Welcome to our first episode where Glenn Tierney tells about highlights from his incredible logbook and aviation career. Tierney was a fighter pilot and a naval aviator. Some of the aircraft he flew include the Vought F4U Corsair, Grumman F8F Bearcat, Grumman F9F Cougar, Douglas F3D Skyknight, North American F-100, Lockheed F-104, and even the Grumman F-14 Tomcat! Truly a legendary logbook.
Hear his story as we interview this WWII fighter pilot and famous test pilot about his combat experiences, shooting an early sidewinder missiles and downing the first aircraft with it (QF-80), and his experiences flying and testing some of the world's most iconic aircraft.
Some of the many accomplishments of this real-life Top Gun Maverick include:
-Disabling a German Submarine (U-boat) with a Vought F4U Corsair that only was armed with machine guns.
-Flying over 30 different types of fighter aircraft.
    -Survived Aircraft Carrier Helicopter Crash
-Serving in World War Two and the Korean War.
    -Top Gunner of his Squadron.
-Test Pilot at China Lake (Naval Air Weapons Station (NAWS) China Lake).
-Being the first pilot to shoot down a drone (Lockheed QF-80) with a sidewinder missile since he was part of the test program.
-Recovering from a severe state of hypoxia while flying the F-100 and returning to base on minimum fuel.
-Flying all of the Grumman Cats (from FM-2 Wildcat to the F-14 Tomcat).
    -USS Midway Museum Volunteer.

I remember all these stories from my childhood...you see Glenn A Tierney is my Step-father! He is going to be 99 this summer! He a legend from the Greatest Generation. I have flown most of the planes he has flown on War Thunder, nothing compared to what he experienced.

We owe them so much. It doesn’t feel like enough to say, “I am grateful for his service.”
He leaves an Ivy League scholarship and possible scholarship to Annapolis and says, “A perfectly good war going on” and at 18 he wanted to play his part.
It is fascinating to hear him.
      Truly the Greatest Generation.

What an incredible life and interesting career this Man made for himself.
26:50 Almost a coincidence? I was just yesterday reading the Wikipedia article on HVAR rockets, how they were also used for heat-seeker missile targets. Firing the WWII era HVAR 5" rocket, then acquiring the target lock on its exhaust flame, which was enhanced for this purpose, and firing a sidewinder. Interesting details.
Btw: Greg sent Me here. His channel is the best, yours is shaping up to be a classic too. Keep it up!

JJ, thanks for sharing. We appreciate your kind remarks. While we don't have Greg's insane knowledge, we figured one of the ways we can meaningfully contribute is to give then men who were there a chance to tell the stories themselves. : ) We have already recorded seven more interviews and are excited to release them in 2023.
