I have the bosch daredevil spade bit set and comes with the same extension like the Diablo one. If you look inside you will find out the Diablo uses three ball bearings for more secure locking of the bit, and eliminates the wobble.
Lol I watched this video this morning and thought "I don't think I need one of these". Ffwd this afternoon I up and decide to change my air filter on my Honda Odyssey. Turns out this is exactly what I needed for the 8" channel to get behind the air filter housing. I managed to maguyver a few pieces together to make the length. But now I'm picking one of these up next time I'm at the hardware store!
My favorite ratcheting screwdriver is now the Vessel ball grip. It has a stubby integrated into the handle that's easy to remove and use separately. Those Diablo extensions look exactly like the ones Malco has.
I have a few of the bosch/diablo (same holder, just different color collar) holders in both 6" and 12" and they're for sure my favorites. I use the 6" the most, but the 12" has come in handy more than once.
when you pull out the snap-on shank its a 1/4" drive. You can than use a 1/4" drive extension backwards and place the shank into the extensions drive and the 1/4" head of the extension into the handle. this way you can go as long as you need it.
I've got the 12 in Milwaukee and I've lost a handful of spade bits pulling the bit back out of the hole and the collar catching the edge on the way out. Much prefer the Diablo.
I find the opposite happening with the DeWalt because you push in to screw in and it catches something and ejects the bit. Also when changing beds pulling out and a bit coming out so you can either take it out or popping out makes much more sense then pulling back and pulling out.
Theres another dewalt 12" one that has a locking bit holder but it's super slim. Doesn't bulge out at the bit end like those 3 do. It's almost or just as slim as a regular magnetic bit holder that doesn't lock,,, but this dewalt one does in fact lock. I have the 3" version as well and its EASILY my all time fav bit holder. Cuz it's so slim it fits in so many places other bigger bit holders wont.
I agree 100% that Doc should check the DeWalt DWA12HLDFT out. Another great thing about the slim inline profile is that if you’re going through a hole the mechanism can’t get caught up (coming or going) and release your bit.
nice to see the diablo I bought is solid.. need to drill out an old rusted seat post in a schwinn and a set of ebay bit extenders kept rounding loose for a step drill bit my malco connext1 handle should do well with the diablo for long screw driving
I'm a fan of a different Dewalt extension, the DWA12HLDFT. They're super skinny where the bit goes, and there is almost zero play. You should check it out if you haven't already.
Milwaukee's one-handed insertion + one-handed extraction = similar to the Wera Rapidaptor collar. That's the winner for me. There are very few locking collars similar to the Wera in terms of extracting the bit by pushing the ring outward (rather than pulling it down), in the same direction your fingers go to catch the bit. As demonstrated by Doc at 4:58.
Whenever I can I use the $14.50 Milwaukee 12 in. x 3/8 in. Bit Extension for Selfeed Bits and Hole Saws. It doesn't have the locking section on the end so I can get it in PC cases a lot easier. The magnet is strong too. I modded one for the Hazet driver and another for that great Wiha you recommended.
It would be nice if there were more options on these in the form of the snapon one, but with the 1/4 hex shank. I usually find myself needing an extension that's slim without the locking collar.
Ares makes great extensions for the money. They have a 2 footer i've been using for a few years for everything from simple impact driving to drill brushes (clean the shower in seconds!). It doesn't "auto lock" the bit so if that's a dealbreaker, look elsewhere, but it does function and has been through the ringer with me. It has a 2 foot long sleeve on the extension (lol) and it feels gimmicky/cheap but just keeps on rocking.
I haven't had a issue with it, but I've heard people don't like the bit holders that pull toward the bit to release it because if they drill a long hole then fish the extention back out, the bit holder will hit the walls of what you just drilled and pop the bit off
I just got a ~10" 10mm impact socket. It looks a lot like one of those things they sometimes use at gas stations for their bathroom keys. So long that you can't accidentally walk off with it. We'll see how long this 10mm socket survives...
The Malco Connext handles feel more stable when used with those extensions than the Wera handles, but sadly they can't handle insert bits without an extension... The Diablo extensions (and the Wera rapidaptor) work great with Japanese style bits.
That dewalt DWA 12 HLD FT is stiff as a board 12in extension. It's my pick over thoes unless it's for a spade bit. The only reason I keep diablo bosh milwaukee is for heavy spinning drill bits. The dewalt is about perfect.
My Dewalt locking bit holder is bigger than the Diablo.. they have a bunch of different types..You just happen to have those options..personally, I think long bits are a better option. Especially for recessed holes. You'll never get any of those including the SnapOn in some of the hokes I've had to get in...long bits of every type are a much better option ☝️

Dewalt DWA12HLDFT it’s a slimline locking bit holder. Helps me drill smaller holes in certain aluminum buildouts I need to make with work.

I believe I'll get the Diablo, I run into a lot of situations where I can't get my hand that close. Thanks Doc

Excellent point!
Ah yes, there is that. Didn't think about this potential drawback for a 'push collar' 🤔
I find the opposite happening with the DeWalt because you push in to screw in and it catches something and ejects the bit.

Crazy you posted these. I have a 12" milwaukee Shockwave and I've been thinking about getting a locking 12" extension. Roll the film
I have the wera 393 and the really thin locking head is soooo nice. Highly recommend. It locks in REALLY tight too.

I agree. These slim dewalt bit holders are the best I've found, with almost zero bit wobble too

Are any of the holders magnetic? I find on longer holder being magnetic is a big help .

Love my Diablo 6in bit holder.
I had to drill 1000 inserts into sheet metal deck the Diablo didn’t make it through(broke). I still have the irwin
Off topic,Doc have you seen the Gearwrench 82220 indexing pry bar?
Half sizes, in a dip coating.
Should be standard, with a small one that locks from a ratchet.
Great info
Diablo looks very similar to an 10+ year old Irwin I have that sadly can't take the 1in insert bits directly

I’m not sure if Bosch or diablo how you call it, can hold jis bits, my 120mm milwaukee can hold but can’t lock japanese bit, dewalt dunno

Dewalt DWA12HLDFT is awesome.
Doc, one question. Didn't you allow RUclips to dub your voice with AI?
Check out torque test channel they did a video on these and a few others and the Dewalt came out on top I was surprised
The Diablo is designed for spade bits that's why it's so "overbuilt" compared to the others
doesn’t a long shaft on a stubby screwdriver defeat the purpose
My dewalt literally felt apart into pieces. 😢
It figures that Doc’s favorite way to use a screwdriver is arguably the worst way to use it lol
