    I have a nostalgic soft spot for the old ADV Films DVD, but the 4K remaster is the best one.

    ADV has the benefit of using the original International title cards. I'm a sucker for stuff like that and I firmly believe they need to be preserved as much as the original Japanese negatives amd the HD reconstructions of the American cuts.
    Also been loving the new 4K transfers Toho's been doing so far. Makes me hope they’ll let Criterion use them for an eventual re release.

      I definitely agree with you about the International and US versions of these films. I think that’s part of why I love the Tristar releases of the Showa, Heisei, and Millennium series films.

    Prefer the colour of the ADV, but the aspect ratio is distorted, and the 4K is crisp.

    The ADV dvd release I'll stay way from. When i first got it used from F.Y.E, I wasn't pleased that it lacked a proper menu. Besides, I considered the Media Blasters/Tokyo Shock DVD release to be an big improvement over ADV Films release.

    If they were to restore Godzilla Raids Again, do you think new elements would be used?

    • @UltraRiderGorizard
      @UltraRiderGorizard  4 месяца назад +2

      @@safeenentertainment8566 No. They can only create new elements if the original camera negatives exist. In the case of RAIDS AGAIN, I doubt the nitrate negative still exists. Criterion had to use a 1983 duplicate for their restoration, not new elements. You can only create a new transfer with old elements.

      @@UltraRiderGorizardOn an unrelated note, do you think the lack of quality exhibited in the series of 2008 “restorations” can be attributed to Toho’s indifference towards the franchise at that point of time (this was 4 years after the flop of Final Wars after all.)

    Have they announced more remasters?

    Once again, Criterion proves they are vastly overrated. What a horrible copy by them. It looks like they did nothing more than take the Toho DVD and convert it to Blu-ray LOL

      @@Dean302-vm6rv Criterion is not to blame, Toho is. Criterion were provided with the outdated ‘08 telecine scans that Toho used for the Hi-Vision broadcast and the Japanese BD’s. Toho did not make the 4K remasters available because Toho was still working on them. Criterion did the best with what they were given but there were still source limitations. This year, Criterion will finally release G54 on 4K UHD and the other 4K editions may soon follow.
      Honestly, Criterion’s versions are way better than Toho’s Blu-rays that heavily use DNR.

      @@UltraRiderGorizardThanks for the info. I still think the Criterion box set is trash, though.

      @@Dean302-vm6rv I don’t see how. Criterion’s Blu-rays are way better than Toho’s Blu-rays. Toho seems to hate film grain, so they applied noise reduction on all the Showa films’s Blu-rays and even the 4K editions.

      @@UltraRiderGorizard I'm talking about the entire package. I can't stand the artwork, the book, the disc storage, the white edit bursts on several movies, the lack of the English dubbed versions for most of the movies, and I felt they were lacking in new special features (not just rehashed ones from their Godzilla individual release).
      The Arrow Gamera box set is far more enjoyable as a whole.

    • @UltraRiderGorizard
      @UltraRiderGorizard  4 месяца назад +8

      @@Dean302-vm6rv Again, most of those issues are attributed to Toho rather than Criterion: Toho’s refusal to make the American dubs available, refusal to provide more special features, the white burst existing because of Toho’s insistence on scanning the films with a telecine, and providing Criterion with those same flawed telecine transfers. The storage space is not that big of an issue since each disc is 50GB/dual layered-enough to author 2-3 films (each 85-90 minutes) per disc without sacrificing quality and resolution. Arrow did this with their Showa Gamera release too.
      Tho I agree I’m not a fan of the psychedelic artwork, book-sized packaging, and disc sleeves.
