  • Dragon Age: The Veilguard has met a very mixed reception from its fanbase and gamers. However, after some recent interviews, it's what the developers are saying that's changing my mind more than the gameplay we have seen so far.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is an upcoming action role-playing video game developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. The fourth major game in the Dragon Age franchise, The Veilguard will be the sequel to Dragon Age: Inquisition.

As a long time Dragon Age fan, I am used to Bioware changing the game mechanics in every iteration. I expected the game to be like this especially after the leak that happened sometime back. I will play the game for myself and judge it.

I played DAO back in 2009, and then hearing that some of the soon to be released DA2 had some gameplay mechanics like Mass Effect played ME to see what that was like. That got me playing ME1 & ME2 before DA2 came out. Then ME3. Then DAI where the gameplay was slightly familiar, but different again to the previous DA games. It has changed with each game. To me the gameplay and combat looks a lot similar to Mass Effect, and I don't see it as a bad thing, just different. As long as the story and characters are firmly DA and engaging then I think I'll enjoy playing it.

I agree with his view on how to showcase gameplay combat. I personally enjoy both turn-based and action rpg combat systems. Whoever was playing Veil Guard in the gameplay showcase didn't really seem to be giving us much as opposed to the gameplay combat showcase for Hogwarts Legacy, for example. During that, the person on the controller did an excellent job of showing the rather fluid parrying mechanic, while devs explained everything that was going on with combat. Hogwarts Legacy's crew was very insightful about it. I wish we could've gotten more out of the combat showcase for Veil Guard, but I'm sure they'll release more vids closer to launch, or at least I hope so. I'm all for 'evolving' the look and feel of DA, but the game still needs to be true to the foundational DA lore and play well if it stands any chance of success.
And I am hoping it does well.
Also, it's been confirmed that there will be some cameos in Veil Guard, so I'm really hoping to see my bestie Dorian and my bae Bull.😂

  • @Caoshunter23
    @Caoshunter23 21 день назад +1

With only 3 active skills my guess is they took inspiration from mass effect andromeda as it got praise for the combat. I personally felt like that was a massive design flaw with the combat. Yes there are different profiles you could switch to but it was still a massive limitation for no reason. I personally not a fan of the direction where the combat is going. So when looking at the damage output of the companions it appears to be just very minimal with 5 to 6 attacks doing the same amount of damage as one of the player's attacks so it makes you wonder just how much impact companions are really going to have in combat. Secondly the enemies are just targeting the player character and have to wonder if there's a way to draw aggro from enemies to not attack the squishier characters? Which if not is it going to be like inquisitions where you can give them armor from a yell ability? Aside from healing we have no idea if there's support skills. Everything we've seen so far suggests that if you're character isn't doing damage it's a waste of time so for those who want to play a support character doesn't seem like there's an option or if there is a way you're putting yourself at a massive disadvantage. I hope the game has a good story but the writing quality and many of the line deliveries from what was shown doesn't fill me with confidence that's going to happen. There's probably going to be articles written in the future about how this game like the past few bioware games had an unclear vision of what the game is suppose be which lead to most of the work being done in a relatively short period of time.

Although I prefer being able to take my time with it instead of real time button smashing, I will play in story mode anyway. I play dragon age for the story, not for combat. The hard focus on the combat system actually makes me a bit hesitant and afraid they might have sacrificed story and depth of the characters over 'pew pew lasers'. I'll just sit back, watch and see when new information comes out. When we got the character trailer I was noping out, and so far I have moved to 'will probably get at some point, when it is on sale'. I bought DA:O as my first Bioware game in 2009 and was enamored with the first level shown and the art direction was amazing, you explored the world and subclasses were found through world interaction not via a tree. It was what made me trust Bioware and buy Mass Effect 2 the following year! After that DA2 was obvs a preorder and boy was I disappointed with the gameplay, but hawk and characters like Anders brought it back to a semi good experience. Inquisition for me felt like a good middle ground and the first level reveal looked a lot like Veilguard. My only worry is all three previous games had similarly good art direction and Veilguard really doesn't. Veilguard also feels more like DA2 in combat. Compare the Pride demons from this trailer and Inquisition, there is a distinct lack of menace and weight. They feel like laser ghosts not demons.....

Interesting you mention turn based game play as an example of limitation of technology, but fail to recognize the combat controls down grade caused by the limitation that is a console controller. Keyboard and mouse give me many different hotkeys to trigger skills in combat rather than being stuck with only 2 or 3. As someone who disliked the change in combat from Origins to 2( and remembers the awful waves that teleported into being early in DA2's release, thus removing any tactical thinking for defeating such combatants), I have a wait and see approach. The time span between game releases also a reason to be cautious.

Really fucked with my excitement for the game. There're plenty of people who don't care much about combat and that's fine for them, but as somebody who does, seeing that poor gameplay reveal has got me heavily questioning things. It just looks so awkward and empty, but that can easily be because of the unskilled player and their low level/locked gameplay mechanics. Still gonna wait to see some (hopefully) better gameplay showcases. And mod support details.

I am too biased towards this game. I LOVE nearly all of these games, played them years ago. I love the story and the world, and played a lot of them on nightmare mode, though I didn't finish all of them on that. Though I have finished all of the main games at least once, the DLC hasn't always drew me in.
Each has some pretty basic pros and cons.
Origins is probably the most polished of the bunch, plus the story-line hits pretty hard from the beginning to the end. The specialized origin story chapters are something I think ALL fans want to come back, although it might just feel like wasted content for the developers. The combat is pause-play, which has the tendency to lean in the player's favor. You can literally control when combat stops, in a game with strategy. It does feel more organic to me than turn-based, and in origins it usually doesn't feel unbalanced because, like most tactical RPGs, you are always outnumbered. I had a lot of fun with this game, but the combat is never really pushed as far as it can go.
Dragon age II has an egregious amount of reusing assets in the game. Levels, character models, et cetera. The only reason I forgive this is for two things. One, the game was made in around a year, and two the storyline has been made over different chunks (acts) with some large time skips. This doesn't mean most models are changed, no, but having the characters and stories develop over time in one place has its merits. It's been years since I played it, and I don't want to replay it as much as the others. Some opinions seem to think that the combat changed alot in this game, but I never really felt it was very dramatic. You pause, you select abilities, they activate, you run around. The abilities do have more focus how enemies are grouped, and this is a minor increase in being able to control these grouped enemies. But nothing close to anything pure action. The artstyle and attack animations became far more "stylish".
Inquisition has the most content, but some of that content is horrific fetch quests which I NEVER wish to do again. Tresspasser being DLC when it feels like the "true" ending of the game is also heinous. I like that the stylish attack animations stayed from two. The story does feel like a... more pretty tone than the grimier one of origins. Not that the story shies away from sorrow or atrocities, but it is more polite in conveying them.
As for "wokequesition". Zevran and Leiliana were always bi, and all the companions in two were technically bi. Inquisition certainly increased the amount of characters that focused on LGBTQ... content? but it also has a much wider cast. I feel like in origins it was much subtler and for Inquisition I would have preferred a little more depth for a character like Krem. A lot of interactions with him feel like "but he's trans!" and maybe focusing more on other aspects of him would have served as a better teaching moment for players then the interactions you do get with him. I do like the subtle avoidance there is for making Solas straight, and the much friendlier character like Dorian gay. Also, having some characters only romance certain races was a funny touch to me.
    GASP They have... a type?!
But it's been around since day one, and since a lot of people like that, it's going to increase. As long as none of the characters are only LGBTQ, but are also brave, duplicitous, wise, funny, and all moral shades of jackass in between, I don't really care.
OK, I care a little. Just how are ALL the veilguard companions pan? Like... ALL OF THEM? It's OK for companions to not want to do the dirty with the PC, somebody tell the developers its OK.
Thank you for reading my essay on my biased rant about the series, anyone who does.

I’m kind of excited as well, but I wanted to contradict something you said. Yes it is “trend chasing” what most developers are doing.
I’ve been disheartened lately as a gamer because so many developers are selling out to be just like Fortnite or over watch (which both have a similar [albeit large] player base).
The question is: when everyone changes to be just like Fortnite or overwatch (in order to get new players from those communities) what will happen to every other gamer that do not enjoy those types of games?

As someone who’s a massive fan of Dragon Age, maybe I can shed some light on the DAO/everyone else split. Basically, there’s a very vocal subset of Dragon Age fans that are ONLY fans of Origins. DAO plays more like the Baldur’s Gate games than anything - in fact, it was designed to be a spiritual successor to the Baldur’s Gate games. So as the franchise has moved away from the tactical combat, that subset has gotten more and more angry.
The other part of this is that Origins is super fucking dark. By far the darkest in the series. And it makes sense, the story of that game is you fighting the Blight, which is an eldritch zombie apocalypse. That’s not to say the other games aren’t dark either; DA2 is dark in the sense of people doing some really evil things. DAI’s darkness is more implied and in the background. So there’s fear that Veilguard will fail to bring the darkness of the Blight to the forefront. That said, the Blight is so fucked up as a concept that it’s impossible for Veilguard not to have extremely dark moments, and it seems we’ll be getting some body horror elements with Ghilan’nain being unleashed. Still, that fear is there.
TL;DR: there’s a group of very vocal DAO elitists that are angry that the combat isn’t nearly as tactical anymore and the other two games aren’t as dark as Origins.

there is also the fact that the narratives were worse as you go forward in the series. DA2 has some interesting ideas that they just sorta missed the mark on, assuming i am correct on it being a game _about_ inevitability and that is what they were going for. the gameplay was mid, but, if you remove the awful level design, it was over all passable. DAI had an out right awful narrative, making you a perfect mary sue and having everything be as simple as possible for you, along side some of the worst gameplay of any game i have ever played.

BlackRock Inc and the Vanguard Group are EAs two biggest shareholders; so even if Veil Guard repulses more fans than it attracts, the DEI money pouring into EAs coffers will 100% guarantee the survival of BioWare and this franchise.
Honestly, they can afford to lose every single fan of the first three games and it won't make any difference.

  • @noctoi

Well... The thing is you CAN'T "control the whole party"... And the party is smaller than ever before in the franchise. What you see in the demo is what you get.
It's also a VERY weak retcon of the promised story, and only makes sense if you read ALL THE BOOKS AND COMICS.
I REALLY WANT to be hopeful about this game... I love this franchise... Hells I have multiple DA tattoos FFS. I'm a fan of the world and the story... But THIS game isn't a sequel to DA:o, it's a spin-off action RPG set in the DA universe and based on the fanfic novels/comics.
I'll probably play it, but it's also probably going to be the LAST Bioware game I play.
And FWIW, Darrah DOESN'T care about what his CUSTOMERS say, unless they agree with HIS idea of a"fun game". If he didn't like Dragon Age Origins, maybe he should have sodded off and developed ANOTHER franchise instead of ruining an existing one. 😡

I find it odd for 'gameplay' to be defined by the OP as combat. (!)
This is an RPG first, unless Bioware has abandoned role-play entirely.
'Companions are now 'pan' -- all of them. That's a hard no for me, because as a Christian, I can deal with having wordly beliefs and actions in a game, but they removed any 'straight' choices.
They promise each companion's backstory will explain why they are 'pan'. Those backstories will make this worse, as if it's fine (reasons) if everyone is 'pan'. It isn't fine, and it isn't good writing. So maybe Bioware is not the RPG they were.
They added more sex, nudity, and increased emphasis on sex to ridiculous levels. (I suppose due to Baldur's Gate 3, from the rumors.) As much as I looked forward to DA4, as long as I waited, (been here since Origins, not sure they care), as good as 'DA: the Veilguard' looks, and as much as I loved the past writing, (and want closure on stories and lore) I can't put money toward this.

RPG stands for Roleplaying Game. Not Strategy Game. There is nothing like "an RPG should be tactical and strategic, and not action realtime". If we get to properly roleplay, then that is an RPG. People should understand that there are many subgenres, and that none is better than the others. Take The Veilguard as it is and is trying to be, and not by what you think it should have been based on a game from 15 years ago or another one from a different brand and company from last year. Trying to discredit or hate the game without it even being out yet is just not fair. You can dislike it, but do keep in mind it is your individual opinion, not a fact for everyone.

Game is struggling without even being out😂😂😂. All due to game "journalists" like the ones in this channel. Oh it is not like the old DA games, it is too different, only 3 team members at a time, too woke,etc... I love the DA games, still play Inquisition. I am excited for Veilguard, but people are putting too many opinions based on a small sample of the beginning of the game, and from there trying to squeeze "content" to put videos. 😂 give it a rest, at least wait for a demo or wait for Bioware to send a tryout to "content creators".

@@TomaszPiotrowski-ly6wd not only that, but combat was limited even if you wanted to role play as a particular class. The issue wasn’t that it wasn’t fleshed out because all three classes had three specializations, is mostly the boring mashing 1 button then RT to use the other 4 moves that were “special” over and over again. The “tactic version” was also not my favorite way of playing it because you have to constantly pause and redirect all the party once they finish an adversary, they start moving and positioning themselves in front of the enemy even when they’re bow carriers or mages. So it was fine… just not particularly fun. I stayed playing because of the lore.

Everyone negative about it for good reasons they have downgraded the game from Dragon Age and change it to Mass Effect. Now we do not have 8 slots to use to make builds. we have three slots throughout the entire game that need to be change and some ppl are looking at all the characters look ugly which I do not care about that..🥶 and the game has less Gore and darkness in it and all the characters like they're enjoying themselves.... instead of being afraid like they know they're not going to die or whatever😮

Haven’t changed my mind. I’ve played most of Origins and finished inquisition several times. It’s still a maybe buy it 5 years later if it goes to $20 and only if they get good reviews. 1. Graphics still bother me. 2. Writing seems horrible and for an RPG, yeah, that’s a no. 3. Combat looks similar to Andromeda combat and I hated andromeda combat even if others said it was an improvement over cover shooter mechanics from ME 1-3; I didn’t think so. Different but not better by any means imo. Using combo powers over and over and waiting for the powers to time in again was just tedious and boring to me. I loved ME1-3, but this feels like a game that took the worst parts of all DA and ME games and put them all together. 4. There isn’t a single character I would romance, and as Incel as that may sound, romance is supposed to be a huge part of BioWare games, but every one of those companions feel exceedingly annoying and aggressively aggravating. Even Harding lost her charm for me. She was a strait-laced no nonsense character in Inquisition, not a snark that beats enemies with beer mugs cause it’s so “fun.” 5. I’m not an extremist anti-woke or woke person and stay far from that cesspool convo, but, omg, are all the characters ugly as sin mostly because I hate the little character and personality traits they did show off. But fine, what is that Pat of a quanari??? It’s so far removed from what a quanari is supposed to be… they’re supposed to be the Klingons of Dragon age, not jewelry wearing gendermancers. They’re supposed to be Samurai, either kill or seppuku, not leaping rogues who spend five hours every morning adorning jewelry??? I don’t want to make a big deal of it, but it’s immersion breaking. 6. I’m not rooting against the game because a part of me does wish BioWare would get another go at ME but, I’m not about to waste money on a game I’m not going to enjoy either. And having said that, I don’t want to see them retcon and ruin commander Shep either, so, I feel neutral about whether I want the game to succeed or fail. 7. Bellara is also a copy paste character of phoebe(possibly one of the the most dislikable characters BioWare has ever made, up there with Jacob) from Andromeda which bothers the hell out of me, because I have a feeling other characters will be recycled also. Bellara will likely have a branch of fetch quests to go clear some veil breaches and she will probably act all annoyingly nonsensical and eccentric. 🤮. Naaah.

It seems you don't even know how the game will be and yet you already "knows" Bellara is Phoebe and that there will be fetch quests, when all info is explicitly saying otherwise. You can be frustrated and dislike the game. But understand that you disliking it don't make it a bad game per se. Just don't let the hate trend get ahead of the facts we're yet to see.

It seems we have many basic moves, and that those moves can be upgraded and customized. Maybe even comboed. So the way we get to play it might become much more like tailoring our gameplay to our liking with the specific skills that allow for that playstyle, than to play generically with a variety of skills that should've been basic moves. Like Twin Fangs, Shield Wall, Combat Roll and Evade (all from DA:I) for example. Or skills that should've been items, like Knockout Powder and many Tempest skills. I know mage gameplay is tricky, and that is worriying me the most for only 3 skills, but we should really wait and see before seeing it as a major downgrade or becoming disgusted.
