hp 2 stroke idles fine, fine at low speed but shudders when going full throttle once it winds up top end is perfect at high speed no worries and only happens occasionally thinkn height i set the lower jet at may have this effect? Cheers from Aus
Great video, the float valve seat that didn't get removed should get removed and inspected there is an o ring under that valve seat that gets overlooked.
Fixed carbs.....Video was great. Just once it ran that's when I noticed lower unit leaking oil around prop. I tried to change oil seals and it was down hill from there. Broke my Prop Cap and could not line up gear shifter to go in neutral.........:( Update new Prop Cap and my prop shaft was bent. So $300 in parts haven't got rest of quote yet other than that. Any thoughts on what labor will be, and maybe any other parts for this repair?
Joe just came across your video, Well done, I just purchased a 97 4ohp and cleaned the carbs because the engine is not running well it starts but then dies. i found that the bottom carb does not have the emulsion tube under the main jet like the other two carbs have installed and wondering if this is the reason why it was not running properly. i ordered a new one and waiting for it to come but was wondering if you might know, or is that bottom carb not supposed to have one installed? looking forward to your response. thanks.
The bottom one definitely has an emulsion tube identical to the other tube. All three carbs are identical on the inside. I would be willing to bet that's why the engine is not running right! Good luck and hope it solves your problem!
Great video certainly gives me the confidence to give it a go - Was wondering if the idling screw on the 90HP 2stroke has the same amount of turns and when I pull off the three carbs do I need to replace the gaskets or could I get away without doing so? TIA
I think it would have a different setting for the idle screw. It is different between the 40 and the 50. I dont have a manual for the 90 though. I think as long as the gaskets are in good condition you can reuse them, I did on mine.
Great video. I have a question on the Idle Jet itself. What's the size of the main jet ? You give the size of the side holes / jets but not the middle. I have a 2004 50 Yamaha and all three Idle jets were plugged, but i need to get them to their correct size....Thanks !
I'm not sure, I was able to determine the size of the jets by measuring and trial an error but am not sure as to the mail jet. I would soak them in a string solvent to start.
It's great that I could watch a video of you cleaning your carbs and I could follow along and do mine at the same time. I have a 50 TLR and my carbs look about the same as yours. Any idea what the float height should be for the 50hp? It seemed like it was running rich with floats running parallel to the carb body at 12mm height
I’ve been looking for a good person to fix my engine for me for sum time now and I’m thinking of getting a new one I just need a needle valve I just can’t find it in st Lucia
Float height could cause the engine to flood or starve it of fuel if incorrect. I think either would cause it to bog down. You might want to clean the high speed jet as well.
great video, I'm following along on my 1985 ETLK 50 hp and I have something called a FLOAT PIN 676-14186-00-00 in my carb kit that Im stuck on, there wasn't one there when I took it apart, any ideas?
What an excellent video I rebuilt three carbs following you on my 1985 50 ETLK. when I took it for a ride the other day it ran excellent although it was idling high when I got back to the dock. I adjusted the pilot screw at 1.5 turns out because I don’t have a manual, would you happen to know what the proper adjustment should be?
So after your Link and Sync, and now a carb cleaning.. Did you get the yamaha 40 running correctly? I have the same motor, dealing with replacing and syncing a new CDI and carbs. But still having idling coughs, and limited peak rpms..
I have a 40hp 2 stroke the problem is that when it goes full throttle it dies,is it the tune??cause i bought a new fuel pump, what could be the problem or is it the tuning?

very funny that they put s cap on the idle jet but there is a passage from the main jet. that can feed fuel in the small area between the wall an the jet. Just like any other carb it should be free. no plug needed. if there is to much fuel while idling there always should be considered a smaller size or multiple sizes smaller jet. weird carb construction
It could be any number of different things I cant diagnose it but if the plugs are indeed black and loss of power could be the engine is running to rich.
Sorry, I only work on 2 stroke engines , at least for now. I'm guessing most of the newer four strokes (other than older Hondas) are probably fuel injected though. For the carb'ed one's the process should be fairly similiar.
Hands down the best step by step carb tutorial I have found. Thanks!

Hi what are those 3 little holes for? Mine were gunned up so bad, was covered by a gasket where yours aren't.
Those are part of the jet system for the carb and feed fuel into carb
Love your videos
It it safe to pull apart the automatic choke on the bottom carby
Yes, I would just be careful when doing so. Mine is on the middle carb though.
Greet video what if my pilot jet won’t just come out with a push of a finger how do I get that out?

What is the correct tune for fuel screw on yamaha 40hp.2 stroke
Hi, what are the tools need it to do the whole job, thanks
Really just your basic hand tools, screwdriver (flat and phillips) and a piece of .020 wire
Thanks I picked up some of that wire! Good idea.

Would it be advantageous to replace the idle screws when rebuilding carbs ?. I have the 2000, 30 hp Yamaha 3 carb setup .
Unless they are damaged then I don't really see the need to.
Does the drain screw in the bottom of the bowl have a rubber seal on it at all
It has a gasket
I have a 1995 70 horse TLRT, any idea what the fuel screw is supposed to be set at?
I would try to find a manual but without that, I would start at 1 and 1/2 and adjust from there,
In the hands of the boat shop...... wa wa waahhh.
Oh no! What happened?
What they find out about the oil leaking in your lower end?
Can’t you clean holes in the main jet just as well by directly spraying them with carb cleaner vs running a wire through them?
I've tried that but it doesn't seem to get is a good as the wire does.
So I have a 2006 Yamaha 50 TLR how do I know what model it is? M or E or? I need the info for my idle mixer needle.
My understanding is that e is electric start and m is manual start. Sounds goofy but I had the same question bugging me a few years ago.
I’ve been looking for a good person to fix my engine for me for sum time now and I’m thinking of getting a new one I just need a needle valve I just can’t find it in st Lucia
Can you order it from the U.S?
Would float height cause flooding and bogging down at high speed?
Float height could cause the engine to flood or starve it of fuel if incorrect. I think either would cause it to bog down. You might want to clean the high speed jet as well.

My carbs had a set idle mix with no adjustment. I would suggest that for a 50 you start at 1-1/4 open from fully seated and adjust from there.
very funny that they put s cap on the idle jet but there is a passage from the main jet. that can feed fuel in the small area between the wall an the jet. Just like any other carb it should be free. no plug needed. if there is to much fuel while idling there always should be considered a smaller size or multiple sizes smaller jet. weird carb construction
Does this translate to 70 HP?
I am not 100% certain but believe it does.
@@ExtremeDIYGuy just got mine done. Found a video on the 90 which is more similar.
Why is my plugs get black and loos power
It could be any number of different things I cant diagnose it but if the plugs are indeed black and loss of power could be the engine is running to rich.
How to clean four stroke
Sorry, I only work on 2 stroke engines , at least for now. I'm guessing most of the newer four strokes (other than older Hondas) are probably fuel injected though. For the carb'ed one's the process should be fairly similiar.
On my 30hp motor
I place the object in one of the hundreds of grocery bags we have here. Any spray gets capture din the bag and not my face.
Great tip, thanks!
Do the holes for the main jet need to face a certain way on reinstall or don’t matter
