Why No Resurrection Appearances in Mark?

- Everyone goes to Matthew, Luke, and John to read about Easter Morning and the various appearances of Jesus to his followers. However, our earliest account is the Gospel of Mark, and surprisingly, in our earliest manuscripts, Mark has NO APPEARANCES whatsoever.

Maybe the abrupt ending means that the last few pages were lost. It's called textual criticism. Look at the text as a whole and does such an ending make sense?

16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.
Redundant verses. All you need is Yeshua's earlier prediction and the testimony of the young looking being in the otherwise empty tomb!!

The question many are not asking is this: Why would people need to believe in a prophet? Why? In Mark (the first, most original gospel), Jesus NEVER claimed to be more than a mere human. he called himself a "son of man"- in other words, a prophet. You don't bow down to Moses or Elijah or Jeremiah, so why would you worship a prophet called Jesus?

Zecheriah chapter 12:10 written 500 years before Jesus came ,the Lord prophesied , he would die and be pierced as Jesus .
When Jesus said son of man ,what he meant was he was born on earth, similarly as a human but he had no human Father.
John 10:34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said you are “gods”’? 35 If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God came-and Scripture cannot be set aside- 36 (what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? )Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’? 37 Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father. 38 But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.” 39 Again they tried to seize him, but he escaped their grasp.
To be a prophet is only one characteristic of a person who does God's will. Jesus had many more aspects as mentioned above.

@@turnfrmsinorhell_jesus, it is rather ironic that the gospel of John" was not written by John, the disciple of Jesus...but a bunch of Greco-Romans who were writing and re-writing and "editing" what they wanted people to believe in and not what truly happened.
Zechariah was not talking about a single man. Where did you get that from? What sort of a misguided preacher were you listening to? Read it in Hebrew (in the original) and tell me what those words truly mean.

My hypothesis is that after ha Mashiach was not told by the Father to take control of the physical temple before it was destroyed, the disciples recognized that Paul's letters left out much of the oral story that had been going around and the core message of the Christ's purpose had to be documented. Mark or ? chose to do that job.

Exactly. The body went missing. Since Mark's Jesus is the euhemerisation of Paul's Jesus, clearly to a believer at the time Mark is saying that Jesus was resurrected by apotheosis. But unbelievers then suggested that someone, perhaps the male disciples, stole the body and in response Matthew wrote a small vignette to explain this and blame the Jews for it. For who else would start the rumor, right Christians? Right? 😡
It could be the other way around: they came up with idea of the empty to support their claim of the sighting of Jesus after the supposed ‘crucifixion.’ What do you think of that?

OK, then Prof, let’s do it the UChicago way - even accepting, provisionallly, what Prof Tabor argues about “I Wondrous Yehovah - lift up, lift up!” inscription translation etc. and Talpiot, what does that have to do with Mark’s deprived “voice” and early Christian belief in the resurrection from the “1st generation” of believers/apostles viz, Peter, James (the Lord’s brother, Galatians 1:19), John and finally, ("as to one untimely born”), Paul?
- to quote an overused cliche “Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence”
- assuming any post-Resurrection visions/appearances if at all, were in Galilee and not Jerusalem (“After I am raised up” etc. Mark 14:28), with Peter and the 10 returning to their vocation of fishing (as John correctly amplifies in John 21 postscript/epilogue/epexegesis), how can this wish away or preclude any appearance to Magdalene in John 20, or to Salome, Clopas, and Magdalene/Bethany (likely equivalent) in Luke/Matthew?
- notice, I am ignoring for the moment John in Ephesus living to teach Polycarp (as Tertullian and Ireneus both claim, “until Trajan” etc.), and also Peter/Evodius/Ignatius in Antioch
- even assuming James the Less/Alphaeus/Just (as I think, cousin/step-brother of Jesus and offspring of Mary Clopas, sister of Mary mother of Jesus, wife of Alphaeus brother of Joseph) IS the “Beloved Disciple” as Prof Tabor argues, where is there any proof through any “James Ossuary inscription" from Oded Golan, whom Prof Tabor apparently is acquainted with, that this James was necessarily a YOUNGER brother by Joseph?
- and if so, why must Jesus, his BIOLOGICAL BROTHER tell the “Beloved Disciple” James on the Cross “Here is your mother/son” etc. in John 19:26 (it would appear superfluous and a tautology since James is ALREADY the biological son of Mary, mother of God and NOT Mary Clopas as I would argue, no)?
- also, if James is the “Beloved Disciple” and biological brother of Jesus, what need then (or impudence) on the part of Joseph of Arimathea to seek out the body and arrange for burial in his own tomb? (unless he was Mary’s uncle, as some argue)
- Indeed, if James the Just was a “biological brother” by Joseph and Mary (and not son of Mary Clopas/Alphaeus) and a possible Levite who did not enter the tomb for ritualistic and purity reasons, after rushing to it with Peter and overtaking it morning after Sabbath, logic would demand he is OLDER due to timing issues and Joseph being absent after Jesus at the Temple age 12, with potentially FOUR other brothers, and at least 2 sisters, per Jude being born in the intervening years (!) had he been a younger brother.
- it would take a brave Joseph indeed to physically copulate with a “wife" he has just seen giving birth through the Holy Spirit, and I’m not even going to get into what “protokonos” and “hoes” mean/imply.
- I would instead conjecture, James the Just was the OLDER/ELDEST half-brother from Mary Clopas, wife of Alphaeus who trained him initially in Scripture and Septuagint, and it was his aunt/uncle (Alphaeus/Mary Clopas) whom Jesus encountered on the road to Emmaus in the “appearance" as Luke (alone) mentions to fill in the narrative. And no, I am not parroting Jerome.
- further, sticking with Luke alone, access to all the details of the life of Mary mother of Jesus and Magnificat become clear if Luke had access to Mary Clopas/Alphaeus
- and lastly, sticking with Luke, it can even be speculated (albeit feebly) that Jesus HIMSELF may have been the “Prodigal Son” to his father Joseph with James the Just, the older brother who remains with the father, while Jesus took off during his “Lost Years” (for whatever reasons).
Revelations 5 mentions the resurrected Jesus again in heaven. You can't remove him no matter how you try. Better repent for these false teachings

There's a lot in the Gospels that we've overlooked, missed, misunderstood or even added in our own minds, especially in Mark's Gospel with that short, seemingly inconclusive ending.
Tabor is giving an online class on Mark and I'm taking it, when I'm not babysitting my granddaughter while her parents work. I'm 70 years old, have been reading the Bible all my life and yet am just surprised at how much I've missed, misunderstood, overlooked, etc.
As for the Biblical people being "shamanic" and inducing trances....I just couldn't say. Perhaps I've missed that too. You say, "Just as the biblical texts explain." It may be that way but I've not seen any references to it.

Prove Mark did not write Mark. You have to substantiate your unfounded claim.
I DISagree that the "Markan Gospel", which I DON'T even think was BY "Mark", is the "EARLIEST Gospel". There is at least ONE SIGNificant indication that it ISN'T.
I DISagree that the "ORIGINAL manuscriptS" of that "Gospel" end with NO sightings of Jesus after the tomb because, logically, there can be ONLY ONE "ORIGINAL" manuscript..... the FIRST one written by the author.
I DISagree that it is NECESSARILY the "EARLIEST" manuscripts of that "Gospel" that LACKED post-Resurrection sightings of Jesus because THOSE may be the EARLIEST currently in EXISTENCE but NOT the EARLIEST WRITTEN.... a SIGNificant difference. It MAY BE that the earliest texts DID include SOME version of post-Resurrection sightings but LATER manuscripts OMITTED them, and THOSE were the earliest to have survived; though LATER COPIES of the ORIGINAL manuscript INCLUDING those post-Resurrection episodes DID MAINTAIN the ORIGINAL version.
We CAN'T KNOW definitively with ancient scribal manuscripts which VERSIONS of the textual account came EARLIER because we CANNOT comprehensively track the thought patterns of those KEEPING and COPYING them as well as those COMPOSING them. I think Pro. Tabor ASSUMES too much, and in one of his complete lectures on "Mark" as the "EARLIEST Gospel" I will point out the SIGN through comparative textology that it IS NOT.
What we do know is that Jesus said he was coming back SOON, it’s been a little long than anyone would consider soon.

@@Hj61S827”Soon” in the context of human history can definitely mean “upwards of 2000 years”. Christ represented a huge paradigm shift in spiritual thought, one which is relatively discontinuous with the preceding 200,000 years+. On a timescale such as that, and with such a radical shift in thought, it’s pretty reasonable to assume that soon means “soon in relation to the timescale of the species existence”, or even the timescale of the existence of human civilization.
@@raxxtv1998 yeah maybe, but I think it’s more of a translation issue, man interjecting his agenda, and other powers trying to manipulate humans. James Tabor does a great job showing the real language used, and the events that did happen soon after Jesus’s death.
His view was that the chapter of revelation had already happened. Really neat channel.

I got the sense that he was either an atheist, or a follower of the Jesus religion pre-Paul, attempting to show Christianity truly was before it was corrupted.

Paul was trying to tell you that he made everything up. that he lied, but the colonizers only believe in lies.

@@termination9353 it is of no consequence. A person's testimony can be true while having mistakes in it. That happens all of the time. The issue that I have with people is that even if they get the word from the horses mouth they will use anything they can no matter how far fetched the information is. People put words in Jesus mouth that he never said. They say Jesus said this but he meant this. They will use words by lessor people in place of the lord's words. Can't you see how crazy that is. Either way it doesn't matter to me anymore. Believe whatever you like. Everyone will believe whatever God wants them to believe. Good luck
