If you want to learn more about game design, the Extra Credits channel has a bunch of great aspects about all sorts of aspects of game design. Crash Course's description of the first Mario level reminded me of Extra Credits's look at it (in Design Club).
Linnaeus' four principles of dice game design: 1) Downtime is the enemy 3:23 2) No more than one roll per turn 3:43 3) Give players a chance to react to the dice 3:58 4) Low rolls should not suck, high rolls should not rule 4:10
Indie game dev here. Just wanted to pipe in and say that this video was really well presented and covered the introductory ideas with remarkable clarity and succinctness for its short length. Great job! Especially enjoyed the nod to Miyamoto's design philosophy. I highly recommend players to check out Super Mario 3D World if they want to see the pinnacle of that kind of design. If you're interested in game design, that game is better than any game design course you could take at a college or university.
can you do more videos about the design, programming, tools and steps to building games? if you can use the history of gaming to support these topics, you will have an amazing series!
When this one was released, I finally thought it was going to get into a course about how games are actually made, and its theories on design, balance, storytelling, philosophy, etc...
Wow, great episode. I missed it at first, glad I came back. Many good points made. Something similar is also why I don't consider trivia "board" games as games really.
This is a great channel and my favorite topic here! Andre is AWESOME! I would like to request you discuss something of how 'story' is incorporated into game design.
fun mario fact: that hidden 1up in 1-1 is placed so that if the player jumps too early to get over the hole the box gets triggered. Meaning someone who may be having difficulty gauging speed/distances gets more tries without a game over.
YESSSSSSS! Finally, the next episode will be on the Master Race! But frankly, it really deserves like five episodes if we're being honest. And no, I'm not being a fanboy, the industry really is that broad. We could take but hardware, software, games, all sorts of stuff. And maybe the crazy, new Acer Predator 21X.
if you like these videos check out extra credits. the channel covers a lot of game design concepts in more depth, by people who have experience in the industry. loads of fun! :)
Yep. It is generally best to have the first level be the last one you design. Or be the level you worked on the most. It the level after all that needs to grab the attention of the play. Doom was the same in this regard. And you can see this principle in a lot of games. That is why the first level may seen so much more polished and detailed in games.
pretty awesome. there's other examples like smb3, how the disposition off the coins and the music teaches how to run and fly with no prompts and tutorials
Well, there definitely should be a Crash Course Geography. That one should be hosted by John Green as that would be more of the socio-cultural aspects. What I meant was Earth Science which would be a combination of geology, meteorology and environmental sciences.
In Slender: The Eight Pages, you don't win. Your objective? Collect the Eight pages while avoiding the Slenderman. You never win in the game. Do nothing? He gets you. Spend too long looking for pages? He gets you. Get all the pages? He gets you. You never win.
I know time is a constraint - that being said … I'd've loved to see some discussion about "organically" designed games like chess and go. Also, sandbox games ala minecraft, experimental games, art-games ala Mountain, etc. Oh boy. You could probably make a whole semester out of game desig- wait, that's exactly what a intro game design course would be. I should go back to school
Game Design is my passion and is eventually what I want to do as a full time job. Equally Programming is fun but equally challenging. Art well let's not talk about that ;)
If anyone is interested in hearing designers talk about board game design, check out the podcast Ludology with Mike Fitzgerald and Geoff Engelstein. Each episode focuses on an aspect of game design and features industry members as guests.
I'm sorry. I hope that you'll... for lack of a more appropriate wish, be okay as soon as possible...? Whatever that may be for you... I know that it's not that simple, of course, and I don't know the specifics of your situation but I do want to send you my best wishes. You deserve better than the way you feel now and I hope that you'll find that soon.
lol this video was uploaded a minute ago, the video is ten minutes long, there are 4 dislikes, I see ya trolls. xD there's also 6 likes if ya'll are curious.
Am I the only one who paused the video to look at the code 0:58 ? It's kinda spooky that I know what it's actually doing. And yes, that definitely looks like game code.
Half-life 2 does not still hold up, at all. It's shooting mechanics were dated even during its initial release. Portal would have been a better example.
The reason it holds up is because of Differences In Kind. If you were just shooting marines with an AK-47 every map, it wouldn't be nearly as replayable.
The best games aren't the ones that you want to play all the time, they are the ones that you play once and then don't want to play them again because they are so goddamn perfect and you don't wanna get all the feels again
So true! FFX, Chrono Cross, RE3... These are the games that I don't want to revisit, just so I can retain the wonderful memories of experiencing them at that time, in those circumstances.
ThePSXHive exactly. For me it's Gone Home, Transistor and The Last of Us, maybe inFamous First Light and Second Son as they basically fit who I really wanna be.

One of my all-time favorite episode of one of my all-time favorite RUclips channel's best shows! Great work. ☺
When this one was released, I finally thought it was going to get into a course about how games are actually made, and its theories on design, balance, storytelling, philosophy, etc...

Niantic should take notes...
I feel a lot of game companies need to take notes, especially MMOs
+Kevin Li yes MMOs need to stop reskining WOW
yeah mmo these days are the same old wow type game
Yes, they should look at pokemon is a good example of how to do it right
Niantic does NOT make games.
Pokemon GO is not a game. There is no win scenario = There is no game.
fun mario fact: that hidden 1up in 1-1 is placed so that if the player jumps too early to get over the hole the box gets triggered. Meaning someone who may be having difficulty gauging speed/distances gets more tries without a game over.
Andre Meadows, I loved your sires so much that I binged watched the whole thing in one sitting. Please do an episode on Sid Meier, and Strategy games.
"Never alone" is so cool! Up there with great games like Bastion and Apotheon :D
The Marc Leblanc part scared me. Thought it was Joey...😂
This one of the best episode of the series!!
YESSSSSSS! Finally, the next episode will be on the Master Race! But frankly, it really deserves like five episodes if we're being honest. Please talk about dwarf fortress and how games can tell stories.
Strike the earth!
Video games are fun
Best episode so far!
"Downtime is the enemy"
"No re-rolls allowed"
Sounds like Mr. Cameron hasn't paid much attention to Warhammer Fantasy or 40k :P
Great video as always though. I especially like the bit with the first level of Mario :)
Thanks Mike Hunt!
I highly recommend you try love letter. It is such an elegant game.
if you liked this and you want to learn about it some more go check out extra credits
wow.. this was a great episode! ..and is not just the wine talking
Cool explanation about Super Mario. Never thought that way about the game.
pretty awesome. there's other examples like smb3, how the disposition off the coins and the music teaches how to run and fly with no prompts and tutorials
Extra credits made a video about it as well
This is such an interesting channel. Well done Crash Course.
We are in a real pandemic now
Great review especially 5:20.
This was a good introductory video to the topic.
Id like to see you guys try and tackle different genres in video games.
I carry around Love Letter (Batman ed.) to gatherings to hook people in to table top games often xD best intro game evarrr
Princess love letter sounds like a good game. Easy to learn long time to master.
Crash course sociology please!!!!
I thought you said "Crash Course Scientology" for a moment XD
Yes! Crash Course Sociology and Crash Course Earth Science!
+Renfro1982 Soo... Geography?
Well, there definitely should be a Crash Course Geography. That one should be hosted by John Green as that would be more of the socio-cultural aspects.
What I meant was Earth Science which would be a combination of geology, meteorology and environmental sciences.
+Sebastian Carrier Everyone always thinks that lol
I love Mike Hunt!
Andre black nerd now works with crashcourse? aweosme!
In Slender: The Eight Pages, you don't win. Your objective? Collect the Eight pages while avoiding the Slenderman. You never win in the game. Do nothing? He gets you. Spend too long looking for pages? He gets you. Get all the pages? He gets you. You never win.
Imma save this one for reference on designing a game

Hooray, there actually will be an episode on PC gaming.
Great Video!😀
Game Design is my passion and is eventually what I want to do as a full time job. Equally Programming is fun but equally challenging. Art well let's not talk about that ;)
mike hunt must be so proud. i certainly would be with that name.
If anyone is interested in hearing designers talk about board game design, check out the podcast Ludology with Mike Fitzgerald and Geoff Engelstein. Each episode focuses on an aspect of game design and features industry members as guests.
Great video! I am thinking of getting into Game Design and this video gives a nice overview! :)
I have to give credit to Andre or whoever set up the tetris pieces for being 10 units wide. ;)
GameDev Student here :)
I love the intro
Anyone who's interested in video game design should check out Extra Credits - they make great videos on the topic.
To catch them is my real test to train them is my cause.
They need to do a course on psychology that would be interesting. Anyone else want to see that?
CrashCourse is like the PBS of the internet.
"It's me... Yamoto!!!"
omg dad joke.
Woah that was a lot of information, nice work.
Please do a Sociology and an Art History crash course!!!!
whoa...nice series
2:43 Mods are, in a way, the house rules of video games.
I have crippling depression
If so, I hope you find help. I struggle with manic/depression and would trade anything for it to go away. All the best...
Meme
I'm sorry. I hope that you'll... for lack of a more appropriate wish, be okay as soon as possible...? Whatever that may be for you... +PowerMindAlchemist You guys don't get what he's saying do you?
Guys, he doesn't actually suffer from depression... It's a meme

FINALLY YOU MENTION HALF LIFE!
Am I the only one who paused the video to look at the code 0:58 ? It's kinda spooky that I know what it's actually doing. And yes, that definitely looks like game code.
Half-life 2 does not still hold up, at all. It's shooting mechanics were dated even during its initial release.
Portal would have been a better example.
there is nothing wrong with Half life 2 shooting mechanics... its still hold up due to its story and its ground breaking physics engine
The reason it holds up is because of Differences In Kind. If you were just shooting marines with an AK-47 every map, it wouldn't be nearly as replayable.
In what way were the shooting mechanics outdated?
Very well done. +1UP
Really cool video, goes wayyyyy to fast to learn in one go
Games need to tell good stories like they used to back when FFVII was still around. Stories that connect with players emotionally.
Love letter!
6:23 Yes!!!!
The best games aren't the ones that you want to play all the time, they are the ones that you play once and then don't want to play them again because they are so goddamn perfect and you don't wanna get all the feels again
IKR? The best kind of game is one where you want to play it for the first time again and feel all the twists and turns of the plot.
True! For me that was resident Evil 4, dead space, fallout 3... And FF7
+Bartosz Olszewski mine is probably furi, undertale, and portal
Toby Fox did a great job.
Can you please please please do a crash course on each book in George Orwells 1984?
I'd love to hear somthing about Indie Titles
Dark Souls 1 - Best design out there, in ALL level
I'd imagine Andre is a fan of extra credits.
The goombas always get me.
I love the fact that they left out how hard game design is.
MASTER RACE NEXT!!
At camp, this one guy played Love Letter to make friends and uh bad memories
What do you think about Dwarf Fotress as it currently is, in terms of game design?
I love the background with sonic and the fallout........boy btw I'm on Xbox one agile banana
will we ever get an episode on RTS and Mobas?
I know how it feels when a game is to short and it leaves you wanting more (Smallworld)
"Be the very best, like no one ever was" Poor Ash...
Eight kinds of fun?
Eight pages of Death?
No Man's Sky dev should watch this.
Vice-Principle Michael Hunt. That's first name Mike, second name Hunt. Mike Hunt anyone?
About the four rules... Talk to Mathhammer...
out of every video I've seen of this I never anything about warhammer. And most of the dice rules sent followed in it
I've never watched this version before
Nowadays, I bet getting killed by that Goomba would be considered unfair.
Goomba will kill Andre cuz his glasses Goomba knows.
Shout-out facebook.com/grisgame/?fref=nf for their nice game design which is slowly but surely taking shape.
i just wish sean murray would have taken some notes on game design.
why isn't this one on the playlist?
i have never played love letter but there is a fairly similar game called coup
Are you going to do a collab with Extra Credits?
@CrashCourse This Part is missing from the Playlist.
Vice President Micheal Hunt 😂
I was going to be missed if half life wasn't mentioned... then it was mentioned 5 second into the video... thank u
