"If there's any bone in your body he's gonna brake it. Give the man a little respect". One of the best lines in this movie. Along with Dixon saying "He's got bricks in his gloves".
@Alexi Barona The vast majority of those losses came before Rocky received any training from Mickey. He was very rough around the edges, basically untrained and with most of his potential untapped. A major theme in Rocky I (initially a standalone film) is that he could've been something if people around him had given him a real shot, if the opportunities had been available to him. The fight against Apollo, although a huge long shot, is his last chance to prove his worth as an aging fighter with battle scars.
So long as I live, I'll never forget the theater audience reaction when Rocky was able to hurt Mason. There were people literally clapping and cheering thunderously. There were some who were even crying, I know we're in the superhero craze era. This film was one of the most inspirational parts of my early 20's. Everytime this movie comes on, it takes me back to that time. It isn't over till it's over.
This is so true. I got choked up during Creed when Rocky said he was diagnosed with cancer. It's like my childhood hero was dying in front of me. Crazy how movies suck us in like that
In my opinion, some of the most pivotal moments in Rocky 1 and 2 were lines from the late Tony Burton. Think on it - "He's all wrong for us, babe." "Hey Champ, I think you need to take a look at this guy you're fighting. Looks like he means business." "DON'T PUNCH WITH HIM, DAMMIT!"
Great meta line (the idea of "Rocky 6" was just cringe SNL sketch in 2005,) also when the announcer says "Welcome to Rockyland" (like his career is just famous for this kind of shit and we're right back there.)
"Give the man a little bit of respect" is another one. Dixon's coach knows what he's talking about. He was there to watch Rocky's rise and reign as champ.
As someone who follows boxing IRL, I really appreciate the presentation here: the camera angles, the commentary, the HBO branding, Michael Buffer. The entire thing is presented just like a proper modern-day boxing match, and seeing Rocky in it makes it feel very cool and uncanny.
Colin Preston he said he would take it easy on Rocky unless Rocky went hard. Rocky went somewhat hard so mason went hard and started beating him badly. However mason hurt his hand that’s why Rocky had somewhat of a chance.
It wasn't a real fight dipshit Balboa was just insane in this movie,he sees him with a broken arm and runs to him to punch him more, very out of character that's something drago would do.Old people can be crazy
at 3:45 when Dixon said "Mans got bricks in his gloves" I couldn't help but think of before when Rocky was with his trainer Tony Burton cracked his neck twice and said "YEAH!!" 😂😂
"Yeah well he came to battle okay? Listen to me: if there is any bone in your body he can break he's gonna do it. Give the man a little respect" Line gets me every time. It's a veteran trainer who knows both his own fighter and his opponent and is the only one in Dixon's corner with the utmost respect for Rocky because he's probably actually seen him in his prime and knows what he is devastatingly capable of.
And honestly look at Rocky's career stats, 81 fights with 54 KO's going into this one. The Rocky movies were a small sample size and focused on some of those losses and decisions, but most of the time when Rocky fought he won and won big especially after Creed started training him. The ones he lost, even when he was overmatched against Lang and Apollo he never backed down or just gave in. His trainer was fully aware that if Dixon walked into this fight expecting Rocky to cooperate he was going to get knocked out. Rocky's whole strategy is taking hits to get inside the other guy's reach, finding their weak point, and caving it in.
Apollo would of knocked down Dixon over a million times. Clubber would of seriously bruised Dixon really bad. Drago would of killed Dixon. And Tommy... He'd probably beat him too.

You realize how iconic the Rocky series is when watching this in the theatre and the audience is losing their shit at 5:49 in standing ovation for Rocky like its a real boxing match lol.
There's two things I think are absolutely brilliant about this fight in terms of story. 1) Mason breaking his hand on Rocky's hip. Not only was it a great equalizer in the fight, but it also shows that Mason is getting older and fighting the same battle Rocky is, just at a different point in his life. 2) The end of the fight -- the final decision -- is exactly the same as the original Rocky movie -- a controversial split decision in a fight that many felt Rocky won. Absolute genius.
Nice piece of writing to have Dixon break his hand. It provides a feasible explanation for Rocky even having a chance, and also gives Dixon a great conclusion to his arc, since he had struggled with the perception that he took easy fights.
I like how after the first round Mason trainer told it like it was. "This man came to fight, if he can break any bone in your body he is gonna do it, give the man some respect." Telling mason to not take him lightly and give the man his due.
Best fight presentation in the entire series. The HBO hud, the camera angles... everything about this film is the most accurate I've ever seen depicting a televised boxing broadcast ever.
The trunks he wore in Rocky 4 are Apollo Creed's colors. He wore them in the second fight in Rocky 3 against Clubber Lang as a thank you to Apollo for training him and again in Rocky 4 in remembrance of Apollo after his death to Drago (and of course because it was the mid 80's and the whole cold war USA vs Russia thing).

I love the subplot they have with Mason. It's something we always ask about modern fighters, do they have the grit or skill the old greats did? He had no real challenge up until this point and needed the acid test of going up against a true legend. Whether Rocky is way past his prime or not, Mason needed to show that he can rise to the challenge when someone stands in front of him and doesn't go down and even throws back. Who better to give the test than Rocky?

If only Hollywood would have let Stallone make a rocky movie in the mid to late 90’s.they still could of used the foreman old man theme as Stallone was in his late 40’s.
Agreed. It would have been more credible if it was done even 7-8 years earlier. In that case, I would have liked to have seen Rocky win by KO in a manner similar to Foreman.
Balboa 9 8 10 10 9 10 9 9 10 9 93 Dixon 10 10 9 9 10 9 10 10 9 10 96 I got 96-93, Dixon. Round 3 through 9 were in montage and it looks like no knock downs occurred. I gave Rocky rounds 3, 4, 6 and 9. And Dixon rounds 1, 2, 5, 7, 8, and 10.
In terms of this fight, it was not only just about Rocky having one more in him, but finally being the opponent where Dixon could prove he was a worthy champion. It definitely reflected how weak the boxing scene is since the early 2000s.
Interesting to think that Sylvestor Stallone probably had to really take those face/head shots for this too, as this was done at a real boxing match, so it was a real boxing crowd.
He was knocked down. They did more actual punching than in any of the fights to make it look more authentic. Sly and Antonio both acknowledged that Sly got dropped legitimately a couple times.
Also, there aren't words to describe how ridiculous a Mason vs. Drago fight would be. Apollo creed is a hundred times the fighter Mason is and Drago killed him in the ring with ease. Mason would probably have died the second Drago gave him that scary glare of his.
Dang right!! Mason actually was a paper champion!!! when i saw those scenes in the film where those experts favour Mason for the win I was like "C'mon man Rocky would've KILLED him inside of 2 rounds in his prime"
In real life Dolph nearly killed Stallone with one punch. If it wasn't for the movie plot, Drago would have wiped out pretty much anyone in the Rocky universe lol.
I always feel goosebump between 7:40 to 7:47. The perfect alchemy between Duke and Rocky. "You won that round, take him down !" And then Rocky's face full of anger and determination 😮
At 2:01 you can hear genuine excitement in Max's voice. He's not just playing a role there, every boxing enthusiast has a special place for the Rocky films in their heart regardless of how unrealistic the portrayal of the sport is so he's genuinely pumped up to get to watch Stallone playing Rocky in the ring right in front of him against Antonio Tarver, an actual professional boxer. And this was one of the most realistic fights in the series because Stallone and Tarver agreed to engage in legit sparring, they're actually beating the hell out of each other at times. I bet Jim and Larry were just as excited as Max, they're just not quite as animated. Great movie, on par with the first one IMO. EDIT: Noticed at 7:14 Robert's "Go after him!" line is delivered with the same tone as his younger self's line in Rocky V when Rocky's about to KO Tommy. I wonder if it's an intentional homage considering Stallone reportedly doesn't like to acknowledge Rocky V.
While the opponent always lands more hits on Rocky, yet they easily overlook one crucial point. Rocky's incredible punching power. He is also aknowledged to have the most devastating body attacks, which caused internal bleed on Apollo Creed and Ivan Drago's ribs to break. Even if Rocky is an old man passed his prime.. he is still a force to be reckoned with. That's Rocky for you :) So yes... here I am chanting! ROCKY!!! ROCKY!! ROCKY!!!
I grew up watching the 'old Rocky movies' on TV and recording them in VHS to watch them again and again and again. I had the same feeling as the guy here that says "A Rocky Balboa fight, I can't believe it" when I was at the theatre watching the movie. "I'm watching a Rocky fight at the cinema!". Pure goosebumps. Apart from that, I skipped classes the day the movie was released in Spanish cinemas so I could watch the first five Rocky during the day and then went to the movies at night session. For sure the first person in Europe that watch the six Rocky movies one after another on the same day. Don't know if there were more freaks like me in the US (probably)
You can have the skill the power the speed. The one thing that can beat all that is something that walks through it all with a smile. Unstoppable Will!
You're right. At first Rocky was completely based on true event- fight of Ali as champion versus some unknown fighter, who stayed up on his legs until the end. It was inspiration for Stallone. He made Apollo be cocky, charismatic, intelligent and all other stuff like Ali. Carl Weathers was chosen for the role of Apollo because he naturaly was that type of guy - arrogant, intelligent, cocky and charismatic. Great project.
For me is the best fight in the Rocky franchise: perfectly filmed and really catching. When they talked about Rocky Balboa everyone thought it would have been corny but was a really good movie, probably the better one after Rocky.

This is exactly what I noticed. Dixon felt the punches by mentioning that. That's why Duke said, everytime you hit him, you gotta make a dent.
Mack knew, he was very much like Duke, he kept Mason as humble and focused as possible just like Tony did with Apollo.
"Welcome to Rockyland"
Yesh love that line. Martin knew Rocky posed a threat.

I love how they got a real boxer to fight in this movie to play Rocky Balboa and also cool to see actor Antonio Tarver in here also.
Dixon may have won but a 60 year old Rocky showed him up
I love the message of this movie, you don’t give up you still have a chance. We should all have a little Rocky in us.
Interesting to think that Sylvestor Stallone probably had to really take those face/head shots for this too, as this was done at a real boxing match, so it was a real boxing crowd.
I know, right? It's like when they film parts of movies at military testing grounds - they have to *actually* nuke Russia
He was knocked down. They did more actual punching than in any of the fights to make it look more authentic. Sly and Antonio both acknowledged that Sly got dropped legitimately a couple times.
@@manuginobilisbaldspot424 i hope he didn't go to the hospital like with Dolph
@@stysonss what is nou
@@stysonss It is easier to simulate a nuke blast than to simulate someone getting punched in a choreographed boxing match.
If every boxing match looked like a Rocky fight, I’d never miss one
That part when Dixon went down, that should have been the end of the fight at the last round
"Man has bricks in his gloves"
lol! That line always gets me.
"You won that round, take him down !"
And then Rocky's face full of anger and determination 😮
5:50 must have brought memories back for Duke, reminding him of the way Rocky went after Clubber and Drago.
yup exactly
That old man strength is nothing to play it.
"Cover up ! Cover up !"
Dude have you even watched a Rocky match before ? Haha
Just realized Max Kellerman was commentating over the intercom LMAO
5:47 Go after him!
I love Duke's voice.
We need this for closure for the rocky character.
Rocky had a rare asset. The indomitable will to win!
6:44 , Welcome to Rockyland!
Simply epic!
You can have the skill the power the speed. The one thing that can beat all that is something that walks through it all with a smile. Unstoppable Will!
2:08 Dude, George Foreman was in the Rocky universe? Was Ali in the Rocky universe?
Where was Apollo vs Ali?
Frazier was too, he appears before the Apollo-Rocky fight in the original movie. Tyson in this movie of course.
Apollo was Ali.
@@Samuelfish2k exactly
That would be the best fight Apollo creed vs Muhammad ali why couldnt that happen
This was such a fantastic "passing of the torch" concept. A perfect ending to an amazing franchise/ story.
For a second I was thinking "Who was the draw fight?"
Duh, Creed v. Balboa 1.
It only won an Academy Award there, Eric.
Great fighting scene, what a war well done. Loving always Rocky and Stallone movies.
Imagine getting knocked by a 60 year old in your prime
foreman vs moore lol basically
To be fair Rocky is pretty much the best boxer ever and did all that without a prime
Yeah lol
For me is the best fight in the Rocky franchise: perfectly filmed and really catching. When they talked about Rocky Balboa everyone thought it would have been corny but was a really good movie, probably the better one after Rocky.
damn, this was a great movie
"Welcome to Rockyland"
You Damn Right
53 people don't have the eye of the tiger.
Shooting this like an actual TV boxing match was a genius move imho
I rented this movie and watched
And I thought I was goin crazy but I lauged so hard again I almost pissed in my pants anybody notice the dude falling in the ring at 6:40
LOL was that supposed to happen or did they just go along with it LMAO!
Never gets old …Fighters underestimating Rocky…it is always their first mistake…Go Rocky Go ❤
This movie was better than Rocky 5.
Joshua g anything is better than Rocky 5
Pathetic comment lol
Just wanting attention lol.
You kids don't know how to judge anything properly lol.
Nor even think for yourself lol.
You kids should blame and hate drago for the result of Rocky 5 lol
That was one of Rocky's strategies, Keep pounding away at the body until the opponent couldnt breath anymore
He's in better shape than most men half his age. Lol
Been watching Rocky my whole life. What a ride
