  • Born September 22, 1918, died February 22, 1943, Hans Scholl was just 24 years old when he was beheaded by the Nazis for high treason against the state for his role in founding the White Rose resistance group. Hans turned against the Nazis when he learned same-sex relationships were illegal. He was arrested for a relationship as a teen, with another teen and began reconsider his views on National Socialism. His arrest and trial turned him firmly agains the Nazis and had the same impact on his siblings.
He was the primary author of a series of leaflets distributed illegally denouncing the Nazi regime and urging Germans to resist. He gathered a group of friends around him to help promote these ideas. In one incident his sister Sophie was helping distribute leaflets at university and is believed to have been spotted throwing them off a balcony by a custodian who turned them in. In a show trial of just a few hours the siblings were found guilty and ordered to the guillotine. The last words of Hans were, "Long live liberty."
In one of the White Rose leaflets it said: ""But our present 'state' is the dictatorship of evil. 'Oh, we've known that for a long time,' I hear you object, 'and it isn't necessary to bring that to our attention again.' But, I ask you, if you know that, why do you not bestir yourselves, why do you allow these men who are in power to rob you step by step, openly and in secret, of one domain of your rights after another, until one day nothing, nothing at all will be left but a mechanized state system presided over by criminals and drunks? Is your spirit already so crushed by abuse that you forget it is your right-or rather, your moral duty-to eliminate this system?"

History Alive It truly is! Our theatre house in my town is doing a play of The White Rose. I’m playing Hans and I can’t wait to show this off to all my fellow cast members, and all the other videos!

In my opinion Hans often gets shafted when the story of the White Rose is told, they downplay his role and exaggerate the role of his sister. That started when Inge, the older sister, hide so much about the origins of the White Rose because it had to due with Hans being arrested by the Nazis for a gay relationship he had.

History Alive Oh my Gosh!! That’s crazy! I always wondered why Sophie was the face of the resistance in the films and plays! I can’t wait to share that news with my cast, they’re gonna be shocked!😂 and Thank you so much for that article! That rlly helped a lot! The play we’re doing is an original and I had nothing to go off of, especially since a lot of the adaptations of the White Rose story revolve around Sophie! The trail scenes were especially difficult because I didn’t know how Hans would have acted. That was amazingly helpful! Thank you so much!!🙏😇😊

It's sad really.....I read somewhere that the soldiers watching them before their execution let them smoke their cigarettes....that the kids thought that people would revolt when they found out that they had been executed!!!...there is a flip side to this however...and that is that NOT all German people were Nazi's. Now, anybody who knows history... anybody who knows anything about Germany and it's people particularly at that could tell you that everybody was a party member...but it doesn't matter... I've encountered much racist jokes when asked about my last name( being very German) .... especially from people of color to boot! Yet at least there was people very brave like him. Again I've read that right before they killed him Hans said that he knew where he was going when he died, but did they??
Ahhhhhh, life is weird, strange and for some very very unfair ...and very SCARY in my opinion.
