For those of you worried that Ryotaro had stopped in his mischievous attempts to kill me off, let this video offer you some reassurances. To celebrate Ryotaro’s three year anniversary since his Abroad in Japan debut, it seemed fitting to release this video this week! EVERYONE'S understanding of fugu comes from the Simpsons. Literally last week, I was talking to a mate, I mentioned fugu, he didn't know it - I said "the fish Homer ate" and he knew what I was talking about.
I’ll be honest, I live here in Yamaguchi, and the Simpsons episode is still the extent of my fugu knowledge (and the reason I’m still hesitant to try it).
I actually took care of a patient with fugu poisoning when I was a med student at UCLA. He'd gotten a "to go" order of fugu sashimi before leaving Tokyo and consumed it on the flight over to LA. By the time the plane landed, he couldn't move and could barely breathe. We had no clue what was going on--he got a breathing tube put in and couldn't tell us he'd eaten fugu. So we did a huge workup to figure out he why he was paralyzed and not breathing, but everything like CAT scans, MRI scans, labs and spinal taps were normal. Eventually, we got the info about the sashimi consumption and just had to keep him on the ventilator until it wore off. Glad you two had a better experience with it than my patient!

You have the best travel channel on the web! I've been watching your videos for over a year and they are what BBC's nature documentaries could be if they had humor, Japan, and Chris with friends in them. Thank you very much for your hard work.
Maybe the first person ate it, liked the taste, and managed to express his excitement before dying, so the rest of the people were like "that fish's taste is one to die for!"
In the past, many people ate fugu and died, so in 1598, the ruler of Japan at that time specifically prohibited people from eating them. However, people, especially people in Yamaguchi prefecture, didn’t stop eating fugu. In the Meiji era(1868-1912), the central government formally banned fugu cuisines and people in Yamaguchi prefecture had to give up eating fugu. However, one day the first prime minister of the modern Japanese government, Hirobumi Ito, visited Yamaguchi prefecture, and at the inn, he was served fugu for dinner, because the weather was so bad that the inn couldn’t offer any other fish. The inn keeper thought she would be punished for it, but surprisingly, the prime minister really liked it and complimented her on the delectable cuisine. After that, he worked to lift the ban on fugu cuisines and in 1888, the government finally legalized fugu-eating. from fugunohonba.jp/history/
"Here, eat this fish that could kill you slowly and awfully if prepared wrongly!" "Is it so delicious?" "NO! It's rubbery and flavourless! But it does come with a nice sauce. " Sounds legit...

I had fugu in a restaurant in Asakusa on a small shopping alley off the main path of the big temple. Afterwards they used the shabu-shabu water to make rice and egg porridge. 10/10 would eat again.

@@NamiSwan96 I went to Japan and had Fugu with my sister. We saw it live in the tank, then when it was brought to our table, the severed head was still gasping for breath. I lack an adjective with which to describe that experience.

コンコン (Kon Kon) 🦊 Foxes (kitsune) are generally seen as one of the most important animals in Japan. Associated with the God "Inari". You'll pretty much always see white foxes (statues) at Inari shrines. There are a group of related Inari Gods representing fertility, rice, tea, sake, agriculture, industry, patronage and prosperity. White foxes can transform into other things like humans, animals or objects and when they reach 1,000 years old they will have grown nine tales and become a heavenly beasts. The more tales a fox has the more wise and mature it is said they are.
So in order to become naruto, i have to wait for a fox to become 1000 years old and then have a parent or something to seal it inside me and see a friend almost die. Got it!!!
Hmm? This might sound stupid, but what/who is naruto? Is she/he a fox? I think I over heard someone mention something before... I'll search it. *Edit:* _Okay, it seems Naruto is some Japanese fantasy animation which has very little to do folklore or mythology, so no..._

So Ryotaro isn't even trying to hide his intent of killing you indirectly anymore.
tentacle man Ryotaro seems to know a suspicious amount on alien anatomy
Yeah. Somethings very fishy about that. 😂
Chris hoggin the blowfish sashimi at the end lol. Great video, I’ve been a subscriber since the beginning and I’ve enjoyed seeing the quality of your videos improve immensely. Thank you for your hard work!
Next Week: Cost of funerals in Japan 😆
am i the only one who noticed the fugu's heart was still beating even after being separated 💀
I had to scroll too far down to find this comment
yeah its kind of a food culture thing in most sea dependent places to eat the food in the sea as close to live as possible a bit grim by western standards but to obtain the absolute freshest flavor possible this is done here its also done to lobster aswell
It's not grim in the western world the fresher the better
It is a bit grim. You want to kill your meal before eviscerating it.
The human heart will do the same thing :D

ここの亮太郎さんめっちゃ好き😂😂
".......thoroughly wash your manly body......!" - AbroadInJapan Podacast
Thanks senpai for noticing me! #AbroadInJapan
Yeah, but how many people died during the trial-and-error process of figuring out which parts of the fish were edible?
At least 2
If my memory and sources are correct: The major part of a military force preparing to sail across the Sea of Japan and invade the mainland to the North of China. But that was quite some time ago.
Tbf how many people died until we figured out which fruit, veg, etc are edible and which ones are poisonous 😅
@@NA-yq4pe Countless. I wonder if more than the population of the world right now :o
That's a sacrifice I'm willing to take.
The editing in your videos is always so amazing!!
i kinda felt sad for the blowfish, just sitting there looking around waiting to be chopped into slices
You should watch the extended edition of the carrot eating one
@@Shvabicu the one that said ÆÚGH?
@@konrad8541 exactly 😂
Me too 💔
I just noticed the one that's being cut up at 12:10 is still alive. You can see it gasping. Horrible.
The Quality of your Videos is so good now. I watched a lot of you Videos from older ones up to your newst one and i have to say that you constantly work on improving you Videos. As you said in the beginning of the Video, this one has a lot of simmilarity with a top gear episode, i loved it.
Please please make a playlist with your trip in chronological order (they are backwards now in the playlist)
This is such a well produced, well paced, informative and entertaining video. Honesly better quality than most travel shows on mainstream channels. Im so glad I found your channel
Risottoro is the best character in the Abroad in Japan anime
I cannot decide who I adore more - Ryotaro or Chris. Both are amazing, and they are great together! Love their sense of humour respectively!
That Jeremy Clarkson impression was BANG ON! Love it! I’m a new viewer and really enjoying your videos 💖
Make ”Ryotaro in the UK” where you show him around explaining local culture!
Yes, please!!
Great idea
"People would say we're always eating" it's true, but it looks wonderful. Keep up the good work friends.
That "older than Ryotaro" joke never gets old 😂
Rien Leere unlike ryotaro 😂
This is a syndication-quality travel show. Better than most Travel Channel stuff.
"wow a fox!"
"why don't you build a shrine, it lasts longer."
I'm such a hypocrite. One minute: "Ohhhh, that sushi looks sooo fresh and taaasty."
Next minute: "OMG that fugu fish is still alive nooooooo :'( "
Such is the ethical dilemmas and mental mind games a pescetarian who should ethically be a vegan face... damn it, non-humans, why you gotta be so tasty. Why do I have to have empathy for them?
Other than that, great video as usual!
If I'm not mistaken, they are kept alive until they are about to be prepared. At that point they then kill it by puncturing the brain. The movement afterwards is actually muscle spasms after death
@@NamiSwan96 I went to Japan and had Fugu with my sister. We saw it live in the tank, then when it was brought to our table, the severed head was still gasping for breath. I lack an adjective with which to describe that experience.
8:22 Yes because went to Aokigahara Forest is much better place to date I assume
I'm disappointed that he didn't feed the pufferfish a carrot and wait for it to go "EUEGH" before it died
æüê
i'm so hooked from watching previous videos of this channel. then i noticed some were made like 4 years old (or more).. i got so used from the video quality and some comedy which i really enjoyed... but these 2019 videos are really really Good.
You have such a great chemistry with ryotaro, it makes such a great and enjoyable video. It has a charm of genuine friendship and thrist for curiosity which is very laking in yt video nowadays. Kudo to both of you and will be looking forward to your work.
Tonight on abroad in japan
Chris walks up a path
Ryotaro holds a key
And Natsuki smokes a cigarette
That would be impossible since Ryotaro and Natsuki cannot be in the same plane of existence.
Hammond (from Top Gear) loves the Roadster when he drive it! I love Top Gear and The Grand Tour!
*Ryotaro's Tentacle* stretches across the world🤣
"No, love, we're going to the roof tile place!"
Sounds good to me! Who needs romantic restaurants?
I was watching your old videos and the production quality is way better now you have improved a lot
"The tentacles of Ryotaro's empire stretch across the length and breadth of Japan". Wait...Risottaro is secretly an octopus daimyo?
Yes
No, he's an octopus shogun. A daimyo is a regional lord. A shogun is the master of the universe. I think that's right.
*wakes up* ... *checks phone* ... *sees new video* ... hell yea boi
If anyone can enlighten me, how did he get the shot over the bridge, it puzzles me because he’s in the car right, and it’s a drone....? Lol someone explain please
Person101 101 Ryotaro drove and I piloted it while we were moving. It was pretty risky as the drone was over the sea for the entire bridge! Somehow we pulled it off though.
Abroad in Japan Holy hell, now that’s talent
chris has a very long arm
what did the fox say?
"they should build a shrine, here"
and the bells went 'ding dingding..."
i'm sorry
You made me laugh. 😂
What if the fox said that to ylvis as well but he didn't understand the japanese so he just heard a bunch of weird noises instead
"Aeugh"- pufferfish
I loved the presentation of that fugu sashimi. A work of art! Right before you start eating it.
コンコン (Kon Kon) 🦊
Foxes (kitsune) are generally seen as one of the most important animals in Japan.
Got it!!!
Naruto
Hmm? This might sound stupid, but what/who is naruto? Is she/he a fox? I think I over heard someone mention something before... I'll search it. *Edit:* _Okay, it seems Naruto is some Japanese fantasy animation which has very little to do folklore or mythology, so no..._
