One of the best examples of a theme not doing remakes is Minecraft. It's theme has been around for 10 years, (8 years of minifigure scale sets). I think there's only been one official "remake" of a set being the Ender Dragon. They're constantly expanding on that theme year after year. And it ties into another point on the list - no stickers.

Minecraft as a theme never made much sense to me, I'm genuinely surprised it has lasted that long.
When it exists as a sandbox game, infinitely procedurally generated that you can build and rebuild as many times you want across game modes, I've never seen the incentive behind limiting oneself to physical recreations of that, with a fraction of the versatility and play factor, for several times the cost

My biggest issue with lego is the inaccuracy of licenced sets. I get that you can't spoil movies and everything, but sometimes the sets are so different from what the thing they are based on are that it borders on being false advertising. They always narrowly dodge the legal aspects, Avengers Endgame sets being a great example.

    • @undead.rising
      @undead.rising 2 года назад +84

Endgame was not their fault. I guarantee that Disney/Marvel purposefully gave most toy companies a misdirect so as to not spoil anything.

My gripes with Lego are as follows...
    1. Stickers - They're a pain to put on
    2. Their Apps: Hidden Side and Vidiyo outright couldn't work or were incompatible with certain phones or tablets
    3. Batman: Nearly every DC set has to cram in Batman despite DC having a rich catalogue of heroes and villains that are just begging for a set
    4. Oversized packaging: Giant boxes that are half full which seems silly as it's just excessive waste and could easily be cut down.
    5. Instruction Booklets: Some sets contain a load of instruction booklets for really small builds. Why not just convert them into one booklet?
    6. Their Policy on Violence: Lego will not make sets that contain violence or military themed sets, yet their biggest money maker is called "Star Wars" which is a franchise that has people with weapons that can cut and slice you up and have tyrannical empires blowing up planets and killing innocent lives

Totally agree on stickers, I hate them so much, and the last point I 100% agree, lets not forget that they make sets based on the Clone Wars show which had some really violent scenes in it, best example is Clone Commander Thorn's last stand in one episode, I wish they would drop that no violence part, it takes away so many concepts that could be so cool to see as lego sets.

Too few RUclipsrs and other LEGO fan media have called them out for it (probably because they'll get the usual backlash from daring to criticize LEGO plus having to deal with meta obsessives) and it seems like the general community has almost entirely forgotten about it even though it was very recent. It was already bad just for the environmental impact going against everything they've worked for in recent years but now that they're pretending to be forced into raising prices it's even worse.
Public outcry has ended many of these meta/NFT related projects companies are trying to push and if LEGO fans with platforms would actually speak about it we could end this before it gets more serious.

The Lego Ideas sets that get approved are never the ones I'm rooting for, several of the licensed themes (i.e., DC, Mario) have been horribly squandered, copyright abuse has been the bane of my existence and stickers are my least favourite part of building a Lego set. Also on the missed opportunities there’s Doctor Who. Lego is established to make sets for older collectors, such as the ones made more to be displayed pieces than actually played with like the helmets sub range, and Doctor Who has heavy nostalgia factor. The model designs exist with the Lego Dimensions game, so sets based on specific era console rooms along with their Doctors and companions or iconic locations would have appeal. Established characters and monsters in different locations would allow people to play out new stories, such as the Fourth Doctor and Sarah on a Dalek spaceship or the Tenth Doctor and Donna with Cybermen in a freezer center. Yet all we got was one control room and TARDIS exterior set, and the Lego Dimensions pack.

Sometimes I really annoys me that Lego doesn’t really make animals accessible, Jurassic world is the only way to get new Lego Dino’s with many iconic Dino’s like stegosaurus and brachiosaurus still missing mini figures. And keeping the most desired animals such as the new elephant in the largest sets.

Thank you for bringing this topic up, so many LEGO fans are die-hard and will defend everything LEGO ever does.
Personally, my biggest issues with LEGO are:
-Manufactured Scarcity - They are a multi-billion dollar company, by now they should understand what is going to be popular and produce more stock based on that. I know that the popularity has been rising recently, and apparently they are opening a new factory, but I still feel this will be a problem. The two biggest examples are the Clone Command Station which almost retired before it was ever really in stock, and the Blue Milk Luke which was NOT advertised as a pre-order bonus, but basically ended up being just that. It's no secret that LEGO owns Bricklink, so they are benefitting more by making less which is crazy.
-Chrome pieces - Okay this might just be me, but I LOVE chrome pieces, and from what I heard, LEGO stopped using them in sets because the paint chips over time. Okay, that's valid I suppose, but stickers also wear over time too... And the fact that they still make chrome keychains TO THIS DAY, boggles my mind! keychains experience way more wear-and-tear than normal bricks, so that literally does not make sense to me.
-plastic quality - cracking torsos/legs needs to be addressed.
-They spend way to much on publicity stunts at the cost of the consumer, life-sized cars and models are cool and all, but I don't want to have to indirectly pay for all that (someone also mentioned that they spent $1M on the metaverse)
-Retiring parts/molds - Apparently they 'destroyed' the goat mold, ok, do they not have the design plans to make another mold? Again they are a multi-billion dollar company, why can't they just hang on to old mold or mold designs (yes I know molds have limited use, but they should always be able to make more using the same design, it would save costs of designing a new element.) fun fact: Part 32008 was only used in 1997, then randomly revived in 2009.
-DUPLO gets way more love than system - look up "DUPLO zoo" and you'll see why I say that
-LEGO Ideas contests - so this is something I personally experienced when I entered an Ideas contest. If another contender has the 10k badge (means they had a LEGO Ideas set that reached 10k support) it notifies all of their fans when they enter the contest, and on the contest entry, it displays their 10k badge. This makes it EXTREMELY unfair to new users because people flock to support them, and then it shows their entry above everyone else's, which nets them even more votes. TL:DR - entries should be anonymous.

There are so many great IPs that would bring in a good chunk of money for Lego that they won't touch on because they're too mature. The thing that really upsets with Lego is the lack of new characters when it comes to superhero sets. I don’t mean to be picky but it’s true. We keep getting Batman sets with Batman and already used villains. I don’t mind if they do Batman and an already existing villian, but I think they should just be on the side and have new characters being the star of the show. It adds more variety to the sets. And this brings me to another point:making way too many vehicle and sets and now place sets. They are so many locations in the marvel and dc world and yet they only focus on vehicles. At least with the older ones like yea they had many vehicles but at the same time had many awesome playsets like the hulk smash lab, old daily bugle, joker fun house. I think they should equal it out. A wave of superhero sets with half with vehicle sets and half with
play sets. As the sets themselves. Have of it should have new characters and half with some older ones. Hope all of this makes sense.

    • @meep9231
      @meep9231 2 года назад +2

Couldn’t agree more, even though Marvel has gotten somewhat better with Spider-Man for location sets, there’s still not a lot for other MCU ones. Back in the day for phase 2 we got an entire Avengers tower and Helicarrier, but nowadays the locations for these sets are just half assed made. And speaking of the amount of Batman sets, it always confuses me how Batman is more popular than Superman in terms of Lego. Sure the character itself is definitely marketable, but the problem is that they never seem to give him any time to shine with Superman’s own characters and villains, same thing kinda goes for the other major DC characters that aren’t Batman related.

My biggest issue with LEGO rn is the way their squandering their partnership with Nintendo. Nintendo and LEGO are my two favorite brands and I’ve dreamed of LEGO Nintendo sets for years and it makes me sad how little they’re doing with the partnership. The LEGO Mario sets are pretty neat but they lack any display value and their refusal to give us minifigures is really frustrating. Even beyond just LEGO Mario though I really want LEGO to do sets from other Nintendo properties even if they’re just one or two sets to give us a cool build and some awesome minifigures. Personally The Legend of Zelda has always been my favorite video game franchise and I would love to get official minifigures and sets based off it. Even other franchises like Metroid and Pokémon deserve at least a one off set.

To be fair, there are occasional nods to more mature things in LEGO sets. The BIONICLE G2 Skull Archer and Skull Grinder's masks had an extreme resemblance to the Terminator's iconic skull, and the Nether Adventurer's design in the LEGO Minecraft Nether Bastion set could be seen as a nod to DOOM, though it does also look a bit Halo-like as well. So they'll make references that the adult fans will get, but they won't make sets that are explicitly based on things for more mature audiences.

Lego city needs to stop having road plates in City sets, they devalue the buildings because they need the space for them. The old Road plates were fine because you could get them separately on their own, you get a good building set and could add road plates if you want to, for me that's a better value than having them take over half the set, leaving small room for buildings which makes them look unfinished. If I want to buy a building like the 2022 school and hospital I want a building not a small 4 stud wide rooms with little space. Just make one road plate set and then design the set to be compatible with them so that you can have the option, but you still have a good looking building with side builds if you choose not to.

I’d say my two big gripes with lego, are Ninjago, and dinosaur pieces.
For Ninjago, I don’t think it’s a bad theme. But it’s a theme eater. So many cool ideas, just wasted on the ninjas for the 80th time. A video game world, a table top fantasy rpg, a similar theme to Atlantis. So many fun ideas, but it just HAS to have ninjago plastered on. I get it’s a best seller, but come on. It’s so depressing to see such a lack of unlicensed themes, that lego think won’t sell, so they just slap Ninjago on it. I feel Hidden Side and Monkie Kid would have done better if the first didn’t have terrible packaging and forcing an app onto the theme, and the second would have done even better, by being more accessible to people around the world, rather than mostly just China. But nope, Ninjago just continues to get is grubby paws on all these good ideas. Ugh.
Now for the dinosaur pieces. I absolutely despise them. They feel like Anti-Lego. Lego is a toy that allows you to build almost anything you want, even with specialized pieces. A slopped piece could be used as a part of a ship, detail to a mountain, a part for a mech. It’s specialized, but there’s so many options for them! Dino parts, it’s the opposite. You can only use the pieces in a dinosaur context. And even if you don’t, that piece is still restrictive. A dino’s leg is still just a leg. And that’s it. That’s it’s main purpose. It was DESIGNED to only be that. For smaller dinos I can see why they are specialized, but the big ones I hate with a passion. What could have been a fun and intuitive build, is just a duplo like build, that’s less than ten parts. If the Dino was brick built, you could take it apart, and build something new! But with these big specialized, thats all they’ll be. Just dinosaur pieces that sit in a bin. And you can barley be used outside their intended context. If you lose pieces to a brick built dino, build a new leg, or take the whole thing apart and build something completely different! Lose a leg on the specialized dino. Sucks to be you, that leg is gone until you find it. Not to mention, the dinos increase the price of a set by an ungodly amount. And they have to put in a vehicle or terrain just to make the set actually have something worth building, when the Dino itself could be a fun build on its own, or with a vehicle or terrain! But no, just give them big specialized pieces.

I can at least give the 2001 dinos a pass, not because of nostalgia or anything, but they don’t increase the price of a set, and aren’t really the main focus, that being the main build. The JP sets will mostly focus on the dinos themselves, and shove the build to the sidelines.

Here are other things that I absolutely despise about Lego.
    A. Reusing faces over a billion times.
    B. Using faces on movie characters that look NOTHING like the actual actor/actress. (looking at you Lego Shang-Chi)
    C. Always accepting Lego idea sets that are based on real life instead of actual themes that everyone wants. (Like Lego Stitch freaking lost to the international space station for goodness sake!)
    D. Making up dumb rules like that one thing rule that forbids Lego sets being related to the military even though they made sets like Indiana Jones which has freaking Nazis and Russians for goodness sake. They just removed the logos for censorship and they also make a rule that forbids Lego sets based on first person shooting games like Cod and Halo but they made Lego Overwatch which is also a first person shooter.
    E. Being too Disneyfied. What I mean is that every theme they go for is always rated G/E to T/PG-13. No R/M rated sets are allowed. Sure there are kids buying sets but adults buy Lego too and I just prefer if Lego just does something different and do something more mature for adults but NOPE, they have to do this because "tHiNK oF tHe ChILdReN." Stupid.
    F. And finally it's this weird thing I find about Lego minifigures. More specifically the first Marvel CMF series. I just question myself that how come the minifigures in the CMF series are really well printed and have excellent pieces while the set they come in (or at least Wanda) barely has any printing. I just don't get it?!

Price and disappointing series are my biggest issues with LEGO.
LEGO used to be much more affordable back then and I feel the rising prices will negatively impact and drive away kids from enjoying it in the future.

One of my biggest issues with lego sets lately is that they dont put enough attention to themes. For DSITMOMthey made gargantose and waited so long for the santum, same with Thor LT and stranger things. Lego just print money with that stacourt mall already.

The lack of “mature” licences is frustrating too. Surely that should be part of their “Adults Welcome” promo. 🤷‍♂️

I don't get your frustration with stickers, I find stickers are fine to apply and end up looking better than most prints, lego has produced prints with some absolutely abysmal quality to the point where some of mine are awkwardly off center, and off colour. I would rather have the ability to apply the stickers myself and get the placement right, plus having the freedom to just not apply if I prefer the plain look. I agree with the colour of the stickers not matching though, that is something they need to improve. I also accept that printed pieces are great for minifig accessories, and small/curved pieces that would be otherwise much more difficult to apply a sticker to

There some more and even worse Lego crimes that you do not mention:
    1. Varying colors (in the same set you can get 5 or more variants of the same color)
    2. The injection points have become much bigger and noticeable in the last couple of years
    3. The hideous color-mix that you find inside most sets nowadays, which leads to the fact that most sets are not designed to be taken apart again.
    4. Astronomical prices. Lego is not "just expensive". Its prices are exorbitant.
    5. More and more huge and ludicrously priced sets.
    6. You always need batteries to get any motor running or lights glowing (a rare occurrence with Lego).
    7. You need a mobile phone to play with some sets.
    8. Some of the prints are of really bad quality. Just look at all the Han Solos we got over the years.
    9. Windows and tiles often come with scratches.
    10. Inappropriate choice of colors (DeLorean, Lamborghini, Liebherr).
    11. Really bad renderings of originals, cars in particular. The rear of James Bond's Aston Martin looks like a Trabant.
    12. The policy of maximizing profit at the cost of releasing horrible and miserly sets - a supermarket without a roof? You cannot be serious!
The list might go on and on ... Lego nowadays? 🤮🤪💩! I am so glad that we have so many excellent alternatives now.

I miss the old style of blaster in Lego Star Wars. The small ones with the red studs on the end. They were super cartoony but fit pretty well, Lego is not meant to be super realistic after all. Nowadays all you get are the bigger ones which more resemble canons or the small pistol style ones with no personality whatsoever.

I think when it comes to leaks, Star Wars is so sensitive because Sets are specific scenes while Avatar is a tad bit older and I feel it being leaked wouldn't harm anything because everyone's seen the movie.
