Why U.S. combat troops don't use ballistic shields

A ballistic shield loses its edge on a battlefield - and more so against an unconventional foe. Ballistic shields are carried by police forces to stop or deflect bullets.
They make sense when establishing a perimeter, approaching a high risk subject, or as a personal shield in a defensive situation. They don’t, however, make sense for US troops in combat. Here’s why.

To be fair, I’ve noticed a lot of special forces units across the globe starting to use shields in urban warfare to pretty good effect, and there are also rifle rated shields that don’t need a back harness or even 2 hands to use. When shields become advanced enough to be light enough as well for any situation, I hope people are smart and adopt it again and not just cling to old ideas of “badassery” like “it’s better to dodge a bullet than to stop one” because while that might be fine and dandy now, that train of thought may not always be valid.
In all fairness, we only dodge bullets as we have flesh suits that cannot regularly take bullets well.
@@davidmartin9225 hence, armor
Nothing old about dodging a bullet than blocking it both are equally valid.
Special Forces are a bunch of Kamikaze troops, when you see guys wearing Hawaian Tropical t shirts, and sorta of Trunks and Flip Flops,or Cowboy Hats, let this people alone on the battlefield, they arent real soldiers......
It makes sense if their target is in a building.
BS!I was 11 M INF and we used to always talk about having shields! If you’re not on the ground you know nothing. There are many ways to make a shield comfortable, light and functional .It doesn’t take a rocket scientist. We came up with many ergonomic designs. And I still think about it once in a while now.
I agree I would prefer a shield over trying to dodge a bullet/ This woman is nuts
Yup, a high end new age 3 shield can weigh 5-6 pounds. Totally need one.
@@MobileAura you definitely wouldn't need a 3-5lb shield if you were creative and knew how to create efficient carrying designs. And you wouldn't need to sacrifice your rifle either
There are experiments for folding shields, land drones probably can carry thick heavy shield if the battery issue is solved.
Easy to say no to shields because of "convenience" when your not the one being shot at...
Its also heavy af and makes you more likely to get shot from directions other than the front. That said, with the New vest mounted over the shoulder cables they use to help carry the weight our troops do now use shields when entering an area where they are fairly certain that all hostiles will be in front of them.
@@royalblueyt5182 why not curve the shields and mount them on wheels?
And don't say grenades either because there are already ways to deal with that as shown by the FSB.
@@lawrencemorris2261 wheel mounted shields was the old method, they were practical for running up to a doorway with cover but usually got left at the doorway because they couldn't quickly turn direction. The harness system they use now lets the operator move sideways and cut corners.
@@royalblueyt5182 I mean yeah but just so you know there are plenty of ways to design the shield that could allow it to turn quickly. Rough and inclined terrain issues can be solved as well.

You think you could DODGE a bullet? This isn’t the Matrix
Shields have their uses. As an infantryman, its not always possible to leap and bound across several hundred meters at lightning speed across uneven terrain. Having a shield deployed at the right time against entrenched enemies can keep you alive long enough for your buddies to flank them. I'd prefer a shield to carrying armor plates all mission.
WHOA I didn't know you could dodge a bullet. it's that easy
Lmao fax
Most of the shields you shown werent even balistic, they were riot shields to block people and strikes.
I met a NASA police officer....they have the most awesome challenge coins ever!!!
Seeing as NASA is mostly private, it's incorrect to call them "police officers"
More like "private security" or Contractors. I worked for a company that guarded POA & DOE sites, guards at those sites had right to detain which is different from arrest, though they were given authority to shoot seeing as those are High Risk Targets for terrorists. I don't think anybody but nerds gives a flip about NASA to actually need that kinda security force
@@MrSniperdude01 true...the protective services are essentially security guards not sworn police officers but they usually work in tandem with sworn LR and military police in some cases.
Here in my state for example we have the test site aka area 51 which is protected by multiple layers of security including highway patrol on the outside of the invisible fence line, uniformed security at gates, MSOs which are state security officers, private security contractors and of course the military. How do I know? Let's just say....my friend retired from both the test site and NHP and knows both worlds well.

Hey I always watch your channel. Funny seeing you here sliding into DMs haha
You either level up defense to reduce a % of the damage, or level agility to evade the full damage.
Maybe one day they can level up the tech skill enough to unlock the perk that allows creation of shields that do not reduce agility.
I'm sorry but if the used this on D-day, say what you want but it would have saved thousands of lives!
D-Day was a cluster of mistakes where German barrels likely had to melt to lower the mass killing of our guys. Monday morning Quarterbacking, I ponder our bombers should have set the beach hills on fire hours before.
You do realize that there are relatively, light weight (9lbs) level 3 ballistic shields.
Not exactly true. Navy Interdiction Teams use them. MP SRT/SWAT also do, obviously. But I'm pulling hairs at this point.
Sandra Long the Marines use them.and in urban areas the is army does use them aswell

Wrong see in ww2 they took half track doors and turned them into shield. So it's semi realistic
Military police use them
Shields do have a place in CQB and open space engagement but the application for LE vs MIL is different. LE conduct many slow approaches while trying to negotiate (with civs) and rescue downed civilians while the MIL would fire and maneuver and probably not negotiate with enemy (not civs) unless there were hostages. If mounted and used correctly, I think it could have great benefit to an infantry squad and there are many companies who make rifle rated shields.
what companie s do?
But Russian special forces (Spetsnaz) , even tier 1, like Alpha and Vympel use balistic shields. So why?
I know im late but the reason why the army doesnt use the shield but the special forces do is because special forces usually fight in CQC or CQB circumstances, so low cal guns are more commonly used so using a shield their is actually a viable strategy.
If that’s the case then wouldn’t ballistic shields be some used in urban combat why won’t stop a sniper it could help when trying to take over the house invite additional cover
@Daniel Wong Will just keep them in the personal Carriers as well as certain vehicles
I think it’s dependent on the mission. If you’re at longer ranges like the foothills of Afghanistan then obviously it’s not going to make sense. However if you’re a door kicker in a tight CQB scenario in the busy business sector of modernized Iraq and Africa then it would make sense to clear with a concussion grenade and lead with a level III or IV shield
Battle Steel has a level III shield that weighs 24 lbs for ~$1000. It is rated up to 7.62×51.
On another note, I've noticed that nobody seems to account for distance. Defensive armor is tested at close range and could protect against even higher threats at long distance. A shield rated level III might save you from a .50 bmg at 2000+ yards. For perspective, at that distance the .50 BMG energy is roughly the same as a .308 at close range.
Likewise, even level IIIA armor can stop rifle rounds at long distances (although probably not .50 bmg). Level IIIA armor is rated to stop a .44 magnum pistol. I made a quick check through the Vortex Ballistics Calculator and a .308 at 400 yards has about the same energy as a .44 magnum pistol at close range.
Of course energy numbers don't tell the full story (momentum, ballistics, etc) but you can see that rifle rounds lose a lot of power at long distances and this enhances the real protective power of defensive armor.
I could bet that pistol rated IIIA armor can stop most rifle rounds at 500 yards, and give you a survival advantage at even closer distances.
Level III armor is rated up to 7.62x51 (roughly equal to .308 WIN) and can probably protect against even higher power rifles at long distances. Like I said before, it might even stop .50 BMG at 2000 yards.
what's the best rifle rated shield civilians can buy?
@@wcsdiaries Level IV, which is rated to stop .30 cal armor piercing bullets.
However, I should add a disclaimer that not all civilians can buy ballistic armor and it depends on your local laws and regulations, as well as your financial situation.
@@robinlehnerd1475 where does one get a level iv shield? Do you have a link?
With drones being used a lot more I suspect we'll more and more innovation on the shield front.
To think, modern troops don't carry shields for weight, but past soldiers and even knights with full suits of metal and leather armor, with shields included, had lighter gear overall.
Troops coming off of landing craft probably would have appreciated a shield, something to shield the vital area of centre of mass. Would have provided cover on the beach where there was no cover.
Only the guy in front needs a huge shield.
I love yalls terminology! Not calling every warrior a soldier is such a turn on. And it shows yall legit know what yall are talking about.
Nobody asked for every soldier carry a ballistic shield but maybe combat medics in each platoon needed to carry one in case of retrieving a wounded soldier under fire
Remember those three marines who killed heroically in Fallujah by Iraqi insurgent sniper they could be saved maybe with a smoke grenade and a ballistic shield
It depends on what kind of caliber is being used by an enemy.
If it is lower caliber like in some ambushes and close quarters then a shield can help. If caliber is high then most shields are pretty much dead weight.
Unless we make shields that can stand higher caliber rounds.
@@TheUnseenPaththere's level 3 shields that weigh 10kg. That's pretty good mixture of protection and mobility, which also is a form of protection
Uhh,, I get what their point is, ‘get to cover’, but I prefer the IDEA of blocking a bullet vs being on a bullet field and ordered to ‘dodge bullets.’
Well, effective use of cover is the real answer but sure we can go with what you're saying in this video.
What about master chief’s mark 6 armor ?
Spartan II armor can hold and carry its own weight due to it being Power Armor.
What if each squadron have a guy with a shield who would be in front, I think it would be useful for infantry in irregular warfare. If there is any veteran here tell me if this is a good idea.
Tfw you forget the various branches of the military each have their own law enforcement personnel trained to use riot gear, including ballistic sheilds.
Meanwhile, Russian and French internal military police are using ballistic shields
Unless your in the skylands realm where we use a balistic shield that can withstand high caliber rounds. Wenused those when we attacked the enemie's fortress in a testudo type of formation, it worked very well and sincenthe slayers didn't have any mines or anything until much later, getting through their machine guns and blowing up the fortress walls was usually an easy task. Until we get pinned down and have to call air support to get the MG's off of us. We sometimes had to dig trenches to avoid incoming fire. The testudos usually worked until someone lost theit footing, fell and dropped the shield and everyone behind him was turned into groundmeat.

Incidentally, they do wear ceramic body armor, and it's not rated IIIA, it's rated level IV against rifle threats (including the helmet)
In the field, going prone does more than a shield or body armor will, but it's still an interesting idea for interior combat....the question is how do you get it there when you're in the field. Mobility isn't going to save you if you're walking in a doorway, a level 3 rated shield for the first guy in the door would probably do the same thing it does for SWAT.
then why does the spetsnaz use it then?
This lady seems to think we are handcuffed to the shield. When it is no longer useful, toss it away. Recover it later.
They do use ballistic shields on the battlefield. They use them in breaching.
There is so much wrong with this video - just "oh it's heavy", "armour piercing rounds" and an explosive device will blah blah. If you have people using periscopes to see without being shot then there are cases when you can use a shield to see or move in a difficult location. It could be part of deploying at a trench warfare slow advance. If what you say makes sense then apc should not have armoured windows, why bother bullets will just rip through - but nope. They have bulletproof glass and it does stop a lot of rounds. Rounds which are NOT all armor piercing. If people know what kind of ammo they are fighting they could strategically decide to use or not use shields.
This is almost like asking why we don’t use tanks in an indoor situation.
Shields do not lose their edge in combat considering they were used in warfare for thousands of years.
For me it’s simply because that it is too heavy and takes up too much space and it barely functions well in the environment that troops work in. Keep in mind, this is a rifle rated shields which means that they are heavier than the ones that swats carries for normal missions but due to being able to withstand rifle firings it is way heavier. Another thing is that the environment us troops work in are normally open areas which means that shields can be countered from various angles. However, in a closed area like a building it gets useful but those situations barely happened outside so yeah
I am not in the least convinced. This is a classic example of resistance to change in the military. Repeating rifles, aircraft carriers, drones, and aircraft were resisted by the "experts" in their time. Shields can serve and serve well once you get past the emotional resistance, it is just when and how to deploy them and carry them in the logistic stream are the questions to be answered. "Just one more thing for soldiers to carry"..just how far do soldiers march nowadays and who says they have to carry the shields to the battlefield? Of course, soldiers lives are secondary to the bosses.
That's why you get a level III under 12lbs. Correct. Level IIIA won't stop rifle rounds.
They don't help with us troups in combat" -shows a video of British troups
i feel like shields might be useful in house-to-house fighting, or urban combat
Simple. It’s called cost.
Russia has some awesome shields but the amount of them being used are small quantities but are rather effective in stopping almost everything but a rocket.
Their vest and helmets are rated to stop rifle rounds
Shields have a use in military u were talking about a battel field but in cqb room cealring senario they are use the same way. Also riots military is not just for fighting in battels
Last time I checked AK-47 don’t shoot armor piercing bullets
You don't need body armor when you have patriotism. Just think Darth Vader when he says "I find your lack of faith disturbing" or " the force will sustain me" but just replace it with patriotism like " I find your lack of patriotism disturbing" or " my patriotism sustains me"
makes more sense to use a tank or armored car for cover.
Montagne just doesn't care at all.
Tactical shield is very important in modern warfare. Soldier can reposition themself and flank enemies
They don’t stop the bullets of AK-47s. Body armor does not stop it either.
Imagine if on the beaches of Normandy the American's had a sheild, I'd bet they use it. Great way to cover and move.
"Its easier to dodge a bullet than to block it" -stoopid
I guess it is cheaper to conduct war without shield for everyone.
Well if they did have ballistic shields, advancing in machine gun and rifle fire might be a little easier, form a shield wall and stick rifles through the gaps, there you go a slaughter of enemies, though rockets and grenades would cause them problems
Ak47 7.62x39 isn’t a high power caliber
For an automatic hand held weapon that is a high caliber.
They would use them if they were issued, most are designed for police/swat but if someone spent time to develop one that could withstand 7.62 then they would be very useful when getting a medic to an injured soldier!
Buying those calendars was money well spent, Plus sending money to vets
I don't care any ballistic rated barrier I can place between us an the enemy is going to help me save lives an reach wounded that's life saving equipment right there.
Pretty sure clearing rooms in warzones would greatly benifit
Ap rounds cut through standard ballistics. Here's what I want to know... why don't heavy weapon mounts on vehicles have gun shields? Like we did in ww2 and they saved lives so why not now? Gonna tell me ap rounds go through ar 500 steel?
I feel like in each little military unit there should be like 30 heavily armed troops and have medical troops for them and AC troops carrying light weight ac systems for the armored troops.
Because a low stone wall is just as effective and you don’t have to carry it with you to not have the quartermaster tear you a new one for losing an expensive piece of equipment.
Not everyone has armor piercing bullets. Some bad guys are still using bolt action rifles. The shield could act as a dissipation of kinetic energy. The way we put cage armor on strykers. To dissipate a rpg hit.
Since when is it easier to dodge a bullet ...Not everybody is a comic book character like the one
First it's Damn heavy. Second it can only be used in Raids such as Hostage Situations, Arrest scenarios and other CQB sorties. Besides, today's Soldiers are carrying Guns and Ammo. And Third High Caliber Bullets can easily Penetrate. The only Protection a Soldier needs is to Find a Solid Place to Hide and Shoot Back.
Stopped watching at 1:59
Simple, it's too damn heavy and too much shit can shoot through it. Every pound a soldier matters, because you are gonna be trekking miles with all that shit on. The more pounds you add, the more painful the trek. Not to mention it just doesn't fit with the dynamic of current squad maneuvers and training, which is based around mobility. If a soldier wants shielding, they'll just use the environment. No one wants a shield.
What if the shield wasn't heavy and wasn't easily pierced?
Did you think about that possibility even a little bit?
Technology advances all the time so I don't see why people like you are so pessimistic in this regard...and its especially easy for people to say no to new things that actually protect soldiers when its not them being fired at.
I really don't think you understand what you are talking about. At all. You can also play the 'what if' game all day long but the fact of the matter is that there no shields in existence that can effectively protect a soldier without being absurdly heavy. There are no materials to make a shield that effective without making it absurdly heavy. A soldier who is using a shield cannot use a rifle, which means he cannot kill or provide suppressing fire, which makes him useless to his squad.
A shield isn't very useful in most combat scenarios. Open fields, street to street, jungle warfare, or in mountain terrain a shield isn't nearly as useful as a rifle or machine gun. Its only useful in very close CQB when clearing a room in a building, and again, thats when it needs an absurd amount of material to be effective. Its point blank range, most rifles can shoot through just about anything at point blank range. And none of that takes into account explosive weapons like grenades or RPGs.
Shields also aren't accounted for in any military infantry doctrine, which means they'd have to redo every single squad tactic and invent new strategies just to accommodate this one piece of gear.
Or let me put it this way, if the technology came around to make a shield strong enough to easily resist an AK and could be made into a shield thats very light, when why not simply use that technology for body armor instead? That way the soldier can still use any weapon he needs to and can still rely on all his formal training.
And taking cover with either man-made or natural barriers.
It would’ve been really useful in Falluja
We dont need them, we are light fighting, fast moving. If you are fighting against a swat unit using a shield, take out their legs and watch that unit fall apart.

There's Shields that stop low Caliber (Pistol Rounds/SMG Rounds) that weigh 15 Pounds! There's also shields that stop Conventional 5.56 and 7.62x39 Rounds (Which of course weigh more to around 25-35 Pounds) But I've seen shields that weigh just the same as the Conventional 5.56 and 7.62x39 that stop AP ammo and even 308 and surprisingly Lapua Rounds depending on the manufacturer. I understand the concept of needing to weigh the least as possible but the weight that is being assumed seems to me outrageous. Also I would agree that US Military wouldn't use in open field engagements but more CQC/CQB Situations.
I love this channel so much
Also because ballistic shields
