2024 The Year of the RETAIL APOCALYPSE

  • The retail apocalypse is alive and well. In 2023 there were 4600 stores closed nationwide while only 5500 opened nationwide. Yes it is still a net positive but definitely not a good sign of whats to come in 2024 considering we are only a few days in, and already 580 retail store closure announcements.

Hey Michael, Fellow Chicagoian here. You are 1000 percent correct. I am a otr truck driver and haul nothing but raw material chemicals. In other words, I haul what not most but all manufacturers use to make their products. From boxes to makeup to diapers and everything in between. The market I operate in has had the total bottom fall out of it. The loads available to haul has dropped my over half and no bulk transport companies are not hiring any drivers because the work just isn't there. I drive all over this country and have been in the business for 23 plus years and I have never seen it this bad. Manufacturers are not producing or making things which means they are not ordering the raw materials anymore. It has been like this since Sept of 2022. Anyone reading this take my word on this, ish is about to get really bad out here. Do not believe anything that cable news is reporting about our economy. Myself and my fellow drivers move everything in this economy and I am telling you all now, we are all headed for an epic crash even worst then the 1930's. So many people are about to get completely blindsided by this.

Well... if they'd discard BLS data for the pablum it is, the "experts" might not be so damn wrong all the time. I recall that hit hard in the Obama years, as on a nearly month in/month out basis, over and over and over... reports of "surprise" were the norm PLUS the next months revisions were down more than up. America was flatlined: nothing grew, hiring was stagnant, but the discount window feeding investment banks kept wall street with enough positive news that any recession reporting got squelched.

Why are people broke? Most of us work for others. We get paid a wage and we go home to do our own thing when our day is done. The problem is, inflation and wages have not kept pace with each other.
What's the solution? I think we are already starting to see it. As older, more enfranchised Americans pass on, companies have to change how they do business. If nobody can afford a home or a service, to stay relevant ,that industry must find a way to draw in new customers. Most established chains can't do that anymore with anyone under 45.
You watch, someone will invent a method or a system that gives Incentive to participate in the economy. It can't be all stuck and no carrot forever. How each of us benefit from what comes next will depend on our lack of attachment to the nostalgia we place on how things were decades ago. I am done with the 1990's. Are you?

I had a payday loan for many years and was finally able to pay it off in March of 2023. The amount I ended up paying after the initial loan amount was substantially higher. Stay away from payday and auto title loans because the interest they charge makes it very difficult to pay it off quickly. At Home Depot and Lowe's, a lot of their inventory is online order and pick up some other time. Not thrilled when going to get something on sale and then they say online only and was in the middle of something that needed it and ended up paying more for a different one. A lot of online only items when looking where to go to get something but when a flyer says sale and no online only listed, that's shady.

It gets me off my booty so I can get things done around the house and not gain 20 pounds, sitting on the couch all day.

You would think they would want to draw in buyers or use loss leaders, but they don't. Kind of weird. Great coverage of USA economic crash.

The reason was the change in business model implemented at a systemic level. It’s called “just in time”. It includes the entire retail and wholesale global commodities chain of finance controlled businesses. This 21st Century finance controlled business model uses technology to do this, maximizing finance’s investment in the entire global system. It was this system that broke down during Covid, “just in time” is very vulnerable at a global scale level.
You know, the WEF had predicted that the world would experience a global pandemic by 2020, and they have also predicted that the world will experience a global scale infrastructure attack by 2025, (think electronic communications, especially in finance😉).
How did they get so good at predicting these new “global” events, that are fundamentally challenging and changing the world!? Like it’s by design!🤗

Americans ramped up their online shopping this past holiday season, splurging on a record-setting $222 billion worth of electronics, toys and other items. The spending haul between November 1 and December 31 marks a 4.9% increase from the previous holiday shopping season.
Waiting for everyone to say it was "all bought with credit". Maybe so, but fact remains the money is still being spent.

The next thing will be subscription services for functionality in your car features. Like heated seats, the OEM will require you to have a monthly subscription to have your heated seats to work. The same goes for remote start from your fob, locking and unlocking, etc. You don't own the software that runs on the dozen or so computers in your car.

Every way companies cam dream up to add to their bottom line profit margin, no matter how outrageous, they will gleefully add in the way of extra fees on cars, flights, banking needs, food orders,....I even heard somebody online say their Walmart started charging a non-refundable $7.00 fee just to use a shopping cart in the store!!! Again, they said it was not only 7.00, where as Aldi's charges $0,.25, but Aldi's then refunds your quarter when you park the cart at storefront, but writer said the $7.00 was not refunded when they were done shopping!! Did not say what state, and I have no proof whether this was true or not, but I will never pay $7.00 to load up my groceries!! I hope I still have the kid's old red wagon, or I will be loading up mu groceries in the wheelbarrow! Cause you know if it is true, it I only a matter of time before every grocery store will also start to charge a similar disgusting cart fee also!!!

and in future housing it just takes up cabinet space. Now where I still in a family, I’d have one.

re: Shoes. BEING IN FLORIDA as you are, you're in the Capital of Dying Rich people. So you might actually find the Alden, Rancourt, Allen Edmunds, and Brooks Brothers caliber shoes in Goodwill type stores. Lotta people buy the really expensive shoes, and then never wear them. The winners end up being the people who find the shoes at Goodwill Salvation Army type stores in super rich zip codes.
But be careful with dying brands like Allen Edmonds. As with Nordstrom Rack Online, they sometimes send out factory defect shoes as "year end sale" merchandise. Or Clearance / "No Returns accepted" at too-good-to-be-true prices.
