I have a few questions... can you help me
Glad to see you back....love your content.
I appreciate the up close repair tour and the chance to get more familiar with this iconic car.
For sure! There is a lot going on with it.
Welcome back! Great vid! Worth mentioning: OTC recommends you have your scanner plugged into your lighter before starting your car. Dont plug it in while it's running. They're afraid something may get messed up. And anytime circuits A & B on the ALDL have a scanner ( or paperclip) plugged into them while running, GM vehicles automatically slightly increase timing/ idle speed, which can make diagnosing your vehicle problematic. You want your car running like it normally does, right? Your OTC automatically goes into diagnostic mode. If you read the manual you should be able to select Road-test Mode. This mode will not increase timing/ idle speed. The car will run like it normally would if A & B in the ALDL weren't jumped. Hope this helps.
Great info and makes sense why it ran better when it was plugged in to the ECM. Thanks for the comment and watching.
YESSSSS!!!!!!! THERE HE IS!! REALLY MISSED THESE.
Miss you all too!
Dang. Glad I kept the Subscribed Button clicked!
Me too! Thanks for your support!
Hey Brian glad you're back on RUclips, hopefully we get more content love you're videos brotha keep up the good work.
Thanks for watching and your comment. I have a good half dozen videos lined up for you all. I am committed to keep a cadence moving forward.
Good to see you back with an update on the project!
Thanks for watching and for your comment!
Glad to see this channel active again,
Thank you for watching!
Finally a video, let's get a video update on all those other G bodies.
for sure! So much more to come. I am set up to keep the videos coming now. Had to get my priorities in check first.
Good to see you back, sir! Good to see the old girl getting some love once again. Can't wait til she's fully back.
oh yeah! Love being back. So much more content coming up starting this Thursday!
All the scrap national needed was a good set of hands on it. Nice to see a new video. Excellent work Brian. Your a Beast!!
Appreciate it. Much more to come!
Man these are awesome videos man.
Appreciate you watching! Love your channel!
I'm so glad to see you have an old OTC scan tool, Brian. That thing will really really show you what the hell is going on, especially on these OBD I cars. GM was way ahead of the competition back in the day with the live data stream you're able to get. The BLM - block learn is the equivalent of "long term fuel trim" on OBD2, this is the long term adjustment of the fuel curve to bring the oxygen sensor into switching mode. The INT - integrator, is the short term adjustment. 128 is 0% off of the pre-programmed fuel curve. You should see BLM just a hint more rich than 128 thanks to E10 needing a touch more than straight fuel, and the INT should be around 128, going up and down as its running.
This scan tool certainly puts the ECM into "bypass mode" to test some solenoids and relays, which is why you're seeing the cooling fan turn on. Almost all ECM controlled stuff will do that.
Let me know if you'd like more insight, I used to work on a ton of 80s GM stuff back in the day.
All that aside.... damn I'm happy to see this beast running and that #5 decided to have compression again. Hopefully some day you get to call it yours, or sell it off since you put all that hard work into it.
Whats going on. Really appreciate all of your feedback on here and letting me know what I am looking at here. You can only do so much research on these older systems and need to speak with those who actually used them like yourself. I may have other questions in the future on this car as it has already given me issues since this video LOL.
Thanks for watching and for your very useful information here. Yeah I am very happy 5 came back! What are the odds! Seems to run pretty good now but wait until you see the next couple videos to wrap up this series. Thanks
Glad I found your channel. I've got an 87 GN that's been sitting for 15 years and your videos are going to help. I'm not as mechanically inclined and don't have all the right tools now, but im learning a lot and plan to make it a father son project. Keep up the detail videos so we can bring the ol granny back to life!
Thats awesome! I have more on the revival coming up soon!
Been a while since we seen a update .happy to see
More to come soon!
Nice its been a while since I saw you scrap national video its the GN sounds much better now than before its awesome to see another G body save from the crusher you work long and hard on the buick very soon it will be back on the road 👍👍
Hey thanks for coming back to the channel Daniel. Appreciate your loyalty and comment. More to come!
@@ClassicGBodyGarage thank you sir look forward to more of you G body garage
I needed this video so badly!
Nice man glad to see you back! Looks funny seeing a GN with straight back Monte SS style exhaust. Need those angled exhaust behind rear tires for the GN!
Yeah someone put the MCSS exhaust on it
Very happy for you!! Good persistence!!!
It's about time right?? LOL
FYI- ANYTIME you do a compression test on an engine, it helps to get an actual accurate reading if the throttle is held WIDE OPEN. This allows a full airflow situation to occur without restriction. Fun project BTW, looking forward to seeing more! Thanks for the quality content!!
Yep definitely understand that but that was a quick check and didnt even have the other plugs removed. Just wanted to see if number 5 improved. Thanks for watching and for the info 👍
@@ClassicGBodyGarage Talk about LUCK on #5!! How come I never have that kind of luck LOL. I wasn't trying to aim my comment at your test at all, I just kinda threw it out there. A lot of times guys have no idea to open the throttle when testing. Just was putting it out there as general knowledge and hope I didn't seem like an ass, it certainly was not my intent. I apologize in any case, for the misunderstanding, as I should have been more detailed with my original statement to avoid confusion. Anyhow, great series you have going here- looking forward to more for sure. Have a happy New Year!!
@@btchhopperou812 no apology needed and didnt take your comment as an aim at me. Appreciate you spreading good knowledge for everyone. Thanks again for watching and Happy New Year
I'd bring up the fuel psi to 40. Then leave leave it. Surprised cyl 5 came back up. Hell of a job brain. Congrats. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, I may raise it up a few more lbs.
I can’t wait to see the progress. I want all G-bodies to live forever. Lol
Gotta save them if you can! More to come!
I found your videos yesterday! Right on time too, I bought a 86 cutlass supreme roller last month for 500 bucks, and I bought a 5.7 and 350 turbo transmission to put it in , learning a lot from your videos, I subscribed all-ready, keep them coming
That is awesome! Congrats on the purchase! Yeah I have a ton of videos on these cars. Thanks for subbing.
Glad to see you back in action!
Thanks!
good to have to back. love the g body cars.
Great to be back with you all as well!
nice to see you again. still not selling it right. have a Happy New Year to you and your family. I have to change some gaskets on the Oldsmobile is been sitting for a while.
Great to see you too! Thanks for watching and Happy New Year to you and your family as well!
Good job Brian !!
Thanks!
Working on mine now! Thank you for videos.
Glad to see you back on this channel. Any way you can post a link to the duplacolor videos you did on the Camino?
Thanks man. Look up DUPLICOLORTV for the videos I do for work.
Good to see u back
You too!
Yesss sir 💯💯💯💯💯
That type of scan tool is the first one I was ever exposed too. Which was top of the line in the early 90s.
With that said, I am not sure you actually need a scan tool to diagnose or fix your drivability problem. (Although it can assist in helping.) Because normally you can do things like change out the fuel filter, and do a tune up. Which will go a long ways in addressing the driveability issue.
Then things like having the injectors cleaned. Making sure the lines are not kinked or plugged up. (Especially inspecting the rubber fuel hose that connects the fuel pump to the pickup tube in the tank.)
As for the number five cylinder, there could have been some loose carbon on the valve(s) or the rings and cylinder could have been washed down with fuel, causing the compression to be low in that cylinder. Which pumping some oil into the cylinder from a oil pump can would go a long ways to addressing the low compression number. Also washing out the air intake with some type of cleaning spray has always helped remove any carbon stuck in the fuel system. (Needless to say, the smallest problem is normally the one that causes the biggest issue.)
Thanks for watching and all of your feedback details, very informative. Please check out the first 4 videos in the series as I replaced the tank, lines hard and rubber, pump, sending unit and filter. Worked my way up front with the injection then. I also did a dry and wet compression test and thankfully number 5 came back over time. The scanner came in handy although not terribly complex, it did help me monitor readings that I needed to pinpoint the lean issue also make sure the temps were in check. Thanks again.
@@ClassicGBodyGarage Well I had already watch those other videos. So I know what you have already done.
Needless to say, I have already worked on more than one of these Grand Nationals. In my time as a professional automotive technician. Which we faced the same set of problems back when this type of vehicle was not as old.
So I was providing ways of addressing these problems. From the aspect of not having access to a scan tool. Since a scan tool is only going to give a person an indication. Of what possibly could be going on, and not what could actually be the problem. (Because these indications could still be due to a mechanical problem and not a sensor malfunction. It could also be simply a bad ground or it could indicate something like carbon blockage somewhere in the intake or heads. Or even a simple vaccuum leak. Which are all just some of the things I have found to be problems when I was diagnosing similar issues with this same model car.)
Which even know a scan tool can be helpful in assisting in indicting what is possibly wrong. One can also with a good volt ohm meter, a test light, fuel pressure gauge and compression gauge. Still be able to diagnose a drivability problem with their own automobile.
Of course, I have pulled the fuel tank to clean out bad fuel before, and blown out the fuel lines. So much of what you have done, I have already been down this road before. So I understand it is not exactly going to be the same issue every time.
Stopping is important after Garrett spools! Looks like you removed problematic Powermaster and well on your way with vacuum brake conversation. Good luck, can't wait to see your GN back on the road👍
Thank you! Yeah the brakes video is up next!
Awesome! Was just checking out your Facebook stuff over the holidays and was wondering when the next video was coming. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year! Thanks for watching.
Good work
Thanks
Awesome job always love your content and keeping your g-bodies rollen.
Thank you! Have to keep them roll'in
I have the same injectors and chip old owner took the 42 injectors out and put stock back I'm I'm put the 42s back in car is running lean keep the videos coming
Yeah for sure put them back in! Should run better then.
I love this story
Its a crazy one.
My 1979 3.8 runs fabulous on 92 octane clear gas. It will never have to burn that horrible ethanol gas.
Thanks for the content!
Thanks for watching!!
It is nice to see you are back with a new video and saving this GN. You also have it sounding really good and I can’t wait for you to get the brakes working well, so you can get this baby out for a test drive. Also how is your 80 Cutlass running? I have one also.
Yeah for sure! Much more to come on this car and it wont be long. All content has been filmed! Havent driven my 80 on the road in a few years. Just fire it up to move it. Needs some TLC
Holy shit long time no see!!!!
Your hair is still lookin good haha
Cheers!
Happy I have it still! LOL
Find a scanmaster to Help for tuning,it Help a lot
So I've heard while doing all this research to get to this point. Seema to be running pretty good now.
Yeah! Run good !!93 octane stock boost 12-13lb it Will live for à long time whit no knock..My 1986 $$$ ask me How I know..I learn$$$
Another question, did you change the fuel filter? You don’t mention it.
Yeah I did that in an earlier video.
Awesome Brian can't wait for more! Do you have any G body garage merch?
I have a website launching soon for merch and many other things!
Great car I love it good job. What’s up with that blue 79 Malibu
Thanks and the blue Malibu is another project I need to get to.
Brian is that an aftermarket exhaust on the GN. Mine exit out the sides not the rear. I bought mine new so I know mine are original. Great video thanks for sharing. Bill
yeah someone put different exhaust on it.
I enjoy your videos but why doesn’t your car have the optional side body moldings and all your GN emblems are mounted way to high in wrong location but car shown in salvage yard has moldings and all GN emblems are in proper factory locations?
Please check ou the first video of the series. I go through everything
Welcome back!would you by any chance have an 80 cutlass rear bumper for sale?
Thanks. I don't have one at this time.
Hey dude, what kind of scan tool is that?
OTC Enhanced Monitor 4000 E Diagnostic Code Scanner System
You still have the white Malibu that came from Arizona?
Yes
I hope you replaced the fuel filter first before replacing the injectors.
Yeah I did that along with tank, sending unit, pump a d lines. Worked my way forward from the rear. Check out the play list on this build and you will see how things have progressed.
FOCUS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
would that scanner work on a 1987 Iroc-Z Camaro?
yes
Jesus, I have ZERO CLUE about any of that talk!! I just drive my 87 GN. Absolutely love my car which I have owned the last 19 years. Thinking of selling it this spring and get a Hell Kitty 》》 IDK
keep your going you'll want it back after you sell it.. I say buy a rust free gbody and ls swap with a lsa supercharger you can build one for around 30k vs the 850+ insurance a month owning a hellcat
@@flagcityparts thanks 4 the feedback. Again know zero about cars, as I am in the medical profession. Car owes me nothing, as its paid for. Insurance would be 167 per month up here in Ontario Canada. Already priced it. Just like the idea of turning the key, letting her rip, and not worry about idle, timing, scan master tools, and that quirky V turbocharged engine. Something to think about, I guess. But yes, everyone says to hang onto it. Christ, it only has 63 thousand KMS on it which is roughly 38 thousand miles?? I know I would get top dollar 4 it!! Definitely think about what you said🙂
Hey classic gbodygarage my 87 supreme trunk wont close..i been away from it for years worked fine then..nothing looks wrong with any thing.irritatingly weird
People are that strange to scrap a car like that one.
Hard to believe.
😂 I was correct last year. You will be doing one video a year...🤣
And I will stay on track with another video in 2022! But waaaaay earlier. Stay tuned and appreciate you watching even if its yearly 😁
@@ClassicGBodyGarage 😏😂 Well it is your channel, I just watch when something is posted...😁
first
Thanks for watching and your support!
@@ClassicGBodyGarage still waiting on that 84 chevy truck to get done I was watching videos on 8 years ago i come for the truck videos but also owned 3 80s olds cutlass so i sayed for videos on how to fixed them LOL
@@jonsworld5307 yeah I hope to get some work done on my 84 Silverado too this coming year.
Hey do you still have any Oldsmobiles
Yea many

@@ClassicGBodyGarage Thanks for getting back to me, I've never been on the Instagram. Guess I'm just old school maybe you could put some on the youtube sometime.
@@baja9326 I will be posting updates about cars I will be working on to sell as well on RUclips. BTW Instagram is a great way to network with the car community. Its not just for kids that do stupid stuff.
You’re fuel pressure is ten pounds too low. That’s why you’re lean. 43-44 psi at idle.
It's up to 43 with vacuum line off which is on the money now 👍
You abandoned us
No more my friends
190 degrees is bad. You need a 160 degree thermostat. Fans should come on at 180. You're running it too hot.
The fans were coming on at factory spec and now they come on earlier with the new chip in the ECM. I don't know what stat is in it but yes when I replace it, it will be with a 160.
3800 are knows for upper and lower intake gasket issues even in today's world and to be all honest fair that dirty and oiley as all hell witch that would cause a Lead issue
The wet intake is from the gas when I pulled the fuel rail.
It's an easy fix....just sell me the car....
LOL but I fixed it!
No shit. LOL
Focus is horrible over the entire video
Not the entire video but there are parts of it where my camera likes to do it's own thing. Appreciate your time watching.
@@ClassicGBodyGarage other than that it's a good video, my only suggestion would have been to clean up the top of the intake prior to pulling the fuel system. Too much opportunity for trash to get in
@@johnhull6363 I blew the loose stuff off with the compressor, the wetness you see if the fuel from the rail. I made sure as little as possible went in the injector ports but no way to prevent nothing to enter. Thanks again for the feedback. Happy New Year!
