My grandfather bred these way back in the 1930s with stock obtained from the British Isles..In his diaries he clearly stated that mortality rates where high not due to predators but once the crazy ones started to perform..they just had no control to stop.
Bruh it's a terrible sport, the pigeons aren't "performing", all pigeons can tumble, its a neurological problem that can be deadly if they hit something or if as you said it doesn't stop. However what are are doing is selectively breeding the ones with the worst case thus creating a breed of pigeons that all roll excessively, basically inbred retarded pigeons for our amusement
My son today asked me what my favourite animal is and was shocked when I said it was a type of pigeon. I’ve kept dogs cats reptiles goats pigs chickens of all types and nothing comes remotely close to these birds. God I love Birmingham rollers
One year ago, a beautiful, almost all white pigeon moved into our barn. We set up a food and water station for her. The first time we saw her fly, we thought there was something wrong with her. Since then, we did some research and found out that she is a roller. We love our 'wild' bird.
@@BartCoppens Nothing wrong or nor any defect. Its totaly natural and genetical. There's a university in USA which did a long research on rollers and tumblers and found out that its absolutely 100% natural. And some pigeons also learn from other rollers by seeing them rolling.
I showed my friend a photo of this pidgeon I saw on the roof opposite my house, it had a big tail and puffy chest. It's a tumbler pidgeon. I havent seen it tumble yet, I think it must be someones pet that has escaped.
silo13 I use to have a roller with a flock of high-fliers he use to roll and then catch back up with the high flighers. So high that I would loose sight of where the flock was. Also let that roller go from seaside and it made it back to union city 2 days later. It was probably about 110 miles. I thought I lost him. My next door neighbor like 10 years later told me he was sorry that he was the one that accidentally shot it with a Bebe gun.
Darwin called them "tumbler" pigeons, and it is believed they figured greatly into his theory of natural selection... as they were a perfect apposition... artificial selection at its finest. Awesome! Thank you so much for posting this!
This was a stroll down memory lane, however even 6 years after my posting I still enjoyed the slow motion in motion, where spin flaws and variation can be closely examined, but the impact of it for me is still impressive, alongside the sound track too.
To those saying 'sloppy junk', all rollers will look sloppy when the film is played back in slow motion like this. Most roller vids are rubbish, but this is quality filming and is slowed to show what actually happens when they roll. It is plain to see that some are rolling straighter than others, but I bet they look better when played back at normal speed.

Fun fact: The birds are bred so its muscles bend the wrong way and messes up balance, which makes it so it can't fly, which scares it and pigeons have the instinct to fly when startled, which in turn puts it in a constant loop of panic and flipping because it can't fly right. Totally unethical.
@@AMOKOSCISIAMuscles don't "bend", they contract and relax. So where on a roller are these muscles that generate this action? I'm curious to know. Thanks!
I just found out this species of pigeon existed a few minutes ago. Listening to “Snap Judgement’s Halloween Special: Spooked” on NPR (93.9), and the guy in one of the stories talked about them
Wow, this is so beautiful. I love seeing such cute creatures scramble around in the air, due to a specifically bred neurological disability, like a bettle on its back. There is only one thing I love more than that though, and that is my little "humans with troyer syndrome" collection in my basement. Sometimes when I get bored I like to throw them into the pool in my backyard and watch them dance around, while listening to some mozard :)
I have been quite a vivid birder from when I was young after working in the Kruger National park for 8months like 8 years ago and only yesterday did my friends dad point them out to me. Was the craziest thing cant believe I have never noticed them before.

Hawks got a couple of my birds, one a wonderful kit leader! Sigh! They say they 'learned' to roll to escape predators, LOL! When pursued by the hawk or other raptor they suddenly drop 20 ft. down, and the hawk has to go back, wheel, and turn etc ! It works pretty good too, so most often they are safe!
An uncle across the street had a bunch of these or very similar ones. Would look like they glitch out every now and then was crazy to watch. R.I.P uncle🤙🏼
great video !!! the real view in the sky is totaly different, the roll of these birds is so fast that almost every camcorder has not enough framerate to exactly show what happens, if you film at normal speed it misses to many frames to have the roll on film, and at slow motion it looks a bit sloppy, also the angle of the bird towards the eye or the camera can make a huge difference, the fastest rollers look like a donut when the angle is right. i have birminghamrollers myselve, almost all my life, after moving to an other home i sold all of them, had to rebuild my home, build a new pigeonhouse all that took some years, i had to restart with new birds, but it was a struggle to find good birds to start with, it took me 3 years of breeding to find out that i did not have gotten great performing birds, some wont fly , or did not form a kit, or they just did not roll at all. i almost quit,,,,,but now i started all over again, i have 10 young birds that form a kit and 6 good breeder parents, . the joy when my ten birds are flying in a kit is so fantastic. they are already tailriding , learning to roll,,, in the next months they start to rol. we own the sky again !!!! the best way to start is with fresh bred young birds, older birds are almost always lost , they always want to find there birdplace , even after monts of caging. but they are not race pigeons and get lost.
one of my female rollers lost control today and rolled around 200 ft. all the way to the ground. She is still alive but beat up pretty bad.hope she lives , never will I fly her again
My landlord told me just go to the beach there are plenty. My boss wouldn't let me keep any of his. Before the pandemic someone donated me my dove, Sebastian. I really recommended you catch some and bring to home. Or by the baby, hand feed. Once you let them fly they come back to the roost.

I think they are falling not somersaulting although that is the effect of the fall.
