  • The Guyana 6 O'clock bee is known for its very loud "buzzing" or "singing" as its commonly referred to. Its popularly heard along the coast of the country at around sunset, which is almost always around 6 o'clock give or take 15-30 minutes every day, and thus its popular name in Guyana "The 6 O'Clock Bee."
The actual name of this insect is the "Cicada" and its from the family of Cicadoidea, and its not a "Bee" either. Its an insect with approximately 3000 types internationally. There are several theories as to the loud sounds it emanates, from a mating call of the males, or a defense mechanism. Whatever the case, most people in Guyana would have heard the "6 O'Clock Bee" but few have ever seen one.

Heard this sound on a visit to Bartica. I was then informed of the interesting name of this insect.
